The first few chapters of this book explore the sadness of childhood nostalgia, grief of outgrowing relationships, uncertainty of the future, indecisive fears fuelled by anxiety, and other personal experiences woven in its seams in what reads like journal-entries transformed into evocative prose. At first, I did find it difficult to connect with these themes, but for someone with this experience they may resonate with the words!
However, the final chapters boosted my engagement with their uplifting shift. With direct address to the readers, the poems express the joy that can be found with breaking free of cycles, trusting your path, seeking softness, and finding healthy love. It offers readers to reflect on whether they are choosing their true self, or whether they are trapped in an amalgamation of the people in your past and the memories that hold you there.
The poems did well to convey how childhood nostalgia can smoothen the waves of memories into a blurry happy ending, even though they are a destructive storm, and that letting go can encourage positive change to how you view yourself and life. ‘Ebb and Flow’ gives readers space to consider whether they will decide to swim with the tide, or continue to struggle against it.🌊📖💙
