"What sprouted were prayers for the future. We must not let them die out."
It’s not a grand farewell. It’s not a dramatic finale. It’s a gentle plea that is rooted in soil, in tenderness, in hope. Every act of kindness, every seed of peace planted, is a prayer we leave behind. Even if the dream doesn’t last forever, it matters that it was dreamed at all. Peace, however fragile, is worth the struggle.
I get that much, but I feel empty as hell. Einar, brother, may your soul and everyone else's rest in peace... I couldn't take his departure. But maybe this emptiness isn’t a void. Maybe it’s the stillness that follows a long, hard storm. The ache of letting go. This is proof that endings, even hopeful ones, can still break your heart. Let me lay down and contemplate. Thank you for this journey.

English review: "Vinland Saga" has come to an end, and I can say it is one of the best manga series ever written. The final story arc focuses on the founding of the Vinland colony and on the interactions with Native Americans — the Norse attempting to communicate with them, live together, and establish trade relations. Unfortunately, cultural differences and, most of all, the outbreak of diseases brought by Europeans, which decimate the native population, inevitably lead to conflict. In recent years, there has been much discussion about how Makoto Yukimura would choose to end the story — whether he would opt for a historically accurate conclusion or a more optimistic one. In reality, the colony founded by Thorfinn in America did not survive. Personally, I liked the solution Yukimura chose, which brought a satisfying close to the narrative: . One of the most memorable moments in this arc is when the shaman of the Native American tribe has a vision. He is shown how their lands will change with the arrival of the white man, the climax being the vision of the nuclear tests at Alamogordo. For me, that scene was fascinating. I would have liked Yukimura to give us some updates on certain characters from previous arcs; unfortunately, many of them never reappear. True, their stories were, to some extent, concluded, but a few panels in the final chapter would have been a welcome farewell. Thorfinn’s transformation from a revenge-driven youth into a committed pacifist who lives by the motto “I have no enemies” will remain unforgettable. I’m glad the series’ popularity has helped spread, even a little, the philosophy of peace and forgiveness among young anime and manga fans. In the end, although it is clear that the real Thorfinn could not have held moral principles so close to modern ideals, the fact that he chose to sail to America — in an era when Vikings earned their glory by raiding across Europe — suggests that perhaps he, too, dreamed of a better world. Maybe there is a grain of truth in this story told more than a millennium after the historical figure’s death. With this thought, Yukimura closed his series, so I wanted to end my review the same way.
Vinland Saga is one of the greatest stories I’ve ever experienced. While the final chapters felt slightly underwhelming compared to the incredibly high standard Yukimura-sensei had set throughout the series, the conclusion was still deeply satisfying. The ending wasn’t perfect, but it was meaningful, fitting, and stayed true to the heart of the story.
All in all, I feel honored to have been part of this voyage. Vinland Saga is a masterpiece that will stay with me, and I know it will remain one of the best manga I’ve ever read for the rest of my life. It also gives me hope in these dark times—that peace is attainable. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but someday we will reach it. We are still on the "Thousand-year Voyage" that Thorfinn started.
🔥 Volume 29 – The Shadow of the Old World (Chapters 207–213)
This volume is quiet — and devastating. The settlers’ fragile peace begins to shatter. Misunderstandings and cultural clashes escalate. You can feel the weight of history pressing down: all the blood Thorfinn escaped is trying to find him again.
There’s no grand villain here, just human fear. And that’s what makes it tragic.
The best part of Volume 29 is Thorfinn’s reaction. He doesn’t break. He doesn’t lash out. He grieves. You can see how much he’s grown — the boy who once stabbed without hesitation now prays for those who harm him.
Every conversation with the native tribe hits like a drumbeat — slow, emotional, and painfully real. Yukimura’s message is clear: even the purest dream can’t erase centuries of human instinct.
By the final chapters, Vinland still stands… but barely. You can feel the peace slipping away, and yet Thorfinn refuses to give up. It’s an ending filled with quiet defiance — not victory, but commitment.
Thus ends the beloved and respected seinen saga of legend, now possessing a reputation of legend itself. I will not lie, the ending felt...anticlimactic. Of course, one may see the rush written on the wall, but even with that in mind, that does feel, well, appropriate. It was never going to have a clean ending, we all knew that, but it picks up the pieces it can and moves forward, head held high. Unlike the arc 2, which is of course in its entirety one of the finest works of literature ever produced, this final arc may not have held its ground all the way through, and it pains me to rate it so low. But it's just for this final stretch, of course, which is frankly more of an epilogue anyway. For Vinland Saga remains and will remain essential reading for anyone interested in literature. Yes! Literature, not just manga. Seeing it as anything less does the critic more disservice than this fine work.
what an incredible ending to a two decade long series. the tale of thorfinn's journey of reconciliation and pacifism was an awfully difficult one; his way of begetting violence through peace and facing cruelty in almost every situation or goal he finds himself in. the morals, the messages of his journey drives through that running theme of war; war never changes; despite the developement of life and people and the bringing of new, positive change, humans are fundamentally preceeded by their natural, primal selves: conflict, and therefore violence- blind to the futility of its consequences yet finding only comfort in it. following thorfinn through his entire life of vengeance, pain, sadness, contempt, and stagnation, flourishing into a beautifully written story of atonement, hope, selflessness, love, and peace, when he once again remembers the words of his father..
and so another manga finishes. vinland saga will always be a story close to my heart, started reading it in first year and to compare who I am and how this story has grown in its philosophy of what Thorfin set out to acomplish with his thousand year voyage, and what he gained and lost. Just wow. All the fights, the art work, every single panel being painstakingly drawn to perfection, Yukimura's faces and anatomy r out of this world. The final chapters were phenomenal, a display of human nature and that last chapter, wow. I am definitely collecting the Deluxe volumes and any media Yukimura next releases, if any, cos Vinland Saga is one of the best stories out there.
“I have no enemies” - Thorfinn, Son of Thors Getting to the end of this masterpiece felt like losing a part of my life that ive held so dear to me. This story not only changed how i view life but also changed me as a person. Thorfinn - the greatest protagonist I’ve ever had the pleasure to read about - will forever be a character who inspires me now and future. His development from a revenged driven boy to a true warrior who aspires to become a better person is one that will always amaze me no matter how many times i rewatch the show and read the manga.
PEAK FICTION, hopefully season 3 of the anime comes out soon i really want to see certain scenes animated.
Since I didn't write any reviews for any of the prior volumes, I will put down all my thoughts here. This story was so beautiful and gut wrenching but I think that's what life truly is. Almost a thousand years ago and man is still the same. You may see them change like Thorfinn, you may take action in ends for the means like Canute, or you will succumb to it all like Einar. From xenophobia to sexism, this saga shows how deeply hatred is rooted in man. This manga will forever remind me, "I have no enemies" and how that same struggle persists today. I cried like a baby at the end, thank you for writing this.
"Why do these adventurers travel to the ends of the earth? For the Icelandic trader Thorfinn Karlsfeni, it would have been better to focus on continental Europe in search of riches. He could have even made a name for himself as a Viking. But he decided to venture into the New World. Why? For what purpose?"
A bittersweet yet beautiful ending for this amazing story. I love Vinland Saga and it is one of my favorite anime/manga. I loved Thorfinn’s journey and the themes of forgiveness, loss and rebirth of one’s self, and peace. This story changed my life and I love the characters so much. I learned a lot as well and I appreciate all the love and research put into this. The panel with Thorfinn, Gudrid, Karli, and the baby was the perfect way to end the story. Hope and life always perseveres. Thank you 💙
Elveda Vinland!
I am so emotional after reading this. The way I cried for Einar. This whole series is just fantastic and is probably my favorite completed series. I was wishing for a happy ending but this one is so much more realistic
