The surface of the world is shrouded in a deadly, mutative Mist... and it's spreading. Mana, the magical force keeping it at bay, is running dry. A decade of research has failed, leaving sky-dwelling Zephyria and subterranean Geova ready to go to war, each convinced the other is to blame.
With only a year remaining before total collapse, Maeryn takes matters into her own hands. Joined by Dan, a gifted alchemist, and Frankie, a manic engineer, she sets off on a journey of a lifetime.

When a story opens with the end of the world already in motion, you expect chaos. What makes this novel unforgettable is that, instead of surrendering to despair, it chooses determination.

The premise alone is gripping: a mutative Mist swallowing the surface, mana draining away, and two civilizations sky-bound Zephyria and subterranean Geova on the brink of war, each convinced the other is responsible. The stakes feel immediate from page one. There’s no slow burn into danger. The clock is already ticking.

But what truly elevates this story is Maeryn. She isn’t waiting for prophecy or permission. She isn’t chosen by destiny in some grand spectacle. She simply sees that a year remains before collapse and decides to act. That quiet, stubborn resolve makes her deeply compelling. Her intelligence and emotional depth anchor the narrative in a way that makes the epic scale feel personal.

Dan and Frankie add dynamic texture to the journey. The gifted alchemist and the manic engineer could easily have been archetypes, but instead, they feel layered and alive. Their banter lightens the tension without undermining the urgency, and their individual talents make the solution feel earned rather than convenient.

The world-building is immersive and imaginative. The contrast between Zephyria’s sky-dwelling culture and Geova’s subterranean existence is rich with political tension and philosophical differences. The magic system centered on mana depletion is clear, purposeful, and integrated into both the plot and the world’s looming collapse. Nothing feels decorative; everything matters.

What surprised me most was the emotional core beneath the apocalyptic stakes. This isn’t just a race to stop the Mist. It’s about responsibility. About refusing inherited narratives of blame. About collaboration in a world desperate for division.

The pacing is relentless in the best way, each discovery tightening the timeline, each setback sharpening the danger. And yet, amid the urgency, the story still makes room for friendship, sacrifice, and the fragile hope that keeps them moving forward.

By the final chapters, I was completely invested not just in whether they would save their world, but in who they would become in the process. Inventive, high-stakes, and emotionally grounded, this is epic fantasy with both brains and heart. Five stars. I’d follow Maeryn into the Mist again in a heartbeat.

This damn book is a masterpiece! I swallowed it whole and want more. This book has me hooked and I love it so much.

It has so much good sass, banter and humor in it, while still being on the serious side to a degree that it needs to be for this topic.

Friendship has a huge part in it as well as the quality of it.

Every main character and side character has its part which they play perfectly and logically while being pictured as real living/dead people.

Romance has not much of a part in it. It's more plot heavy tho you can read that some characters will walk that road definitely in the near future. And let me say it: Those interactions are damn cute and funny (and sassy).

Also the whole book is written really well and smooth. As well as the plot is going on a straight line and in a comfortable pace, neither too fast nor too slow.

I can't say it enough. I love this book. It's interesting, it's balanced well and the characters and interactions are chief's kiss.

It's that kind of book where I mutate to a monster of weird sounds and movements, that good it is.

And, the ends of every situations are damn satisfying.

This book gets all the stars! And I will read this story on Royal Road further.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
