He studied law in Toronto at Osgoode Hall, formally becoming a lawyer in 1954. Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario awarded him an honorary Doctor of Letters degree in 1990.
The Outside Chance of Maximilian Glick was a 1988 film based on his 1982 novel.
Torgov is the father of former actress and current artist Sarah Torgov who appeared in the movies Meatballs and American Gothic among others.

What a delightful book! Inspector Hermann Preiss is well-known in the musical circles of Dusseldorf, rubbing elbows with Robert and Clara Schumann, Franz Liszt, and the up and coming Johannes Brahms. He and his lady friend, a cellist performing with Clara Schumann at a debut of some of their works, are witness to the distress of Robert Schumann over the tuning of one of the pianos. Hermann is asked to investigate. The result is an insider's view of the musical world of Germany in the 1850s. Hermann is witty, funny, and "perhaps" not entirely scrupulous in his investigations. I have already purchased the next book, and looking forward to more of this mystery series.

When we read about a famous person we often don't pay attention to the other people around at the same time. In this first mystery Morley Torgov manages to bring together both Schumanns, Clara's father, Johannes Brahms, and Franz Liszt. The thought of all those musicians in one room is overwhelming, but when you add in Robert's hearing problem and fears and a request for police investigation things become interesting. I'm not sure how I feel about the author's solution to the murder that happens about half way through the book. The murder is fictional but the suspects aren't so saddling one with that guilt is perhaps unwise. I liked the introduction of the piano technician, especially as I have been hearing lately about the importance of regular tuning and the fragility of the result.

This was an entertaining mystery to listen to, not so much due to the mystery, but due to Düsseldorf’s top detective, Inspector Hermann Preiss. Inspector Preiss gets called to the Schumann residence, and is commissioned to solve an unusual mystery. So, Inspector Preiss gets to snoop around the musical world of Germany in the 1850s, meeting such illustrious people as Robert and Clara Schumann, Franz Liszt and Johannes Brahms, and their associates. Torgov manages to write full-blooded characters. I found the ending to be rather surprising. A light, but not so fluffy historical mystery, though it would probably help if you knew who the composers were.
The narrator (Christopher Hirsh) reads the whole thing with a faint German accent. I wasn't sure what to make of that... but then decided what else was a German Inspector supposed to sound like when telling his story to an English audience?

Η αφήγηση χωρίζεται σε κεφάλαια και είναι πρωτοπρόσωπη-αφηγητής ο επιθεωρητής Πρέις. Η αφήγηση διακόπτετια από ζωντανούς διαλόγους που αναδεικνύουν τον ψυχισμό των ηρώων και οι περιγραφές των ηρώων και της εποχής είναι προσεγμένη και ζωντανεύει την εποχή.

Meutre en La Mujeur est un one-shot policier très prenant. J’avais besoin d’enquêtes, de crimes, d’indices semées et de fausse piste. J’ai été servie !
On dévore cette intrigue qui se déroule en pleine Allemagne du XIXème siècle, parmi les compositeurs de talent. On y croise les pointures de la musique classique (Listz, Brahms…). J’ai aimée cette plongée dans l’univers musicale, et même si vous n’avez pas de connaissance dans le solfège par exemple, cela n’entache rien la fluidité de votre lecture. Nous suivons l’inspecteur Hermann Preiss de la police de Düsseldorf qui tente de résoudre le mystère d’un meurtre en lien avec une des figure emblématique de la musique classique. Un roman sympathique qui ravira surtout les mélomanes !

Leger, surtout au niveau de l’enquête qui n’en est pratiquement pas une. L’intérêt réside dans la présence des Schumann, Brahms, Liszt en Allemagne du 19e. Toit de même agréable.

Found this a fun read....takes place in 1850's and involves such famous musicians as Brahms and Liszt giving us a different insight into these people. Also involves the beginning of treating mental illness as an illness. There are also many lines that made me chuckle....a very light read but some very interesting insights.

Too lazy to write anything other than if you're a classical music lover, READ THIS NOW. And even if you're not, it's a great book!
