Hanuman: The Eternal Devotee by Amar Chitra Katha!
Amar Chitra Katha is a beloved, iconic Indian comic series that serves as an essential, engaging introduction to Indian mythology, history, and folklore for children and adults. Founded in 1967, it is praised for its authentic, meticulously researched stories, colorful illustrations, and simple language.
Hanuman: The Eternal Devotee is a premium harbound special edition with many titles. ‘Hanuman’ scripted by Anant Pai tells his entire role in Ramayana. ‘Bheema and Hanuman’ a story told in the Mahabharata, tells of the meeting of the two mighty sons of Vayu. ‘Mahiravana’ tells of Ravana’s son who kidnaps Rama and Lakshmana to the nether world. ‘Sundara Kand’ tells the story of Hanuman’s search for Sita in Lanka.
Call me ignorant, but I hadn’t realised that Hanuman was sent to obtain Vishalyakarini herb and not just Sanjeevani herb for the wounded Lakshmana. Hanuman’s appearance in the Mahabharata was also completely lost on my memory. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover the tale of ‘Mahiravana’, Ravana’s son, who appears in the Krittivasi Ramayan, a 15th century rendition of Ramayan, composed by Bengali poet Krittibas Ojha.
Beautifully compiled with expressive, vibrant visuals and captivating storytelling, this collection is a keeper.
