Black Coffee and Ice Water, Patton Oswalt's 10th hour of brand-new material, marks an exciting new chapter in Audible's foray into the world of stand-up. The Emmy- and Grammy-winning performer wrestles with religion, wolves, parenting a teenager, and musical theater. He mostly loses.
Listened to it as part of an audible plus subscription. I would not buy this as an audiobook…: why o why do people have to use such foul language in order to be funny? I guess that’s how most people talk these days? I reject it
4.5 stars For some reason, Patton Oswalt released his latest comedy special as an Audible audiobook.
It’s not really a book. It’s Patton’s latest hour of stand-up.
I probably would have enjoyed a typical comedy special on Netflix or HBO better, but this was fine. I liked it.
(It also added one more short “book” to my stupid 2025 reading goal.) --- Apropos of nothing, I’d love to see Patton write another real book.
(“Zombie Spaceship Wasteland” and “Silver Screen Fiend” are both wonderful.)
I follow his writing profile on Amazon. They send me an email every couple of months, saying he’s written another comic book. Every time I get one of those emails, I think for a second, “Ooooooo! Does Patton have a new book?!” It’s quickly followed by disappointment when I see it’s another comic book. Sorry, I’m just not a comic book guy.
I LOVE stand up. I LIKE Patton Oswalt. I took a chance with this one and I did the worst thing ever. I listened to this when I was in bed and my husband was asleep. It started with a snort here and a giggle there and then it was a full belly laugh. He woke up wondering if I was laughing in my sleep. After I told him I was listing to this one, he was like, "keep it down!" I laughed, I cried and I had an asthma attack. This was too good to not listen to twice! I felt like I had a hangover when I woke up the next morning. WORTH IT!
Super, super quick listen, free with Audible subscription but I had no idea this was a standup comedy routine. I thought it was a biography or something. It's amusing and I like Patton, but not sure this counts as a "book" per se (listening to a stand up comedy bit).
Does this count as a book? It’s an hour-long Audible recording. Anyway, I enjoyed it! Come on Patton! I saw him at a live recording of the podcast “Lovett or Leave It” and he was incredible: fast, fun, and funny. I was happy to stumble across this recording too!
Well produced, fun listen. If you enjoy any of Patton's other works... Or if you just need a break from the crazy that is this reality of late, This is the audiobook comedy special for you.
