Grim's Delight: The New Protectorate Syndicate: Book One

Rate this book
A bloody war nears its end.

Felix Amauri is the rightful heir to the most powerful vampire crime family on the continent. After years of taking out challengers to his claim, everything he’s fought for is finally within reach — until one sloppy assassination threatens to ruin everything.

To be human is to be prey.

For years, the worst thing Dahlia McKnight could picture was becoming a vampire’s toy. She never imagined that she’d witness a brutal assassination, let alone that she’d be turned in the process. One day she’s a waitress, the next she’s the sole heir to a vicious crime family embroiled in a war of succession and the target of an icy vampire prepared to do anything to take what he’s owed.

He needs her for more than just her blood.

Learning to be a vampire is hard enough, but when it’s discovered that she can carry another vampire’s offspring, nothing will stop Felix from claiming her. If she wants to be more than just his plaything, it’ll mean becoming the predator she was born to be.

5 Delectable ✨'s

This vampire mafia romance was everything and more! The FMC, Dahlia, was so kickass and whipsmart, I loved how she was vulnerable but so strong considering everything that played out. Our vampire MMC, Felix, was completely smitten and it was so hot how devoted and obsessed he was with his bride. The two had so much chemistry and obvious affection for each other despite their rocky start. Not to mention all the undeniable yearning and pining that resulted in so many delicious intimate moments. The two were completely feral for each other and it was just so sexy.

Abigail packed SO MUCH JUICY STORY into this one. He's feral for her. She's having none of his nonsense. She's crashing out SO HARD and he's actually a caring, supportive, and downright adorable vampire syndicate leader. Who knew?

If all morally gray heroes were written like Abigail's I would be devouring the genre. I adore how much Felix not only worships Dahlia, but also values her as an individual, not just as a "prize" for finally getting what he wanted. Also, the banter is Grade A, top notch. I just want to marinate in these stories forever.

I liked Dahlia so much which is why I read this. But she deserved better than Felix who couldn't even apologize for causing her hurt but blamed her for not telling him. What a schmuck!

I wanted more time between Dahlia and Alastair.

Felix wasn't it for me and I'm disappointed with his character and character development.

Thank you to Abigail Kelly for the ARC!

Trigger or content warning? Yes, included in the back of the book.

Details?
Dahlia is the FMC. Felix is the MMC. I don’t recall their ages being mentioned outright, but I believe Dahlia is late twenties to early thirties.
On page OM who is interested in Dahlia, he is her boss and she has no interest in him.
Felix has not been with anyone since meeting Dahlia 3 years ago. I do not think Dahlia has been with anyone either.

Bits-and-bobs? Miscommunication can happen to mob bosses too.

My thoughts?
I blasted through this book. It adds to the universe Abigail Kelly has been carefully crafting for all of her books of the NPU. This addition focused on the bases of vampires, and Felix's family.

Dahlia and Felix are a hoot together.
Dahlia doesn’t take shit from anyone, raised in a rough-around-the-edges home hardened her to the world before she knew it could be soft. Her best friend Cecilia is the exact opposite. Soft might as well be Cecilia’s middle name.
On what should have been a typical work evening for Dahlia..everything goes sideways. I found it delightful that I didn’t know how her turn was going to happen. I knew it was coming, but I wasn’t sure *how* it would happen. Needless to say, I was shocked.
Dahlia does not have an easy turn into being a vampire, and Cecilia is along for the ride from the beginning to the conclusion they come to at the hospital. Screw the fact that it is a traumatizing experience overall, the doctors and nurses and overjoyed to have someone there that is so *rare*. It really felt like they failed Dahlia in explaining to her what was going on with her body, and what it meant to be venom neutral.
Felix was a complex character for me to wrap my head around, because he could be so sweet, but then have the instincts (or thoughts) of a brick wall. I found that Grim's Delight highlighted how being the absolute focus of a vampire's world doesn't mean they're going to come with emotional intelligence to how *you* may feel about that. Especially Felix, who is not used to having his opinions challenged. Dahlia's apart of a small group of people who can actually question him, and challenge what he has said. I was glad he admitted to himself at the end that Milo was right. Also the cut off scene where we don't get to find out how kinky Milo is felt like a crime.
I would say Dahlia adapted to becoming a vampire way better than I would have in her position. That being said, it was not a graceful transition for her. She spent it injured, sick, and confused to what was going on with her. Then she gets gently kidnapped by Felix, and is held prisoner-not-prisioner at his home (there was definitely some dark romance vibes going on).
I felt the story pacing was solid, and I really love the world building we got in this addition to A.B's universe.

If you've read any of Abigail's NP Series, you know that her male leads are absolutely to die for and Felix does not disappoint! He's obsessed with Dahlia in the sweetest most unhinged way and I'm totally here for it. If you're not afraid of some light stalking and some consensual hot vampire bites, this one is for you.

Highlights:
- Felix who wasn't your typical broody and dark male lead, but a softie for Dahlia and his family underneath his tough mafia exterior
- Dahlia who's so realistic considering her entire world was flipped upside down
- The female friendships! Absolutely loved that there was some solid sisterhood at play in the mafia world with Dahlia and Marietta!

I greatly appreciated the small easter eggs to Empire and Sanguine and absolutely love how Grim's Delight ties into the rest of the NP universe. Eagerly awaiting the next release!

cyber/real stalking - bad
kidnapping - bad
murder/organized crime - bad

but.... hear me out...

obsessed possessive vamp crime boss and stubbornly independent newly turned vamp bride - hot

this was such a fun return to this world! all of the characters are great and made me want side stories for all of them.

I really liked that Dahlia didn't just roll over and actually reacted emotionally to experiencing several shocking traumas at once.

Excellent

Lush, vivid storytelling that sucks the reader right away.  Some of the descriptions reminded me of film noir settings in the best of ways. Dahlia, the FMC, is smart and driven and works hard to achieve her goals. She has flirty banter with the MMC Felix via text. Felix is OBSESSED with Dahlia from the getgo. It's nuanced and emotional, yes, but he is always just down bad for her. Just 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻

"Felix wasn’t used to delayed gratification. He didn’t do self-restraint. When he saw something — or someone — he wanted, he took it. And he’d never wanted someone like he wanted Dahlia McKnight."

*Plot things* happen and voila! Dahlia enters the vampire world and has to navigate the ins and outs of that.  She has really good character development of just being so confident and vicious. I loved it so much.

"Let me be so, so clear: the day I let men decide what’s best for me is the day they put me in the fucking ground.” Like I need this in every book I read thank you 🥰

The romance between the two MCs was filled with some long distance pining then light kidnapping, snappy banter, and chemistry off the charts. And some spicy spice 🔥🔥🔥

I also loved the friendship and sisterhood between Dahlia and Cecilia. Constantly supporting and building eachother up and I hope to see Cecilia in a later book.  The other side characters jump off the pages without stealing the show or bogging down the plot... though I have to say future books with these characters would be quite compelling.

Overall,  I really enjoyed this book.  It was very well written with an engaging plot. I don't think its necessary to read any of the other New Protectorate books to get the worldbuilding, but they're also very good and recommend them as well. "Empire" and "Sanguine" might be the best bet for vampire woldbuilding.

I received an ARC of this book, and this is my honest opinion, etc.

Sadly, I didn’t enjoy this as much as I had expected.

One of my biggest pet peeves in a book is when the reader is introduced to the characters after a romantic connection has been made between them. Think friends to lovers and second chance romance.

The only time I’m able to enjoy it is when we get flashbacks into their meetcute or other moments where they fell in love. If I’m reading a romance novel, I actually want to watch my characters fall in love with each other. That’s the whole point for me. The building of the relationship, the soft moments where they realize they love that person, the human connection.

I’m not saying there isn’t romance here, I’m just really frustrated that I never got to be there with the characters when it started. Unfortunately, because of this the story fell flat for me. This at no fault to the author, I genuinely think she did a great job all things considered, the relationship just wasn’t to my personal taste. I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

(I’ve decided against leaving a rating because I genuinely think this is done well, it just wasn’t for me. Also, there are so little ratings for it at the time I’m writing this review I don’t want to leave a lower star rating just yet.)

Seeing this author get rec'd a lot and haven't read anything else by her before.
Mainly started with this because apparently the MMC was supposed to be obsessed and all-in to the FMC from the beginning. Yeah, he's all into stalking her, obsessively texting her and sending her gifts, but he's NOT pursuing her with "forever" in mind, he considers her a temporary thing. This is like toxic love bombing when this guy has no intentions of pursuing a longterm relationship.

I came to a screeching halt when we finally see his POV and thoughts and he is only obsessed with her until he can have his way with her for a while until he puts her aside for his blood bride. He literally refers to her as his prize that he's bookmarked to get back to when the war between vampire factions has been dealt with.

"He couldn't keep her. Not forever. Not even for a few months. But he'd take what he could before he was forced to send her away. He'd be taking a blood bride soon enough."

If i have loyalty to anyone, it’s to him. Because he is mine. I’m his bride. He’s my husband.

Easiest 5stars.

I was finally able to read and this book…this story…it locked me in a chokehold…a vampire who will literally set the world ablaze to bring her happiness and joy? Give me one.

I’m so happy we have a new sub-series in The New Protectorate universe and knowing that we are getting dark, morally grey but oh so alluring men? This knowledge is making me happy.

Flirting between Felix and Dahlia is just next level, his need to please her and make her wishes come true, and her wise understanding that she is responsible for his world, actions and more importantly for his family just an ideal combination for a great story.

I had this book in ARC version, but here we are…months after release and with physical copy.

3.5 Stars.

“It’s incredible that you believe repeating the same point six times means I’m going to start listening. Maybe you should try for a seventh, for science.”

Felix was a lot of things, but a liar wasn’t one of them. He was an upfront sort of monster.

It's been a minute since I've read an Abigail Kelly story in the New Protectorate universe.

The beginning of the story with Dahlia working in a club with the assassination attempt felt very 2010s mafia/underground/fantasy/billionaire storyline, which I liked.

No, the only thing Dahlia had ever responded to was power. True, raw power. And there was nothing more true or more raw than putting a gun in her hand and letting her decide what happened next.

“Marietta, let me be so, so clear: the day I let men decide what’s best for me is the day they put me in the fucking ground.”

I loved Dahlia's escape attempt as well as the realization at the train station and the sexy heart to heart with Felix before and after. I appreciated her grappling with the sudden change to her life and as she was initially, but for me until the end, I wasn't a fan of the trajectory her life took because she was just Felix's sort of elevated right hand man, without actually being the right hand man as that was what Milo was for.

“Yes,” she whispered, “but I want both.”

“Both of what?”

“The games and the lovey-dovey stuff.”

But after they sort of settle into this holding pattern of waiting to see what would happen with Alistair, there wasn't much of interest to me other than getting to the end of the story.

I don't usually rate in terms of spice stars but Dahlia+Felix were cute together but a ⅗ hot chilli peppers when it came to their sex scenes/the smut.

So, started off well enough, kept my overall interest but sadly it was wholly forgetful, like it didn't have one stand out moment where if someone asked me/mentioned something from the book I'd be like oh, that's Dahlia and Felix from such and such story.

Maybe I'll go back to read the other Protectorate stories, as for especially for the elemental characters, those were memorable.

In a bookish world filled with too many shadow daddies and predictable FMCs that don’t resonate it can be hard to get truly excited by a book. Enter Abigail Kelly & the NPU — these books are a breath of fresh air. Each book gives a new glimpse and perspective into the broader world and I cannot get enough.

This first expansion into the Syndicate world is cinematic, stylish and introduces a whole host of new characters I hope we get to see more of in subsequent books. It’s rare to have so many side characters make a lasting impression!

Do you like banter, tension and obsession? Then boy are Dahlia & Felix the couple for you. The humor in this book took me off guard — I was laughing out loud at their back & forth. The text exchanges brought a depth to their relationship that really put it over the top for me

- Female friendship (I want more Celeste & Marietta!)
- Vamp kiddos
- “his girl”
- Mafia men who care deeply
- Fully realized FMC
- Found (made?) families > everything

I highly recommend the whole NPU but if you’re looking for more vampires, pick up Empire and Sanguine if you haven’t already!

I received this as an ARC which did not impact my honest review.

I never hand out 5 stars to ARCs right away… but this one? It checked every single box for me:
Stalker vibes
Man completely obsessed
Mafia ties
Found family
Vampires 🩸
The writing was phenomenal — it gave big-name-author quality from page one. I was hooked instantly and completely connected with the story.
Our MMC has been secretly in love (and yes, stalking 👀) the FMC for three years, knowing his family obligations mean he can never truly have her. But then, in a twist of fate, she becomes exactly what he needs — and suddenly he can have his cake and eat it too.
There are a few small bumps along the way, but if you loved Lights Out and want that same obsessive, intense energy with a vampire and mafia twist, this one needs to be on your TBR.

Tell your loved ones not to bother you, make a playlist of only Luvcat songs, grab a blankie, and then tuck the hell in for this absolute heartbreaker. She is dark, she is lush, she is spicy, she is everything dark and sexy about the NPU universe. This book stole the crown and reigns supreme in my Abigail Kelly Ultimate Reading List (and that's a remarkable feat, considering it dethroned Consort's Glory). Not to mention Felix and Alistair (Arrows and Apologies) are locked in a book boyfriend battle in my mind. Whatever you're doing, add Grim's Delight to the top of your TBR immediately.

In all seriousness, I have been mega in love with Abigail Kelly's books for years now. She never fails to write incredible, swoon-worthy men and impeccable, role-model women. For a book to be truly extraordinary, I expect to be an emotional mess throughout. I want joy, I want sadness, I want the whole rollercoaster. Kelly consistently delivers. I'm a total sucker for a mafia romance- love a dark, broody man- and what we get was that and more. Felix is beautifully possessive and an absolute psycho, alpha-hole. Yet, he's a complete softy for the ones he loves. Dahlia is the perfect femme fatale, but also delicate and intelligent. She's got a lot of backbone and never once did I find her decision-making skills lacking. The two of them mesh together perfectly - it always feels natural and like something that grew over time. I adored every minute in this book.

Sincerely, the only thing criminal about this book is how criminally short it was. However, as the start of a new spin-off series, it packs an amazing punch just like Consort's. I would say a little bit of Abigail NPU knowledge would aid a completely new reader, at least to better understand all the different types of personalities, creatures, and a bit of the politics. However, it would not be a detriment to go in blind. Expect wit and charm out the wazoo, along with gut-wrenching, heart-clenching moments that are so indicative of the vibrant and lovely world Abigail Kelly has created.

I received an ARC copy of this book and this is my honest review.

So. Good!

I love everything Abigail Kelly writes so I was very excited to read this new, darker, 'spin off' from the New Protectorate. Set in the same universe, this book centres on a new set of characters, that have been cleverly breadcrumbed from previous books. All the characters have their own stories and place in the universe but are linked together through family, random or romantic ties - I am always trying to figure out who is going to end up with who...

If you like vampires, gangsters, ballsy heroines and a MMC that is the reddest flag of all, then this book is for you!

*I received an ARC copy of this book

*I would also recommend you check out Abigail's page/socials as she also is a talented artist and draws some amazing artwork of her characters!

Loved this book—5 stars!

The story follows Dahlia, a human who works at a vampire bar, where she met the MMC, Felix, three years ago. After an accident—boom!—she’s turned into a vampire herself. From there, things are pretty straightforward: he finds out and decides it’s the perfect opportunity to make her his… forever.

There’s some misunderstanding along the way, and Dahlia needs to get comfortable with who she is now. It was a sweet and really sexy story with a strong FMC who doesn’t let anyone boss her around and a possessive and protective MMC who would do anything for her.

The only complaint I have (weirdly, because I tend to think this author’s books are a little bit too long) is that I wished we had more from his POV from when they met and how he got obsessed. We get glimpses of their three-year relationship through snippets of their text conversations, but I needed more.

What to expect

No OW/OM drama — another vampire wants her, but she doesn’t and keeps him away. What bothered me a bit is that Felix had a plan to marry someone for duty; he even had a bedroom prepared and a list of possible brides. He didn’t want to, but he was willing to do it. She finds out and is angry, but it doesn’t become a real problem between them.

Neither of them are virgins. There are mentions of him being with others, but nothing is detailed in any way.

Possessive and protective MMC
Strong FMC
Dual POV
Spicy 🌶🌶 (2/5 chili peppers)

This fast-paced book was fun! Abigail’s stories are so unique - unique in tone, setting, characters. I feel like I get a new perspective in this fantasy world with every book. Her engaging storylines always keep me hooked from start to finish.

Felix and Dahlia were a great match for each other - both strong, opinionated, loyal, possessive. These characters were a like-calls-to-like situation, for sure. With their fast-burn romance, the injection of flashback text exchanges were helpful to fully flesh out their relationship.

ALSO — Colin was the perfect palette cleanser we all needed in the mafia-heavy cast of characters. What a sweetie. His scenes were a total breath of fresh air in this crazy mob family.

If you like vampires, the mafia, and fast-burn romances, you should give this a try.

So let me start by saying this book has a very different vibe than all the other Abigail Kelly books, but it is going into a new series so it makes sense!

this is the "darkest" NPU book in my opinion but it doesn't mean it isn't as good as the other ones, I could not put it down and flew through it!

Dahlia and Felix are perfect for each other and their interactions are top tier. I am looking forward to all the other books to come in this new series.

I was so pleasantly surprised by how the plot came together in this one. I'm too excited about this one and would give away spoilers to go into more detail so I highly recommend reading to find out all about it 👀

I was given an ARC which did not impact my review.

This was another fun read but with a much more light hearted and comical undertone than her other books. H was incredibly overbearing and possessive, but h was so fiery and combative and the setting so ridiculous that this felt more like a rom com than a dark romance. Overall, I loved reading the banter and dynamics between these two phsycos.

Plot:
- in a previous book, h meets H when he shows up at the vampire bar she's a waitress at
- since then, they've been texting and calling for about 3 years
- one day, h swaps her shift and finds herself seriously injured from a grenade that goes off near her to kill a client
- luckily, she warned the nice vampire next to her and he got them somewhat sheltered from the worst of it
- she goes to the hospital since she was impaled with the table leg, and altho she heals from that, she soon goes back due to extreme fever like symptoms.
- Turns out the vampire's blood must have mixed with her bc she's now a vampire. Not just any vampire, but now the adopted daughter of the head of an old family (as tradition dictates), and she's venom neutral. That means she's one of the rare sought over vampires that can bite and breed with other vampires
- H finds her immediately and whisks her away to the safety of his home
- h chafes against it, feeling like a prisoner
- they fight a lot, but they also can't resist fucking each other
- H has wanted her all along, but he never thougth he could have her. As head of his family, he couldn't abandon them to be with a human since he'd be expected to marry a blood bride. However, now that h is one, he can keep his positon and be with her
- they keep fighting and H gives her a gun and tells her that she either accepts that she can't escape him or
- h escapes but realizes that she has nowhere to go and no idea of how to be a vampire
- she's brought back and H is relieved that she's ok
- he worries for a brief moment that h doesn't care about him at all
- h tells him how she just wants freedom to do her own things and live as norma lof a life and H happily agrees. h begins to realize just how serious he meant when he said that he wanted to give her everything
- h's father is still after her so they decide to make a public outing showing that they're happily together
- h's cousin runs into them and threaten's H's life if she doesn't come with him
- h goes and learns that they just want to have a genuine father daughter relationship with her
- she bonds with them and they decide that she'll visit them at least monthly
- HEA where she's pregnant and her dads and H are on an outing to buy flowers

If you're into that dark, delicious tension with a brooding vampire twist—Grim’s Delight will have you hooked from page one. The cat-mouse/ stalker vibes in this book hit every mark, 3 years? We love a patient boogeyman 😉

Let’s talk Felix. He’s officially been added to my Top 10 Vampire Book Boyfriends list, and honestly? He might just claw his way to the top. There’s something so refreshing about how real and charming he is—he’s protective without being overbearing (kinda ish🤭), sexy without trying too hard, and the way he protects his family? SWOON. I’d let him stalk me anytime.

And Dahlia? WOW. I loved her from the start, but watching her transformation into her truest, fiercest self was absolutely chef’s kiss 😘🤌🏼 . The character growth was so well done—she didn’t just evolve, she claimed herself. Obsessed is an understatement. (Girl crawled across a desk and took what she wanted 👏🏼)
Also, her relationship with CeCe deserves its own shoutout. The love and loyalty between them reminded me so much of my own best friend—it was raw, authentic, and heartwarming. CeCe helping plan her escape (even knowing Dahlia might not want to leave) just shows how deep their bond runs. I LIVE for ride-or-die friendships like that in fiction.

Honestly, I could go on for days about how much I adored this cast of characters . Every single one had depth, charm, and something that made them stand out.

But let’s be real for a second…
The spice?
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Chef’s. Freaking. Kiss.🥵🥵
(HE WENT DOWN ON HER WITH A GUN TO HIS HEAD, AN ABSOLUTE YES FROM ME)
I’m a long-time lover of vampire romance, and this book DELIVERED. If you’re craving a vampire story that brings the heat, tension, and supernatural seduction—Grim’s Delight is 100% for you.

*4.5*
I think this is my wake up call to read more mafia romances cause I loved this! Throw in vampires and I’m sold for sure. Felix was my favorite brand of obsessive, protective and slightly twisted. He not only encouraged Dahlia to be vicious and strong, he enjoyed it IMMENSELY ( if you get what I mean *wink*). Nothing made him happier than her biting him, marking him and expressing her opinions. He quite literally agreed to buy her a car just so she would sit to get checked out by a doctor. He loved seeing her spend his money, showering her with gifts, clothed and jewelry. He was devoted to her and encouraged her to be strong and smart. I really enjoyed him. Dahlia is a spit fire type of girl, protective of her best friend and the life she’s built for herself. She’s driven, strong and determined to carve out the life she wants, so when the life is upended and everything changes for her, she rebels.

I didn’t blame her at all, but when Felix and her established that he wanted them to be partners, equals and would do anything to make her happy, she flourished. She found her footing in a place of power and gained the family she always wanted. I would have loved to see her acclimate to vampire life a bit more, maybe some biting training could’ve been cool and steamy. But this book wasn’t lacking in steam for sure, Felix was a man who loved to eat out, plus plenty of blood and biting play. I definitely enjoyed it, I think I was missing some of the vampire training and biting moments between them but I didn’t mind too much. The ending was also so sweet, I’m glad we got to see more of Alastair and Colin as well! Overall, I definitely enjoyed it!

I read this while it was serializing and meant to get a review out earlier but sometimes your life is as on fire as Yvanna's was before she got, got. And poor Dahlia got turned into a vampire for her trouble, but it sure was worth it in the long-run!

Three years! Dahlia has been talking to Felix via texts and phone calls, but it isn't until she's accidentally turned into a vampire that her and Felix finally get it together and realize that they're meant to be together, especially when it turns out that Dahlia is venom-neutral, making her highly coveted and unfortunately, unsafe. Fortunately for our girlboss who should have been in charge of the Lush in the first place, she's got a lot of new family members looking out for her in the many many tattooed Amauris who came together with Felix when Dora (the original matriarch) died when Dahlia and Felix's story first started in Empire.

I LOVED getting to meet more vampires and seeing the NPU action move to the New Zone (far east coast) and Felix is an absolute delight, not only is he as obsessed with closet organization as the Container Store, he's as obsessed with Dahlia as I am their romance. This is also a GREAT entry into the NPU if you've been hesitant to start since there are already a fair number of books in the world, but it is absolutely worth it. Also Marietta? A woman after my own heart, I wish I had a sword collection.

We also get to meet a few vampires from other families and I can't wait to learn more about them as we continue the Syndicate spin-off books!!

Plus we get a lovely introduction to one of the next NPU spin-off characters, allegedly.

Feels like an urban fantasy tribute to mafia romance -- both in terms of the hero's position (head of a crime family) as well as the two protags' personalities and backstories (she's a plucky, brassy survivor, cool under pressure, with a deeply buried but intense longing for family; he's the ruthless, scary, disciplined leader who melts only for her).

I honestly have never gotten the appeal of ("real-world") mafia romances but the tropes work a lot better for me when applied to supernatural creatures who obviously operate by different rules.

I think this book will appeal to people who loved Bride by Ali Hazelwood, not only because they share some strengths, but also because they share certain weaknesses. Both books have (imo) relatively straightforward plots and emotional journeys; there's no great complexity to the romance, no emotional wounds that get deeply triggered *and resist quick resolution*. Both books also feel a little "locked room" / claustrophobic. If you didn't mind that in Bride, you won't mind it here.

After this mostly delightful reading experience, I'm wondering why I DNF'd the other Kelly books that I've tried. I'm not a fan of deliberate whimsy or "cozy" anything -- and in this book I did catch a few ~whimsical~ vibes (some of the text message interludes and the BFF chats seemed to be trying a little too hard to charm me) -- but thankfully they were few and far between. Maybe the earlier books have more, er, intentionally adorable moments? I guess I'll find out, since this was good enough to persuade me to give her earlier books another try.
