It's Christmas time, and newly engaged Jade Calhoun and her fiance Kane are having a party at Summer House in Cypress Settlement. The tree is decorated, the mistletoe is in place, and the crab puffs are to die for. Nothing can spoil this celebration...except for some wayward magic and a pesky ghost who crashes the party. Engaged off Bourbon Street is a 6500 word short story. It is number 3.5 in the Jade Calhoun series, right after Demons of Bourbon Street. Originally published in Holiday Wishes in 2012.
Deanna is a native Californian, transplanted to the slower paced lifestyle of southeastern Louisiana. When she isn't writing, she is often goofing off with her husband in New Orleans, playing with her two shih tzu dogs, making glass beads, or out hocking her wares at various bead shows across the country. This was a perfect entry in the Jade Calhoun saga as she moves forward with her new life in New Orleans. This was an intimate look at all the mains as they come together to help Jade and Kane celebrate. Everyone is feeling the holiday spirit and Jade is just happy to be able to share her happiness with those she loves. Even though it is a short story it has the impact of a full length novel in both plot and character development. These characters are true to who they are and even though there are background people, who are never heard from, things move quickly from start to finish.
Jade and Kane are having their engagement/Christmas party at the house in the bayou that he did not really go to until he met Jade. Jade made a promise to Pyper that she would string mistletoe all around the house to make sure she had a chance to kiss Ian, and she has misplaced it. In order to locate it Jade decides to use magic, and we know how that can go for her. The spell is cast, the guests arrive, and the mishaps ensue.
This was a nice quick read that made me smile and shake my head. You would think Jade would learn, but then if she did we would not be so entertained. I would say fans should definitely read this!
I was looking for a quick read one afternoon and I stumbled upon this novella. The last book I finished in this series is book 3 so it was perfect timing to read 3.5.
Some Things I Liked
Holiday setting. I love a holiday side story. Given that this series has a lot of side characters, I liked getting to see them in a fun holiday party setting. Character development. I liked that we learned about a lot of the side characters. It’s the worst when a side story feels like it doesn’t add to the main plot at all. This felt like it did. While I don’t think the information gained here won’t be reiterated in book 4, I liked that I felt like I was learning new things about the world and characters of the series.
One Thing I Wasn’t Crazy About
Cheesy. There were aspects of the story (and the series in general) that are a bit cheesy. It’s a short story so I can’t really say what without spoiling it but, I think some of the antics were a little silly and the characters acted a bit immaturely.
Series Value
I like this series. I’m not rushing to finish it but I enjoy these books. They’re a little cheesy at times but I like the themes. Furthermore, this book is not really needed for the series. The reader gets some extra side character info that I’m sure can be gleaned from going straight from book 3 to 4 but this was a fun side story.
Final Thoughts
This was a cute holiday story for a series that I’ve been working on reading. Is it necessary? No. Is it fun? Yes.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Recommendations for Further Reading
Southern Magic by Amy Boyles – if you liked the southern setting as well as the witches element, try this series by Amy Boyles. Similar to the Jade Calhoun series, there are several books in the series. The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh – if you liked the setting, magic, and drama but are looking for something with a historical fiction element, try this duology by Renée Ahdieh. The sequel is hitting shelves in October 2020. The Vine Witch by Luanne G. Smith – if you like stories about witches, definitely read this series by Luanne G. Smith. It’s set in France but the story is fantastic.
This quick novella to celebrate Kane and Jade's was a fun story that did exactly what it was supposed to do and not much more.
It brought all of our favorite characters together in a holiday setting and added a sprinkle of shenanigans to build the futurare of the story.
I think there was a lot of potential for us to get more from the characters we know and love as well as the chaos causer. Instead it felt like a lot of fluff to introduce a new problem for Jade to solve.
I was excited to get something more interesting, but I guess this was cute for what it was.
I have been provided with a copy of Engaged off Bourbon Street by the author for an impartial review. This is a short story in the Jade Calhoun series that takes place between Demons of Bourbon Street and Angels of Bourbon Street. In this short story we see what Jade can get herself up to during the Christmas holiday. This short story was just so cute and I really wish there had been more. I can’t wait to see what’s next from this author.
Hahaha, This is the first book by Deanna Chase I have ever read and it is cute, fun, and sassy/sexy can't wait to read the rest of the Jade Calhoun series and anything else I come across by this author. What happens when a witch lights spelled candles at an engagement party?? You get a ghost who causes mischief, and anyone she tells to do something doing it very literally... Hahaha, I can't wait to see where the rest of this series goes. Quick read.
A humorous short but interesting story! Ghost can be frisky but this ghost, Camille , will not get the last word. Christmas is getting close and Jade and Kane are having a party at her new house with mistletoe and some interesting things are about to happen. Be care what you say or wish for, lol!
At what was supposed to be an engagement party for Kane and Jade, odd things start to happen in their new home. Jade unknowingly spells her friends and a ghost attached to the house is revealed.
This was the perfect short story for Jade and her friends. Nothing that they do can be uneventful. This short story had just as much fun and adventure as a full length Jade Calhoun novel.
Engaged Off Bourbon Street is a 2014 Bayou Moon Publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This super short story was certainly an usual Christmas themed story. Kane and Jade are having a Christmas/ engagement party, but some spelled candles and mistletoe reek havoc on their guest causing them to literally take Jade's suggestions to them which has come extremely wild consequences.
I couldn't help but chuckle a few times while reading this one. A ghost gets involved with in the story too and helps Jade realize what is causing her friends to behave so strange. Although the story is very short, it is worth checking out no matter what time of year it is. You will find yourself smiling at the screwball effects magic sometimes has. Overall 3.5 rounded to 4
A very funny short story that happens between books 3 and 4. It tells the story of the ghost Camille and what she does during Kane and Jade's engagement party that then causes the events that happen in book 4. You will definitely love this short story, it will having you laughing and shaking your head thinking "oh my" but in a good way.
The continuing story of Jade Calhoun and the chunky, sexy dream walker,Kane. In this short novella, you really fly thru the pages...and before you know it,it's done, leaving you wanting more..but then again so do her full length books, lol how can you not fall in love with all the wonderful characters ???? And yes,Kane is my book boyfriend so hands off ladies..lol
It was cute and I know that it was a novella, but it was the shortest novella I ever read, I don't read that quickly and I think I finished it in a half hour (maybe less) and it seemed to start and end extremely abruptly, which really sort of threw me off. I really like the other books in the series and I want to read #4, but this was just sort of random
Funny and lighthearted! I love Jade Calhoun. She's always getting into trouble. Even in this short story, a simple spell goes wrong and hilarity ensues. It definitely left me wanting more, as all of Deanna Chase's books seem to do.
Its a funny story, as usual the gangs all here and creating Chaos.. I mean it's magic what do we expect... And intrucing Camille who seems to have it out for Jane... Lol poor Jane can she catch a break? Oh who am I kidding this chick has it all. I'd love a Dream walking fiancé... Read on people!
It's a side book from the series. Holiday themed as the title and photo show and state. I do really love this series. It's my get away from reality series and I wish they could come out at a rate of one a week! I'm on this authors team!
