Travis dreamed of partnering with a police dog—but Fate handed him a faery and something unexpected instead…

Corporal Travis McLean is a man on a mission and doesn’t have time to waste on trivialities like love or relationships lasting longer than a night or two. He has always been laser-focused on his dream of becoming a K9 officer like his parents — but that driving ambition takes a backseat when he catches a beautiful, runaway faery rummaging through his fridge…

In faraway sixth-century Ireland, the evil druid Ansgar has been enslaving the fae for a dark purpose, and the one that got away could be his ultimate downfall. Now, Ansgar will move through time itself to bring her back.

As Travis’s normal, orderly world (or as orderly as it gets considering a jealous ex-girlfriend, policing in a tourist resort party town, keeping his best friend out of trouble, and his desire to find his dream K9) spirals into chaos and love begins to blossom despite his best efforts, he is thrust into a centuries-old conflict with stakes higher than he ever imagined and forced to confront a reality that defies everything he knows.

Amid all the madness, he learns that the heart has a mind of its own, and to protect everything he loves, he'll have to set history right—before it’s too late.

Shannon MacLeod lives next to an abandoned theme park. Her Celtic romantasies are filled with strong heroes and equally strong heroines, interesting locales, colorful secondary characters, a touch of magick and mystery, loads of quirky humor, a body count and absolutely no sparkly vampires.

When not writing, she lives a life of servitude to three cats and one entitled German Shepherd dog. She enjoys rainy days, good music, and spending long hours gazing at her beloved ocean. An avid wearer of boots regardless of season and dangerously high heels, she watches Lord of the Rings more than any sane person should and can, in fact, reenact entire battle scenes using interpretive dance. Her spirit animals are the honey badger and Gordon Ramsay.

Magic and loyalty

Reading this book was a very enjoyable experience. It tells a story that mixes fantasy, romance, and action in a way that feels both unusual and effective. What stood out to me the most was how the main character, Travis, shows that duty is not always just about following the law. Sometimes, it is about doing what feels truly right. The presence of a magical being in the middle of the modern world adds a special and surprising element to the story.

What really captured my attention, though, was the connection between the two main characters. Their relationship feels genuine, with moments that are funny, emotional, and even intense. I also liked how the story links the past and the present through a dangerous villain. It made me think about how powerful the instinct to protect someone can be, even if that person comes from a completely different world.

I can say that K9 Mine captivated me from the first page. I definitely love these kinds of reads that have an unexpected mix of romance, fantasy, and action. One of the things I liked most about the story is Shannon MacLeod's ability to combine the everyday with the extraordinary. The novel keeps you wanting to read on to find out what will happen next; the tension grows with each chapter, which makes it even more interesting. I especially liked that, amid all the chaos, the story never loses its heart, touching on themes like love, loyalty, friendship, and even the fate of an entire world. If you're looking for a read that blends magic, romance, humor, and adventure with a touch of suspense, I recommend K9.

The pacing is brisk without sacrificing character development, and MacLeod’s knack for mixing humor with tension keeps the tone engaging. You’ll find yourself rooting for Travis to not only save the day but also get the K9 partner (and maybe the love) he’s been dreaming of.
For readers who love genre mashups with heart (think Outlander meets K-9 with a dash of Men in Black) K9 Mine delivers a witty, thrilling, and utterly unique ride.

Shannon MacLeod’s K9 Mine is a fun romantasy novel that, from the first page, grabbed my attention and pulled me through to the last word. I generally am not a romance reader, but I sincerely enjoyed this book. Its coziness caused me to curl up in my favorite chair, brew a massive mug of chai tea, and sit under a warm blanket and read as fast as possible to reach a very satisfying ending.

The novel opens in sixth-century Ireland as druids capture the fae and steal their magical abilities to turn into animals. One fae escapes, traveling through a portal to modern-day South Carolina. She “lands” behind a dumpster at the motel where police officer Corporal Travis McLean is staying. He is traveling to dog breeders in search of the perfect canine police dog. The nameless fae is found by the motel owners, who invite her in and offer her a shower, meal, and clothing. Meanwhile, the druid Ansgar follows her through the portal to bring her back.

Travis, preparing to check out, enters the scene as Ansgar threatens the compassionate motel owners. The fae had escaped by transforming into a bird and hiding in Travis’s car. Ansgar, thwarted, leaves to pursue his quarry while Tavis returns home, unaware of his secret passenger. Under the cover of darkness, the fae resumes her normal shape and is discovered by Travis.

MacLeod’s excellent pacing hooks the reader into the budding romance. Travis’s protective nature kicks in, and he immediately offers shelter to the starving and bewildered fae. He helps the fae find her name, Saoirse, and helps her acclimate to the modern world. But, not far behind her, Ansgar has resumed the hunt, determined to reap her magical abilities for his own selfish gain.

This fun novel is a delightful romantic fantasy that follows a twisting route to a wonderful ending. MacLeod has layered in plot twists and turns, pulling the novel away from formulaic fiction and making the plot unique and engaging. Readers who enjoyed the Twilight series or the Bridgerton series will love tucking into Shannon MacLeod’s K9 Mine.

If you are a reader of romantasy novels, then K9 Mine by Shannon MacLeod should be on your radar. It’s an entertaining romp through various fantasy themes and tropes, throwing together a modern corporal, a faerie, an ancient, evil druid and other fantastical elements. Ancient magic and modern romance clash as the characters fight for survival and love. I feel like the writing could be a little more polished in spots, but the plot is fun with plenty of twists to keep readers engaged. If you enjoy romantasy but are tired of the same old stories then this book is a fast-paced, refreshing palate-cleanser. I am giving it four out of five stars.

An utterly original blend of urban fantasy, time travel, and heart!

I loved how K9 Mine flips the typical “man and his dog” trope on its head, throwing in a runaway faery, ancient druids, and a chaotic small-town setting. Travis is a genuinely relatable hero, torn between duty, family expectations, and an unexpected connection with the fae. The action kept me turning pages, but it’s the emotional depth that stood out. A perfect read for fans of paranormal romance with a fresh twist. Looking forward to more!

Well this was not exactly what I thought it would be about but what a ride it takes you for. Travis is a police officer whose main goal is to become a K9 officer with very little time for anything else. So when a damsel in distress shows up at his door (literally) he is not too sure of what to do with her espcialy when she has some very distinct attributes. There is humor, family/friend ties and yes dogs. I seriously love Search!!!!!

I think the book was ok but just not for me unfortunately.

Nothing I want to say wrong just I couldn't quite get into story as I hoped.

For that I'm marking it a 3 star read.
