Mrs Sidhu’s Just Desserts

Rate this book
In this twisting and richly sauced mystery, will the proof be in the pudding?

It's the most glamorous event of the year. When Mrs Sidhu is hired as the caterer for the opening of Berkshire’s swankiest new art gallery, she can't believe her luck.

It's the biggest pay cheque of her career, a glitzy evening, and a chance to take her cooking to the next level in front of the local crème de la crème.

But there's trouble on the menu. Then the gallery's star painting is stolen. And worse than that, Mrs Sidhu's best and sweetest waitress – with her whole life ahead of her – is found dead.

Mrs Sidhu wants answers. As she casts her eye over Berkshire's art scene – the murderously competitive collectors, critics and creatives – she uncovers a dastardly knot of greed and deception, obsession and revenge.

Can she crack the strangest case of her career and unmask the murderer, so they can meet their just desserts?

Slough's answer to Miss Marple returns for another adventure. This time Mrs Sidhu steps into the art world, as she's employed to cater an exclusive gallery opening, only to find that this high-end, sophisticated booking leads her into investigating the ruthless murder of her waitress, Daisy, and the disappearance of a world-famous painting worth £12 million.
Can a widowed caterer take down a ruthless, murderous art thief and serve up "just desserts"?

This is a cleverly-plotted story with lots of twists, turns and red herrings, and, as ever, Suk Pannu's depiction of the endearingly eccentric and idiosyncratic Mrs Sidhu is spot on. Once again we find her assisting her sparring partner, Berkshire Constabulary's finest, DCI Burton, which offers the opportunity for several humorous scenes.

You may already know Mrs Sidhu from the earlier BBC Radio 4 series, which preceded her adventures in novel format, and of course there was the TV adaptation of Suk Pannu's first novel Mrs Sidhu: Dead And Scone, which I'd read previously.
I found this second Mrs Sidhu novel fun and entertaining. It's a delightfully warm and quirky cosy crime story, and I loved the puns and humour that thread through it.
It's the perfect antidote to wintry post-Christmas gloom, and a pleasant, entertaining distraction from the world's political psychodrama.

With sparks of attraction flying in this second instalment, it sets up potential for the development of Mrs Sidhu in any subsequent title, and I'm all here for it!

Thanks to HarperCollinsUK and Netgalley for the digital ARC, I really enjoyed it!

This was a thoroughly enjoyable, fun read, and the perfect antidote to these dark times we currently live in. Don't get me wrong, this is a murder mystery so yes, it has its serious side, but honestly peeps, Mrs. Sidhu is just a wonderful character. I really wish I had an "aunty" like her. Life would never be dull. 🍰
Mrs. Sidhu is a caterer, and she has been contracted to cater for a gallery opening. She is understandably nervous about the whole affair, but I doubt even she could have envisioned what would happen on the night. Murder and the theft of an extremely valuable painting. 🍰
Turns out Mrs. Sidhu has a very sharp mind (and an equally sharp tongue) and as the murder victim was one of her waitresses, she decides to investigate the events at the gallery. 🍰
There are suspects aplenty, and just as many twists. The story is fast paced, and peppered with humour. 🍰
I now have to go and get the first book in the series, which I appear to have missed. I definitely need more of Mrs. Sidhu's company. 🍰

To secure the contract to cater for a Gallery Opening, you have to produce a Swiss Roll and Custard to the exacting taste of the owner, Hector Keys. Mrs Sidhu realises that this makes no sense in a rational world, but perhaps people in the Art world aren’t rational? To be fair, she knows nothing about that world, in fact she knows nothing about Art. Anyway she has nothing to lose, because, even if she doesn’t get the contract, she will be paid £1000. Of course landing the contract would elevate her little local catering business to a new, more lucrative, level. Having won the contract, everything is going smoothly, she even gets a private viewing of “La Scaletta” the £12M pointillist painting which will be the star of the Opening show. However, when the room where it is hanging is opened to the public, “La Scaletta” has vanished, and Hector is lying unconscious. Mrs Sidhu’s favourite waitress, Daisy, is also lying nearby; but she is dead. DCI Burton, with whom she has previously solved (or as he would say ‘interfered with’) several cases, is quickly on the scene. As usual, he warns her not to get involved, but she cannot leave it to him, because Daisy’s death makes this personal.
Mrs Sidhu is an intriguing character, an Indian widow of a certain age with an analytical mind, an ideal protagonist for this complicated, and cunningly plotted, cosy(ish) crime story. She is obviously a member of the ‘eccentric investigator’ category – for example: where others have crime boards or other forms of recording devices, she has a more ad hoc system involving cards cut from old cornflakes packets, on which she writes her analyses in broad tipped Sharpie. Overall the story hangs together and is a good read and a good puzzle, mainly due to some surprising twists.

Netgalley Review

The writing was engaging from the beginning right through to the end. There were lots of little things happening throughout which kept my interest and kept me guessing as to who the murderer was.

The book was made up of 4 parts, each was then split into chapters. The chapters were a mix of lengths which helped to keep the story moving. The book opened with a Prologue which drew me in straight away. We then went back in time and carried on the story from there. From then on each chapter was numbered.

There was a good flow to the book. Once you read the Prologue and went back in time it was then a smooth transition throughout the rest of the book.

There was an interesting pace to the book. Whilst we kept moving, there were a few different possibilities as to how the crime was committed so we circulated round those options. We kept coming to dead ends before something else would pop up that made us move forward. This was an interesting technique that kept the mystery going.

The characters were excellent. I loved the main character and her quirks. She was determined to solve the mystery no matter what. There were a few suspicious characters who all could have had a hand in it at some point.

Occasionally the main character would produce a list that summarised what we had learnt about each suspect up to that point which was helpful. It also highlighted how in the dark the main character was about how the crime was committed.

Lastly the settings. Whilst it was mainly a character focused story there were some nice details that enhanced the story where necessary.

Overall an excellent second book.

If you are fans of Richard Osman's thrillers then maybe this book is for you.

Not very familiar with BBC Radio 4's Mrs. Sidhu's Investigates but this is the first book I have read from this author.

Mrs. Sidhu is hired as a caterer to provide desserts for a glamorous art event in Berkshire. While at the event, the most talked of painting was stolen and Mrs. Sidhu's beloved waitress was murdered and her own boss was found drugged. Mrs. Sidhu is now determined to find the perpetrator behind this so she could solve the robbery and murder even though she is putting her own life and career at risk.

This book is perfect for cozy mystery lovers. I like the diversity of the book as well--the main character Mrs. Sidhu is of Indian origin. Not only that--the whole book was unputdownable. There were twists and turns and so many suspects that one of them could be responsible for what happened. There were some funny parts in the book that will make you laugh out loud. It was also fast paced and I was literally hooked into the story, unable to put the book down.

I didn't also realize that this was the second book of the series so I am actually looking forward to read more from Mrs. Sidhu's series. Overall worth four stars.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Harper Collins for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.

I was really excited to read Mrs Sidhu’s Just Desserts by Suk Pannu. I had listened to the Radio 4 shows of Mrs Sidhu Investigates and loved them. I’d also thoroughly enjoyed the first book, Dead and Scone.

In this book, Mrs Sidhu, widow and resident of Slough who is also growing her catering business and has a side-hustle as an amateur detective wins a contract that appears too good to be true.

Her grown up son Tez, her husband’s friend Mr Varma all make appearances, as does DCI Burton.

I love this series as it is most definitely cosy crime with a great deal of warmth and humour thrown into the mix. Mrs Sidhu has great affection often in the Auntie sense to the characters she encounters which often translates in wanting to feed them up! I also loved the fish out of water element where this time Mrs Sidhu is thrown into the world of Art. As with everything, Mrs Sidhu does her homework and quickly learns about every aspect of art!

Without revealing any spoilers, I thoroughly enjoyed the ending! It’s totally set up for another book which I can’t wait to read.

Huge thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction | Hemlock Press, for making this e-ARC available to me in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Mrs Siddhu is in need of a cash injection and winning the contract for a gallery opening should be just the thing to fix it.

Hector Keys is the owner of the gallery and Mrs Sidhu quickly realises that the Art World is most definitely not her world especially when she gets a preview of “La Scaletta”, worth £12 million quid. When the painting goes missing and Mrs Siddhu's favourite waitress is found dead nearby, her crime sniffing goes into overdrive. DCI Burton doesn't know whether to laugh or cry when he sees she's mixed up in the case but warns her off getting mixed up in it.

I love Mrs Siddhu! She is the perfectly unobtrusive, nosy, tenacious amateur detective we all love. I really enjoyed learning all the new vocabulary and as much as I'd love to try some of her dishes, my poor palate cannot handle anything spicier than garlic, alas. Her little notes remind me of Humphry from "Beyond Paradise", I keep shouting at her to carry a proper notebook, lol. I enjoyed uncovering the clues, finding the twists in the tale and was happy to see the big bad unmasked. Taz really steps up in the book and he's finally growing up a bit.

Now awaiting our next escapade.

A cozy type mystery is not usually on my list but I am glad I gave this one a try. Caterer and amateur sleuth Mrs Sidhu surprised to be given the opportunity to cater for the opening of a prestigious gallery in a Berkshire village but of course nothing is what it seems and murder is soon on the menu. The victim is one of her staff and Mrs Sidhu feels the need to investigate against the wishes of the local police detective who it seems she has assisted previously. Perhaps reading the earlier book would have helped in the understanding the back story but not having done so did not detract from my enjoyment. The story is well plotted with twists and turns and makes for an interesting read.
I am certain that this book will appeal to lovers of cozy mysteries but aas I have found it can be enjoyed by a much wider base.

Mrs Sidhu’s Just Desserts by Suk Pannu

Mrs. Sidhu, a caterer with a sharp palate for clues, lands a prestigious contract for a high-profile art gallery opening. Her professional triumph quickly sours when a masterpiece vanishes from the walls and one of her waitresses is found murdered.
Caught in a high-stakes web of greed and deception, the amateur sleuth must navigate the murky art world to unmask a killer.

Having been captivated by this book, I am eager to read the author’s debut novel, Mrs Sidhu’s Dead and Scone, which I regretfully missed until now.

I would like to thank Net Galley and HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction / Hemlock Press Publishers for a copy of this eBook in exchange for an honest review.

Mrs Sidhu is back and in my opinion, better than before. I thoroughly enjoyed her latest murder mystery investigation and it felt as if Suk has really settled into her character. This book is really well plotted and kept me on my toes throughout, bravo! I loved getting to know more about Mrs Sidhu, Slough’s secret super sleuth, and seeing new sides to her character. Her relationship with DCI Burton is superbly drawn with great wit and warmth. I love a cosy murder mystery and having been somewhat on the fence about the first Mrs Sidhu story, I’m just so glad I came back for more. I’ll definitely be watching out for the next in the series!

What an enjoyable and fun mystery. This is not the first in the series featuring chef and amateur detective Mrs Sidhu, although it is the first I have read.

Mrs Sidhu is a fifty something mother, who can’t stay out of investigating events at an art gallery, at which she was the chef and one of her favourite waitresses was one of the victims. Ensconced in the art world, of which she knows nothing, she uses her skills to keep a check on Detective Burton, which whom she has a begrudging friendship.

Well written with humour and a good mystery running throughout, I will definitely be looking out for more in the series.

Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Mrs Sidhu is asked to cater the opening of an art gallery .
She is shocked and surprised to be asked but once the fee is disclosed she jumps at the chance .
The evening is going well until the main attraction is stolen and one of Mrs Sidhu’s staff is found dead .
She is observant , nosey and not willing to let anything go which enables her to be the perfect amateur sleuth .
This case is personal due to the death of Daisy so she needs to find out who is behind it!
This is a perfect cosy mystery and I couldn’t figure out who was behind the theft and murders. So it kept me guessing right until the end .
An entertaining and enjoyable read.
Looking forward to Mrs Sidhu’s next case .

Mrs Sidhu is invited to contract for the catering at the opening of a prestigious Thameside art gallery. After struggling for inspiration she hits on a theme but the evening is a bit a disaster as a valuable painting is stolen and a young waitress is murdered. Wracked with guilt Mrs Sidhu determines to find the perpetrator which brings her into contact with the members of the local police force.
This is just a really lovely cosy crime novel. Mrs Sidhu is an engaging character and her friends and family add to the mix. Here she is thrown into the world of art and her 'ignorance' about art helps to propel the narrative nicely. It's a really easy read that entertains throughout

This was a cosy mystery where Mrs Siddhu a caterer is also an amateur detective. She lands a job to cater for an art gallery opening and is offered a crazy amount of money. She wonders why it is so well paid. We follow her exploits through the gallery opening and for some time afterwards. When murders are committed she cannot rest until she finds out the truth. The story has quite a bit of humour and is an easy read, but it just didn’t hold my attention the way I had hoped.

Mrs Sidhu has been a force on both radio and TV, and now she comes in book form. She's like an Indian Agatha Raisin! She bumbles about getting a lot wrong and alienating many people before she actually sifts through the mess and gets to the killer.

This is the second book in the series but it works well enough as a stand alone novel. From what I can see, none of the characters are developed enough to require us to read the first book before this one.

I think I'll investigate the radio show and the TV programs before finding book one.

Enjoyable and light-hearted murder mystery - well worth a look.

Mrs Sidhu, a caterer, is called upon to cater an art exhibition in a private home. From this point on, things go way out of hand, resulting in her investigating murders and an art theft. There are a small number of suspects, all reasonably well-developed characters. DCI Burton is also involved in the investigation. The plot moves along at a good steady pace in this cosy crime novel and it's an enjoyable and worthwhile read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Mrs Sidhu is asked to cater a gallery opening after a quick trial.
On the night of the opening, her waitress is murdered and a painting worth £12 million has been stolen. The paintings owner was found unconscious
supposed drugged by Mrs Sidhu's food. Feeling guilty as she had begged Daisy to work for her even though she hadn't been feeling 100%, Mrs S is determined to find out what happened.
With many red herrings and new experiences for her, she winds her way through the duplicity of the art world to find out what really happened.
A nice fun read.

Mrs Sidhu has been hired to do the catering for a posh Art Gallery's opening night! However, a priceless work of art is stolen and a waitress has been found killed. Mrs Sidhu can't help herself with doing a bit of sleuthing to uncover the motive, means and the opportunity of these crimes without thinking how DCI Burton will react. It was entertaining, funny, full of twists and turns with a few red herrings thrown into the mix, gripping and unputdownable. The final reveal was a total surprise for me!

Thankyou harper Collins & NetGalley for this arc in exchange for my honest review, this was my first ever Mrs SIDHU book and it won’t be my last. I love how unapologetically funny and witty Mrs sidhu is, throughout the book she faces challenges and wanted to do was get her money and book a holiday, throughout the book I found myself smiling at the witty comedic effects of the book whilst trying to solve the mystery. I throughly enjoyed and would recommend

This was my first introduction to Suk Pannu’s writing and the delightful Mrs. Sidhu and it certainly won't be my last! Mrs. Sidhu’s Just Desserts had me gripped from the very first page. The plot is packed with twists and turns that kept me hooked, while the clever red herrings left me completely stumped yet eager to see what came next.

I’m thrilled to discover there are more stories in this series; I can’t wait to dive into the rest of Mrs. Sidhu’s world!

Mrs Sidhu's Investigates #3 continues this excellent cozy series. Mrs Sidhu will remind you of some of the more famous chef/detectives in fiction as she refuses to let the death of her favorite waitress be mismanaged by the police just because the suspects are rich and friends of the local political party. This is the first book I have read in the series, but it's so good, I need to read the first two. Give yourself a treat and read Suk Pannu's food centric series.

This is a fun read. I like the character of Mrs Sidhu, not exactly your normal detective and appreciate the fact that she is an older and fun protagonist. I have watched the show on BBC and the book is a welcome addition. The plot, set in the art world, is well crafted and the characters are fun. It's well written and reads like a train. I hope there will be more books in this series.

What a charming book. First one I have read and will read more. This was a fab holiday read – I really enjoyed it from start to finish. Mrs Sidhu is a widow and a caterer. She lives in Slough with her son who tends to be very lazy. On the side she feels she is good amateur detective much, in part, to the annoyance of the Police. Mrs Sidhu is asked to cater for a Gallery Opening but before she gets the job she has to produce a pudding for the owners to eat to see what her catering is like. They will pay her s£1,000 which is a lot of money to her. She produces, as asked, a swiss roll pudding which Hector Keys must have liked as she got the opportunity to cater for the opening. The main reason for the opening is for the people to see a piece of art called “La Scaletta”. Things move on and when the room is finally opened the painting has disappeared. Here starts the detective part of Mrs Sidhu. She is even more keen to solve the mystery as one of her staff, Daisy, has been murdered in the melee and this has upset her immensely. The story continues and the Police solve the complicated crimes with the help of Mrs Sidhu much to the Police’s irritation. There are many twists and turns which makes the book even more of a good read plus funny moments which make you smile
