The Breath Reset Plan: A practical guide to restoring your health and feeling fantastic with breathwork

The Breath Reset Plan uses science-based methods to repattern your nervous system. Shift more fluidly to whatever state your day is asking for – whether it’s focus, calm, energy or recovery – and manage stress like you never have before.

Your breath has been training your body and mind all along, but not always in your favour. Through changes in chemistry, rhythm and the ongoing conversation between body and mind, your breathing shapes the state you’re in when your brain stores and recalls experience. Because learning is tied to those states, old patterns keep resurfacing – until you retrain them.

The Breath Reset Plan gives you the tools to do exactly that. You’ll learn how to update those patterns and reshape the way life lands inside you. Challenges will always be part of being human, but by harnessing breath, you’ll be able to meet stress at its root, working with the very signals your body uses to shape perception and response.

Grounded in behavioural repatterning and explored through five key pillars – Awareness, Connection, Sleep, Gut and Movement – this plan will teach you how to make your breath the lever for presence, resilience and navigating the full spectrum of life with steadiness and joy.

“Breath is the fastest way to change the conversation between your body and your mind.”

This is one of those books that gently taps you on the shoulder and goes, hey… you know you’re breathing wrong, right? And then somehow manages to say it without being smug or woo-woo about it. As someone who’s always been curious about breathwork, this felt like the kind of book I’d been waiting for, approachable, grounded, and actually useful.

The Breath Reset Plan is refreshingly practical. Brooke Elliston doesn’t just tell you that breathwork will change your life, she explains why your nervous system is stuck in fight or flight half the time and how your breath has been quietly reinforcing that pattern for years. It’s science based, but in a way that actually makes sense, even when your brain is fried.

What I loved most is how doable it feels. This isn’t “wake up at 5am and breathe on a mountain” energy. It’s more, here’s how to use your breath when you’re anxious, exhausted, wired, can’t sleep, overwhelmed, or all of the above. The focus on shifting between states, calm, focus, energy, recovery, feels incredibly relevant to real life, not an idealised wellness version of it.

The five pillars (Awareness, Connection, Sleep, Gut, Movement) give the book structure without it feeling rigid. It reads like someone who genuinely understands stress wrote it, not someone yelling “just relax” from a yoga mat.

Overall, this is one of those books that makes you feel calmer simply by reading it, then quietly equips you with tools you’ll actually use. No drama. No pressure. Just a reminder that your breath has been with you this whole time… and it might be the easiest reset button you own.

My Highest Recommendation!

Congratulations Brooke!

3.5 stars. This book has some really interesting and helpful information in it, but I found it difficult to plough through sometimes and, consequently, it's taken me ages to finish it. The writing style is akin to a university paper crossed with a novel, and doesn't allow for the reduction in mental focus of those suffering from stress or burnout. I had to read countless passages multiple times to try and understand what was being said. Some bits I gave up on. I know the author was a lawyer and is obviously a very intelligent women who is passionate and learned about the subject matter, but this book could've been so much more accessible if the language was dialled back just a smidge. I might revisit it when I'm further down my healing path.

I really enjoyed The Breath Reset Plan by Brooke Elliston and found it genuinely fascinating. What stood out to me straight away was how beautifully Brooke integrates the science behind breathwork without making the book feel heavy or clinical. You absolutely know it’s grounded in solid research, but it never reads like a textbook or a scientific journal.

Instead, it feels accessible, practical and relatable. The explanations make sense, and the exercises are simple enough to implement in everyday life without feeling overwhelmed. I appreciated that this isn’t presented as something “woo-woo” or abstract. It’s clear, evidence-based and thoughtfully explained in a way that makes you understand why it works.

The five pillars – Awareness, Connection, Sleep, Gut and Movement – give the book a strong framework, and I found myself reflecting on how interconnected all of these areas really are. The breathing practices themselves are easy to follow, and I genuinely feel that if I continue applying them consistently, I’ll see real benefits.

This is a practical, science-backed guide that feels empowering rather than complicated. If you’re interested in stress regulation, nervous system health, or simply learning how to feel more steady and present in your day-to-day life, this is well worth reading.

Thank you to S&S Readers Departmentfor the advanced copy of this book!

As an anxious gal I found this super helpful with some great strategies I want to work on implementing into my daily routines. As I've also been trying to manage an IBS diagnosis I found the chapter on the gut-brain connection especially interesting and really valuable.

The writing style makes this an easy read even with limited prior knowledge on the topic, and I felt it was very readable- it felt like receiving advice from a friend, which I love in a non fiction book!

This took me a while to read for two reasons. One, because I’ve been doing a lot of PhD work and reading something like this feels just a bit too similar and two, the book is about slowing right down and not rushing things!

This is easily digestible with practical strategies throughout. I read a book on breathing last year which fascinated me. This felt a bit more practical but it was still well referenced throughout. My only issue with it is that I think I would find it hard to do a lot of the things she suggests without actually learning from someone in person. Who knows if I’d be doing the activities correctly! If you’re someone who can learn to do practical things from a book then it’ll probably work well for you. Now to try to implement the Plan and hope for the benefits the author describes!

The Breath Reset Plan is a book that slows you down before you realise it. I opened it in full rush mode and eventually landed in its core message… unlearning the instinct to hurry, override, and breathe in big gulpy movements that don’t actually serve. When you’re feeling stuck or ruminating and ALL the things. There’s a lot to learn here, with far more than simple breathing ideas at the centre.

It reframes breath as part of emotion, not something that happens after it. The more you notice your breath, the more you notice yourself. It also asks sharp questions about identity, what’s truly you and what’s a survival strategy, and the case studies make that feel very human.

A striking section on those who can explain their psychology but can’t feel their bodies, analysing instead of noticing. It’s a gentle but accurate mirror.

Healing here is about returning to self‑recognition and looking deeply into all parts of yourself. There is so much to learn, with excellent referencing (I sound like I am at work!). This has been a labour of love, such care, devotion and personal reflection has been poured into this.

I really enjoyed taking my time with it (sorry Brooke for my confusing messages that I couldn’t ‘get it’, but your slow‑vibe take was exactly what I needed).

With big thanks to @affirmpress and @simonschusterau for my copy 🩵🤍
