As someone who works closely with entrepreneurs to help them grow their businesses, I’m always looking for resources that help leaders align their vision with how they actually show up for their team and community. The Elevated Leader delivers on that need.

This isn’t just about being more confident, it’s about being more intentional. Laurie Maddalena offers clear and grounded strategies for navigating the parts of leadership most people avoid: giving feedback, setting expectations, and having honest conversations without letting things fester. Her approach feels especially relevant for thought leaders and small business owners who wear multiple hats and are building trust through every interaction.

What stood out most was how the book connects personal clarity with team outcomes. If you're trying to lead a mission-driven business, this book gives you the structure to coach your team, stay focused on what matters, and build a culture that doesn’t rely on micromanagement.

Laurie Maddalena delivers a refreshingly practical leadership guide that tackles the three areas most managers avoid—but desperately need to master: coaching, accountability, and difficult conversations. Rather than drowning readers in theory, Maddalena offers clear frameworks, checklists, and prompts you can use the same day with your team.

What distinguishes this book is its usability. The coaching guidance is grounded and specific—how to structure 1:1s, how to uncover the real issue, and how to move from soothing to solving. The accountability sections emphasize expectations, ownership, and follow-through without slipping into micromanagement. And the material on tough conversations provides language that feels direct yet respectful—ideal for feedback, role changes, or performance gaps. These elements align with the broader “Elevated Leader Model,” which centers on confidence, clarity, and intention, and addresses common leadership “saboteurs” that hold managers back.

She writes like a seasoned coach who has sat in the manager’s chair and knows the time pressures. The result is a toolkit you’ll actually open—a field manual for frontline leaders and new managers, and a strong refresher for seasoned executives. Bottom line: if you need real scripts, better 1:1s, and a culture where expectations are clear and people do their best work, this is a smart, immediately useful read.

Modernizing leadership practices – changing the workplace culture

Maryland author Laurie Maddalena, a certified executive coach, a leadership development consultant, and a professional keynote speaker, has shared her expertise in her publications - WOMEN WHO SHINE, WOMEN WHO EMPOWER and now THE ELEVATED LEADER. Reading this book is an extraordinary experience, filled with not only fine coaching instruction, but also with memorable quotations worth sharing: ‘Achieving something great doesn’t happen by chance – it takes consistent effort, daily discipline, sacrifice, and dedication. As leaders we must recognize that this is true for us, too. The work of leadership is never finished.’ ‘Exceptional outcomes don’t happen by accident; they’re built through effort, discipline, and intention.’

As Laurie defines her purpose – ‘I believe we can have a thriving professional and personal life, and part of that is cultivating workplaces where employees feel supported, and where they can bring their best selves to work every day. I teach leaders strategies and tools for managing a team at work, while also having the time and space to enjoy life outside of work.’ Depth of character as well as superb coaching skills places Laurie Maddalena in the top tier. This is a first class contribution to elevated leading!

The Art of Leading Closely

I love books where the author delves into sharing part of their professional development and, in doing so, clearly breaks down all the information for us.

This book is super interesting; I believe it's useful not only for business but for any type of leadership. I really liked how the author compares the old ways of working with the new ways of leading a team that have changed over the years. With this, the author provides us with new concepts and strategies to create a sustainable, high-trust team.

I found the comparative charts presented in this reading extremely useful, as well as the concept itself of what the "neo-leader" comes to show us, which is essentially about being close to your team and helping them grow individually, encouraging them to contribute their own ideas and asking questions that drive independent thought. I also appreciated how the author presents "The Six Leadership Saboteurs" as real obstacles to achieving successful work synergy.

What I liked most about the book is that it encourages the true leader to delegate, trust, and be more involved and closer to their team, instead of just giving orders and expecting results.

I recommend this book to those who are newly leading a team or those who have many years of experience and are looking to try small changes that will become big allies in the future.

I've been a business editor for more than 25 years, and when I start to read something new—whether it's an article, book, blog, or social media post—I'm looking for copy that sparkles. That's what good writing does. It sparkles.

What I mean is this: the content flows, is easy to read, makes me feel something, and sounds like a real person. In other words, it feels good to read. I've been reading Laurie Maddalena's writing for more than a decade, and it always sparkles, especially her new book, The Elevated Leader: Boost Your Confidence and Transform Your Team by Mastering Coaching, Accountability, and Difficult Conversations. Laurie knows how to tell a good story and seamlessly weaves in the bigger lessons about leadership. We've all slogged through business books with dry, obtuse, boring writing. The fundamental lessons may have been helpful, but boy, what a struggle. You will not find that with The Elevated Leader.

One reason I find Laurie's writing so compelling is how much of herself she shares in her work. She is very relatable, sharing stories of fails and successes as a working mother and small business owner. When a lot of business writing focuses on theory, Laurie backs up her theories with practical tips and advice. While reading the chapter on the Six Leadership Saboteurs, I recognized my weaknesses right away, as well as the weaknesses of former bosses. Were I still working with that "Lack of Self-Awareness" leader, I would have the right language, thanks to Laurie, to address the issues with him.

Laurie writes about how leadership has changed dramatically over the past few decades and how the old styles of command and control no longer work. "At its core, true leadership is about service," she writes. It's about connecting, coaching, and developing. If this sounds time-consuming, that's because it is. That's one of the challenges most organizations face. Many leaders are still promoted because they are technical experts, but those technical skills are not the skills that will help them lead. If that describes you (or someone on your staff), this book will serve as a guide, offering both opportunities for introspection and reflection and practical tips you can implement immediately.

If you are a leader, whether brand new or seasoned, you need this book. If you are a development or training professional, you need to include this book in your leadership training programs.

Leading from trust and empathy

Reading this book made me realize that being a good leader is not only about giving orders or reaching goals, but about learning how to connect with people. Many times, we believe that leadership means having all the answers, but it is actually more about listening, guiding, and creating a space where others can grow. The author reminded me that having difficult conversations is not a sign of weakness, but a reflection of commitment to the team. I also understood that responsibility and coaching are not extra tasks, they are essential parts of building trust. Leading with empathy, recognizing mistakes, and celebrating achievements makes work more human and inspiring. When a leader focuses on understanding others, communication improves, collaboration becomes natural, and every person feels valued. True leadership begins when trust replaces fear and empathy becomes the foundation of every decision.

Learning to be a good leader

The Elevated Leader, by Maddalena, is a fantastic resource for anyone who wants to be a good leader but often stumbles along the way. With clear, real-world examples, concise definitions, and practical advice, the reader will realize that being a good leader is achievable and that what's written here isn't just theory.
I particularly appreciate the importance it places on dialogue between the leader and their team, which fosters a better work environment.
Another important aspect the book addresses is the techniques it explains for making employees more productive and helping them reach their full potential, all based on the principles of respect and good communication.
It's written in an easy-to-understand way, without complex or difficult-to-comprehend terms. This book should be considered required reading; it focuses not only on the leader but also on their environment.

Loved this book!

The Elevated Leader is a significant call to action for leaders who want to bridge their personal development with organizational development. It addresses what is possible for leadership development, which extends beyond management competencies to emotional intelligence, mindfulness, and self-awareness. The book includes actual tools and reflective exercises to help the reader link purpose to performance, motivating leaders to lead from a more authentic and compassion-focused space.
The distinction of this book is on development from the 'inside-out', that is, conscious development ensures conscious impact. Maddalena uses vivid stories and research to demonstrate that personal leadership begins with self-discovery, self-awareness, and presence. This read offers an invigorating and empowering framework for leadership rooted in clarity, empathy, and conscious action and is a timely read for the workplace today.

What does it mean to be an “elevated leader?” Essentially, it means leading in a way that’s fair, honest, and compassionate. You don’t need to be ruthless to succeed as a leader, and there are proven ways you can earn the trust of your team. Many of them are explained in detail in this book.

If you read this book and take its advice to heart, you should be able to lead in a way that makes your team comfortable. You will also avoid burnout by never creating unnecessary stress for yourself. This matters more than you might imagine. Many leaders in the business world find themselves dealing with health problems brought on by their habits. You can avoid all of that if you purposefully become an elevated leader, and you will also make it much more likely that your company and endeavors will succeed.

A Roadmap to Unshakable Leadership...

In the storm of modern leadership, Laurie Maddalena’s The Elevated Leader feels like finding true north in a spinning compass. She writes not from a pedestal, but from the trenches—drawing on her own missteps and victories to chart a path that’s refreshingly real. No jargon. No fluff. Just grounded wisdom for leaders who’d rather roll up their sleeves than talk in circles.

Maddalena reminds us that real leadership doesn’t thunder from authority; it grows quietly from self-honesty, from the courage to look inward before pointing the way forward. This book doesn’t just talk about rising higher—it hands you the grip. With stories that sting and steps that stick, it turns leadership from theory into heartbeat. If you’re running on fumes and ready to feel the spark again, this might just be your ignition. Highly recommended.

Another level

These types of books are fascinating, especially because they make me reflect on how brilliant some people can be. I think the author is a remarkable human being, with an ability that comes not only from a very marked experience but also from an intelligence that is on another level.

Despite not being a financial expert and never having been involved in those areas, I understood a great deal of the analysis presented, and I really loved being able to understand it. The advice for good financial management is spectacularly practical, and the way problems are addressed to deliver tailor-made solutions is simply spectacular.
The book is very interesting, not only for those who have to manage large-scale projects, but also for people interested in acquiring structure and order.

The extra help that leaders need
If you’re a person who leads a team, it’s always important to keep on learning techniques to manage heterogeneous groups. Laurie Maddalena has penned “The Elevated Leader” to help readers find ways to overcome obstacles during leadership. Her experience has given Laurie the necessary tools to lead groups effectively and she puts into words her expertise in these words. So, there is a lot to learn about leadership, from skills and strategies to organise yourself to skills to facilitate challenging conversations with style and coherence.
It’s a clear, well-developed guide that contains practical and effective information for leaders. It gives the extra help that any leader needs to create a powerful, positive and thriving team. Without a doubt, I recommend it.

What Real Leadership Looks Like

This book helped me think more concretely about the kind of leader I want to become as I finish my studies in law. Maddalena’s guidance feels practical because she breaks leadership down into behaviors you can use in real situations, making the idea of leading much easier to understand. It also reinforced something I’ve believed for a long time, that leadership isn’t limited to corporate roles or business titles. You find leaders in many parts of life, wherever people step up to guide others. The chapters on difficult conversations and on why not everyone is meant to lead pushed me to reconsider the real weight behind supporting people. The focus on clarity stood out to me the most, since clear communication is what keeps a group aligned and gives a leader real credibility.

I started reading The Elevated Leader looking for tools to improve as a leader, but I ended up finding a very good guide to leading with intention, confidence, and humanity. It's definitely one of those books that transforms you from within. Laurie Maddalena has an approach that resonated deeply with me. She speaks from the experience of someone who has lived through the insecurities and doubts we face when we take on the responsibility of leading others. What I liked most was that the book includes real-life examples and advice that can be applied in everyday life, as well as a very interesting concept of Confident Coaching, which teaches you how to confidently support your team, helping people discover their potential. Recommended.

A book that leaves its mark.

Unlike many traditional guides, this book does not limit itself to giving abstract advice or generic formulas. Maddalena invites readers to reflect on their own leadership style and develop a more conscious, intentional, and empathetic mindset. Her approach combines strategic clarity with personal authenticity, showing that a good leader not only directs, but also inspires, listens, and builds relationships based on trust.

One of the most valuable aspects of the book is its balance between theory and practice. Through real-life examples and applicable strategies, the author teaches how to handle difficult conversations, remain calm in the midst of change, and foster a work environment where people feel engaged and valued.

Amazing in every way

As the new leader of a team, I have had to face new scenarios that I had not anticipated. Thankfully, I came across this book, which has made me feel liberated in many ways, as I found someone who has addressed all my current needs as if they had read my mind. The author is very clear and precise, knows a great deal about the subject, and does not hold back when it comes to giving valuable and constructive advice.

The book is designed to give you a list of steps to follow, but also options, like a catalog, for dealing with the different commitments that come with leading teams, so you don't get overwhelmed by everything that entails and can try to continue living a normal, balanced life. The author has a new loyal follower.

Laurie Maddalena addresses difficult subjects. One of those is handling challenging conversations. Maddalena shows how one can overcome the challenge and convert the conversation into a positive and productive experience. She also demonstrates how to train employees to shine and be happy in the workplace. I'm passionate about leadership books. I believe that if more people focused on being good leaders, companies would face far fewer problems and achieve their goals. That's why I recommend this book. After many years of experience, the author has created a framework and basic principles to help you become a better leader and achieve undeniable success. It's a very comprehensive book that I shared with all my colleagues, and we all found great value in its pages. We also read real-life experiences with which we strongly identified and understood what we might have done wrong in those situations. This book became like a guide in my company and I have read it several times to be better every day.

A must read!

Reading leadership books written by women honestly feels completely inspiring and totally worth it.

I think Laurie does an excellent job in this book, not only explaining the theory and how to lead by inspiring others through trust, feedback, and motivation, but also in the way she develops the book itself, making it very easy for readers to follow and absorb.

It’s a quick and easy read, full of real examples and reflections that make you think about your own leadership journey. It definitely includes powerful tools to strengthen your leadership skills, connect better with others, and help you stand out from others in your everyday life.

I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to grow personally and professionally.

Enhace your live

This book feels very relevant at this moment in my life, and I believe it is also valuable for any young person who faces many demands every day. We live in a world where competition, urgency, and social media make people compare themselves constantly, often losing confidence in who they are. That lack of confidence can make it difficult to feel and act like a true leader.

This read gives useful advice and tools, and encourages the reader to have deep and honest conversations with themselves, not only to find answers but to make real changes that last over time. It also helps build self-confidence and strengthen the purpose and legacy each person wants to create in life.

Being an exceptional leader takes a lot of work, but it is attainable, especially with the help of this book. A great leader never avoids responsibility and confrontation, like a mediocre leader who lacks the confidence to command but does not embarrass their employees. This book shares a lot of helpful information but does not overwhelm. It shares numerous ways to provide constructive criticism. As a leader, giving constructive feedback will help boost morale and their respect for you and empower them as functioning team members. Words matter to you and the people you work with, and you set the tone for the workplace. This book has a lot of helpful tips on being the best leader you can be.

Enhace your Life

I want to focus on one of the points I liked the most about this book, and that does not only apply to leadership, but to every aspect of life, including the relationship we have with ourselves: the importance of having difficult conversations. Many times we avoid these conversations because it is hard for us to face uncomfortable or sensitive topics. However, this book clearly explains that this skill is not only about talking with others, but also about learning to speak honestly with ourselves.

The more we learn to face difficult conversations and the less fear we have of conflict, the more freedom we will experience. This will allow us to work more consistently and consciously toward our goals, our dreams, and the person we truly are.

I'd say you must read this book!

Absolutely, I'd say you must read this book! I’ll be for sure recommending it to my group of friends. It's not your everyday self-help guide, nor is it promising a mountain of cash overnight as I’ve seen in other books. It surpasses mere leadership, really, showing you how to develop yourself holistically, a complete 360-degree approach. I adored the author's writing style, she leads you smoothly through every tool. Communication? That spoke to me so loudly; it's a field I've forever strived for, also because I see it as a base for life, especially career-wise. What's more, it's a woman sharing all of this, what turns to be so empowering to me.

Like empires, companies can rise and fall. However, some endure for centuries, and great leadership is the secret. Great leaders can motivate employees, help others see and believe in a vision, and lead innovation within the company. This was the case with author Maddalena, who over time transformed her leadership style and reached new levels of executive effectiveness.
Page after page, this author recounts her journey as a leader, from her beginnings to the present day. I truly believe that this author pours a lot of her emotions into her writing. As the reader progresses through the book, they feel what this author wanted to express. Certainly a 5-star book!

What I really liked about The Elevated Leader by Laurie Maddalena is that it feels very real and different from other leadership books.

I enjoyed how the book talks about confidence and communication. The part about difficult conversations stood out to me the most because it teaches you how to handle tough situations calmly and with respect, which isn’t always easy.

Another thing that really stuck with me was the part about Emotional Intelligence, learning to understand and manage your emotions to build better relationships at work. It made me realize how important it is to be aware of how I react when things get stressful and how that can affect the people around me.

Success requires some strategies and skills. This book is an amazing example of how to develop skills like focus, energy, and task orientation. As a new leader, I was suggested this book because it is an honest approach to understanding leadership and provides the tools needed to do it. I like how she focuses on the benefits of training and providing tools, not because the leader gets the position, they know everything. Her method is very successful and practical; effectiveness is part of it, and while reading, you can start reflecting on your approach, how to make it better, and learn every day. It is a book that will benefit anyone, you will learn about leadership in a successful way.
