Ashfall

Four years ago, my world collapsed around me.

Nyx

They say grief is love with nowhere to go, I say it blackens the soul and helps you channel the darkness, a darkness he was wrapped in and dragged me under with him. It kept me there to the point I no longer knew what the light was, but I wasn’t codenamed after the Goddess of night without reason.

That was until our unit was hunting down the one responsible for taking him, an international terrorist who was a threat to us all. But all wasn’t what it seemed. I thought I gave my heart to a demon, but it seems as though it’s the devil whose claws have torn it to shreds.

Loyalties will be tested, trust will be broken, and faith requires my hand before I jump off the ledge with it.

Nocturne

The secrets started long before I met my angel. The one who’s deceiving green eyes haunt my memories each night when I close my eyes.

They say love is a man's greatest weakness. I say it’s the fire that scorches my need to destroy. My need to sacrifice and protect.

I coated her in my sins once before, and she willing walked into the burning flames of hell with me. I just hope she’ll take another chance for me to bring her deeper this time, despite the things I’ve done. Otherwise, I’ll have to wrap her hair around my fist and drag her kicking and screaming, and her screams are my favourite melody.

ARC Review

Okay… I loved this book. Like genuinely couldn’t put it down. Ashfall pulled me straight out of my reading slump and reminded me why I love dark romance so much.
This one has everything: slow burn, military setting, second chance, lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers, a morally grey hero, and a secret identity twist that had me gasping. The writing was so good too. The way Emma Barrie-Blair did the time jumps between past and present was seamless, it added so much emotion without ever feeling confusing.
The plot twists?? Insane. I didn’t want to stop reading, but I also didn’t want it to end. The female main character was amazing, strong, capable, but still had that softer, real side that made her so easy to root for.
If you’re into dark romance with tension, secrets, and emotional gut punches, Ashfall needs to be on your TBR immediately.

A debut Dark Military Romance

When you have mourned your love's death for several years. You and the Ashfallen team are tracking a terrorist group, and while you are looking through a scope, you see him as he throws a smirks up towards your direction. WTF????

Nyx, aka Brodie, the FMC, starts trying to connect what is happening. All these questions come up. Why is he alive? Why is he involved with that terrorist group? He was in the military with her and trained her. Was their whole relationship a lie? All these questions come up, and she needs to find answers.

Nocturn, aka Lev, the MMC, is a military man. Morally Gray, touch her and ☠️, Obsessive, Possessive, talk, and he speaks Russian. I loved his character and his dialogue with Nyx throughout the book.

"Before I have you screaming out to a God who won't hear you."

🥵🔥🥵🔥🥵🔥

This is full of action packed with lots of twists and turns, lies, betrayal, and redemption.

There is also a second chance romance, but first, a bit of hate, anger, banter, and plenty of spice. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Spice was perfect. 🔥🔥🥵🥰🔥🔥

I loved reading this dark military romance, and I think it is definitely worth adding to your TBR if you have not read this.

ARC REVIEW 🖤

Well, if I wasn’t certain that military romances were my thing, I sure am now. This story had me hooked from the beginning and it just kept going until the very end. Even after I was left missing them.

Nyx is such a badass MFC. She’s got a f*ck you attitude and is a force to be reckoned with. 4 years ago she looses the love of her life. Or atleast she’s spent those years thinking she had. When Noc turns back up, the scream that I scrumpt (I knew it was coming but he WINKED at her come on), could be heard across the rooms in my house. I knew immediately this man was going to climb the ranks in the book boyfriend list.

Noc is our morally grey MMC who also has a f*ck you attitude, to everyone except Nyx. I absolutely LOVED having chapters in his POV because I just KNEW this man yearned for her. She’s a bit of a brat, and he loves it. Jealousy might be his favourite color on her.

Without giving too much away, these two are the definition of burn the world down for each other. I loved every second of this book and I can’t wait to see what else Emma gives us! (Pls give us more.)

I was fortunate to be able to read this book as an alpha reader. This is not one to be missed from your TBR! Loved the character development of all the characters. The twists and turns were unexpected and kept my emotions on a rollercoaster throughout. The spice was around 🌶️🌶️🌶️, perfect setting for the beginning of a series. If you love second chance romance, a strong female lead who can handle herself while enjoying a “good girl” praise this is for you.

WOWWWWW.
Looking for your next dark military romance? Look no further 👁🔥

Ashfall is OUT NOW 👁✨️

The book is a dark military romance with a whole lot of screaming at the book, emotional trauma and amazing hilarious side characters.
It follows Nyx (Brodie) who has been working within the military for years, her parents worked within it too and she just followed their footsteps. Nyx is a STRONG ASS fmc! She's fiery, loyal, strong and a complete badass. We love to see it 😍

Nyx is in the middle of a stake out mission with her partner when she comes across someone from her past who she thought had passed. It takes her completely by suprise when she sees him. The once love her of life, the person who was her rock, the person who was there for her through everything. He was standing right infront of her. She was in shock, not only to see her past love but she watched him d1e over 4 years ago.

She comes away from the mission not really knowing what to say or do. She keeps it to herself but then ends up telling her partner that she needs to do some digging. What she finds out isn't what she hopes. Betrayal, lies, heartbreak all at once and now she wants her revenge 👀

We then meet Nocturne (Lev) who is the mmc. He's morally grey, posessive, protective, his fierce, strong and also quite charming 🫠

They first reunite in difficult circumstances to say the least. Nyx is full of hatred, anger and disapointment. Is it the full story? No, no it's not. When you think you have it figured out then BAMMM something else happens and it's left you staring at a wall. 🫠😂

The book follows their journey into finding the truth but as the different secrets unfold, it leaves you with serious trust issues 😂

On a side note, the side characters in this are AMAZINGGGG. I become fully obsesed with them all. Emma has done a really good job including them so much in the book, you literally feel just as attached to them as you do the main ones.
The character development in this is also unmatched. Nyx is almost broken throughout the book but the way she comes back and shows her strength is really amazing to read. She's everything i want in a fmc.

Overall, the book is full of unexpected twists and turns. It leaves you with emotional damage and trust issues BUT it does still have a HEA. The book is written as the perfect pace, it's not to fast or to slow but Emma also does a great job in setting the scene at the beginning, i think one of the most important things about a book is the first few chapters. I understood completely what was going on from the beginning. It's got some good steamy scenes and the chemistry and tension is DEFINITLEY there 😍🔥

"The man I loved had just been executed in front of my eyes and I couldn't tell a damn soul what he meant to me".
-
Four years ago, Nyx's entire world collapsed as she watched the man she loved die before her eyes. When ghosts of the past come back to wrap Nyx up in the darkness of secrets, lies, and deceit, the Devils work together to uncover the truth and put an end to an international terrorist.
Loyalities are tested, trust is broken, and faith in love walks a damn fine line.
-
For all the dark romance girlies who froth a fast paced, high stakes military based story, this one is for youuuu!
I loved all the characters in this! Someone sign me up for the 666 unit asap 😈
The plot to spice ratio is absolutely delicious, and I was so hooked into trying to piece everything together because there were some things I did not see coming, and yep, one truth bomb left me reeling. And you bet I shed a tear over a certain someone 🥲
-
"If you're fucking with me within ten feet? You'll end up six feet beneath me". 😏
Nyx is an absolute fkin badassssss- that gal takes no shit and I'd like her on my team tyvm 💁‍♀️

"Hello, Malyshka"
AHHHH THE SCREAM I SCRUMPT omfg 🙈
"I've had a long day, and since you like testing my patience, Brodie. Get on your knees... and crawl to me". 🥵
Nocturne, the man that you are. My goodness. Y'all needa meet him, so thank heck Ashfall is now out in the world for you to devour! 😏
-
"You left me" 💔
"The cruelest of enemies don't show themselves to us with a battle cry, Nyx. They're usually whispering to you in the dark, masking themselves as love".
"You're allowed to have vulnerabilities, and us out of anyone should know them. We need to know when you need to be carried, and not just through a battlefield". Blitz 🥹
"It's like an addiction, one that intoxicates and creates a smoke screen for the harsh realities of life. The most dangerous type of drug I know has a heartbeat and a Russian heritage".

Bloody hell!

This book had me on tenterhooks throughout. It made me experience a whirlwind of emotions: love, lust, sadness, anger, and everything in between. I lost myself completely in the military world the author created. You meet Nyx (Brodie), heartbroken and stricken with grief after losing her mother and the love of her life. Yet, instead of letting her pain consume her, she turns it into a weapon; she is a total badass. Her code name, the Goddess of Night, is fitting. As she delves deeper into the world of secret ops, she begins to realize that not all is as it seems, forcing her to question the people she has trusted her whole life.

Nyx is deep in a mission when she discovers that the man she thought she lost 4 years ago is actually alive. She’s thrown back in time, and the feelings she thought she buried deep down are threatening to resurface.

Nocturne (Lev) believed he was protecting Nyx by going dark and working undercover for the very enemy they both wanted to destroy. Noc is the epitome of an alpha male, and letting go of the one person who broke through his barriers to save her was the hardest thing he’s ever done. He’s morally grey, possessive, and sometimes a little unhinged, and, of course, he’s Russian. Noc has a "f*ck you" attitude toward everyone except her. During the years apart, he’s yearned for her fiercely, and even when she shows her bratty side, he can’t help but love her. He craves her, and her jealousy, especially when another woman is near him, might just be his favourite look on her.

The story is packed with action, delivering twists, turns, lies, betrayal, and ultimately, redemption.

There's also a slow-burning second-chance romance, but not before a delicious mix of hate, anger, sharp banter, and plenty of spice. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

It has truly been an honour to be part of Emma’s street team!! Promoting this debut book, and having early access to the arc of this book! The anticipation and wait was 100% worth it!! I could not put this book down once I started reading it, and am just gutted that it has taken me so long to write my review, we just fostered a new puppy which has taken all of my time & energy, I just hope that the sneak peaks which I posted has filled the void and built the excitement for everyone in the mean time!

The tropes;
*Lovers - Enemies - Lovers 🖤
*Second Chance Love ❤️
*Morally Grey MMC
*Slow Burn 🔥
*Secret Identity
*Betrayal & Redemption
*Military/Black Ops

This is a MUST READ, the story was to die for… it had EVERYTHING in a dark military romance that you could ask for… seamless jumping between time lines, dual povs, strong fmc, plot twists, secret identities, under cover missions, it had suspense which will keep you hooked until the very end, a solid plot and the character development *chefs kiss* I felt connected to each and every one of them!! You’ll honestly feel like part of the 616! 😍🔥

I’ve only started reading again properly this last year, and have experimented a lot with different genres so was intrigued at how this military dark romance would play out and let me tell you, if all military romances are like this…. Count me in!! Emma, you have honestly outdone yourself for a debut book, you should be so proud of yourself!! It’s been amazing getting to know you these last few months since I’ve joined bookstagram, I am in awe of you and this book - I cannot wait to see what Vengeance has in store!! You’re definitely a go to author for me now, I loved your writing style, with the bonus of a playlist to work along side the book, you’re ticking all the right boxes! And that spice 🥵 you’ll have to read it to see for yourself!

I love a good military romance and this one was great! The romance in it was sexy, deep, and reminded me in a way of Mr. And Mrs. Smith when it came to some scenes. I loved how there was action in it and that the fighting scenes were so detailed. I could picture the events happening in my mind. For a debut novel, I think it hit all the right marks and the ending tied any loose ends up perfectly. I love that this is a standalone book and I cannot wait for the next one.

I would recommend Ashfall to those who like dark military romance books such as Leave Me Behind by K.M. Moronova. I would also recommend this book to non-romance readers who enjoy a book filled with action and suspense. I thought the plot was very intriguing and it kept my attention the entire time. While there is spice in this book, I definitely did not think it was overdone at all and I would rate it a 2/5 for total spice content.

Nyx and Nocturne are two people I would not want to be an enemy of and they work so well together. Adam, Hawk, and Blitz all added some humor and substance to the story which I enjoyed.

A quote that stuck to with me while reading:

“The cruelest of enemies don’t show themselves to us with battle cries, Nyx. They’re usually whispering to you in the dark, masking themselves as love”

4/5 for me, overall. 2/5 spice.

Thank you Emma for the ARC. I can’t wait to read more of your books!

This book right here..

I was in a chokehold from the beginning. It grabbed me and kept me hooked. I love when a book does that. You know asserts the dominance lol.

Now I don’t want to do spoilers. So let’s just say noc and nyx. You’re going to cheer them on. Trust me!! Do not go against me on that!

Graves.. we despise him like our tbrs despise us. Again trust me. I never liked the dude and I was right.

The squad. Basically our found family situation. We love them.

I use 0 triggers but if you have them check em. I will tell you that you’re gonna laugh, you will most def cry because my evil @$$ shed tears and cried for multiple reasons I will not disclose in this review. I got mad. Yeah my $90 Tre’s generaciones was almost a casualty of anger. I was happy. I smiled. I had all the emotions and now I feel the need to make my gaming friends carry me on cod lol.

But this story was beautifully amazing and ruins in the best possible ways and you need to add to your tbr because it’s worth the emotional damage!

I'll never tire of this woman, and whilst she may look innocent on the outside, I know the truth that lies beneath her. She's just as dark as I am. Two monsters destined to be together with a love like wildfire. Our smoke forever lingering long after the burn scorches the earth, and our flames burn brighter than any stars in the sky.

I had the privilege to be an arc reader for this book and let me tell you this. I went in with 0 expectations and left with such a great vibe. I loved this book 🥰🤗

Let me start with the FMC, Nyx. She’s a trained black ops military badass. Smart, cunning, and sharp, but she also has a softer side.

The MMC is Nocturne. He’s the definition of a morally grey man who would do absolutely anything for her.
I can’t say too much about the main characters without spoiling anything 😏

The story itself is well-structured and easy to follow. There are some military terms sprinkled throughout, but they’re easy enough for anyone to understand. The plot switches between the present and the past, which made it impossible for me to put the book down. There was always something happening that kept me wanting to read more.

For the spice lovers: yes, there’s definitely spice, but it’s not as overwhelming as in some other books. It’s so well balanced that it feels like a true action-packed story with the perfect touch of spice and romance.

And the ending had me in a complete chokehold. I was this close to throwing my Kobo across the room.
I love when a book can make me feel like that!

I genuinely loved every second of the book. It’s absolutely worth picking up when it releases on November 14th 🤗🤗

Wow, what a great read, from a first time author!! This was an amazing dark romance mixed with suspense! The storyline was so well written, the characters were strong, and the spice was perfect!! This book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time, wondering the who, how, and what?!! It had a great conspiracy twist to it and things I wasn’t expecting at all!!

The badass FMC, Nyx is a special ops soldier who is part of the Ashfall team. She gets involved with Nocturne in a taboo relationship, that no one knows about. However when a mission ends up going terribly wrong, Nocturne ends up dying right in front of her at the hands of a Russian terrorist. Now 4 years later, she’s still hunting the man that took him from her. The team is working in Russia again to discover what Volokov has done with a chemical weapon and his operations that pose a threat to the US. When Nyx and her team go to do a recon mission at a Russian nightclub, Nyx runs into the last person she expected, now her world is turned upside down. She has no idea who the real bad guy is or who to trust!!

This is definitely a 100% book recommendation, must read!! I can’t wait to see what Emma comes up with next, whatever it is I’m here for it!! Emma you knocked it so far out of the park with this book, thank you for the opportunity to ARC read it for you!!

If anyone knows a Noc, Nocturne or a Lev who’s a Russian soldier can you let me know please as I fear I’m in grave danger after reading this book and I need saving in every way from a highly trained black ops soldier.

God where do I start, I’m still trying to gather my bearings….

Nyx (Brodie)
Absolutely stunning and impressive, such a strong heroine, absolutely fearless, fiery, sassy, the way she turned her grief, loss and trauma into being such a badass special forces soldier.

Nocturne (Lev)
Stunning, tatted, dominant, intense blue eyes with storms and emotions raging behind them. Fearless precise special forces soldier. Literally will do anything for nyx and basically burn the whole world for her.

The story line (which I won’t give away) was serving continuously, I didn’t put this book down and took my kindle with me absolutely everywhere including the toilet. The angst, chemistry, feelings and sass between Nyx and Noc is honestly just URGH 🌶️ They were truly made for eachother in every way. The spice was written in such a way it was just URGH 🌶️

If you’re still not convinced by this review to buy and read this review just read bellow…

“I’ve had a long day, and since you like testing my patience, Brodie. Get on your knees… and crawl to me.”

I loved this book — genuinely could not put it down. I devoured it in under six hours because every chapter kept pulling me deeper in. With a delicious slow burn, a military setting, second-chance tension, lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers dynamics, a morally grey hero, and a gasp-worthy secret-identity twist, this story delivers everything you want in a high-stakes romance.

Emma Barrie-Blair’s writing was seamless. The past/present timeline transitions added emotional depth without ever feeling confusing, and the character development was phenomenal — not just for the main couple, but the entire cast. The female lead especially was strong, capable, and complex, yet still soft and real enough to root for. The plot twists were wild, the emotional beats hit hard, and I found myself torn between racing through the pages and wishing the book would never end.

The spice sat at a perfect 🌶️🌶️🌶️, giving just enough heat while leaving room for the series to build. If you love dark romance with secrets, tension, emotional gut punches, a strong FMC who can handle herself, and a hero who delivers top-tier “good girl” praise, this book is absolutely for you. I received an ARC, and I can confidently say: this is one you need on your TBR immediately.

Military

Dark Romance

Second Chance

Forbidden

Men in Uniform

Trauma

Touch Her and Die

What a rollar coaster of a story!!! I had ALL the emotions and I was not disappointed about how it ended! Let me just start with how much I loved reading about Nyx and Noc. The way those two loved and fought for one another even when they tried not to was so profound! Losing someone to then found out they were never gone is heart wrenching but her feeling of betrayal are no match for the pain.

Getting to know all of the members of thw Ashfall team and how much they care for one another makes the impact of some of the events so warm but also wrecked my heart all at once. Thia was my first military romance where they were in a special ops type of enviroment and I did like how real the details of those scenes were, it almost made me feel like I was there with them in the throws.

Thank you sooo much for the opportunity to read your first ever book and you have made a lifelong fan of me!!!! I look forward to buying this to show off on my ever growing bookshelf of favorites!!! Make sure to use the playlist gives it a vibe!

4 ⭐️ Dark military romance , so as always check trigger warnings before reading . This was an easy read with lots of side characters and plot building . The book starts off plenty slow (understandable) in order to build the characters back story, later picks up with plenty of action after the 60% mark so hang in there

Nyx and Nocturne have a very complicated dynamic due to a messy past and have to navigate building trust . I loved the military plot line , the angst , the drama and chaos. Gotta love some badass females in action. However , this may just be because I’m desensitized to so many dark romance books but the plot got to be predictable. The addition of so many side characters seemed unnecessary if they were going to be underdeveloped, and certain events towards the end seemed rushed through which made them pointless .

This isn’t me saying it was a bad read , just more so suggest it to readers who are just getting into dark romance or dark military romances and aren’t bothered by any of the triggers .

ARC Review

Emotionally charged military romance that grabbed me from page one and never let go. Emma Barrie-Blair delivers a gripping balance of action, trauma, and slow-burn connection that feels both raw and deeply human.

Reese is a phenomenal heroine—tough, guarded, and shaped by everything she’s survived. Her inner conflicts are written with honesty, and I loved watching her rediscover her strength on her own terms. Cole, with his brooding loyalty and battle-worn edges, is the perfect match: protective without being controlling, and vulnerable in ways he tries hard to hide. Their chemistry is explosive, but what really stands out is how believable and earned their trust feels.

The military backdrop is vivid and tense, adding real stakes without overshadowing the relationship. Barrie-Blair handles the darker themes with care, giving the characters space to breathe, break, and heal.

Fast-paced, emotional, and atmospheric, Ashfall delivers everything I want in a dark military romance.

A gripping, powerful read—highly recommended.

When you’re part of a covert team tracking down a terrorist, the last thing you expect is to see the love of your life—the one you buried years ago—alive and well. That’s exactly the situation our main character finds herself in, and it kicks off a thrilling ride full of twists, secrets, and emotional turmoil. With the help of her tech-genius partner, she starts digging into classified government files, only to uncover something that could destroy everything she thought she knew. Is her lost love really a traitor… or is someone much closer pulling the strings?

This story has everything—intense action, high-stakes suspense, forbidden attraction, and a powerful second-chance romance. The characters are tough, smart, and deeply human, making it easy to root for them through every twist and betrayal.

A perfect pick for readers who love romantic suspense with strong leads and nonstop intrigue. Definitely recommend!

I am so happy I got the opportunity to read this as an ARC.

This military romance had suspense and twists and turns that kept me wanting more throughout the whole story. The love that Nyx and Nocturne had for each other was one that even secrets couldn’t fully destroy. In the darkest of moments their love for one another along with promises made provides the light they needed to continue forward to bring justice. When a man says he will burn the world for you I imagine it’s a character like Nocturne. The love story is engaging, but all of the suspense in this story was truly what kept me engaged. Nyx discovers that everything she thought she knew was a lie and that the truth hurts, but also can be freeing. If you like military special ops, romance, suspense, and action this book is probably for you. Emma Barrie-Blair did an amazing job with her debut novel. I look forward to more from her in the future.

“But before I have you screaming out to a God who won’t hear you, I need you to know that my feelings for you are quite the opposite. I’ve loved you from the moment I laid eyes on you, and these four years without you have been the hardest sacrifice I’ve ever endured, Brodie.”

I am absolutely floored that this is a debut book because I was utterly captivated from the first page, and my attention didn't waver once during the entire story. The dark, gritty, and edgy world that Emma created for Nyx and Nocturne was the perfect backdrop to this dark military romance. Nyx was an absolutely bloody menace to anyone who got in her way, and I loved every second of her devious nature. Nocturne, with his rakish charm, had a ruthless yet complex charm about him. What red flags??? Nah, didn't see 'em. And the big baddie??!! Let me at him, I wanted to make him bleed, too! I can't wait to read more from Emma Barrie-Blair!

This is my first military dark romance, and wow what a ride! When I saw a few of the author’s posts about this book, I knew I needed to read it. Thank you to Emma Barrie-Blair for sending me an ARC.

Intense. That’s the best way to describe Ashfall.
Lies, betrayal, love, tears, and second chances, this book had my attention from beginning to end.

I absolutely love a strong female main character, and Nyx was exactly that. She can kick ass, has a sharp tongue, and just enough softness inside to make you fall in love with her.

Then there’s Nocturne - rough, tough, and willing to do anything for Nyx, even if it means dying to save her.

The secondary characters were just as amazing as the leads. Blitz, with her fiery attitude, easily became another favorite of mine.

Ashfall is action-packed, emotional, and full of heart-pounding moments that kept me on my toes the entire time. Highly recommend adding this one to your TBR!

This is a dark, emotionally intense military romance that follows two characters with a complicated past and an undeniable pull toward each other. The story balances slow-building tension with rising stakes as Nyx and Nocturne navigate loyalty, secrets, and the kind of history that won’t stay buried.

Nyx is strong and guarded, Nocturne is deeply flawed but compelling, and their dynamic is the main draw — messy, magnetic, and full of unresolved emotion. The tone is heavy at times, but in a way that makes the romance feel layered rather than dramatic for drama’s sake.

I enjoyed the author’s writing style. Her ability to make the reader feel the emotions of the characters, as well as, understand their POV.

If you like morally grey characters, emotional depth, and romance with a suspenseful edge (but not a full thriller), Ashfall is a great choice, intense without giving away any twists.

couldn't get enough!
I really enjoyed everything about this book. I haven't read many military romance books, but this is definitely a top favorite. love that we're in the middle of all the chaos with the characters. it was intense and very suspenseful with all the missions and mysteries of events that go on. not to mention the romance.
Nocturne and Nyx were EVERYTHING. it's going to be hard to say much without spoiling anything, but get ready for a ride with these two. There's so much that happens between them, around them. twists you don't see coming. Secrets and betrayals, but not with what you think.
it's just a ride. the ending being all worth it.
don't get me started on the emotional ride....I'm still not ok. Blitz 😭😭😭 that's all I'm going to say there. I just simply love Blitz's character.

I could read more about these characters though.

thank you so much Emma for the arc. 🫶🏻
