Evening Prayers: For Every Day of the Year

Rate this book
"Blumhardt's conviction that God is present and powerful and able to still work his will in the world today breathes through every prayer. These are as striking, moving, and provocative now as they surely were when Blumhardt prayed them." John E. Phelan, Jr., The Covenant Companion

End each day of the year peacefully by turning to God with a prayer and a Bible passage. We want to turn to God at the end of each day, but often don't find the words to express our deepest feelings and longing. This collection of prayers is one of the few daily devotionals especially intended for use in the evening.

Blumhardt's words bespeak a certainty in God's nearness. The peace that flows from them comes from an unshakeable conviction that God's kingdom is indeed on the way. In stormy and challenging times like our own, most of us need this reassurance frequently, if not daily.

Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt (1842–1919) was born in Möttlingen, Germany, at the very time his father, Johann Christoph Blumhardt, was engaged in the amazing events recounted in Plough’s book The Awakening. The younger Blumhardt was raised in an atmosphere of the reality of the presence of God, where faith was lived out practically and miracles came naturally. As his father had done before him, he began training for the ministry, studying theology at Tübingen. However, he became disillusioned with theology and decided, in 1869, to return home to Bad Boll to support his father in his healing ministry. In 1880 the elder Blumhardt died, and the son carried on his father’s work.

Like his father, Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt soon became renowned as an evangelist and faith healer. But after a successful “crusade” in Berlin in 1888, he drastically cut back both activities, saying, “I do not want to suggest that it is of little importance for God to heal the sick; actually, it is now happening more and more often, although very much in quiet. However, things should not be promoted as though God’s kingdom consists in the healing of sick people. To be cleansed is more important than to be healed. It is more important to have a heart for God’s cause.”

Blumhardt’s interest gradually took “a turn to the world,” focusing upon the great socioeconomic issues of his day. He chose to cast his lot with Democratic Socialism, the much-maligned workers’ movement. Although it brought on the wrath of both civil and ecclesiastical establishments, he addressed protest rallies, ran for office, and was elected to a six-year term in the Württemberg legislature. Blumhardt began as an energetic legislator but soon became disillusioned with party politics and declined to stand for a second term of office, resuming his pastorate at Bad Boll until his death in 1919.

Blumhardt believed one of the greatest dangers to human progress was “Christianity” – Sunday religion that separated material existence from the spiritual and that erected rituals and practices of self-seeking, self-satisfying, otherworldly piousness instead of practical works and righteous living. His witness profoundly influenced theological giants like Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Emil Brunner, Oscar Cullman, and Karl Barth, yet is still waiting to be discovered in much of the English-speaking world. To that end, Plough has published several collections of Blumhardt’s writings, including Everyone Belongs to God, Action in Waiting, and Evening Prayers.

I enjoyed reading these prayers each night. It includes a Bible verse to reflect upon. They were amazingly relevant and appropriate considering the book was written during WWII

About the Author:

Pastor, politician, and author, Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt (1842–1919) with his unconventional ideas about the kingdom of God, profoundly influenced a whole generation of European seekers. Among the luminaries he influenced were Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Emil Brunner, Oscar Cullman, and Karl Barth. Yet his vision and witness are still waiting to be discovered by most Americans, few of whom have had access to his works. He carried forward the work of his father, Johann Christoph Blumhardt (1805–1880), who is regarded by many as the key figure of German pietism.

My Review:

Each day of the year is a day that we need our Father. Many times we run the risk of not knowing what to say to Him in way of prayer. But every day we need to talk with Him, even if we aren't asking for anything. A prayer of worship or thankfulness can go a long way towards intimacy with Him.The author of Evening Prayers: For Every Day of the Year, was a man that inspired many after him including but not limited to Bonhoeffer, Brunner, and many others.

He still inspires many even after his death. His words are true and heartfelt and still apply today. One of my favorite prayers in the book was the one listed on March 24th. Based on Habakkuk 2:3, praying for God's protection as we wait.

Each prayer has a scripture reference and there are enough prayers to last 365 days. You can use these as prayers as they were intended or you can use them along with Bible study. I loved the collection of prayers and would like to suggest it as a gift. It is a great collection of prayers perfect for any day of the year. Originally intended only for some of Blumhardt’s close friends, this book of prayers was collected after his death in 1919. Taken from evening devotions that Blumhardt held at Bad Boll, in Germany, these prayers were said without any thought of publication.

Evening Prayers For Every Day of the Year, by Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt, has been on shelves for a century! How did I not know about this book before now?

What a blessing—that I came upon it when I did.

These evening prayers, each paired with a Bible reading, have blessed me beyond measure this Christmas season, as I spent my evenings in communion with the Lord.

Each page represents a day of the year, and is comprised of the date, a Bible passage (usually taken from the New International Version) and an evening prayer. Though the pages can be read quickly, it sparks thoughts and encourages the reader to spend time in prayer and meditation.

What a difference a few moments of prayer makes as we close each day!

The only illustrations in this hardback book, other than the lovely, scenic slipcover, are each month’s divider pages—drawings of the same dormer window with slight differences in the weather or seasons. The variations range from a curtain flowing from an open window in the springtime, to a flower box, snow on the roof, or a Christmas wreath.

Charming additions, in my opinion.

I received Evening Prayers For Every Day of the Year in December, so I haven’t read it in its entirety, but today is the first day of a new year, and I plan to keep it as a companion throughout 2015.

Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt lived from 1842-1919. He influenced many lay people and religious leaders during his time. We, in America, are not as acquainted with his name and his inspiring writings. Blumhardt is known for his short prayers which are full of detail and always offer words of thanks. It's great to know that The Lord hears short prayers as well as lengthy prayers. At the beginning of each prayer is a scripture. There are also black and white sketches before each month in the year. There is a lighted room at the top of a house. Each black and white sketch gives an idea of the season. For example, for January there is snow. For April, there is a light breeze blowing the curtains. In this sketch the moon seems to shine although there is not any color. In November, there are leaves falling. These tiny black and white sketches help to center the mind on God and His creation.

Also, in the beginning there is a fine biography about Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt. The Evening prayers I have read were very moving and seemed to fit the place where I am in my life at the moment. The Evening prayers are also meant to bring us back to our inner child, the innocence in each of us that can lie dormant. "If we want to become healthy and strong, we have to start from the beginning and become like children. This is where Blumhardt can be of great service to people everywhere." This devotional is definitely a keeper to add with other devotionals on your shelf.jesus.org.uk/christian-classics... Thank you to Plough Publishing House.

Welcome to my review of Evening Prayers: For Every Day of the Year. These prayers were written by Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt who lived from 1842-1919. These are lovely prayers that are meant to be read in the evening .

I loved these prayers they are so pretty and would be a great gift for someone who may not be able to find the words to pray.

Sometimes we are so emotional or tired that we cant find words to say an evening prayer. This book makes it so easy and I like to read the prayer each night as a devotional. What I do is read one of the prayers and than go on with my regular prayers its a very nice finish to my day.

I think this book would make for a lovely gift this holiday season for anyone who is suffering and just does not have the words to pray, its also good for any christian who would like a very special devotional to have for every day of the year.

The reason I think it makes for a fantastic devotional is because before each prayer there is a scripture reading so you are getting a really complete worship aid in this book.

I am so happy I got to review it its going to be with me for years and is hard bound and sturdy. The prayers are lovely and so heartfelt I hope you get yourself a copy you will cherish it forever.

irst of all I would like to say that the cover of this book fits perfectly, the peaceful tranquility I feel when I look at the cover is the same feeling I get whenever I open the book to read it. The book is broken down into 365 evening readings with each page consisting of a scripture verse and then a prayer. There is plenty of space at the bottom of each page to jot down notes or feelings that you may want to remind yourself of. There are also several blank pages at the end of the book that I am using for notes and reminders of my favorite prayers. I like that it is specifically geared toward evening use, making for a wonderful way to wind down at the end of a busy day. Evening Prayers is a wonderful addition to my daily Bible reading program, and while I have been reading in the month of December I plan on beginning this book with the New Year and using it as an evening devotional for 2015. I think this book would make a wonderful gift for anyone looking to find a little quiet time at the end of the day to reflect and pray.

A Thoughtful Way to End Your Day with Prayer

Christoph Blumhardt (1842 – 1919) was a German Lutheran theologian. He didn't publish these prayers when he was alive. They were spoken prayers shared with his friends, including Deitrich Bonhoeffer, Emil Brunner, Karl Barth and others. Because the prayers were spoken, we can feel the author's voice in the beautiful language. I love the feeling of peace reading these prayers gives you.

Each prayer is accompanied by a scripture reference. This makes them perfect for meditation and devotion at the end of the day. There are 365 prayers making this devotional perfect for a year's worth of worship. Often it's difficult to find time in the evening to speak with God, but these prayers make it easy. Sometimes words don't flow, but these prayers and scripture give you a way to start.

I highly recommend this devotional. It would make a wonderful gift or an addition to your own collection of devotionals.

This is a beautiful book of the evening prayers taken from the devotions of Christopher Friedrick Blumhardt (1842-1919). These are dated daily passages for a full year. Each page has a bible verse, most often New International Version, followed by an evening prayer.

I come from the teachings of a church that didn't like reading prayers, but just praying from the heart, so I did not really know what to expect from this book. I am so happy to have it for the coming year because reading these thoughtful and powerful prayers spark a burden in my heart to pray more often and more thoughtfully. Although written many years ago, these are easy to read and understand, and not written with outdated terms or phrases. I very highly recommend this as a gift or for your own personal devotions.

I like this book. These are good prayers with which to end the day. They are simple yet positive and help me realize that God has been working during the day. When he writes about suffering or pain it is with a view to what God is doing in the world. Some may be hesitant at using printed prayers but I find they help my focus at the end of the day.

EVENING PRAYERS FOR EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR is a great prayer starter for people to begin their evening (or morning) prayers when they don’t know how to start.

They begin with a verse of scripture for you to read and ponder, then go into the prayer, just a short paragraph or two for you to pray.

If you like to read prayers, or need prayer prompts, or don’t know what to say when you pray, then EVENING PRAYERS FOR EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR is a great book for you to consider.

The readings start with a verse of scripture which the author brings into our evening. Each day is short and to the point and gives one a morsel with which they can ponder the things of the Lord and how they can become more like Him. A wonderful way to end each and every day of the year.
