Very Good! Provides a general overview of Amish and Mennonite traditions, that have mostly similarities with a few interesting differences. The author's ancestors emigrated from Europe in 1705 to Pennsylvania to escape religious persecution.
This book includes heartwarming tidbits about the author's family, hymns, and recipes that use simple ingredients to create hearty meals. Such as: Cheesy Breakfast Casserole, Chicken Corn Soup, Baked Ham, Mashed Turnips, and Candied Sweet Potatoes.
She writes of her grandparents: "Their house always smelled like good food, the kitchen being in the center of the house and my grandmother almost always cooking" (kindle p. 17). 🥧
"This year, I want to focus on the true meaning of Christmas and not the commercial one" (kindle p. 19). 🕊 💕
I enjoyed reading about Sarah’s early life, and could just picture her Grandmother meeting her at the road and helping her cross, and then bringing her into her home and kitchen for some homemade cookies. What wonderful memories, and envy her as I never had a Grandparent. We are given a look at some of the traditions that are kept in Amish/Mennonite homes, and a look at her personal thoughts. Loved the sweet prayers, and then we have a wonderful assortment of mouth watering recipes. There is also a link where you can contribute some of your own recipes, and will be acknowledged as a contributor. The only problem I have with this keeper of a book is that it is an e-book; I like to be able to turn the pages of a cookbook. I find them harder to use and find with the electronic, but that is my personal feeling. An example of one of the recipes that will be coming to my dinner table:
AMISH CASSEROLE Ingredients ✦ 1 pound ground beef ✦ 1/4 cup brown sugar ✦ ⅛ teaspoon black pepper ✦ 1/4 teaspoon salt ✦ 1 can condensed tomato soup ✦ 1 can condensed cream of chicken soup ✦ 1 (12 ounce) package wide egg noodles ✦ 10 slices American cheese Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 350° F. 2. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. 3. Add egg noodles and cook until tender, about 7 minutes. 4. Drain and return to the pot. 5. Mix in the cream of chicken soup until noodles are coated. 6. Crumble the ground beef into a large skillet over medium-high heat. 7. Drain the grease, and stir in the tomato soup, brown sugar, pepper and salt.
8. Spread half of the beef in the bottom of a greased 21/2 quart casserole dish. 9. Arrange 5 slices of cheese over the beef. 10. Top with half of the noodles, then repeat layers ending with cheese on top. 11. Bake for 35 minutes in the preheated oven, until cheese is browned and sauce is bubbly.

I an advance copy of this electronic book for my honest review, and was not required to give a positive review.
The one thing about cookbooks is that the author can do so many different things when creating their own cookbook; no one cookbook is the same, unless one uses the same old lay-out that everyone has been time and time again, pages of recipes with no inside story to them and or family background.
Not too many authors have a personal ancestry connection with Amish or Mennonites. I guess that's what I loved about Sarah Price's Plain & Simple Traditions: Amish & Mennonite Holidays book/cookbook. Sarah gives her personal inside story of her growing up years near her strict Mennonite grandparents.
After thirteen years of missing my Mennonite Great-grandmother Lillian Maye and over twenty years for my Great-grandfather Daniel, Sarah had me reminiscing about them and spending Sundays with them when I was growing-up. Amazing how one human-being can be the rock to their family and when they are no longer here on earth to keep that family together, everyone seems to do their own thing; it's very sad. I will treasure my memories of my Great-grandparents.
I just came to realize that I had more than one set of Mennonites in my family, sadly I didn't know it when I was growing-up that they were Mennonite, nor that they could have taught me family history and traditions Sarah Price should be praised for writing her story in a cookbook.
I look forward to reading more of Sarah's work.
I received a free copy of this book by the author with no money exchanged for my review. The only thing that was asked of me was for an HONEST review and that's what my review is an honest review in my own words.
