How a Little Becomes a Lot: The Art of Small Changes for a More Meaningful Life – A Guide to Lasting Transformation Through Behavioral Science and Wisdom

Rate this book
Atomic Habits meets Think Like a Monk in this profound guide to lasting change from behavior coach and host of the hit podcast The One You Feed. Weaving together behavioral science with timeless wisdom, Eric Zimmer reveals how to stop fighting yourself and start moving forward.

More than 30 years ago, Eric Zimmer faced a life-altering battle with heroin addiction that left him homeless and facing prison--a turning point that sparked his search to understand how profound change happens, and how we can chart sustainable paths forward while honoring both who we are and who we hope to become.

How a Little Becomes a Lot starts with a radical your mind has a mind of its own. Each day, it pulls you in countless directions—toward what you value most, what you desire now, away from what you fear, and toward what feels comfortable. Real, lasting change happens when you stop trying to strong-arm this complexity and instead learn to work with it, one small choice at a time.

Zimmer's motto is little by little, a little becomes a lot. Personal transformation isn't about superhuman willpower or heroic feats of character. It's not a watershed or an epiphany; it's the result of the little decisions to do A instead of B, to say yes instead of no. These tiny shifts create powerful momentum.

Drawing on sources from Zen Buddhism to modern psychology, Zimmer offers practical wisdom you can use

A path to align your daily actions with your core valuesTools that quiet self-criticism and build the kind of self-compassion that actually worksSmall, achievable practices that create momentum when you feel stuckWays to find balance in a world that pushes extremesThese “Wise Habits” blend outer behaviors that improve health and well-being with inner attitudes that bring more peace and clarity to everyday life.

Whether you’re feeling stuck, trying to change a specific habit, or seeking a more fulfilling life, How a Little Becomes a Lot will work for you. And by the end, that won’t feel little at all.

I’ve been waiting for years for Eric Zimmer to write a book - excited it’s finally here!! I’ve been a longtime follower of his podcast The One You Feed and then took his Spiritual Habits course early in the pandemic. The tools I learned from Eric have helped me navigate some very difficult life events - my mom’s death, my dad’s hospitalization and unplanned move to assisted living, major work changes and moving.

To have all his lessons in one place is a true gift! Eric has a way of communicating that is truly extraordinary. He’s pragmatic without being too “self-helpy” and spiritual without being too “woo woo”. The concepts he presents are tangible.

“Who do I want to be in this moment?”, perspective, looking for the middle way - tools for living that have saved me on many occasions.

He provides hope that it’s possible to have a rich life no matter what’s going on around and inside us. He shares openly from his own experience as a former addict, demonstrating that real change - little by little - and with kindness towards ourselves are the foundation of moving towards deeper happiness. He brings thoughtfulness and humor - yea Calvin and Hobbes!

Love Eric, love this book! So grateful he’s sharing his experience and wisdom with the world. Bought several copies to share with my book group and other friends.

How a little becomes a lot has been the mantra of my life. My hubby and I have lived a very wonderful life with hardly any money. We find a way to do the things we love on a little. The author talks about creating good habits that can make your life better. Part of having a great life is making good choices that propel you forward.

TL/DR: I truly enjoyed this book. If you’ve ever felt stuck or unsure of yourself, this is the kind of book that meets you where you are and gently pushes you forward.

Longer Version: From the very first pages of his introduction, I felt like this book was written specifically for me. I lost count of the number of times I closed my eyes and nodded in agreement or put my hand on my heart because the similarities of shared emotion with the author were uncanny, despite how incredibly different our stories are.

The author’s tone spoke in a way that made me feel seen as an individual, understood as a human who desires more out of life, and genuinely encouraged (not just motivated) to understand more about myself, exactly as I am. I’ve been in a place where I’m still trying to figure out who that is and staying consistent with myself has always been a struggle because I put such a heavy emphasis on being consistent for everyone/everything else in my life (career, motherhood, partner) that I often don’t make time for myself or when I do, I feel guilty about it.

The author breaks down the idea that consistent changes can shape who we become over time and while this concept isn’t new, his approach to personalized implementation was (at least, to me.) Instead of overwhelming his audience with big, drastic transformations, he does a fantastic job at focusing on simple shifts that actually feel doable (and are easily implemented into daily life, even when motivation has run out.) It helped me see that growth doesn’t have to be perfect or immediate to matter.

It’s like Gabor Mate’s ‘In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts’ meets James Clear’s ‘Atomic Habits’ mixed with a little of Eckhart Tolle’s ‘The Power of Now’ and a dash of Mel Robbins’s ‘The Let Them Theory’… yet its genius is still one of a kind in its own right. I couldn’t recommend it more and I plan to read it again down the road, perhaps more than once. 10/10

I appreciated the overall message of this self help book, I think it’s a nice and scientifically backed up sentiment that is to understand and most of already live with this sort of mentality, even if we don’t realise it (in both good and bad ways. Life has a way of adding things up and then culminating at a choke point)

Honestly, I was a skeptic when I opened this book. “The information about how to change behavior is everywhere!” But as I read, a couple things happened. One, I realized that I struggle more with changing habits than I had admitted to myself. And two, I started to open up to “new”, simple approaches than I had before. I attribute this entirely to the author, Eric Zimmer, who has this magical kind of humility that makes it possible to see yourself differently, with gentleness and humor, and consider your own life through a lens that is both honest and compassionate and then bring a positive energy to move forward differently. I am delighted to recommend this book to anyone who has ever found themselves imagining making a more healthy or positive choice, but found themselves sliding back into the couch, bed, pizza box, or social media app…

I listen to this guy's podcast, The One You Feed, and really enjoy it. I thought the book would be a recast of his podcast! It isn't. Zimmer puts together all that he has synthesized from his life --- including his recovery from addiction to what he has internalized from numerous interviews with some of the brightest minds of our time. Excellent strategies from a man who lives what it means to make meaningful changes in life. Love this book and appreciate Eric Zimmer on a whole new level.
