Legacy #4

Legacy - Shatterpoint

Rate this book
Jackson has already lost one home. To protect the one he found in the future, he'll risk everything. But victory may come at a terrible price.

The Galactic Confederation of Humanity is fighting for survival.

After the events that pushed the GCH and Insectoid Imperium into open war, William Jackson has returned to the shadows, using the skills he's spent years mastering to strike at an enemy whose overwhelming numbers could eventually crush humanity.

Longing to finally make a real difference in the war, Jackson undertakes a desperate, high-stakes mission deep inside enemy territory: destroy a critical Imperium shipyard and inflict the kind of damage that could change the course of the conflict.

It's exactly the kind of impossible mission Jackson was trained for—but one he knows he may not return from.

Aboard the Phoenix, now equipped with an experimental propulsion system capable of carrying him deep into enemy space, Jackson sets out with his trusted AI, Bits, and Alpha135, an advanced android from GCH Intelligence.

Their target lies in the heart of the Imperium, where discovery could mean death and escape is anything but certain.

But Jackson's attempt to cripple the Imperium's war machine will cost him more than he could have imagined.

Now he's stranded on an uncharted world.

His ship is lost. His advanced technology is beginning to fail. And the hope that anyone will find him grows fainter with every passing day.

Worse, he isn't alone.

The isolated islands of this mostly ocean-covered world are home to deadly predators perfectly adapted to hunt and kill—and survival is becoming frighteningly primitive.

With the war raging somewhere beyond the stars, Jackson must face a battlefield no amount of military training could fully prepare him for. Here, there are no armies to defeat and no mission to complete.

There is only survival.

Cut off from the GCH and everything that has become home, Jackson will have to rely on every skill he's learned—and discover just how far he's willing to go to survive.

Because the mission was only the beginning.

Now he has to make it home.

Legacy: Shatterpoint is the fourth book in the seven-book Legacy series, an epic science-fiction adventure of covert warfare, impossible missions, hostile alien worlds, deadly predators, failing technology, and one man's desperate fight to survive when everything he depends upon is stripped away.

Legacy: Shatterpoint takes the series in an unexpected direction. It opens with a mission that feels almost Mission: Impossible in scale before quickly shifting gears into something closer to Cast Away. Jackson spends much of the novel isolated, relying on his ingenuity to survive and solve one problem after another. Bits becomes the closest thing to Wilson, providing both companionship and a welcome counterbalance to Jackson's solitude.

The survival aspect keeps the story moving. Every obstacle demands another creative solution, and Bradley Elliott does a good job making the progression feel earned rather than convenient.

One of the highlights was the brief introduction of a fascinating new rescue species. I only wish we had spent more time with them, as they added an intriguing new dimension to the universe.

The relationship storyline was also handled well. It wasn't hard to predict that Jackson's love interest would recover after the events of the previous book, nor that their relationship wouldn't simply pick up where it left off. Even with the series' ambitious science fiction concepts, the emotional side remains grounded and believable, which gives the characters more depth.

The ending leaves humanity and its allies in a precarious position and sets the stage for some big questions going forward. I'm curious to see where Elliott takes the story next and how he continues to raise the stakes without losing the character-driven elements that make the series enjoyable.

Overall, Shatterpoint is another solid entry in the Legacy series. While I missed some of the broader cast and larger-scale military action from earlier books, the survival focus offered a refreshing change of pace and kept me turning the pages.

Plenty of Action

William has his hands full of action - nearly more than he can handle. After he returns from his most dangerous adventure yet, he’s hit emotionally when he finds out the results of Veeris time in Medical.

Proofreading for this book was the worst than any book to date. I’m still going to get the next book, hoping the previous standard returns.

My favourite book ever in the series so far, different twists and turns with the survival focus. Really enjoyed the creativity Jackson needed to push forward.

I was really enjoying this series, then the team decided to go AWOL for the second time. I could no longer suspend disbelief. It seems to me that most of the “new” authors I’ve read lack an appreciation for responsibility; perhaps that’s just the age we live in.
