First, I'd like to start with a more general comment about Luka Jacobs' books. There are a few distinct series and - if I recall correctly - a few standalone books. Considering the subject matter, one might think it's all more of the same, with a few different accents here and there. But then you'd be wrong. It's fascinating to see, that each series has its own distinct vibe and that absolutely works.
This book is the latest installment in the Nicole Beretti-series, where our main character finds herself confronted with an old nemesis. I say 'confronted', but as this book shows - with a wonderful backstory on both Red Eyes and Nicole herself - we learn that not everything is black or white. The book gives the reader a bit of nuance which ads a bit of an emotional dilemma at certain points.
As we've come to expect from Jacobs, the story flows wonderfully, the dialogue and characters are excellent and real. We delve deeper into the person that is Nicole Beretti and her relationship with Jacobi develops further; from a more or less awkward cooperation to a real partnership.
The story doesn't hold back on brutal action at times but it is functional, which I can appreciate. I could've easily wasted a good night's sleep and finish this in one sitting, but I wanted to savour the experience and I'm glad I did.
Another winner by Luka Jacobs; it seems it's impossible for her to disappoint.
