Heartbreak cracks her open. Dance puts her back together.

When Laura's husband leaves her for the local weather girl, she doesn’t just lose her man. She loses the life she built around him. She gave him everything: her time, her body, her dreams. Now he's just trading her in for a younger model? She has to fix this. Fix herself.

Still caught in an estranged marriage she refuses to release, Laura signs up for a cardio hip hop class, determined to remind her husband of what they had. She expects sweat and sore muscles. What she gets is Roman Graham, a gritty, magnetic fitness trainer who doesn't apologize or pull punches. Laura's direct opposite in every way, yet impossible to ignore.

What begins as a feisty dance-off turns into a slow burn partnership charged with undeniable coach client tension, intimate conversation, and steamy dance routines that push Laura past her limits. Each step forces her to confront her doubts, her desires, and what it truly means to take up space as a plus size woman. And somewhere between the music and the movement, she starts falling for the one man she thought she hated.

But just as she begins starting over, the past slips back in, uninvited and haunting.

Now Laura must decide what she’s really fighting for: the marriage that broke her, or the woman she’s becoming?

The Dance is a women’s fiction with romance novel perfect for readers who love slow burn romance, opposites attract chemistry, and stories about a second chance with yourself after heartbreak.

This book completely surprised me in the best way. On the surface, it’s about a woman dealing with the fallout of her marriage ending, but really it’s about rediscovering who you are when life knocks you down. Laura’s journey felt so raw and relatable — the messy parts, the healing, the moments where she wasn’t sure if she was moving forward or just spinning in circles. I felt every bit of it.

And the dance aspect? I loved that. It wasn’t just a hobby for her, it became the thing that helped her rebuild piece by piece. Watching her reconnect with her body, her confidence, and her joy through movement gave me chills more than once.

The people around her made the story even stronger — some had me rolling my eyes and yelling at the page, while others showed up with quiet, steady support that reminded me how powerful real connection can be. That balance, paired with Laura’s growth, made the story feel layered and real. In the end, what stuck with me most was how the book blends heartbreak with empowerment: it’s not about chasing love that let you down, but about reclaiming your spark, choosing yourself first, and realizing that any love worth keeping won’t dim your light.

I enjoyed this story from cover-to-cover! Whew I was nervous there for a minute thinking she was going to give that man another chance but sis found her strength! This was a reminder to love yourself and fix yourself for you not for anyone else and everything else will fall into place!

Roman had so many layers to him I thought wow he is truly a jerk but turns out that man was using all that as a defense mechanism because he hadn’t healed from his trauma!

Griffin- yeah buddy you got exactly what you deserved sir! What made him think he was going to just slide back in because he saw another man taking his place? Nah bruh 😂

Ok ok in summary - A time was had reading this!

There are some stories that entertain you… and then there are stories that hold a mirror up to your soul. The Dance is the latter.

Laura’s journey is not wrapped in perfection, it’s raw, messy, and painfully real. She’s a woman shaped by words that were never meant to build her, only break her. From a verbally abusive stepfather to a husband who stopped seeing her, Laura’s identity has been slowly erased, piece by piece. And what makes it hit even harder? She doesn’t even realize how much of herself she’s lost.

When Griffin leaves and files for divorce, as you’d expected it was her breaking point. She is determined to earn her way back into being loved. That right there? That’s the kind of emotional truth that stings. Because so many women have been there thinking if they just change enough, shrink enough, become “better”… they’ll finally be chosen.

Enter Roman Graham.

Roman is an arrogantly handsome fitness trainer/ famous dancer. he is also disruptor. A mirror. A challenge. Where Griffin planted doubt, Roman demands strength. Where Laura hears insults, Roman sees potential. Their dynamic is intense, layered, and electric, but what makes it compelling is that Roman can’t “save” her. He can only show her what’s possible. Laura has to choose herself.

And that’s where this story truly shines.

✨ The dance class becomes more than fitness…it’s therapy.
✨ Movement becomes healing.
✨ Sweat becomes release.
✨ And every step Laura takes… is a step back to herself.

But let’s talk about Griffin for a second, because whew. He is the perfect example of how trauma bonding can disguise itself as love. The manipulation, the backtracking, the “I still love you” speeches when he feels her slipping away—it’s frustrating, but painfully accurate. His character shows how easy it is to fall back into what’s familiar, even when it’s harmful.

And that pivotal moment? When Laura finds her voice in the hospital…
Yeah. That wasn’t just for Griffin. That was for her.

She didn’t just wake him up, she woke herself up.

By the time Laura finally chooses her happiness, it doesn’t feel rushed or forced it feels earned. Her confession to Roman, her vulnerability, her truth… it’s not about being chosen anymore. It’s about standing in her worth and saying, “I see me now.”

💭 Final Thoughts:
The Dance is a powerful reminder that:

* Words can wound deeper than hands ever could
* Healing isn’t linear,it’s a fight against voices that live in your head
* And sometimes love isn’t about who stays… but who helps you see yourself clearly

This isn’t just a romance.
It’s a reclamation story.

⭐️ Rating: 5/5
Emotional, empowering, and beautifully honest.

If you love stories about self-worth, second chances (the right ones), and women rising from the ashes of who they were told they were… this one will stay with you long after the last page. 💃🏾✨

I was late night scrolling on the clock app and saw a new-to-me author talking about her books. And honestly? It reminded me how much author content works because I downloaded this immediately. Zero regrets.

As a former dancer who used to teach hip hop classes back in the day, this felt incredibly relatable. The way dance becomes release, confidence, therapy, and transformation in this story really resonated with me.

At its core, this is a story about rebuilding yourself after heartbreak.

Laura’s husband leaves her for another woman and instead of processing the loss, she initially becomes obsessed with “fixing” herself to win him back. That emotional spiral felt painfully real because so many women are conditioned to believe they need to become smaller, prettier, quieter, or more agreeable to deserve love.

Then enters Roman Graham.

And babyyyy Roman got on my nerves at first 😭 arrogant, condescending, way too aware that he’s fine. But weirdly? He felt real. Beneath all the bravado was someone who genuinely saw Laura long before she could see herself again.

What I loved most is that this story never makes romance the cure. Roman supports Laura, challenges her, pushes her… but the real love story here is Laura reconnecting with herself through dance, movement, confidence, and joy.

Watching her slowly reclaim space in her own life was beautiful.

And I really appreciated that the book doesn’t shy away from the realities plus size women experience when it comes to desirability, self-worth, and how the world treats their bodies. It felt honest instead of sanitized.

This was emotional, empowering, romantic, and deeply human. I immediately added more of this author’s books to my TBR.

Another book off the shelf. We keep reading with intention. 📚

This book surprised me in the quietest, deepest way.

The Dance isn’t just about heartbreak…it’s about what happens after the life you built falls apart.

Laura doesn’t just lose her husband… she loses the version of herself she shaped around him. And watching her claw her way back…
Messy, unsure, vulnerable felt so real and relatable it hurt (in the best way).

What I loved most is that her healing doesn’t come from finding another man to save her.
It comes from movement.
From sweat.
From music.

From remembering her body is hers and her joy is allowed.
Dance becomes therapy.
Power.
Permission.

And yes, Roman is magnetic and supportive and frustrating in that human way but this story is never about being chosen by him.

It’s about Laura choosing herself first.
That glow up isn’t physical.
It’s internal.
It’s confidence.
It’s peace.
It’s finally breathing again.

Also, can we talk about how empowering this is for women who’ve lost themselves in marriage, motherhood, or just… life?

And the representation?
Beautiful. Healthy. Refreshing.

This one will sit with me for a while. 💗

If you’ve ever had to rebuild yourself piece by piece, this book will see you.

It’s always the best writers who can make you feel a plethora of emotions for characters on printed pages and Kimberly R. Vargas has put on a master class in just that.

The Dance made me feel a bit of everything. I felt for the main character Laura as she tried to find herself again after the worst day of her life. Without going through it I felt her pain, her sadness, her determination, and her will to stand up taller than before.

There are moments in this novel that make you feel anger, resentment, sadness, and hurt. But to balance it out you also feel passion, love, a sense of family, and accomplishment.

This book has everything and it cannot be denied how wonderfully it was written.

The Woman Beneath the Doubt

Whew, let’s talk about this one. Usually, I say some people aren’t worth two nickels rubbed together but Griffin? He wasn’t worth two pennies rubbed together, and that’s saying a lot. Laura allowed her entire identity to be swallowed by her husband’s, so when everything unraveled, she was left grasping at straws trying to remember who she even was. Watching how much she sacrificed, what she gave up for someone so undeserving was unbelievable. She frustrated me A LOT, to the point I had to put the book down for a bit. At 44%, I wanted to shake her because the blatant disrespect was right there and she kept accepting it. By 80%, I was asking why they were still playing house (and let’s be clear, both (Laura and Griffin) were wrong with their “other” people). Laura’s self-esteem was so low that self-sabotage felt normal, and I found myself yelling, STAND UP! But at 90%? She finally decided, thank goodness. And I must give Roman his credit: he encouraged her, challenged her. He saw the woman she couldn’t see and pushed her to tap into the baddie she’d always been. Overall, this was an enjoyable, but patience-testing read; once you understand where Laura’s negative self-talk stems from, you extend her grace, and the story becomes more reflective than frustrating. At its core, it’s a reminder that if nobody else roots for you, you have to root for yourself.

Wow! This book was a surprise in the best way. While reading, it felt so cinematic like I was reading a movie script. I’m not going to lie, Laura’s self-sabotaging tendencies were getting to me at first, and I started to grow weary of her character. But as I kept reading, I fell in love with her journey of self-discovery. It really made me realize how critical we as women can be about how we show up in different spaces, and how negative self-talk can sometimes get the best of us.

I think what I loved most was Laura falling in love with herself again through her first love: dance. Once she started seeing herself in a better light, everything started clicking in the best way.

Whew, Roman was a lot to take in at first because he was so mean to Laura in the beginning, and I did not like his “I’m too sexy for my shirt” persona. But as I got to know him better, I realized he’s really just a teddy bear with a hard exterior. Once he started opening up, I understood his personality more. Their love story was a slow burn, but it unfolded in the best way. The tension and yearning were SO enjoyable to read!!

All in all, this was a slow burn, but man, was it a joy! Can’t wait to read the second book about Yana!! 5/5 ⭐️

Laura's world feels like it's turning upside down when her soon to be ex asks for a separation and ultimately asks for a divorce. After ten years and losing herself to motherhood and working at being the perfect wife, she joins her cousin in a workout class where she meets sexy instructor Roman who pushes Laura in ways she hasnt been pushed before. In return, Laura starts to feel her pink come back and remembers what it means to love herself first.

If I could rate this book 10 stars, I would in a heartbeat. A book I had no idea I needed, I resonated with Laura so much. It is so so so easy to lose ourselves in middle of trying to be everything for everyone and for people to not notice until its entirely too late for reconciliation. I was so so so proud of this beautiful character, watching her embrace herself and recognize that she was never the problem no matter who tried to tell her otherwise. All the characters in this book were remarkable - everyone played an important role in Laura's path to love and I love how even minor characters with no name still were given that importance - again a powerful reminder that everyone we meet will help shape who we are depending on how we let them. This is very high on my reread list. Thank you Vargas for this amazing book!

Your husband tells you he wants a divorce.

Do you:
A. Glow up and try to win him back
or
B. Move on with the fine man who sees your worth from the beginning?

That’s the emotional crossroads at the heart of The Dance by Kimberly R. Vargas—and babyyy, I was invested.

Laura starts transforming herself after her husband leaves, trying to become the version of herself she thinks he wants. But then Roman Graham enters the picture—a dance instructor, motivator, and professional confidence booster who sees her value from day one.

So the real question becomes:
Do you fight for the love you had first… or choose the person helping you learn to love yourself?

This story really had me thinking about self-worth, second chances, and what it means to be truly seen.

Laura deserved to find herself - on her own terms

I really wanted Laura to snap out of the negative self talk, and see herself for her worth. And not wait for validation from either her (ex) husband or new boyfriend. It was frustrating but then I willed myself to empathize with her, to give her some grace.

Our past traumas can do a number on us and we can live with the false belief that we aren’t worthy of being ourselves and loved. It seems Laura does finally get there - I just wish she’d stayed single for a little while discovering herself fully before jumping into a new relationship!

Rocky start….Epic finish

I must say for this to be a new author she came out the gates swinging with this one. When I tell you that Ms. Laura worked my nerves throughout majority of the book I thought I would start pulling my hair out. She definitely redeemed herself towards the end. Griffin had a lot of audacity and it showed by his “do as I say, not as I do” mentality. I loved Roman’s character development. 10/10 highly recommend 5 ⭐️

This book is about Laura who is recently separated from her husband and she believes her weight gain throughout their marriage is the main reason. Laura is clearly struggling with self esteem and self worth issues when her cousin Yana invited her to a dance workout class by the irresistible Roman.
Laura and Roman don’t hit it off right away it seems but Roman offers to help Laura with her fitness goals and of course the attraction follows. But Laura is still fighting to get her marriage back (even though hubby has found him a play thing). We see Laura deal with her pending divorce, her feelings towards Roman and herself.

This books discusses body positivity, self esteem, and verbal abuse. There is no spice in this and you don’t miss it in my opinion. I would definitely recommend this book.

Reeeeally enjoyed

This book had me locked pretty much from the beginning, though Laura and Roman took turns getting on my nerves. Laura won that, though. LOL Despite that, I enjoyed the progressions, with Laura and herself, her and Roman, and Laura and her split from Griffin. Awesome to see. A good 4.5 for me. :)

The Dance is a warm, empowering read about finding your footing after life knocks you down. It’s a story that blends humor, heart, and just the right touch of romance, all while showing the beauty of self-discovery.

Kimberly R. Vargas writes authentically, making the main character’s journey relatable and inspiring. The pacing gives you time to connect with the characters, and the emotional beats land with sincerity. By the end, I felt uplifted and reminded that it’s never too late to start over or try something new.

⭐ Rating: 4/5 – A heartfelt debut perfect for readers who love stories of resilience, growth, and a dash of romance.

First off… I was hoping Griffin got like caught in a fire or something 😂 He is the definition of an ain’t-shit man. The way Roman kept calling him Loser and Mr. Stiff.. was diabolical, but also accurate.

Now Roman… whew. He ain’t perfect. He had his mean moments, and I wanted to shake him sometimes, but he showed up from day one, big or small, he supported Laura through everything. Griffin only tried to spin the block once she lost that weight, and I was screaming at her every time she even entertained him. Girl, throw that “husband” title in the trash and leave it there lmaoo

But here’s what really got me!! This story is so empowering for women who are trying to find themselves again after divorce, separation, or just losing themselves in life. At first, I worried Laura’s growth would just come from finding Roman... but no. She found the woman she was before Griffin, before motherhood, before life broke her down. Watching her reclaim that joy through dance was so emotionally impactful, I couldn’t do anything but tear up.

And can we talk about the representation? A nontoxic Black romance that felt real, emotional, and healthy!! Chef's kiss 🤌🏾🤌🏾

For my friends who don’t like spice, this one’s perfect for you, completely closed door but still packed with heart and intimacy.

Huge, huge, huge thank you to Kimberly R. Vargas for gifting me this ARC! A review wasn’t required, but I honestly loved this story too much not to share.

Loved that Laura's character as to why the way she is was shown through bits and pieces of her past. I also liked that it showed that it's not always easy to bring yourself to love yourself.

what I didn't like was Roman tbh. It may be a spoiler but who starts throwing things(cake) against a wall our of anger? I know it came from a place of concern from Laura's attitude or whatever but still that turned me off.

I also don't truly like the Cheating trope. I know her and her husband are getting a divorce but just because he started it,she doesn't need to do that too.

This story is a beautiful blend of healing, rediscovery, and finding love again all wrapped into one. But listen… there were times where I wanted to jump through the pages and strangle a couple characters... leave them sittin’ there lookin’ like a cartoon with their eyes popped out 😳😂.

That’s how you kno Kimberly did her thing... the story had me that invested. Beautifully delivered, deeply felt, and definitely a must read.

ARC Review

Laura's journey to getting back to her first love was an interesting one to read about in this book. At first the motivation for dancing was not only to get back to dancing but also to be used as an avenue to lose weight to get her husband back. I understood the negativity that Laura had to go through growing up with being told that she wasn't good enough or pretty enough due to her weight and that led her to have a lot of negative thoughts and low self esteem as adult but even when she didn't have a reason to feel that way she did and she irked me at times.

Roman's character was a little annoying at first with his arrogant behavior but he definitely grew on me as the book went on. It was nice to see him open up more and reveal to Laura why he was the way he was when it came to being with women. After their real first date and once he opened up to her it was nice to see their relationship grow in and out of the dance studio. The fact that she almost jeopardized what she had with him because of what Griffin told her was a little annoying too because after all Griffin put her threw it was like why even consider giving him the time of day.

Overall, I think this was a good debut book by Kimberly Vargas. At the end of it all, I was happy with the way the book ended and that Laura was able to finally become empowered and start dancing for herself but I just felt like she was trying to hold on to something that didn't serve her for too long. For that reason I gave the book 3.5 stars.

Thank you to Kimberly for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

The Dance
Kimberly R. Vargas

Laura can’t avoid the constant internal loop of negativity within her mind. With every good intention, she continuously has to buffer through the mental loops and decipher, which thoughts actually belong to her. The lack of parental guidance has left her with a void that she cannot fill. The damage left by someone who should’ve protected her lingers.

When the commitment of forever with someone who vowed to love you for eternity dissolves. She is left with the constant bombardment of betrayal in her daily existence. She desperately needs something to help her focus. Thankfully, her cousin’s suggestion of a dance class proves to be far more than what she initially expected.

Roman hides the depths of his pain behind a chisel physique, catchy catchphrases and a sarcastic disposition. Deep down, he longs for the same thing that Laura does. He to wants the sweetness of those quietly, shared moments and the conscious consideration of another person’s feelings. Someone he can build something with.

What is life, but not a constant test of sharing the rawest parts of yourself in hopes that someone will protect those parts of you?

✨ The Dance by Kimberly R. Vargas ✨

Laura (FMC) went through SO much…
losing her family, growing up mentally abused, and ending up in a marriage that made her forget who she was

She really gave up her DREAM of dancing just to be the “perfect wife”… yeah no, I was hurt for her 😭

And that darn EX??? don’t get me started 🗑️

Now Griffin (college sweetheart/ex)… I ain’t even gonna lie, I lowkey felt for him towards the end. Having family put so much expectations on you kind of weighs on you but it doesn’t take away from him being a grown many with kids allowing them to dictate his life while married.
BUT BABYYYY… let’s talk about Roman, a character might I say 😂
Dance instructor. Hurt. Guarded.
But the man was fighting for his life trying not to fall for Laura 🤣

✨ What really did it for me:
Laura finally finding her VOICE
Getting her confidence + groove BACK was refreshing!
I’m not even a slow burn girly but this was worth the read.

Thank you to the author for an advanced copy of this book for an honest review. Overall, I liked the writing and the story of one woman's comeback after taking a chance to fully believe in herself. I will admit that I found Roman's character to be insufferable for most of this book, until about the last 15%. I couldn't really take him seriously with all of the third-person speak, but even some of his interactions with Laura and her kids made me cringe. Because of this, I didn't take his character seriously as a love interest for Laura, and it definitely colored my experience as I read the rest of the book.

Laura, I found, was more believable as a character, especially as she represented someone who had been verbally abused and allowed the noise of those insults and vicious commentary to occupy her thoughts. This was a good read overall, and I think some strong messaging for anyone looking for a strong FMC who finds herself again.

This was such a great read. I went through all the emotions lol There were many areas of Laura’s journey of self doubt that were relatable. The way Laura talks to herself is the hardest part. I would find myself wanting to jump into the book and reassure her myself. I definitely grew to love Roman as the story progressed. I was not a fan of his hard exterior and pop-ups in the beginning, that changed the more he opened up to Laura and we got to see other sides of him. He truly loved her the way she needed! I could never get past Roman referring to himself in third person lol
Overall this was a great read! The Music selections for the class were hitting lol I can picture the scenes so clearly.

I’m so grateful to have received an ARC of Kimberly Vargas’ debut novel! The Dance was a beautiful story of finding yourself after life doesn’t go as planned. I absolutely loved the dancing scenes and Laura’s journey. Kimberly writes such wonderfully real characters that I’m always rooting for (love her serial, Fallin’ for the Fame, on Substack too!) and her secondary characters always crack me up. If you’re looking for a sweet starting over story with closed door romance, this is a good one. Congratulations Kimberly!

The Dance is a beautiful, uplifting story of heartbreak, healing, and rediscovery. Laura’s journey is relatable and empowering reminding us it’s never too late to start over. There are moments that burn with anger and resentment, but this book also had me laughing and cheering.

Every dance scene felt so vivid; had me feeling like I was right there next to Roman, burning up the stage EVERY time. His early interactions with Eli cracked me up, and I loved "watching" Eli slowly win him over.

My biggest frustration? Griffin trying to spin the block once he saw Laura glowing up. And she made me mad more times than not falling for his empty promises. I wish she could hear me yelling at her through the pages 😂.

This is a good read if you prefer sweet and loving over steamy. This is a closed-door romance, but still full of intimacy and connection and I loved every page of it!

Congrats on a job well done and thank you for the ARC!

What a moving story. I understood Laura’s pain. Although I’ve never been told the things her stepdad said to her, I know all about the voices in your head telling you that you’re not good enough and other harmful things. Although it took her awhile, I’m glad she regained her confidence and self love. I wanted to slap Roman many times throughout the book but he redeemed himself once he stopped being an a**hole. Overall good story with good character development. Very good read.

Thank you so much, Kimberly R. Vargas, for this ARC! When I saw that this book was about a plus-size dancer, I knew I had to read it. I too am a plus-size dancer &, while I’m not dealing with the same heartbreak as Laura, I do deal with some of the same insecurities. So, I saw some of me in her.

Laura’s story held my attention from beginning to end & had me feeling all kinds of emotions. Although there were times when I wanted to shake some sense into Laura, I realize that maybe those moments were needed for her growth journey. In the beginning, I went back & forth about Roman because, who talks about themselves in third person? But, eventually, even Roman’s “third person” talk grew on me & he had me all swoons & googly-eyed. I love the progression of their relationship.

This book had humor, romance, & a dash of spice. Overall, it’s an empowering story about a woman’s resilience & journey to find the woman she once was. This book will be out October 7th & I highly recommend you read it! I look forward to more from Ms. Vargas.

Being apart of the process of this book was absolutely amazing. This story is absolutely beautiful and Laura is such a strong character. I would advise that anyone should read this and follow Laura's journey!
