Do fallen angels really fly? Does karma really exist? The Harper family is becoming impatient and believing it to be untrue. Just as an unwelcome guest appears at Lyla and Everett's big engagement party, the pieces they picked up fall apart and scatter in the wind along with the virtue that they clutch onto... hope.

Lyla and Everett's love is tested and taken to the edge of an abyss of uncertainty as someone's life hangs in the balance all while the dots start to connect between Michael Thomas and someone he thought he ridded the world from. Will going back to Chicago tear them apart when a person from Lyla's past reemerges from the depths of her heart, making her reconsider her future?

People hide. They cheat, lie and they hold secrets in their souls. Will the two new lovers be resilient enough when the eye of the storm approaches the heart of Rigdon and follows them to the big city of Chicago?

Wow Mary really pulled it out the bag with this one.

We pick up at the engagement party where Michael makes an appearance and Lyla does a runner.

The story continues but this time told from the main characters Lyla, Garrett, Everett, Michael and everything start to unfold.

Lyla and Everett are having major problems with there relationship. So much doubt between them and secrets. Will they recover from the past?

My heart went out to Garrett with Brooklyn but so glad what he did to Michael for her. What an evil bastard he is.

Who will Lyla chose after a blast from the past returns. Cant wait to find out!

So I received a pre release copy of this book ty so much Mary.

As we no lyla's story has been full of heartbreak & struggles book 6 is no exception.

We revisit lyla, Everett, Garrett & and Mr nasty (Michael Thomas)

Layla's struggles continue as again she is faced with the devil. Michael continues his vendetta but this time lyla is not the only person whom he breaks.

You will need a box of tissues and a large box of chocolates to get through this truly beautifully written, heartbreak of a story. Mary again has pushed the boundaries. You will be left begging for answers. Will any one get there hea??

Thank you so much Mary for writing this story and sharing it. P.s I want to be in your head space while the next is in the process of being wrote haha <3 xx

OMG. I have really enjoyed this story so far. My heart is breaking for these characters. When a story can make me feel like I am, it is definately a great read for me. I can't wait for the last 2 books in this series.

They had a love built from tragedy. Lyla and Everett’s love is tested one final time in the concluding book. The past meets the present with evil lurking in every dark corner. Expect the unexpected.
The final book concludes all the loose end with Michael and other supporting characters.
Lyla continues to fight for herself making strong stable choices. She has a body to protect.

Overall:
This is an extremely long saga. Mary delayed the conclusion stretching the drama. My poor heart. I’m sorry but I had to to skim through the last 3 books as I was too eager to finish this mega series.
Lyla’s worst enemy is her over imaginative mind. She sees the worst in people, but you can’t blame her she has trust issues. This character was an ugly mess. Her character had my emotions run the gamut.
I’m glad that it’s over. I got way more than I expected from Lyla’s character. She was a magnetic to trauma and bad men.

Where to begin...

So as I've probably stated in my precious reviews, before you read this, you really need to read the other books in the series. Otherwise, you'll be lost and won't understand why this book is so heart-shattering and full of emotional rollercoasters.

I haven't really talked about the villain much in my previous reviews, so I will take the time to do it now. Because this needs to be addressed.

Michael Thomas is the most evil and cruel person out there. He is beyond manipulative, demanding, and always get his way. He's messed up. As you read you will literally want him to die in the most inhumane way possible, even if you are one who does not believe in violence. Because that's how terrible he is.

But he's realistic. And it's really scary to think that there are people like him out there. Mary E. Palmerin is freaking brilliant. She has created this character who is able to cause mayhem in not just Lyla's life, but in the entire Harper family's lives as well. Michael Thomas is genius. He can get away with it all. But it's only a matter of time...

Like I said, it's realistic. So that being said, the reaction of some of the members of the Harper family are realistic as well... (go read Armored [#4] if you have not already. What are you waiting for???)

I cannot stress this enough: the lives of all these characters intertwine in a way you never saw coming. And it works.

Lyla is conflicted. She is hurt. She is angry. She wants out. When you end up being as abused and torn apart as Lyla, the past ceases to go away. It's hard to move on and love yourself. And most importantly, it's hard to believe that there are finally people who care and want to fix you and treat you well. So when something happens and you take it in the wrong way, rational thoughts like "Oh, maybe I should figure out what's really going on" dissipate from your mind and you automatically go back to the way you have always perceived yourself as: a piece of shit who doesn't deserve anything good.

I was an emotional mess while reading this book.

Mary E. Palmerin's style of writing is beautiful. In a way, it's poetic. It flows beautifully and has a way of affecting the way you see life as a whole. Her writing is like fluid, it's like water moving down a peaceful stream. I mean, I finished this book in a day and I was left with my mouth open. When I eat food, I eat and even if I'm bloated, I want more. Just like food, I wanted more from Palmerin: I wasn't satisfied and greedily wanted more.

Amazing book. It leaves you hanging in the right place and makes you painstakingly wait for the conclusion of this story. This story is amazing and affects all.

Just when you thought Michael can’t get any more evil, you read Surpassing and find out just how much of a devil he is. We have watched Lyla from book one in this series try to overcome the darkness and horrible events that have happened to her. She fought for her right to leave the small town and go to college. Then she struggled to get the perfect job only to find her boss Michael was a demon on two legs and she never did escape the brutal abuse. As Everett walked into her life we begin to hope that she would find her happy ending, only to see the connection he had with Michael. Is there any place on Earth Lyla can go and just be safe and happy? Well she decides to give the small town in Kansas another try.
Hoping that being back with her parents, sister and brother will be enough to heal her broken soul she soon realizes that the darkness will follow. Michael goes after her, willing and ready to destroy whatever she holds dear to prove his point that no one walks away from him. In the process of his madness he will succeed in destroying the important people and relationships she values, but the question is does he have enough to break her yet?
Everett goes through a strange awakening in this book and I think the story takes a twist we aren’t expecting. People from early in the series comes back to make their presence known and that also will change the direction Lyla is determined to follow. What was once calm, maybe the first time in her life, we see is only the calm before the biggest storm she will ever face. Lyla can deal with the damage done to her, but can she possibly deal with the damage done to her family?
Mary Palmerin isn’t an author you can predict, being in her mind must be a chaotic ride if her stories are any indication. She had me gasping for air a few times and totally threw me a curve ball with one scene that left me in tears. She writes this story in a way that doesn’t leave me wanting to scream that this is enough, let Lyla find her ending but instead I am more determined in my desire to have Lyla find the end to the cruelty she suffers from, not only at the hands of other but by her own thinking sometimes.
The ending is a cliff hanger and I want more ASAP, I need to see what choice she is going to make in light of the new options she has before her. Just when you think she can’t possibly be more confused, the author throws in another chance for happiness, or is it another chance to have your heart shattered? You have to read this book to decide.

As of this very moment I'm caught up with Mary's Scars and Sorrow series and I honestly don't know what to do next with my life. There's a gaping hole in my soul.

Surpassing picks up where book three essentially left off, giving us glimpses of the story line through Lyla, Everett, Garrett and Michael's eyes. There's beauty, suspense, heart ache, sorrow all wrapped into one amazing story line in this book. I'm absolutely loving how Mary has written her villain, absolutely psychotic and I'm obsessed with her character development of this dark soul.

I'm sad that Everett's secrets came back to bite him in the ass but it serves him right. Honesty is the best trait you can bring to a relationship.

I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of Betraying :)

Surpassing is a great installment to the Scars and Sorrow Saga....

Lyla and Everett have gone through so much in this series you just want them to finally be fully together on the same page. Of course stupid (blank) Michael Thomas shows up to be worse villain ever in history. What this man thinks is incredible and what details you get in this story about him will literally think what a (blank)

This series is quite a dark angst read but what a freaking ride of emotions. Especially this one. My jaw just dropped at the ending literally. Lots of emotions and strongly recommend reading this series in order and be aware it isn't a cutesy type story ;)

Wow. Lylas story continues in this tragic series.
Her life has never been easy.
Actually that is an understatement.
It's been terrible
Loss
Life
Freedom
Pain
So many words can describe her story.
But you could only truly know what it's like if you read it for yourself.
Fantastic continuance of a well written story.
