What happens when your best friend in the entire world is ALSO the man you're in love with? What if he means more to you than anything else in the whole wide world... but telling him how you feel would ruin the amazing friendship you already have?
So you keep quiet. You smile through it. You learn to live with the ache while he moves on with other people... and you just try to survive it, all while your heart breaks more and more. No matter how much the pain continues to grow, it would be nothing compared to not having him in your life at all.
The story is written to where I am compelled to see what happens next because of a cliffhanger, but so far, its just a guy who is trapping one woman in a friendly relationship while stringing his girlfriend, who he is constantly annoyed by, along. But it's a good soap opera so far.
Dystopian in more ways than one. Jasmine - get some real friends and leave that manchild alone. He’s not for you and I don’t care how beautiful he is, he’s an insensitive user.
Stayed up late at night as I got so engrossed in the characters. I’m so please the author wrote a female character wasn’t super tall!! Can’t wait to read the next book
This is going to be a first for me. A one star review that means—from the bottom of my heart— this book is not worth reading. Usually I would cushion with my one/zero star books, by saying it wasn’t for me. I like to critique AND recognize that I may not be the target audience. However, this book made me feel a range of emotions from apathy to disgust to pity.
I was pulled in by the cover and title, as I so often am. However the will-they/won’t-they-friends-to-lovers plot line that could basically write itself fell flat on the floor and seized violently for 163 pages. I put it out of its long winded misery when I realized that I don’t need to make myself suffer like this.
Hand feeding your readers fistfuls of vaguely timed history is not world building. Compatibility between characters isn’t a thesis you aim to support in a multi-paragraphed description between lines of COMPLETELY unrelated dialogue. And constantly lusting after your frenemy’s boyfriend who showed slight interest TEN YEARS AGO (even if he was your best friend first), does not a yearner make. It actually just makes the main character an asshole. Even if this black Mary Sue is clearly written to be likable.
Between the fake, pick-me main character, the irredeemable asshole love interest, the unbalanced description heavy text (seriously think 10% dialogue), and RANDOM post civil war American dystopia setting? Pick! A! Struggle!
Was going through a bit of a reading funk, starting books, skipping pages and stopping half way through. This book made my heart flutter and my surroundings disappear from the very first to the last page. I'm so happy I stumbled across this book. I really feel for Jazzy, most people have experienced the pain of unrequited love. I cannot wait to read the next installment.
I honestly can’t tell if this was written by early-generation AI or by a writer who just never reread their draft. What I can tell you is that there were no editors, no beta readers—because if there were, this book wouldn’t read like this.
I always believe anyone who finishes a book deserves applause. So round of applause for Alexandria Da Great. But that’s where my applause ends. The writing is repetitive to a diabolical degree—cut out the constant repeats, and the book would be half as long. On top of that, it’s pure “tell, don’t show.” The story literally explains conversations while we’re in the conversations. It makes no sense.
The characters? I wanted to punch every single one of them. The FMC is unbearable—her only personality trait is pining after a man who’s awful. She even resents the friend who stood by her during grief simply because that friend is dating Dante. As for Dante himself, he’s just…hot. That’s it. He’s a bad boyfriend, a bad friend, a bad coworker—and the author never shows us otherwise, only insists he’s good at his job. If I ever met Dante, I’d hate him. His girlfriend? I wanted to shake her. He flirts with other women, gaslights her, avoids problems, and she sticks around because he’s attractive? Girl, no. Both women act like Dante is the last man on Earth when, really, they could do better, be better, become something else.
The world-building doesn’t help either. I couldn’t tell what the setting was supposed to be. It reads like modern day—except not? There are vague hints about a civil war and states leaving the U.S., but nothing is fleshed out. There’s no real effort to establish the setting or the world, just scattered breadcrumbs that never add up.
Bottom line: this feels more like an unpolished first draft than a finished book. With stronger editing and development, it could have been much better, but as it stands, I can’t recommend it.
First all I really WANTED to love this book. The cover art is eye catching and I truly love the book cover. But what I can’t stand is our FL.
She keeps dragging her feet and making dumb decision that just outright pisses me off. Dante who is her best friend has a girlfriend name Liz aka Elizabeth. Who is also her friend, now its kind of made know to Liz earlier that she had feeling for her best friend. But Liz continue to pursue him.
Fine whatever, and clearly they become an item. But Jasmine reactions towards him, and how she “trying” to stay mutual is annoying. She keeps dragging her dang feet and doing small things that would make anyone girlfriend or boyfriend feel some type of way. Not to mention Dante isn’t helping the situation. But more so Jasmine not setting clear boundaries and standing her ground on it is even more annoying.
Her taking herself out to a fancy place, meeting them and then instead of declining the invite, so she can enjoy her night like she wanted to. She makes the decision to accept there invite and she starts to feel like a 3rd wheel, and out of place. And i’m just like “You brought this onto yourself dumbass”
Her life choices here is annoying. But what even worse is that this book ends on a cliffy. Which is like whyyy!?!?!
This story isn’t a bad one and I feel that it has a lot of potential. So I plan on reading the next one in hopes that Jasmine will move on and get her HEA. And not drag this on, I want to see how this end, since its on a cliffy, but I think why I’m even more jumping into it because the book cover for this one, is so eye catching it peaks my curiosity.
I HOPE the next one will be better than this one, and she moves on!
This book and others popped up when I clicked on a link to read a sample of 'The Strength of Marchetti: In League with Marchetti Prequel' by Kervia that turned out to be a lot of filler (though I appreciated the dedication to Malcolm Jamal Warner) and never got to the actual sample of the book which should be a huge no-no.
Now ... on to the book I did read—I've learned never to judge a book by its cover, the provocative cover depicted above is not depicted in the book though Dante does show Jasmine some defense moves—there is no sexual situation or position that takes place between them.
They have been best friends for the past ten years, she has a crush on him but he seems to be clueless. A couple of years later, Jasmine begins to work with a woman named Liz, who specifically (imo) befriends her in order to get close to Dante who is described as uber good-looking. Liz ingriates herself into their relationship and eventually Dante begins to spend time with Liz and then his relationship with Jasmine suffers.
Meanwhile, when she is around the two of them Jasmine starts to feel like a third wheel. When she's tired of being lonely she tries to do something about it but she is blocked by Dante. He's looking out for her safety and tells her to be careful. One night when she decides to go for a walk, she walks past danger and they follow her and all she has are her feet, pepper spray and the will to stay alive.
The story ends on a cliffhanger, Book 2 is available, but honestly I'm not quite sure how I feel about this story, or characters—partly because they're all annoying and partly because it takes place sometime in the distant future.
Boy this this book was definitely different from my norm. I’m not used to the poor woman being the aggressor, finding after the unattainable man. I haven’t read a book like this in the years! It’s more sad though than pride robbing I guess I would say. It reminds me of teenagers when we all pinned for that boy that we couldn’t have or we were too nervous and embarrassed to tell that we liked this was definitely a story like that almost more teen based and maybe it is for all I know? All I know is Dante was the epitome of a perfect male specimen. It sounds like. His girlfriend lives and his best friend Jasmine both had instant crushes when they met him and followed throughout the years. I’m curious to see though if these two end up getting together because isn’t that the basis of the story? I’ll have to wait to find out. All in all a good introduction to this new to me, Author Alexandria Da Great. I wanna keep reading just to find out what happens, do they end up getting together? Or does she finally stop finding and get a little bit of self-respect and find someone else to love? Only time will tell!
Idk what to rate the book because it ended on a weird cliffhanger.
Jazzy has 2 best friends, Liz who she's known for about 7 years and was her roommate until she met and fell for and went to live with Jazzy's other bestie, and not so secret crush, Dante.
Now apparently, Jazzy has no life and no other friends except for Dante and Liz, as she is obsessed with Dante, and by association, Liz. Everything reminds her of Dante. And no other man can compare. He's the most beautiful man, the tallest and, she imagines, has the biggest D.
Now, even though J is obsessed with D and his D, D seems oblivious to her feelings, or is he? Because he sends a lot of mixed signals. He seems almost obsessed with her as well. And as for Liz, she goes from being a bestie to being in competition with J. for D's affections. Overall, this is just a low-key toxic story. but one in which i have become obsessed with.
How far will J and D push it before they "slip" into an affair? How much will Liz take before she gets tired of D's antics? Can J get a bf and a life? Time will tell.
This is my first time actually writing a review on here, but after reading this whole series I had to leave a review… This series had me at work talking and reacting to my imaginary audience !! lol.. I went from being pissed at something the characters were doing ( which you will be!!!) to actually smiling and laughing out loud at some of the things they do! I guess what I’m saying is this series is very entertaining! There were moments where I felt it was repetitive- with the back and forth- I want him, and I feel bad for wanting him parts- and don’t get me started on Liz!!😤… if you’re wondering if it’s worth a read- just know I started reading the series on Sunday and finished by Monday afternoon! lol… If you like spicy romance, angst, friends to lovers, sloowww burn, and don’t mind interracial relationships…. Give this series a try!
Unrequited love so cute but so repetitive that it could have been half its length. It read more like a stream of conscious inner thoughts recounting how much Jasmine love her taken best friend, Dante. I enjoyed the story, but it should have been less wordy. Story progression was slow.
I liked that Jasmine was a regular person, attractive but not the typical over the top gorgeous type. Of course, Dante was, and his attractiveness was flaunted at ever point his name arose.
Expect no sex between the friends, and really zero to no sev in the box. This was obviously set up as a series, and I’ll jump into the next one to see where it goes.
This is a love triangle with a side of unrequited love. This is one of those stories where you get frustrated because of the miscommunication. A honest conversation would’ve solved everything. Instead there is a lot of assumptions, unnecessary secrets, jealousy, pining and patheticness.
The MMC is an a*hole. The FMC is a doormat. The “best friend” is horrible and psychotic. The characters are deeply flawed but the story is interesting. I don’t know if it’s me wanting some type of character growth, redemption, or life change or if the story is just that well crafted but I’m invested.
Once again, lethal pen game. Even though Liz was a disliked character I was enamored with how we were able to watch her go crazy real time. It was such a unique and profound perspective to see what insecurity can do to someone from the inside out. Even though she wasn't wrong in her suspicion she pushed it further than it would have ever went. She basically forced him into a relationship. I was so impressed with the way Dante was able to handle the situation, I was so worried they weren't going to get their HEA.
Great characters, but if your expecting a friends to lovers book this may not be for you. This is a seriously slow burn book of friends to lovers, I think meant to stretch out over the entire series. Basically no hooking up and not much spice. The characters are likeable, and well fleshed out and the time period is in a future dystopia world of the USA post civil wars, which is interesting. But the main characters are a bit annoying as they navigate their feelings for each other through the book. Hopefully it gets better through out the series.
This book had a lot of potential, but the fact that she was sinking over a man that did not want her drove me insane. It is literally all she talked about. She had no other thought in her mind besides DANTE. Come on girl there’s other things in this world besides a man especially if that man don’t want you. Also a lot of mistakes and while I can overlook a mistake, the mixing up of the names made it confusing.
I enjoyed the book, its a quick read. I was annoyed by how much Jasmine obsessed over Dante. She seems like a smart girl, but I feel like the constant talk about Dante makes it seem like she's in junior high school. He's her friend and if he was into her, I feel like he would have told her already, but maybe their relationship will change but I feel like she's put her love life on hold waiting on him and she shouldn't..
Quite an unusual story. Dystopian angsty romance. I'm really enjoying the story and chemistry between the two main characters. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
Bad writing and the fml needs to get over this man truly u want to fuck him and he wants her but not her so he got the second best option just for him to regret it even though he swears he doesn’t okay sure sir 🙄
First off, I don’t know if I can do this. He clearly wants his cake and eat it to. I need for her to find someone for her. I don’t like Liz at all, she was clearly using Jazz to get to Dante. Who by the way is an a$$.
Now I'm not one to say a book is bad but.... there was just so much wrong with this. As bad as it was I want to read the next one because it ended on a cliffhanger and I feel like as much time as I invested I need to know what happens even tho I didn't like it😭😭
Wow. Ended on a crazy cliffhanger but I like this story so far. I can relate to the main char so much. Actually made me root for them. I need the second book though. . Hope it’s out soon
Very male centered, tried to get past Dante being her only thought but it became annoying, especially with the author trying to have a bit of world building but we didnt get much because Dante :/
