Royal Navy Task Force 23, led by Captain William King aboard the HMS Queen Elizabeth, embarks on a multinational training exercise in the North Sea codenamed OPERATION PHANTOM HIT, due to be accompanied by warships from Canada, Spain, and Denmark. With tensions escalating worldwide, the task force remains ever-vigilant, yet the calm waters give no hint of what awaits. As the fleet prepares for routine drills, a sudden and violent storm materialises without warning, defying all meteorological predictions. Amid the chaos, the crew begins mysteriously falling unconscious—one by one, without explanation. When Captain King finds himself seemingly the last man standing, he scrambles to keep the carrier afloat, but his fight against the unknown is short-lived. Before he can send out a distress call, he too succumbs to the invisible force, plunging the task force into eerie silence.
When the crew awakens, the storm has vanished, and the sea is calm once more—but something is very wrong. The fleet's GPS and long-range communication systems are down, leaving them stranded with no way to contact home. As they attempt to regroup, strange inconsistencies in their surroundings emerge, raising unsettling questions about where—or when—they truly are. With limited resources and growing uncertainty, Captain King must lead his fleet through uncharted waters, piecing together the truth behind their ordeal while preparing for whatever unknown forces might be watching.
Time travel thrillers involving our modern military and people or creatures from long ago gives me a high! In this story, British ships encounter a storm that sends them back to 1942 during WWII. At first, the Captain and those within his scope of command didn't believe what happened to them. They couldn't deny the reality of not where but when, after being attacked. The downing of one of their helicopters, capture and rescue of their men by the Germans, is so exciting that it was difficult for me to put the book aside. One pet peeve I have is the author spent too much time at the beginning describing things in detail before the story really caught my interest. Otherwise, I can't wait for book 2! 👍👍
This was a very enjoyable read. It was an interesting take on the time travel trope, but little was offered to explain how it happened, but that was really unnecessary to the story. It didn't need a big explanation as that would have taken away a bit of the mystery. I found the characters decently developed. The action was well written.
