This book was rough going for me. It's dark and explicitly violent, exposing shocking cruelty and abuse. But my rating is not based on my visceral reaction to this story because the author is VERY clear in her preface that Rotten is a "dark dystopian horror romance" and that the MCs "go through some heavy situations" to get their HEA.
The MCs are precious, and my heart broke for them repeatedly, but the love and trust were too insta. Charon and Hector spend a couple weeks together before they're all in. There's almost no relationship building.
Everything happens so quickly ... too quickly. The story is 80% action/violence/gore, 20% romance.
The scene at the prison compound where Charon and Hector have sex, both knocking on death's door, weak and injured, in the middle of danger and chaos, was just rifuckingdiculous.
My biggest gripe, however, is the complete lack of world building. That's not on Bree Wiley alone, but WTH were these authors thinking? Nothing about this world makes an iota of sense. We're just kind of thrown into the middle of the fray with no explanation.
In Bad Blood, the MCs were isolated so it was much easier to believe. That's not the case here, and the lack of any relevant societal backstory bugged me.
Also, the "twist" about the "judge" was obvious early on. I wanted to be wrong, but I wasn't.
The epilogue was happy, I guess? But also strangely melancholy and devoid of any placement in a larger context.

Come oooon, this book was insane! 🤯🔥 It felt like I was watching a freaking movie—no dull moments at all. It gripped me from the first page to the last. 🥹 And yes… I read it in one sitting. Addictive as hell. 😲
Plus, Nyx? 🐦⬛ She’s the character I didn’t even know I needed. 🖤 Her epilogue made me sob like a baby. 🥹🖤 I love when authors give a voice to animals—it’s so necessary sometimes. 😭🖤
And that plot twist? Nope. Didn’t see it coming. When it hit, my jaw was on the damn floor. 😲 I honestly wasn’t expecting things to turn out the way they did—and that made it even better. Bravo, ma’am! 👏
Things don’t start off well between Hector and Charon, but somehow, they make it work. Charon doesn’t speak and Hector can’t read—couldn’t be more complicated 😅—but they find a way to communicate, and that was one of my favorite parts. 🥹💙 Watching them fall for each other was everything. 🥹💙
Ugh, I can’t recommend Rotten enough. The writing is exceptional as always. You’re in for a ride with this book—add it to your TBRs, besties! 🥰💖

Ohhhh yesss! This is the type of dystopian, zombie, apocalyptic romance book I wanted! This was so good, I just couldn’t put it down. The plot was so entertaining but also full of emotions. I fell in love with both MMCs; I loved how soft their love was, and both of their storylines were just so heartbreaking and I just wanted something good to happen to them. It was such an addictive story, and I loved every second of it.
“I know our story isn’t like the ones inside these pages anymore. This isn’t a tragedy. Our lighthouse that we’ve grown to love will probably never be perfect. This book might fall apart before we finish reading it. But the life we’re building—the one we chose, the one we bled for… that’ll stay. Just like these tattered pages and the photos Hector keeps on the wall, this place won’t forget us, even if the rest of the world does. Not while our hands have touched it. Not while our love lives on.”
The plot and writing were really good, but I didn’t expect anything less from this author. The world built around this prison and the circumstances the MMCs found themselves in were so well done that it felt like I was watching a TV show. There wasn’t a dull or calm moment in this book until the last chapter, and I love that—it got me invested in the characters, it got me hooked on this crazy red rain world. I think this book made me appreciate even more the fact that it’s not a normal zombie apocalypse book, because these are not the common zombies we know. It’s a different take, and I really liked that. Also, in the first book I couldn’t completely grasp the concept of the rain and the carriers and all of that, but now I think I do, which made me even more invested in it.
“Prisoners pour from their cells, half-starved but thirsty, eager for blood. They called us monsters, treated us like beasts. Now they’ll see what monsters really look like.”
Everything that happened was dark, violent, and cruel. It was definitely less bloody than the first, but it was still just as brutal. There are dark moments, so yeah, check the TWs. But can we talk about that twist?! I love when a book can actually surprise me.
“She turned you into a monster while she played the savior. But not to me.” He pulls himself up, wrapping his arms around me tightly. “I saw you, baby. I see you. Just like you saw me.” His breath ghosts over my jaw, and I gently cup the back of his head as I dip down to kiss him hard “I see you,”
Hector, my God, it was hit after hit for him and my heart hurts for him. He never had anyone to protect him; he truly was a survivor and I just found him so cute. Charon was such a softy, life had been so cruel to him, yet he was still so caring. The way this man fell instantly for Hector, I mean, I fell instantly in love with both of them, so I get it. Their love was perfect for them, the softness fit so well with what they both are and needed, and I am so incredibly happy that they found their happy place at the end. It was hard earned and so deserving.
“The Ferryman stands over it like a god of death, shoulders heaving and eyes wild. But I’m not afraid. My instincts don't scream run. My heart doesn’t twist in fear. If anything, it slows, because despite the carnage unfolding around us, I’ve never felt safer than I do at this moment. Even standing before him after he just murdered someone in cold blood.”
“I love you,” I whisper against his mouth. “Thank you for saving me. Then, and now.” He kisses me back tenderly, blue eyes shining as he leads us toward a future I never hoped to dream of. Toward home, with my Ferryman at my side. The owner of my rotten soul. Though death had tried to claim it first; It was always his to keep.”
“Bite me again,” I murmur, straddling his lap to sit on his thighs. He releases a sharp breath as our shafts glide together. “Make me bleed. I want to carry your mark into the afterlife when I go.”
He leans forward, dragging his lips over the shell of my ear before mouthing, “You’re not going anywhere without me.”
I never thought that a freaking crow would actually make me tear up, but adding a chapter from Nyx got me. I really don’t know why, I just found it so cute, and I love how much Nyx cared for both Charon and Hector. I just love these two so much

“I am the last to remember his voice, the human who gave me words and love when the world took it all from him. Until the one with pretty eyes gave it all back. And while the wind still carries me, I will keep them in my sight. For as long as I breathe.”
I absolutely loved this book. I really have nothing bad to say, and it is definitely a five star book for me. I know this is book two of the series, but Hector and Charon are my favorites. I’ll have to see if any of the other couples win me over more than these two did. Right now, I feel like I need a more lighthearted book, but I’m so excited to continue this series, and I’m sure I’ll enjoy every second of it.

In the salt-soaked wood of the dock beneath our feet and the lighthouse walls we’ve patched with our own hands. In every kiss and every scar. The pages may run out and our world might end, but for now… Our story has just begun.”

A gruesome but intriguing horror romance with interesting characters, a simple but compelling plot, and lots of gore!
This book has:
-insta-love
-MC that can’t talk / MC that can’t read
-gore (and other stuff so check the TW)
-a clever bird familiar
-forced proximity
-MC that goes feral in the infected rain
I was surprised and intrigued by how different this book was from book 1 in this multi-author series! It’s clear that the series will have excellent variety, while still taking place in this interesting setting. Is it questionable and gross? Absolutely.
That being said, you’re going to be skipping pages to see what happens next! The raw passion and need for survival in this story, along with the instinctual love that the characters have for each other makes it a quick and fun read!
Definitely get your hands on this on October 3rd!

I’ve tried and failed to read the first 2 books in this series. Both throw around rape like it means nothing - this one even worse because it’s so briefly mentioned that the MC was 11.
I hate that MM romance is turning into some sort of fetish for these authors.

Holy Fr3king amazeballs… this book is spectacular- hooked me right in, could not put it down, read it every free minute.
I am as always awed by Bree Wiley’s ability to stretch across tropes and sub genres and this horror dystopian romance is utterly addictive.
The world building smooth, flawless, entrancing, the world is unrecognisable and humanity has caved to it’s basest form.
Charon is so unbelievably sweet, a soft marshmallow in a world that is honestly all edges.
Hector is one of the most resilient single minded characters I’ve read and he is a miracle
The life and death nature of the world allows for a perfect high intensity connection to develop - these two bond quick and strong. But Zone T is a dark place and Hector has his quest and he will not be deterred. The dystopian world comes with a warped heirarchy, unbelievably horrific acts if inhumanity and plot twists that make your heart ache and also howl for vengence!
I’m glad Jonas got what’s coming to him and keeping in theme with the sweetness I came to expect these two had a hard won HEA which was truly quite lovely.
Also I have to say I loved Nyx!
If you like a gory, dystopian horror romance which characters you will adore , tons of action, comeuppance , surprising sweetness, wonderful world building and unpredictable plot twists, definitely give this one a go.

Characters: Charon and Hector
Wow. I did not expect that at all. I went into it expecting dark, grungy, morally gray/black characters, and lots of violence. Don't get me wrong, all of that is still there...but I f*cking cried at the end of it. It's emotional and beautiful. Just wow, I'm so beyond impressed and in love with this couple.
Hector is infected and is caught and dropped on Charon's boat. Charon stays on the boat and with the help of his m*rder bird, determines who is infected/a carrier. In order to enter the "city" the person infected is marked, typically by losing an eye. Hector loses the lower part of a leg. Charon is intrigued with him from the start and decides to keep him. As they spend time together, they learn more about each other and develop a bond. Charon is mute, something terrible happened to him in his past to make him that way. And Hector is looking for his sister and knows she is supposed to be at that compound/city.
I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll leave it there.
I absolutely loved these two together. You hate what you don't know or understand or fear. So, these two start off with Hector basically hating Charon. It's honestly kind of funny. And then you see the relationship morph into a friendship as the two of them spend more time together and rely on each other a bit. That friendship turns into a soulmate level of love. And when all of the pieces come together and you see the full picture of what they both went through it truly breaks your heart.
I'm just going to say that my obsession with Charon is very unhealthy. I'm writing my review almost a full two weeks after I finished reading the book and I still think about that man every single day. I have had to stop myself from going back and rereading it again already. I think it's one of those books that will not only stick with me for a very long time but that I will fall in love with even more as time goes on...without even needing to reread it (though I know I'll do that plenty as well). And yeah, it's a gory, violent, zombie book but the love story inside of it is deep and beautiful.
The characters are incredible. The world and zombie lore is extremely interesting. And the writing is phenomenal (it's Bree so duh!). I am loving this series already and cannot wait for the next one!

Another amazing story in this collab!
This was such an amazing, thrilling and well written horror story. Cause in my opinion, this is horror, mixed with finding true love.
Loved the characters, and how they grew to love each other and be each other’s home.
My heart broke over and over, these two have been through so much and have experienced betrayal from their families. They heal together, and find their own way in this gruesome world they live in.
I really didn’t think I’d shed a tear reading this one, but the epilogue did it!

🧟♀️ honestly, I don't know where to start, I still need to write a proper review but this book is living rent-free in my mind since I finished it a couple of days ago...

This world is something else. It honestly reminds me of the walking dead with a twist. These people in this world are vicious and brutal and desperate. Except Charon. My heart broke for that man, especially when people called him names. He is a light in the dark, a breath of fresh air. Hector is desperate for more reasons than one, desperate to get inside Zone T, desperate to find his sister, desperate for food and eventually desperate for Charon. This book is more of a slow burn and low to medium spice. The love though? That is beautiful and bright. This world is crazy and sucks me in. I devoured this book as fast as a biter would devour its meal. Well written, amazing characters, especially Hector and Charon and Nyx. They are the only good in this story, but they are brilliant and endearing and sweet. I fell hard for these two men and their murder bird. Heed the trigger warning, lots of blood and gore. While this story had some light in the dark, it was still dark and the characters still went through so much hurt and pain and struggle. This series is definitely dark and twisted and so amazing.

I absolutely love spooky season, so when I saw Bree was releasing this one I said sign me up! I quickly hit the brakes when I saw the word dystopian. I’ve watched TV & Movies with this setting and I either absolutely love it or I completely dislike it. But I trust Bree’s writing, I knew if any author could make me like this setting it would be her and damn was I right. I fell in love with Charon, Hector and Nyx. Charon could rip anyone apart with his bare hands but has the sweetest heart despite how much the world has shit on him. It’s so admirable and I love him so much for it. Hector was also dealt a raw deal, but his perseverance is inspiring and seeing him let his walls down for love was everything. I love a good animal side character and Nyx is the perfect little m*rder bird who deserves all the good scratches. This book was full of surprises for me- I’ve found going into books more blind (only knowing some of the tropes) has made me enjoy my reads more because my mind hasn’t already put together an idea of where I think the stories are going, I like the surprises and the anticipation of what’s to come. I’m a sucker for good epilogue, this one hit me in the feels, it was perfect for them. I want to thank Bree for the opportunity to read and review this book.

What a world. Hector and Charon go through some rough stuff. Zone T is NOT the place to be. I definitely wouldn’t make it. Also 🖕🏻 the judge. Why we as humans still need to control things even when the world is crap will never cease to amaze me. Even as everything falls apart around Hector and Charon, they cling to each other and are each others person. Healthy probably not, but I mean there’s biters everywhere, so who cares 🤷♀️😂And Nyx, everyone needs a murder bird 😂 Eye for an eye. That epilogue was unexpected in the best way, definitely made me tear up.
Please don’t go into this story thinking it’s going to be super romantic. It’s not meant to be. Yes, there is romance and spice, but the world that’s created here takes the cake. And as always, CHECK YOUR TRIGGERS.
Also, I know a lot of people skip the afterword from the author, but don’t skip it. I promise you won’t regret it. There’s a message there that needs to be heard ❤️

Have you ever read a book so good you just know it would make an incredible movie? That’s exactly how I felt reading Rotten.
wow… this book gave me all the feels. It’s dark, creepy, and full of tension, but at the same time it has such a soft and emotional side that really surprised me.
Charon is this huge, scary man who’s lost almost everything his voice, his freedom, even his reason to live. His only friend is a raven (which I actually loved), until Hector comes into the picture. From the moment Charon sees him, something changes. Their connection is instant, but what I loved most is how it slowly grew into something real and emotional.
Charon might look like a monster, but the way he is with Hector is so soft and sweet. And Hector oh my gosh, he brought chaos but also so much warmth into Charon’s life. Their chemistry was undeniable, and I couldn’t stop reading just to see what would happen next.
I honestly didn’t expect to love this book as much as I did. Bree Wiley’s writing pulled me in right away, and by the end—especially that epilogue I was literally tearing up 😭 This story is the perfect mix of horror and comfort, pain and love, and it’s going to stay with me for a long time.

I've read my share of books that had the farrymen character but none wrote like Charon i absolutely loved Bree Wiley's take on him and Hector no matter what he faced he marched through so determined and strong willed. And in the end, after everything they faced, even in a world falling apart, we get to see their beautiful HEA we wanted from the 1st page.
Such an amazing story, so perfectly written you won't be able to stop yourself from falling in love with Charon and Hector and their journey.

Awwww, these broken boys! I loved Charon and Hector's story so much! This is another story of resilience and strength. Their lives have not been easy, but they are still here, still fighting and they finally find each other. Despite everything that's happened to him, Charon is still such a kind, gentle soul. Hector is so strong and still manages to be sassy at times. I loved how they took care of each other and I loved their connection.
This is my second book in this shared world, and I am yet again blown away by this world building, and how interesting this story was. I couldn't put it down, I was so curious to see what will happen next.
Pick this up if you want a dark and somewhat gory read with 2 broken boys. Your heart will hurt for them, but you'll be happy when it all ends. Oh, and the epilogue might make you cry a bit, it definitely made me cry.

This book just confirmed my belief that this series can absolutely hold its own against the Monstrous Series. The worldbuilding in this installment? Simply brilliant. And the plot twist—holy shit. I was so shocked and surprised; I honestly didn’t see it coming. And then that epilogue… short, yes, but so incredibly beautiful and special.
I love both MCs with all my heart—Charon and Hector are just perfect together, I can’t! Once again, two broken boys who deserve all the love in the world and who truly earned their HEA. Bree created something really wonderful with this book, and I adored every moment. 🥹🫶

Oh my beautiful broken boys.. this is another spectacular entry into this series! These boys broke my soul and yet put it back together with their love and faith. The one who wouldn't speak and the one who couldn't let go.. Hector and Charon just melted my soul, the way you are lead to belive charon is someone he isn't and we are lead to believe lyna is also something she isn't. This world is just beautiful in it's brokenness and i love it all

The book was pretty good, the epilogue was beyond beautiful and made me cry and forget that I only found the rest of the book pretty good.
I love Nyx, she is perfect. You will also love Nyx.
Definitely give this one a read, the series has been a fun journey so far. Excited to read the next .

I loved Hector & Charon together the Rotter and the monster. Cant believe of that little twist at the end but I’m glad that these two got their HEA (well there version of one) my heart hurt for both of them but glad they found each other. So far I’m loving this shared world.

October 12, 2025I was super excited for this one but unfortunately it just didn't work for me. I couldn't relate to either MMC and ultimately couldn't care what happened. I'm bummed but I know others will love this!

3.3 stars ✨ Arc reader- this was a good dark dystopian, post apocalyptic, MM romance. The lore and world building was great. The characters dynamics and connections were intense and surprisingly sweet. Check the trigger warnings and this will be dark for people! I felt like it was a little disjointed/rushed in some areas but you can easily overlook it when you read the whole thing and things really pick up around the half way mark! The spice is intense and dirty (perfect for the plot) 🖤

This was gut wrenchingly addictive. The first page immediately sucked me in. I finished it in one sitting cause I just couldn’t get myself to put it down. There was always something happening that just kept me invested. Every time I thought I found a good place to stop I just told myself, “one more chapter.” 👁️👄👁️
I couldn’t get enough of Charon and Hector. I was very intrigued by the one boat; he can’t speak/he can’t read aspect. I’m glad my curiosity got the best of me though because these men were playing at my heartstrings. I won’t lie, this one kinda had me, especially that epilogue, but I’m blaming that on hormones and having a soft spot for animals 💅🏼
Both these men had some seriously rough lives, so I loved getting to read the moments they found comfort in one another. Charon had worse abandonment issues than Hector, and Hector struggled more with physical touch. These broken men were able to bring one another back from the horrors that lived rent free in their minds. They deserved their well earned HEA. It couldn’t have felt more right 💖
P.S. Nyx was such a cute murder bird! She was fierce, and I loved her choice in snacks 👀

Finding Delaware was my favorite read of this year - so I was excited to pick this up. I really wanted to like it but I have a couple of problems with this book. To begin with, it's supposed to be a standalone but you're just thrown into this virus ravaged world without any world building. Maybe I would have understood more if I read the first book in the series but I only picked this up because it was written by Bree Wiley.
Information is just told to you and there's really no interaction with the reality of their post-apocalyptic world. That was something I could look past but what really made me put the book down was how the romance was (or wasn't) progressing between Hector and Charon. There was no rhyme or reason as to why Charon wanted to keep Hector on his boat or why he wanted to protect him. Then Hector suddenly decides like two day in that he "doesn't need to look out for danger" when Charon around. I'm just not buying that someone that has supposedly spent their entire life fighting tooth and nail for survival would just relax so quickly around someone like Charon under those circumstances.

This was such a phenomenal and emotional story. Every book in this series has been fantastic and tragic. Bree is such a great writer and her words bleed emotion. This story was no different. These characters were everything! The spice in this was rather low, but you didn't notice it much since the storyline was always moving. Also, the trauma and emotions kept you engaged as well. When the spice hit, it was delicious. I love how the action in this story started off straight from chaper one. I wasn't expecting the twist towards the end of this book! Charon and Hector were destined to meet and their lives have been tragically interwoven.
This story follows Charon, Hector, and Nyx. Hector is thrown on the boat where Charon the Ferryman is rowing back to Zone T which is a prison. Hector ends up getting bit bad and Charon saves him. The guards end up leaving Hector with Charon to die. Charon ends up saving him multiple times and falls for him hard. Hector confides in Charon and tells him he needs to get into Zone T to find his sister. They end up concocting a plan to get Hector in unnoticed. Things go bad fast and everyone is in danger. Secrets are revealed. Hard truths are learned. Who will survive this bloodbath? Can Charon and Hector build a new life together?
My heart broke for both of these men 😭. Charon had a horrible traumatic past that lead to him being alone and mute. The last person to hear his voice is his bird Nyx. Despite all he has been through, Charon is such a mountain of a man who's a marshmallow. He just wants to be loved and accepted. Hector was left alone at a young age and endured horrible abuse by some soldiers. He is a scrappy, fiery, loyal man who's will to live is strong. I loved how protective both of these men were towards each other. I loved how sweet and attentive Charon was to Hector. I loved how feral Hector got for Charon. These two broken men clung together and made their own light. I love how this author made Charon's character and how he communicated since he was mute. You could tell be their interactions how much they loved each other without words. The tension and chemistry between them was 🥵🥵. They went through hell to get their HEA!
Nyx was a favorite part of this book for me 🐦⬛. Nyx was Charon's bird who had the virus. Nyx had so much insight and empathy. I loved the interactions between them all. Especially when Hector liked to bicker with Nyx. The epilogue at the end in Nyx's POV made me cry. It was beautiful. It was everything. I highly recommend this book.
