Harry Manning is out to avenge the death of his teenage son Freddie, who crashed through the floor of a disused building called the Tannery.
The official Coroner’s verdict was death by misadventure, but Harry believes Nathan Webb was responsible. Webb is a local businessman, and owner of the Tannery which he intends to redevelop. He’s known to hang around with the young kids at the Tannery at weekends, drinking , doing drugs and playing games! He’s a thoroughly unsavoury character, a real villain, but he has the great and the good in his power.

Harry’s relentless quest for the truth leads him into some very dark and dangerous places, that almost make him give up - almost, but not quite, when a chance meeting with Webb’s wife Erin suddenly gives him an unexpected ally! They may both live to regret it!

I loved Tom Bale’s earlier books, and it’s been a while since his last, so I was excited to see him back with his latest book, Deadly Games. I wasn’t disappointed, and what Bale does particularly well is, he takes very ordinary people and thrusts them into extraordinary circumstances where their personal reality is shattered by events beyond their control. Makes for great reading though!

EXCERPT: I ran barefoot along the path and glimpsed a tall, thin figure vanishing around a bend in the road.
The boy from the Tannery.
I hesitated, unsure whether to pursue him, then registered that the front door was swinging shut . . . and my keys were in the house.
I'm not quite sure how I made it, but once inside I sank to the floor, panting and groaning. Finally I was able to snatch up the sheet of paper. The message was scrawled in biro, the handwriting large and uneven.

ABOUT 'DEADLY GAMES': It wasn't just a fall.

It was a game…

And Freddie Manning lost.

Grieving father Harry Manning is determined to expose the dark secrets behind the party that cost his son his life. The courts ruled it an accident, but Harry is certain that Nathan Webb is responsible for Freddie's death, and he will do anything to prove it.

As Harry seeks revenge, he finds an unlikely ally in Nathan’s wife, Erin. Nobody knows better than Erin Webb just how violent Nathan can be, but her own private torment compels her to help Harry. Even when it means putting both their lives on the line.

MY THOUGHTS: An uncomfortable and realistic read dealing primarily with grief and domestic violence.

Losing a child is every parent's worst nightmare and every parent deals (or not) with it in their own way. Harry and Anita's son's death is ruled a death by misadventure and Harry's refusal to accept this is the final nail in the coffin of their marriage, although they remain good friends.

So while Anita is getting on with her new life, Harry is looking for someone to blame for Freddie's death, and he has Nathan Webb firmly in his sights. The friendship he cultivates with Nathan's wife, Erin, only complicates matters and puts both their lives in danger.

I can't say I enjoyed this book. In fact, it left me feeling unsettled which is, I think, exactly what the author intended. It is grim and violent and, in places, quite sickening. But the story, although I didn't warm to any of the characters except, strangely enough, Anita, is one that needs telling.

Even though I could relate to Erin, I didn't warm to her. I did get angry at Harry when he kept texting her when she asked him to stop, fearful for her own safety. Nathan sent cold shivers down my spine. And, as I have already said, I liked Anita. She is an honest woman, a kind woman.

While I didn't love this read, I did appreciate it.

Harry Manning and his wife Anita, attended the inquest into their son, Freddie's death, at the Tannery. The verdict of misadventure infuriated Harry and he was determined to prove that Nathan Webb was responsible. In the meantime, Anita left Harry, going to live with Gareth, Harry's business partner and good friend. A strange situation that Harry wasn't surprised about. But he felt untethered, frustrated, adrift. Could he find evidence about Freddie's death, after the police had closed the case?

Erin Webb, Nathan's wife, was a typical domestic violence victim, with no idea how to get away from her husband. He was brutal and the "wasps" that kept watch on their home when Nathan was out - young teens in Nathan's pay - made Erin's life a further hell. She was at the beach one day, staring at the waves, when she spotted a swimmer in the distance. And that was how Erin and Harry met. She wanted to help Harry in his quest, but she knew what Nathan would do to her. But would they be able to find evidence to convict Nathan, or would Erin and Harry both end up dead at Nathan's hands?

Deadly Games by Tom Bale is an intense and gritty thriller which I enjoyed. I felt so much for Erin, begging her to leave him. But she had her own agenda. And Harry was in such a grief filled spin that he lost his way a few times. An excellent tale which saw drugs, deadly games and the bullying cruelty of a man who'd never had no said to him. Recommended.

First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Tom Bale, and Boldwood Books for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

Always eager to find new authors, I reached for this ARC by Tom Bale. A fast-paced thriller set in the U.K., I was ready for something intense and full of twists. Harry Manning is a man who has lost his way after the death of his son at a house party. Harry knows that Nathan Webb is responsible, even if the courts ruled it an accident. Now, Harry is determined to get to the bottom of what happened. Harry’s hopes for revenge link with the apparent animosity Nathan’s wife, Erin, has towards the abusive man she calls a husband. Erin and Harry soon work together to bring Nathan down, even if that means risking their own safety. Nathan knows something and no one will rest until all is revealed. A decent read by Tom Bale that had me wondering until the final pages.

I like finding new authors who are able to grab my attention. Tom Bale does that with this thriller that takes the reader on quite the adventure through the darkest parts of society. Things progress from the opening pages, as Harry seeks answers when the courts fail him. The story gains momentum and provides a gripping set of facts that become the core of this piece. While I was not fully sold on Bale’s story, it had good moments onto which I could latch as I made my way through it.

Character development is a key to keeping the reader invested in the piece. Bale delivers a strong set of characters and has them delving into key areas to reveal truths the story needs to stay relevant. Bale finds a handful of key characters who flavour the story well and keep the reader wondering. He does a decent job keeping the reader asking questions as the pieces fall into place and perhaps wondering just how well we know those who grace the pages of the story.

Bale forces the reader to play sleuth from the outset, hoping for answers about this apparent ‘accident’ that cost one young man his life. This comes with a number of surprises from the outset and ensures that nothing is quite as it seems, which fuels the push for the book. With unpredictable developments, the reader is pushed into a handful of twists that send the story in a free fall. I may not have been completely moved by the book, but Tom Bale did find something that kept me reading to see how it all played out.

Kudos, Mr. Bale, for a thriller that had potential for success.

Harry Manning doesn’t believe the inquest result, that the fall in which his son Freddie lost his life, was an accident. He wants “tough guy” and local businessman Nathan Webb to pay, as he has been holding parties at The Tannery which is an old building, planned for demolition. Harry meets Erin, Nathan’s wife, who becomes an ally, and together, they look for the truth, regarding that fateful night.

This was a gripping, page turner which had me glued to the pages, from the start. Highly recommended.

Deadly Games by Tom Bale, Harry and Anita are leaving the inquest for their son Freddy’s death which was ruled misadventure something Harry doesn’t believe and he will not let it rest. losing their youngest son Freddy isn’t the only change in Harry‘s life because now that there’s a ruling Anita is moving out and moving in with Gareth Harry’s boss and best friend. something he has become resigned to and is even still friends with both of them. The man he blames for Freddy’s death is named Nathan Webb a “businessman“ and unofficially the town druglord. It’s an occupation he has inherited from his parents despite the fact Harry is intent on getting his revenge is only by accident that he meets Aaron Webb, Nathan‘s wife. Who he finds absolutely beautiful and he feels attracted to her but more than anything he wants her to help him find proof Nathan is responsible for the death of his son. Aaron however has problems of her own Nathan is controlling abusive and psychopathic not to mention unstable. she knows seeing Harry is dangerous but the more they see each other the more they want to the whole time Harry is getting nowhere with his investigation errands abuse is getting worse and then Harry goes missing. If you think I have given a lot of the story it really is no big deal because this book had me putting it down so I could slow my heart rate not joking this book is very intense and a doozy of an action crime thriller. I have never read a book by Tom Bale, but I can honestly say I will not pass up another one. Not only does he write likable characters but the twist in this book is so original that I gasped when I learned it I hope this book wins awards because it is definitely a five star read I really thought it was going to be a man who kicks ass and gets revenge but it is so different from that and so so good! #NetGalley, #TheBlindReviewer, #MyHonestReview,#TomBale, #DeadlyGames,

I am a very happy reader. Not only do we have a new book from Tom Bale, we have an excellent new book from Tom Bale. It really captures and typifies everything I love about this author's writing. My mystery, the suspense, the tension and the characters who I can really open my heart to. And Harry really is one of those characters. He's not your conventional hero by any means. He's no superman, out avenging his son, Freddie's, sudden death. Although he does set out on somewhat of a quest to try and get to the truth on what happened on that fateful night when Freddie fell, unaccepting of the Coroner's verdict as he is. If anything, Harry is someone who might be dismissed as a secondary character, a man willing to disappear into the background. A people pleaser in a way. But not when it comes to Freddie. For Freddie he would do anything, even if it means risking his own life.

What I like about this book is the way in which Tom Bale explores the very complex subject of grief, making all fof Harry's reactions seem plausible, even in the most dangerous and intense of moments. The initial stalking of the man he holds responsible for Freddie's death, Nathan Webb. The unexpected friendship with Nathan's wife, Erin. Even his own acceptance of his wife leaving him to move in with his business partner and pursuing the life Harry once dreamed they would lead. Nothing feels contrived, it just fits with Harry's personality, something that really endeared him to me. Yes he makes some very odd decisions, and takes risks beyond that of a rational person, but then grief is not a rational process. There is no single way to react, and all of his emotion can be felt just as much as his hunger for the truth. I found I was willing him on, hoping that he could come good in the face of what, in true Tom Bale fashion were going to be some very overwhelming odds.

Now Harry's is not the only story in play here. Erin plays a significant part in the novel, half of the narrative perspective being hers. She knows little of what happened to Freddie, but given her complicated, an understatement, relationship with Nathan, her willingness to help Harry proves to be the crucial point in the story, Theirs is an unexpected kinship and yet it works beautifully. Erin's life is laid bare on the page and at times this can be difficult to read. Yet it has a real air of reality about it, and the author handles some very tough scenes very carefully, giving enough detail not to belittle the traumatic nature of what occurs, but never using it in a gratuitous way just to shock. It gives a reason for Erin to hate Nathan as much as Harry, and momentum to help drive the story to the very high stakes, and dramatic conclusion.

There is a high level of tension and threat in this book, sometimes more overt and direct than others, but all creating that pitch perfect pacing that kept me completely glued to the page. The plot may not lead quite where you are expecting, but there are some real sit back in shock moments littered throughout the story that are quickly followed by those 'right on the edge of the seat' moments that always make me smile with thriller laden glee when I read a book by this author. Is justice served by the end of the book? Well, it depends on what your definition of justice is, I guess. But, with sweet moments of humour in amongst all of the emotion, it was everything I wanted and hadn't realised I was missing. A very welcome return from one of my favourite authors, and I can't wait to see what he has in store for us next. Definitely recommended.

This gripping emotionally charged thriller follows a grieving father’s relentless pursuit of justice after his teenage son dies under suspicious circumstances. While authorities rule the death a tragic accident, the father refuses to accept it—haunted by unanswered questions and a gut-deep certainty that something darker is at play.

As he digs deeper, Harry uncovers a dangerous world of drugs, intimidation, and criminal manipulation, all seemingly tied to one man Nathan Webb, a figure who hides behind charm and connections, but whose past is littered with secrets. With every step closer to the truth, the father risks everything: his safety, his sanity, and the fragile relationships left in his life.

Taut with suspense and raw emotion, this is a story about the power of a parent’s love, the cost of truth, and the courage it takes to stand up against those who believe they’re untouchable. It’s not just a fight for justice—it’s a battle for redemption.

The character development in this book is exceptional, with each individual evolving in authentic, emotionally resonant ways that deepen the story and forge a powerful connection with the reader.

Tom Bale delivers yet another exhilarating and suspense-filled thriller, masterfully weaving tension, twists, and emotional depth into a story that keeps readers hooked from the first page to the last.

What would you do if your teenage son died under suspicious circumstances, and the court ruled—after investigation—that it was simply a tragic accident?
No one to blame, case closed.
But as a parent, you can’t accept that. Deep down, you know something isn’t right, and you decide to seek the truth yourself—no matter the cost.

That’s exactly what happens to Freddie’s parents, especially his father, Harry. The author paints a vivid picture of his desperate search for answers, but the man Harry believes is responsible has covered his tracks well—with devastating consequences.

Would I call this book a thriller? Not really. For me, it’s hard to put this story into a single genre—it feels more like a blend of several. On one hand, there’s the suspense of Harry’s personal quest; on the other, the harrowing reality of domestic violence. Yet there’s also a softer layer—about second chances and healing—which gives the story emotional depth.

That said, I definitely enjoyed following the story from start to finish.

Now, about the characters.
Nathan is the perfect villain—cunning, calculating, and always one step ahead. He knows exactly how to protect himself and doesn’t hesitate to throw others under the bus if it helps him.
Harry, on the other hand, left me with mixed feelings. I admire his determination and the way he fights for what he believes in, but he’s also reckless—putting others in danger even when he realizes it. His heart is in the right place, but his judgment isn’t always.
And then there’s Erin, a victim who finds the strength to fight alongside Harry despite the risks. In many ways, it’s also her path to freedom. She’s compassionate, brave, and selfless—definitely my favorite character in the story.

All in all, this was a strong, engaging read that kept me invested the whole way through.
4 stars from me.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of Deadly Games by Tom Bale

This is the first book I’ve read by Tom Bale, and I really enjoyed it. The story begins with a tragedy at a party, but what seems like a terrible accident takes a darker turn. Harry Manning’s quiet determination to uncover the truth about his child’s death was authentic and moving. I liked the contrast with Erin Webb’s desperate bid to escape and take revenge on her controlling husband. Their unlikely alliance of two ordinary people was plotted well and drew me into the story.

The pacing is steady, the tension builds nicely. Bale balances grief, revenge and morality in a way that feels realistic and well researched. A gripping, character-driven thriller that kept me hooked throughout.

This incredible novel begins with an inquest into Harry and Anita's son Freddie's death after falling through the top floor of a building where he and his friends partied with owner, Nathan Webb's permission. It's clear that Nathan is a billionaire who controls everything and everyone around him--including his young, beautiful wife, Erin. There are so many great issues in this novel that it begs the question, "Do you really know who your friends are??"

Harry is heartbroken after his youngest son is found dead in a derelict building and although the case was taken to court it was considered a fatality. He is now also alone at his home as his wife left him to live with his boss (and best friend), so his mind is full time focused on finding how to prove his son did not die by accident but by Nathan Webb's (the building's owner) wrongdoing. Harry will find himself in a web of problems and violence and in the middle of this turmoil he'll find love again. Deadly Games is a story about family, unconditional love that binds fathers/sons/mothers/daughters, second chances in life, the value of truth and the importance of accepting it, even when it's not what one wishes. Great plot and really entertaining!

Freddie Manning died whilst at a party in The Tannery, a derelict building which is awaiting demolition, the courts deemed it an accident and nobody was held accountable, but his father Harry is sure that the owner of the building, Nathan Webb, is responsible for his death, he's certain it was no accident and is determined to get to the truth. As he does his own investigations, intent on revenge, he unexpectedly befriends Nathan's wife Erin who, despite knowing how dangerous Nathan is, wants to help Harry uncover the truth but are they putting themselves at risk by doing this and what will the repercussions be?

Deadly Games is the latest thriller by this author, told from the perspectives of both Harry and Erin. It's a fast paced read with some great characterisations that are well crafted by Bale, some of them being very unsavoury. The chapters are short in this story which is full of twists and turns and it's quite unbelieveable the danger that Harry keeps putting himself in and even Erin sails very close to the wind on a few occasions, especially knowing the punishments that will be inflicted on her by Nathan every time she does something he doesn't approve of. This is another intriguing read, which is also very dark in places, showing the lengths a grieving father will go to, to try and gain justice for the child he has lost, from an author that I've read previously, though not for a while, and have enjoyed and this one was no exception, a story covering some intense subjects including domestic violence, that keeps you guessing throughout and one which I definitely recommend.

I'd like to thank Boldwood Books and Netgalley for inviting me to read this, I will post my review on Amazon and Goodreads.

Oh Wow! This was a tense book. The author definitely puts his characters and also the reader through the mill with a tale of tragedy and the search for the truth.

The death of Freddie at a party is something that Harry Manning is not coping with; the coroner's verdict was death by misadventure. The focus of Harry's rage is Nathan, a local businessman who deals in property development, amongst other things.

Harry's marriage is done, but they get on really well. Their children have grown up and are living their own lives. Just Harry alone with his thoughts, until he bumps into a woman at the beach. Erin Webb, the wife of Nathan.

The story is very complex and there are a lot of moving parts, several characters and subplots. This story is not just of Harry and the death of his son; it goes much deeper and far more devious than that. With scuh a lot going on, the author keeps track of the different threads and gradually draws them together until an unexpected conclusion.

This is a cracking read. The pacing is good as you follow Harry and the others through their thoughts and perceptions. It really draws the reader into the mindset, and this, as well as the plotting, makes this a book that I could not put down. (Kept me up reading till almost 2 am!)

This is a crime thriller and mystery, but it is also about family, friendship and the feeling of not knowing the truth. This feeling becomes all-encompassing and is what drives Harry to do things he would not have even contemplated, and it is not just him either!

Brilliant book, some great characters, loads of twists and surprises. All in all, a fabulous book that I would definitely recommend.

Deadly Games, by Tom Bale is a gripping emotional thriller where grief and vengeance collide in a dangerous hunt for justice.

Harry Manning is a father shattered by loss. The courts have closed the book on his son Freddie’s death, branding it a tragic party accident. But Harry is convinced the truth is far darker, and that Nathan Webb, a man with influence and a sinister reputation, is to blame. Unable to move on, Harry becomes consumed by his need to expose Nathan and make him pay.

Unexpectedly, Harry finds support from the last person he could have imagined, Nathan’s wife, Erin Webb. Erin knows better than anyone the violence Nathan is capable of. She’s trapped in her own private nightmare, and helping Harry might be her only chance to break free, even if it means endangering herself and the one person still depending on her.

Together, they dig deeper into the circumstances surrounding Freddie’s death, and uncover shocking truths about that fateful night, truths that someone powerful is determined to keep hidden. Every new clue brings fresh danger, proving that the game they’ve stepped into is still very much in play, and the stakes are deadly.

This is a psychological thriller full of suspense and emotion, which demonstrates the lengths people will go for justice or to protect themselves.

Deadly Games is a very good thriller that kept me hooked.

I would like to thank both Netgalley and Boldwood Books for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

This was a brilliant fast-paced thriller, intense and full of twists. Harry Manning is a man who has lost his way after the death of his son at a house party. Harry knows that Nathan Webb is responsible, even if the courts ruled it an accident. Now, Harry is determined to get to the bottom of what happened.

This certainly grabbed my attention and kept me hooked in. We were taken on an incredible adventure. Things progress from the opening pages, as Harry seeks answers when the courts fail him. It is an intricate story, full of tangled webs of deceit and lies.

We meet Erin, who is Nathan's wife and we soon discover that Nathan is abusive and controlling towards her. We are a witness to some incredibly uncomfortable scenes that she faces at the hands of her husband, both physically and mentally.

After a chance meeting between Harry and Erin, the story develops from there as we see them work together to uncover the truth and unravel the lies.

Bale delivers a strong set of characters and they continue to be well developed throughout the book. .Erin was definitely my favourite character. Brave, strong, facing her own battles and making difficult decisions, risking the wrath of her husband. I felt like I was continuously asking questions as the pieces of the puzzle fall fall into place.

The twists and turns are relentless. With a number of surprises from the outset, challenging what we are reading and nothing is as it seems, which fuels the momentum for the book. With unpredictable developments, the reader is pushed along through to the really terrifying and emotional ending.

I really loved this book.

So good to see Tom Bale back with another rollercoaster thriller, after a small hiatus since Survive. Deadly Games is certainly a pretty deadly comeback, with a bunch of characters I feel we all could know in real life, but who just happen to have been thrown into some pretty horrendous life or death situations. We start with Harry, whose son Freddie has died not that many months ago. Did he fall or was he pushed? This pretty much forms the crux of the matter, as Harry, never prone to violence and a self-proclaimed coward (in a good way!) , ultimately decides he has nothing left to lose in getting to the root of the matter.

There are so many wheels spinning, but never does it feel like there are too many; we meet Erin, wife of the man Harry thinks killed his son; we meet Anita, Harry's wife, who definitely doesn't want him to pursue this quest; and we meet Nathan, the man whom Harry is positive had a role in Freddie's death. What I do enjoy about Tom Bale's books is his ability to put ordinary people in extraordinary situations; how they cope, how they change, how they adapt. They're all too human - it could easily be you. At the end of the day, though, what we're presented with is a stonking great thriller that has you swiping till the last page. I hope we get to see more from Mr B!

As a big fan of the author, it's been a long time since we have had the chance to read a new book, but the wait has been worth it, I wasn't disappointed. Harry Manning is determined to expose the truth over the death of his son Freddie at a party. It's not long before this story takes a dark route.

I was quickly pulled into this story. The pace was steady and the tension built throughout. The emotion is raw. The characters were true to life and well-developed. There's lots going on in this book. I hope we don't have to wait another five years for the next book from the fabulous Tom Bale.

Deadly Games is a masterclass in psychological suspense, where grief, vengeance, and buried secrets collide in a chilling narrative that grips from the first page. Tom Bale delivers a taut, emotionally charged thriller that explores the devastating aftermath of a tragedy—and the lengths a father will go to uncover the truth.

Harry Manning is a man broken by loss, but not defeated. When his son Freddie dies in what the courts call a tragic accident, Harry is convinced it was something far more sinister. His pursuit of justice leads him to Nathan Webb, and unexpectedly, to Nathan’s wife, Erin—a woman with her own scars and reasons to help. Together, they navigate a dangerous path, unraveling a web of lies that someone is desperate to keep hidden.

Bale’s prose is crisp and evocative, his pacing relentless. The story pulses with tension, but it’s the emotional depth that truly elevates it. Themes of guilt, manipulation, and redemption are woven seamlessly into a plot that never lets up.

Perfect for fans of Harlan Coben and Simon Kernick, Deadly Games is not just a thriller—it’s a haunting exploration of how far we’ll go for those we love, and what happens when the truth is darker than we imagined.

With thanks to Tom Bale, the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.

So have you ever felt you were slipping into a book rut I’ve been feeling like that as of late or like I’m running out of words or something I dunno I just have been in a slump for sure.

This was a really good read and it helped me to get out of that slump well least with books. Harry gosh did I feel for him. He lost his son and he was just trying to find his way my heart broke for him. Truly did. Couldn’t even imagine but he knows Nathan Webb is responsible he just does but he wasn’t convicted or anything they said was an accident. His son fell through the floor at one of his buildings and died. Well Harry is now on a mission to find out what really happened. I found jt so cool that Erin she was Nathan’s wife. He was mean to her abusive and now she is gonna team up with harry to bring down Nathan. I loved this book. So so much. It had so much in it twists turns so much I didn’t know what to think or where it was gonna go. I really don’t. All I know is I need more by this author asap cause so so good. His writing is just so different and so good!!! I am in love !!! Yall beee this book.

Deadly Games by Tom Bale was a very emotion thriller. Once I started to read this I was hooked and I liked the way the author Tom Bale writes, everything flowed and he had a great way of bringing you into his latest book especially as it was beautifully written from start to finish. When grieving father Harry Manning losses his son Freddie to a tragic party accident and it wasn't just a fall!. Now, the court's have ruled it as a tragic accident. But, Harry is determined to find out what really happened on the night Freddie died and he is certain that Nathan Webb is responsible for Freddie's death, and he will do anything to prove it.

Harry is now seeking revenge, and he finds an unlikely ally, Nathan’s wife, Erin. Nobody knows better than Erin Webb. . . . . . just how violent Nathan can be, but with her own private torment compels her to help Harry. Even when it means putting both their lives on the line.

WoW. . . . . Now, together, can they uncover the truth behind that deadly game that cost Freddie's life?

But, it is a truth someone will kill to keep buried!! 🩸

WoW this book was excellent and I ended up reading it in 2 sittings. I loved it

His son is dead and he is out for revenge!

Harry Manning's son Freddie was murdered. The court has ruled his death a misadventure and has let Nathan Webb, the accused, walk free. But in his heart Harry knows that Webb is responsible for Freddie's death and nothing will stop his from finding out the truth and avenging his son.

Harry is a man of conviction and he knows what he has to do to get the answers he seeks. Though he is mourning his son he is also dealing with his wife leaving him. I liked his character so much. He is in pain, he is grieving but through all that he seeks the truth. Nathan's character is despicable and easy to hate and I like that in a character. Erin Webb was also a great character. It is always important to pay attention to the people who are around cruel men like Nathan. They are always possible victims too. Great read!

Thank you Netgalley and Boldwood Books for this eARC. All opinions are entirely my own.

Deadly Games by Tom Bale is a gripping, emotionally charged thriller that hooked me from the first chapter. It poses a haunting question- how far would a father go to avenge his son’s death, even if it means partnering up with an unlikely ally.

Some scenes, especially those involving domestic violence, were tough to read but handled with care and realism. They gave the story real emotional weight without feeling exploitative.

I really connected with Harry- his grief and determination felt raw and genuine. Erin was another standout: strong, flawed, and deeply human despite her own problems. And Nathan… let’s just say Bale succeeded in making him easy to hate.

The pacing stays sharp throughout, but what sets this book apart is its heart. Beneath the suspense and revenge is a story about morality, loyalty, and what it costs to seek justice.

Harry Manning’s son, Freddie, died after falling from the roof of a building where he was partying with his friends. The courts rule that Freddie’s death was an accident, but Harry doesn’t believe it and sets out to get the person he thinks is responsible: Nathan Webb, the owner of the building from which Freddie fell.

Harry meets Erin, Nathan Webb’s wife, and they form a friendship, sharing a determination to get justice for Freddie. Erin knows just how violent her husband can be and is putting her life on the line helping Harry.

A brilliantly written, gripping read with lots of twists and turns.

I’ve heard the term ‘Edge of your seat’, but for me, this was addictively ‘On Edge’ wherever you choose to read this!
It was exceptional, an excruciatingly brilliant piece of thrilling fiction that had my nerves shredded.
Tense, with an overwhelming sense of atmospheric urgency that gripped me by the throat and refused to let go until the utterly incredible finale.
One of the finest, yet chilling books I have read this year and a memorable story that saw me scream into the pages with terror, begging certain characters to run….Just run!
Honestly, a book that is simply a ‘MUST’ if you are a fan of perfectly crafted, relentless thrillers.
10/10 from me.

I've read a few thrillers where, by accident or design, an escapism game turns deadly. Deadly Games is one of the best uses of this plotline. When his son dies while playing the game, Harry Manning will not accept the coroner's verdict. His son was murdered, and he's going to find the evidence to put Nathan Webb in prison, where he belongs. Each chapter pushed the tension a little higher until I was holding my breath while turning pages. When Webb's wife joins Harry's investigation, it adds several twists to an already fast-paced hunt. I've not read any of Bale's back titles so I now I have to go see what I need to add to my list.

This is an utterly gripping murder investigation! Don't expect the usual police team, nor your typical murderer! In this novel, Harry the father of a teenaged son died in an unexplainable way. Harry wants revenge ... His aim will take many forms and will lead him to unexpected problems..... I was immersed in this story from page one not knowing what to expect from Harry thanks to a very well structured plot and well drawn characters. A great thriller!
I received a digital copy of this novel from NetGalley and I have voluntarily written an honest review.

This was my first Tom Bale novel and won't be my last. I really enjoyed the storyline, the search for the truth and the risks taken to get it.

I really admired the characters of Erin and Harry. They were such strong, determined characters. I have to applaud Harry's tenacity in trying to find the truth about how his son died. Erin went through so much and still managed to find the strength to stand up to the Nathan.

This was slow burn, but ultimately a good read.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Deadly Games is a domestic thriller filled with suspense, moral dilemmas, manipulation and a quest for justice. What more could you want?!

I found Tom Bale skillfully and sensitively explored the themes of coercion, control, manipulation, abuse and revenge, resulting in a tense and emotive read. This book will have you experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions and leave you wondering just how far you would go to protect the people that you love. I was gripped from start to finish! This was the first book I’ve read by Tom Bale, but I’ll certainly be reading more!
