Broken Fire Book 1 I’m Ryan Miller: football star, playboy, party animal. I have it all. Good looks, wealth, fame. And a football career every kid dreams of. My life should be perfect but it’s not. I drink too much. I fight too much. I wake up in bed with a different girl every morning. I’m looking for something. I just don’t know what. That is, until Pippa Anderson walks into my life. She’s beautiful, intelligent and might just be able to fill the big black hole inside my heart. But Pippa has a secret. Something she won’t tell me. Something she won’t tell anyone. I need to get her to trust me. Trouble is, I don’t know where to start. And do I want to know the truth?

Katy Baker was born in London to an English mother and an American father. She grew up a stone's throw from Hampstead Heath which remains one of her favourite places in the world. During her twenties she spent several years living in San Francisco where she developed an abiding love of bagels before returning to her beloved London. She lives in south London with her husband and a very grumpy bulldog.
Katy's books explore the intricacies of human relationships with plenty of spice thrown in. What would life be without a little spice?

My feelings about Ryan and Pippa’s story were mixed. I liked the way Pippa had a man in her past that made her wary of dating, and her attitude to life; she worked hard to be independent. Ryan, “football star, playboy, party animal” is believable, but the speed of the change in him isn’t. Pippa would make a great motivation to stop behaving badly, but Ryan doesn’t only sleep around and drink to excess: he drinks to the point where his parents see the only way to recovery as him joining a detox programme. If he’s that far down the alcoholism road simply deciding to drink in moderation would be impossible.
This book is technically well-written, with frequent, clear, changes of point-of-view, which provide both sides of Pippa and Ryan’s relationship without ever being repetitive. The basic idea is a winner, the sexual tension builds, and the sex scene, when it comes, a delight to read compared to many that rely purely on physical reactions and obscene language. The constant niggle at the back of my mind that a drunk couldn’t recover so fast spoilt my enjoyment and reduced a five star rating to three.
what the ***** did I read? This book is so boring, okay... so the characters have sex, think they're in love, then he finds out that she has a secret in her house.… WOW. Couldn't have been more of a wasted time.
