He is Morgan Scott, an English nobleman once held captive on the high seas by the brutal Spanish master and crew who murdered his family. Now he sails the seas as a British privateer, taking his revenge by attacking and plundering Spanish ships.

She is Luca Santiego, forced from the shelter of a convent and destined for a marriage arranged by her father. When her ship is attacked by pirates, she dons the garb of a nun and prays for mercy. Yet amid the flames of the sinking ship, the blue-eyed captain is seized by an unbidden passion for the beauty who kneels before him. Driven by a wicked desire to claim her as his spoils in an act of vengeance against the Spanish, he is torn by an overwhelming response to Luca's sweet innocence, and aches with need for her. Yet he vows he will have her only when his tender kisses bring about her willing surrender to a magnificent, undeniable love.

En brazos del pirata by Connie Mason

Reread. I originally read this book so many year s ago.

3.5 stars.

What an adventure this book was! Pirates and royalty and damsels in distress! Pretty fun stuff.

Although this is a Fun swash buckling tale, it is also quite the Bodice Ripper which I did not know when I picked it. But the story was really good and I loved that most of it took place at sea.

The two main characters in this luscious romance had plenty of chemistry. I liked reading about Morgan and Luca's adventures at sea and how they slowly become obsessed with each other. And the supporting cast were quite fun as well.

This is not the type of book I generally read as I am not a huge Pirate fan but funny enough this book sort of changed my mind on that. I enjoyed every bit of it.

If you want a book with romance, adventure, pirates, royalty, bad guys, good guys, and just an all around fun adventure you've found it here. Very enjoyable.

MINI REVIEW:

I read "Taken By You" when it was released back in February 1996, so my memory of it is fuzzy. I do recall the bad Spanish. What kind of name is Luca Santiego for a heroine? Is she a Mario Puzo character or a Spanish convent-bred noblewoman? It's both bad Spanish & bad Italian. Lucia (de) Santiago would be apropos. Connie Mason's Peggy Hill's "espanole" skills aside, the other major thing I remember is that Luca cut her hair short to pose as a nun so the English pirates who raided her ship wouldn't ravish her, and the cover got that wrong. It's like some industry rule states no woman can have short hair on the cover of a historical romance novel (outside of old Harlequin Historicals). Even if she's wearing a dress and has giant, heaving bosoms, nope, short hair equals a dude, can't have that.

Anyway, this was a typical enemies-to-lovers/ revenge romance with plenty of "I hate you, you're my enemy," "I want you," "Let's do it like bunnies," "Oh no you're still my enemy," "I love you," and convenient plot resolution. Besides, I liked this book better when it was called The Spanish Rose. Connie Mason fans know what they're getting when they read her works, but this was a bit subpar for my tastes. I prefer her Leisure/Dorchester books as opposed to her Avons. They were dumber, but spicier and more fun.

Why does this keep happening ? This is not the first book where the H thinks one thing at one time and then thinks other thing at another time. For example there is a moment where the H thinks he will only marry for love and there is another moment where he thinks he had planned to marry some girl on the marriage market, leave her raise their children in a country while he lives in London and has a mistress instead of marrying the h. Where is the logic?

Another issue with the H was that he said very cruel words to the h and it was disgusting. The H was disgustingly stupid and an unhonourable coward.
“Lord knows I’ve tried my damnedest to work you out of my system. Admitting my weakness for you is excessively painful. I don’t like feeling this way about any woman. I always thought I’d have children one day, but having children with Spanish blood sickens me. God forbid that you should quicken with my child, for I don’t know if I could accept that. That’s one of the reasons I
left you in the country. Out of sight, out of mind.”

Decent Connie Mason book but I've definitely read better. Did have some fave tropes of pregnancy and baby.

To be honest, tho, the line where the hero takes heroine's virginity, and he says, "I'm all the way in" took me out of the story. I was laughing so hard at that line. It took me a bit to get back into the book after that.

Bit of forced seduction but was typical of this time of writing. Still, decent read and entertaining but not what I would call a keeper except bc of the cover. LOL

English pirate Morgan Scott capture the ship that Luca, an aspiring Spanish nun being forced to marry, is on.

I have fond memories of this book, and when I returned to read it, it still holds up. What's great about this book is that even when Morgan is being domineering and distrustful, he is never cruel or spiteful. Even with his hatred of Spaniards, he always treats Luca well; the worst he does is be neglectful. I was a little frustrated with the many obstacles that were constantly blocking their way, but overall, I found this a very enjoyable read.

"Taken By You" by Connie Mason is a historical romance novel that tells the story of Luca (I needed some time to get used to the name) who is captured by the dashing and flirtatious pirate, Captain Morgan Scot. It was a so-and-so read and didn't keep me on edge. What made me lose interest was the Hero's action somewhere in the middle of the book. He abandoned the heroine, which was now his wife, and went to Queen Elizabeth's court.

He allowed another woman, Lady Jane, to be all over him, to hug, hold and kiss him just because he didn't want to displease the Queen who offered to him to write an annulment for his current marriage and wed him to Lady Jame because she was a rich English and not the enemy, Spanish. The heroine goes to him and actually sees him with Lady Jane. They kissed and were in bed, but they weren't doing anything yet. The heroine, Luca, got angry but once the hero started talking sweetly and kissing her, the deep passion made her incapable to deny him and they ended up having wild sex. Lol. No. Hard no. He deserved to grovel and she should have denied him sex, not fall in his arms like a fool.

Anyway, from that point on I skipped several pages just because I wanted to get to the end.

The heroine is incredibly frustrating—pathetic and completely spineless. When she catches the hero with other women, she doesn’t even give him a chance to grovel. Instead, she falls right back into his arms. Sure, he doesn’t technically cheat, but he wants to. He’s actively trying to forget her and move on, even though he can’t. That’s emotional cheating in my book. She should have left him, but instead she continues living in his house while he openly enjoys courting other women and shamelessly flirting with OWs. It was honestly gross to read.
The hero is even worse. I hated him. He’s desperate to erase the heroine from his life, yet—conveniently—he’s incapable of feeling anything for anyone else. That doesn’t excuse his behavior; it just makes him more infuriating.
On top of that, the misunderstanding trope between the H and h was painfully lame and dragged on far too long. It felt stupid, unnecessary, and did nothing but trigger my anxiety. I ended up skimming large sections just to get to the HEA, which honestly wasn’t worth the journey.

This is an action packed story with an English privateer, Morgan Scott, who plunders Spanish ships in the name of Elizabeth I and for revenge!
When he takes Luca Santiego prisoner after sinking the ship she is travelling on, he is instantly drawn to her even though she is disguised as a nun. These two have histories of pain and tragedy to work through before they can ever be together.
Reflective of the genre when this book was written, (1990s), the plot is more extrovert action than introverted reflection. It is fast paced and would translate well to film.
Enjoyable if you just want a swashbuckling Errol Flynn -esque bit of escapism.

Can’t finish this as I can’t stand the arrogant and brute Morgan. Months after marrying Luca, he already sought for a temporary pleasure in another woman in which the dalliance was detailed. I hate OW in romance so I have to DNF this.

I wish Luca was made of a stronger spine and leave his cheating, raggedy ass!

I’ve always loved Connie Mason’s books. So much passion, so many twists and turns, real history and real people interwoven. What more could you want? A handsome privateer, a beautiful Spanish woman, Queen Elizabeth and the Spanish Armada.
