Calder Saga #9

Lone Calder Star

Rate this book
New York Times bestselling author Janet Dailey journeys to the Lone Star state and the Cee Bar Ranch, where the Calders face a new threat to their land and way of life.

Quint Echohawk is a lawman, not a rancher, but he's a Calder through and through. And when someone sets out to undermine the Calders' Texas outfit, it's time for him to step in and investigate.

From the moment Quint's boots touch Texas dirt, it's clear that everyone in town is running scared from Max Rutledge, the ruthless owner of a competing ranch. Posing as a cowboy looking for work, Quint has no one to trust but "Empty" Garner and his granddaughter, Dallas. In Empty, Quint finds a steadfast ally; in Dallas, Quint finds something more--the promise of a future.

In a town where betrayal lies around every corner, where every unlocked door, thrown punch, or suspicious fire is just a hint of deadlier things to come, the Calders will be tested as never before. And this time, it could cost them more than their land. . .it could cost them everything.

Very good read talks about the ranch and cattle and romancces on the ranch and the marriages there. It also follows young ex-lawman Quint Echohawk (a grandson of the series' original protagonist, Chase Calder) on an undercover mission from the family's Montana homeground to Texas, where the rival Rutledge millionaire clan is attempting a hostile takeover of neighboring ranches, including the Calders' sole Lone Star state ranch, the Cee Bar. With virtually the entire town intimidated or bribed into conspiring in the Rutledges' ruthless dealings, loner Quint faces perils ranging from fire to starvation to anthrax, with no allies save two small, out-of-business ranchers: crusty old-timer ""Empty"" Gardner and his grandaughter, Dallas. Characterizations are somewhat less complex

Started reading this series in the 80's. I think the last one was published just a couple of years ago. I've enjoyed them all, especially the early ones set in the old west. The newer one's are contemporary. It follows a large ranch owning family through the generations.

This book was all about Quint ,another of the Calder offsprings. It was interesting reading, however nothing exciting as a matter of fact kinda boring. I have another that I purchased and I sincerely hope that the next one is more exciting. I would recommend only if someone has read the previous books and are curious.

I did like the attitude he developed proving that he was a product of his father and leaving the Calder homestead.

Lone Calder Star is a fascinating story. It brings to life how people lived and survived in simpler times. Ms.Dailey writes about the tough men who built America and the passions that drove them. Loved it. Reviewed by Heide Katros, Winter , Florida

This series just gets better with each story. I will definitely read the series again. I love to read books that cover multi-generational characters.

I really liked the story but I could have used a little more romance... (for someone who cut her Romance babyteeth on the likes of J.R. Ward and Sherrilyn Kenyon, mere 'intense' kisses and allusions to a night full of 'passionate lovemaking' just do not fill the bill.... if you know what I'm saying. And I think you do....;-)

I'm smitten with all things cowboy and western these days so it was right up my alley.
I have heard things (good and bad) about Janet Dailey, but I thoroughly enjoyed this quick read.
I was engaged from the start and developed (positive and negative) emotional attachments to all the main characters - always an excellent sign.

I normally would never start a series at the end (almost, there is one more right after this one) I have am almost pathological need to start all stories from the beginning. But as I was unsure of the commitment I wanted to give this series, I started with the most up to date story I could find. But, everything about this story made me want to go back to the beginning and learn about the Calder Family from the very beginning.

My only dilemma now is to decide whether to go ahead and read the latest book, or jump back to the beginning.... decisions decisions.

The Cee Bar ranch in Texas has been run by the Calders for over 100 years. So when the Calders are having difficulty keeping foremen to run the ranch, Quint is sent to investigate. Quint pretends to be a simple cowboy and as soon as he hits town everyone is warning him off the Cee Bar.

Max Rutledge and his grandson, Boone are wanting to buy the ranch at any cost. Quint be-friends "Empty" Garner and his granddaughter Dallas. Things turn very ugly and there is a suspicious fire and anthrax.

The very best thing about this book is that no one dies. YIPPEE!! Dallas seemed to me to be not as headstrong as any of the other Calder women as evidenced by the fact of her relationship with Rutledge. An okay romance.

This story had a good plot with plenty of action that moved right along but I didn't like how it dealt with the issue of trust and the bad guys got away with so much. It's hard to explain further without spoiling it but it just should have been stronger. Quint is sent to fix problems with family ranch and is attracted to waitress Dallas at local cafe.

Got this out of lib be there were multiple copies and takes place in the west, farm, Cowboys, etc. the story was fine, but very predictable. The love scenes were like something out of a harlequin romance, I did not enjoy that at all. Would not rec to others and will not be reading any more in series.

This is a quick read romance. I picked it up because years ago I was reading the Calder saga, that Janet Dailey has put together. I like the way she puts her characters into a situation and solves the problem.

Lone Star Calder was the first book I read in the Calder series, and actually, the first book I'd read by Janet Dailey. This book made me a fan of the series and her writing.

I highly recommend it.

Didn't know this book was one in a series. Light book with not much going on. I should have known it was a fluff book by the pic on the convert but mine was covered with sales stickers I couldn't tell. No desire to pick up the rest of the Calder ranch series

There's trouble on the Calder's Cee Bar Ranch in Texas. Hired hands leave after a day or two and the last foreman ran off without letting anyone know he was going, leaving the stock to starve. Quint Echohawk heads to the ranch to see what's going on.
