Shannon MacLeod’s K9 Mine is a fun romantasy novel that, from the first page, grabbed my attention and pulled me through to the last word. I generally am not a romance reader, but I sincerely enjoyed this book. Its coziness caused me to curl up in my favorite chair, brew a massive mug of chai tea, and sit under a warm blanket and read as fast as possible to reach a very satisfying ending.
The novel opens in sixth-century Ireland as druids capture the fae and steal their magical abilities to turn into animals. One fae escapes, traveling through a portal to modern-day South Carolina. She “lands” behind a dumpster at the motel where police officer Corporal Travis McLean is staying. He is traveling to dog breeders in search of the perfect canine police dog. The nameless fae is found by the motel owners, who invite her in and offer her a shower, meal, and clothing. Meanwhile, the druid Ansgar follows her through the portal to bring her back.
Travis, preparing to check out, enters the scene as Ansgar threatens the compassionate motel owners. The fae had escaped by transforming into a bird and hiding in Travis’s car. Ansgar, thwarted, leaves to pursue his quarry while Tavis returns home, unaware of his secret passenger. Under the cover of darkness, the fae resumes her normal shape and is discovered by Travis.
MacLeod’s excellent pacing hooks the reader into the budding romance. Travis’s protective nature kicks in, and he immediately offers shelter to the starving and bewildered fae. He helps the fae find her name, Saoirse, and helps her acclimate to the modern world. But, not far behind her, Ansgar has resumed the hunt, determined to reap her magical abilities for his own selfish gain.
This fun novel is a delightful romantic fantasy that follows a twisting route to a wonderful ending. MacLeod has layered in plot twists and turns, pulling the novel away from formulaic fiction and making the plot unique and engaging. Readers who enjoyed the Twilight series or the Bridgerton series will love tucking into Shannon MacLeod’s K9 Mine.
