A highly entertaining, albeit piercing account of the complex interplay between football and politics in Brazil. I especially enjoyed the writing style and parenthetical clarifications for the 'gringo' target audience. With an engaging narrative voice from the very beginning, Jönnson captures the desperate milieu of the football giant in the prelude to the world's most watched sporting event. Skillfully injecting anecdotal experience where relevant, the Swede weaves in and out of a national heritage haunted by totalitarian and corrupt tendencies. A must read for those seeking to understand the loaded historical context in which this year's final matches will be played...

A pretty good travelogue on Brazilian football and society up to 2014 as Jönsson travels around Brazil meeting some of Brazilian football's most important characters. There are sections on Pele, Neymar, Romario, Garrincha, Zagallo, Socrates as well as the fall out from the devastating loss to Uruguay in 1950, football in the Amazonas region and the protests during 2013's Confederations Cup which awoke Brazil and brought the people and the national team closer than they had been in years. All of this is intertwined with the country's politics as they moved from democracy to military dictatorship back to democracy. It is quite entertaining at times, especially when Jönsson joins in on an away day with hardcore fans of Corinthians.

I can understand who the book is aimed for the casual fan who would have wanted to know more about Brazil and it's football in the run up to the 2014 world cup, but that means were left with a book that's shallow in detail and, by now, dated.

Shame, as there's some interesting sections there, like the trip to an away game with the Hawks (Corinthians ultras), but the author chose to go down a different path which, commercially, I understand.

This is a solid collection of essays, but if you have read other Brazilian football books you might already know quite a bit of this. It does look at the darker side with discussion on racism, poverty and the corruption in Brazil. The later section with Romario was especially interesting.
