Love Keeps Showing Up: Music, Messes, and Miracles

Rate this book
Oscar, Grammy, and Golden Globe recipient, platinum-selling artist. The voice of Dolores Madrigal in Encanto. Adassa invites us into her personal story of achieving her musical dreams, battling a paralyzing illness, and having faith in divine timing.

Born to immigrant Colombian parents, Adassa learned early that making it as an artist wasn’t just about talent—it was about grit, faith, and a whole lot of improvising.

Together with Gabriel Candiani, who is both her husband and her music director, Adassa paid her dues on stages in Texas and Mexico, before landing her first solo record deal. That deal catapulted her into performing alongside and collaborating with musical legends, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Daddy Yankee, Juanes, Enrique Iglesias, Carlos Vives, Pitbull, Snoop Dogg, Flo Rida, Ciara, Missy Elliott, Luis Fonsi, Don Omar, Megan Thee Stallion, and Becky G.

But when COVID left her paralyzed from the neck down, Adassa faced her greatest challenge. Unable to care for herself—let alone sing—she felt like everything was slipping away. But in those darkest moments, Gabriel and their seven children became her strength. Their family clung to faith, laughter, and the unshakable belief that God was still directing their lives.

What followed was proof that God’s timing is always perfect.

Full of inspirational music—including QR codes that link to twelve original songs—unexpected messes, and undeniable miracles, Love Keeps Showing Up is a heartfelt reminder that even when life feels out of tune, faith and family keep us singing.

Love Keeps Showing Up invites us into the personal story of Adassa, a talented vocal artist, award-winning performer, and the voice of Dolores Madrigal in Encanto. Inside these pages, she shares her incredible journey—from chasing musical dreams and overcoming paralyzing illness to embracing motherhood and holding onto faith amid life's unexpected turns.

My thoughts:
As a Disney fan, I was so excited to read this memoir and get an inside look at the life of a Disney star, especially one who brought the unforgettable song "We Don’t Talk About Bruno" to life. Adassa’s unwavering faith, resilience, and perseverance inspired me so much! Her story is a journey from adversity to remarkable achievements, marked by trust in God’s perfect timing.

This memoir beautifully highlights a life dedicated to listening to God's plan and having the courage to keep showing up for life, love, family, and creative pursuits—no matter the obstacles.

Music and faith are woven seamlessly throughout Adassa’s story, enriching every chapter. I especially love the inclusion of QR codes that link to 12 original songs by Adassa, released alongside her new album!

Such an inspiring read—truly a celebration of faith, music, and unstoppable spirit.

Wow! This book was incredible! I figured I'd enjoy it but it was so much more than what I had expected! I laughed and cried! I felt inspired! I was completely hooked on learning more about Adassa and her story. I loved her journey and finding love and following her dream. Relying on God to guide her and her husband Gabriel and their family, especially when they were going through the hard moments of life, all of the unknowns. I loved it all!

The title, Love Keeps Showing Up, was so appropriate for her story. I really enjoyed seeing how she focused on love and goodness throughout her life. The way she and her family looked at the struggles of life and how they drew closer together and did all they could to stay positive through it. And how she didn't sugarcoat the hard moments. Even though they were trying to be positive there were still emotional moments processing it all.

Her journey to voicing Dolores in the movie Encanto was truly incredible and inspiring. I was telling my family about it and we were all in tears. Sometimes our journeys don't happen as we want and hope they will but if we're open to the possibilities and doing our best life can be better than we think. And sometimes, it's just hard.

I don't want to say anything else because this is just one of those books that you truly need to read and just enjoy the journey of it. It's beautiful. It's messy. It's raw. It's real. And it's lovely! If you can't already tell, I highly recommend this book!!!

Content: Clean. There is talk of faith and hope and family and belief in God.

I received a copy from the publisher, Shadow Mountain, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

5⭐️ ARC Review: I am not one to pick up an autobiography for funsies, and to rate one 5 stars no less? Who am I? On a serious note, I actually thoroughly enjoyed this and absolutely flew through it.

Adassa is inspirational. I enjoyed learning about her background, culture, the music she sings and writes, it was all so interesting. She told her story very well and it kept me engaged. There was some repetition throughout but that didn’t bother me. It’s her story and I was here for it.

Since we share the same faith, both have a major love for music, and even have similar struggles, I deeply connected with her.

But besides this being her life story, she also shared inspirational things on faith and God’s timing. I honestly think this book was written for me. I found myself nodding my head in agreement and getting emotional at times.

I loved seeing into the real life of the person behind the character Dolores. To see the real and genuine person. What struggles she faced, which were almost insurmountable, but God kept showing up and so did her faith. A truly incredible and inspiring person who I would love to meet one day.

I loved this book so much. The writing isn’t amazing to be honest but the content was so inspiring. I find it extra meaningful reading about how she navigated a post-Covid severe health crisis as I struggled with chronic health issues from COVID. I also loved hearing about her perspective on parenting, forgiving yourself from past mistakes and shortcomings, developing your faith, and her rise to stardom/the course of her life. Interesting and inspiring read.

Loved it. I received an advanced copy from the publisher, and I’ve already ordered a copy for my daughter who is a performer. So many gems in this book about endurance and resilience in pursuing what you love and accepting a path that is not easy. I loved the elements of faith and family, as well as growth and moving forward after mistakes with more knowledge to do better. Very relatable memoir.

We’ve all heard her voice as Dolores Madrigal from Encanto…but “life doesn’t pause just because Disney calls”. Now read the story behind the voice.”

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

“My life is full of kids, opportunities, music, motherhood, and a whole lot of beautiful mayhem.” —Adassa

CAN I JUST WRITE THIS ENTIRE REVIEW IN CAPS?! Because honestly…that’s how I feel about this book.

This book HIT ME. Like, straight to the heart and stayed there. (and please never leave🤞🏼)

There is something so honest and pure about Adassa’s writing—her story, her determination, her faith. Her life isn’t picture-perfect, and she doesn’t pretend it is. It’s messy. It’s hard. It’s REAL. And she invites you into all of it.

She’s done hard things. She’s walked through trials most of us can’t even imagine. But it’s her resilience and her unwavering hope that make this story absolutely SHINE.

I’m not exaggerating when I say I feel like I could sit down and chat with her after finishing this book—like we’ve been neighbors for years. That’s how personal and connected this feels.

This book is INSPIRATIONAL. REFLECTIVE. DEEPLY PERSONAL. And completely UNPUTDOWNABLE.

And listen—while I will never audition for Disney, perform with Lin-Manuel Miranda, or headline concerts…I do understand her day-to-day life. The juggling. The motherhood. The desire to not lose yourself in the middle of it all. IT’S ALL SO REAL AND RELATABLE!

This is hands-down a Mother’s Day gift-of-the-year kind of book. Women—READ. THIS. BOOK.

It’s under 200 pages and I highlighted 273 passages…which basically means I marked up the ENTIRE thing.

If there is one nonfiction book I could convince you to take a chance on—it’s this one.

This will absolutely be in my 2026 favorites lineup.

Available tomorrow (and possibly already shipping🤗). I’ll link it in stories—but seriously, GET THIS BOOK in your hands.

It’s beautiful.
I cannot recommend it enough.

Happy Reading📚

This was such an inspiring look at the life of Adassa. Even if you don’t recognize her name, I’m sure you’ve heard her voice. She was Dolores Madrigal in Encanto and has won several awards and worked with many artists during her career.

Throughout this memoir, Adassa focused on family, faith, and music. There was something wholly riveting about her writing and I felt the lyricism and talent she possesses demonstrated from start to finish—and I loved the addition of songs from her upcoming album and how they corresponded to each chapter. I would have finished this book in one sitting if life had allowed. As it was, I read it quickly in just a couple sittings and found myself reflecting on my own experiences as I read about hers. While I was reading this book, I felt like I was meeting a kindred spirit. Her relatability and her gift for connection were standouts.

Adassa was candid, reflective, and encouraging while sharing so much about the ups and downs she has endured. She did not shy away from the messes of life, but also spoke about the many miracles she has experienced. Her story is one of hardship, but also joy and love and family. She acknowledged the hand of God in her life and how unexpected detours have led to some of the greatest moments. Even if you don’t believe in God or a higher power, there is more than coincidence in life’s timing and Adassa’s beautiful story is just one of many examples of life being even greater than we can ever imagine, especially when it doesn’t go as planned.

I really loved when she shared her journey of motherhood and felt so seen and uplifted. It was also lovely to read about the village Adassa has been surrounded by throughout her life and how others can be such wonderful friends and family who are there for you no matter what.

If you love memoirs and music, I highly recommend Love Keeps Showing Up!!!

I love a memoir about someone I know of and admire. This was different; the only thing I knew about her was that she was the voice of "We Don't talk About Bruno" on Encanto- but to read about what it took to get to that point is inspiring and delightful. Now, I feel like I know her, and I truly admire her.

The journey of adventure, faith, mistakes, dreams, adversity, and miracles kept me turning pages and in absolute awe of the positive attitude and perseverance shown by her and her husband, Gabriel. Not to mention six children and several moves around the country and world- how she does it all is a miracle in an of its self. I truly highlighted something on every page! It is so relatable and really spoke to my heart and my soul. She came to her faith through her own trials and searching- not because someone told her what to believe.

"I think of how, as a baby, I had to fight just to breathe. I've learned that nothing meaningful comes without effort, but that God meets us in our effort, not our perfection."

"I didn't realize that sometimes God's idea of 'making it' looks nothing like ours. It's funny how life reroutes us yet still somehow lands us right were we belong."

"Grace doesn't wait until we've figured it all out. It walk in unannounced, drops it's bags on our mess, and says 'Don't mind me, I'm staying.' Even when we're tired, Even when we missed the mark."

"Faith isn't just something you hold in calm seasons. Faith is what hold YOU when everything else is shaking."

If you are a fan of music, an inspirational story, or just want to feel like you can do anything- give this a read.

Thank you to Shadow Mountain Publishers for the early copy of the book.

Happy Book Birthday! Adassa! This book felt like sitting down with a friend who’s just casually telling you her life story! It’s full of laughter, chaos, and so much love! I so enjoyed getting to learn about her journey from big dreams to big stages, but also the really hard, real moments! Like her health struggles and how her faith and family carried her through when everything felt impossible. It didn’t feel polished or perfect, which made it even better! It just felt… REAL!

What made it even more fun for me is realizing how close to home her impact actually is! While talking about this book with friends and family I learned that she came to a nearby school where my cousins work/attend and sang with the students! Plus reading about her performance with the One Voice Children’s Choir with her made me realize she recorded with some of our friends’ kids! These little connections just made the whole book feel extra special and personal!

It’s one of those stories that reminds you life can be messy and unpredictable, but love (and a little music 🎶) really does keep showing up in the best ways!
Thank you SO MUCH to the author and @shadowmountianfor the advanced copy of this book! All opinions are my own.

Uplifting and inspiring true story

Love Keeps Showing Up is a heartfelt and uplifting autobiography from singer-songwriter Adassa, the voice of Dolores Madrigal in Disney’s Encanto. This is an inspiring story about perseverance, faith, and continuing forward even when life takes unexpected turns.

What makes this book stand out is Adassa’s unwavering positivity, even while facing extreme hardships. During the COVID-19 pandemic she experienced a terrifying illness that left her paralyzed from the neck down. She didn’t know if she would even survive, much less walk or sing again.

Adassa openly shares her faith as part of her healing and growth, but without feeling preachy. She also takes accountability for her past mistakes and learns from them, making her story feel authentic and relatable.

The audiobook is narrated by Adassa herself and includes several of her songs. The eBook version has QR codes that link directly to recordings of her music. 5 stars! Thanks to the publisher for an eARC to use for my review.

🎤Love Keeps Showing Up -Music, Messes, and Miracles- by Adassa

This glimpse into the life Adassa has worked so hard for was empowering. We all have our own stories and I love how, when we look for it, Love Keeps Showing Up.

Not my usual read, but I am so grateful I was given the opportunity. This truly gave me perspective, compassion, and a boost of Faith. I loved her insight and strength. I came away inspired to show more love, to make the most of life, and to look for the guidance and love surrounding us all.

Words of wisdom throughout. Thought provoking insight. Truly remarkable story.

I highlighted so much. This is one to read again and again, giving you the boost many find they need. I would highly recommend giving her story a try!

Sometimes non-fiction is hard to read. This book is the opposite of that. It feels like you got to sit down with Adassa and talk with her about life, family, love, hopes and dreams... Honestly, it's just amazing.

I loved the way the author talks about her life. She mentions her growing up years, her marriage and family, and her challenges. As well as her triumphs and the things she's learned from each of them. I learned a ton about her from what she said, but I also learned about myself and how the world works best.

This book is so amazing! It's definitely one of my favorite's I've read lately.

Love Keeps Showing Up was a good book on Adassa’s successes, trials, and faith.

I enjoyed reading about her life and story and what she went through. To get an inside glimpse of how her faith has had a huge impact on her life and career is inspiring.

This is a short book which can be read quickly if you are looking for a quick biography to read over a weekend.

I feel like at some parts of the book I struggled with the writing structure or the story going from one part to jumping to something else.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this!

Love Keeps Showing Up is a warm and inspirational memoir on the life of Adassa, from her struggles as a premature baby, to her blooming music career and other jobs like photography, and eventually as a mom to not one, but multiple children. I enjoyed how her story highlighted hard work and grit(Which you will see, she has a lot of!). Alongside her faith, it was God’s grace that carried her through both success and hardships. Even if you’re not familiar with her music or background, her book is relatable and uplifting, including her song lyrics throughout the pages.

Thank you @shadowmountainpub for the gifted book!

Love Keeps Showing Up by Adassa is about the vocal artist who played Dolores in Encanto, and shares her journey of “music, messes, and miracles.”

It’s a heartfelt reflection of the chaos of her life and its unexpected joys and struggles. Her path to being cast by Disney in a hugely successful animated feature isn’t what you’d expect, and her stories of living off the beaten path are interesting. I enjoyed reading it!

Ugh. I’m so sad. I hate giving someone’s life story such a low rating. But the book lacked depth. It gave me testimony night vibes but focused so much on the “sunshines and rainbows,” that I had a hard time appreciating her story. When she mentioned her experience as a teen, I was hopeful that we would finally get some depth or relatability, butttt nope. It lasted a couple pages and that was it. Had a hard time finding anything remotely relatable to her story—- and I’m a Puerto Rican in Utah.
