Very informative book about the brief history of "race records," from the mid-20's to mid-40's. Details about production, record labels, research, recording and artists. Essential for anyone interested in the history of American (& African-American) music.
In this book, Dixon and Godrich converted their seminal 900-page discography of early blues and gospel into a 100-page narrative. You will like this book exactly as much as you think you will.
This is a brief history of the first 35 years of blues recording. It's a little dry, but informative and worth reading if you are interested in early blues.
Interesting to see the contrast in how the sale of music has changed from when they first started recording until now. Have to try and locate some of these old "race records."
