This was SUCH a fun time! I genuinely could not put it down.
The story follows Ivy who runs a secret self-defense class for women, alongside being a governess for Viscount Owen Brackley's half-sisters. As you read, you learn more about Ivy and why she runs this class or why she's a governess in the first place. There is also a plot of mystery in this book, following an outbreak of hysterical women, which Ivy must further investigate... because Owen may be connected to this outbreak?!
Truly no other genre does yearning like historical romances!!! Ivy and Owen fall into a fake-courting situation so that she can impress a specific suitor she wants to marry, and let me just say: the tension was tensioning!!!! 🤭🤭
I also loved that the characters had their distinct personalities and hobbies/interests outside of the romance of the story. Owen's passion for horses was so cute and funny 😭😭 And Ivy was an athletic and strong FMC who stood up for herself and could be fiery when need be! I loved that Owen saw her strength and always supported her.
I think the end felt a bit rushed with the mystery being wrapped up all at once and the confrontation with Ivy's father being so curt, but it was still such a fun time.
This was sooo addictive and reignited my obsession with historical romances, and I really hope we get a book about Barnes (Ivy's brother) soon 😗👀

Ivy is a young lady working as a governess in the Brackley household, for Owen's eight young half-sisters. While she's the granddaughter of a Marquess, her father is awful and has continually tried to marry her off to old, equally terrible men. In defiance she left her family home to find work for herself, knowing she can make her own way. She also secretly teaches self-defence to women, which is where she is approached by The Dove, who runs a network of governess spies.
Owen has been away from England for the majority of the last decade, living in Prussia and running his own horse breeding business. When his father dies and he inherits the title, he returns to his new responsibilities of the estate and his young sisters.
Owen and Ivy were very cute. They got along well after they sized each other up, and had some great banter and chemistry all the way through. I loved the scenes of Ivy coming to Owen's chambers while he was recovering, just to read him some gossip papers and tell him about the goings-on at the estate.
All of the scenes with Owen's younger sisters were adorable. They ranged from three to ten in age, and had been left to their own devices by their parents before Ivy showed up. Owen makes a continuous effort to show them all that they were loved and safe and honestly I ate it up. I wished we got more scenes with them all
There was a lot of plot going on here as well- women have been falling into 'hysteria' in London, which is why the Dove asked Ivy to spy on Owen. Then we have a whole other subplot of Ivy and Owen fake dating, so that Owen will not have to deal with matchmaking Mama's and Ivy won't be forced into a betrothal from her father. There was a ton going on but somehow it all felt seamless

Horsegirl mmc!!! Owen the man you are!! Sometimes the things he said were laid on a little thick, but his actions were A+++. The tension and chemistry between the Owen and Ivy was crazy from the start, those first interactions really shined. It did seem to fizzle out through the middle of the book (reason below >:| ) but luckily picked back up again.
The arrival of Barnes killed the vibe significantly. I wish there had been more of the little sisters and less of him. The persistent references to things he wouldn’t elaborate on got so old. He was a good brother though. Now, he simply has to make it up to me in a book about himself and Diane, because I do see potential in him!
I also loved the reappearances from previous book’s characters!

I have truly loved this series so much i love the concept of governess spies. I’m really hoping this continues because I need to know what happens with Barnes and Diane as well as who The Dove is.
Ivy is the governess for 8 lovely but lively young ladies. Everything is going fine until their brother, the new viscount, comes home from being away for a decade. Oh and her father wants her to marry men who are just horrible and she will not be doing that.
Owen sees just how special and fabulous Ivy is the minute he sees her with his sisters. He agrees to help her find a husband so she doesn’t have to marry her father’s choice. Only problem is, Ivy is also the sister of his best- friend, who know hates him.
Things get complicated quickly and I loved it!

What a wonderful twist on the "falling in love with the governess" story! Our main character, Ivy Bennett, is an aristocratic woman who escapes her father's attempts at match matching (with much older, creepy men) by working as a governess. She also teaches self-defense in secret and meets The Dove, the spy master for all the heroines in the Secret Society of Governess Spies series. Ivy agrees with work with The Dove to spy in the Brackley family.
Owen Brackley had recently ascended to his title and returned to England. Owen agrees to a fake courtship with Ivy to thwart his own match making mama. The Dove things Owen has something to do with bouts of "hysteria" affected society women.
I am a complete softy for cute kids in a romance story and this one has EIGHT. She takes on the eight daughters of the Brackley family. There are some wonderful scenes with the girls - especially when Ivy is teaching them to defend themselves and when Owen tries to know them better since he was out of the country for years.

My first book by this author, but her writing was really easy to fall into, and the characters she created had my interest piqued. Ivy is a governess by day and teaches self-defense classes to young women at night. The youngest of six brothers, nothing gets by her. And when her father attempts to marry her off to a cruel man, she runs away and accepts the position as governess to Lord Brackley’s eight youngest sisters. Owen immediately recognizes Ivy as his ex-best friend’s youngest sister, but can’t resist keeping her around since she’s charmed his sisters. And when the two are stuck in an inconvenient spot, they propose a fake courtship. For Owen’s benefit, it keeps his crazy stepmother off his back, and for Ivy, it allows her the chance to get in front of an actual suitor of interest. The plot set up is fun, if not a little outrageous, but it gets our players in a delicious forced proximity set up with a touch of the forbidden. From the jump, the chemistry is there, and you can feel the sexual tension dripping from the two. And for someone who’s not typically into “governess/gentleman” romances, this sooooo worked for me.
I thought Owen’s eight sisters were such an excellent addition to this novel. With such unique personalities, they brought humor and fun to this romance. They also served such a great purpose in bringing Owen and Ivy together and creating a connection beyond the physical.
Like all good grumpy-sunshine pairs, Ivy comes into Owen’s life and upends it for the better. Bringing light and laughter into his otherwise bleak and grumpy existence. Add in the mystery of why her brother hates him, and the dark shadow-y figure roaming around the property. There are enough villainous characters and nefarious activity to keep you on the edge of your seat. I was never bored reading this and was hooked from the first few chapters. I thought the steamy scenes were really well written and built a lot of sexy tension that was absolutely paid off on. As was the mystery for that matter! I felt like it unraveled nicely and had me guessing so many wild possibilities. The publishers mentioned fans of Sarah Maclean will enjoy this one, and I totally agree. The high-stakes plot, steamy tension, and delicious dialogue were wonderfully blended!

I thoroughly enjoyed it! It was easy to read and the characters were great. Ivy is a badass and I loved her character a lot. The interactions between Owen and his sisters are what made me fall in love with him.
I love this series because of the mystery solving aspect. However, I felt like this book was lackluster and a little rushed in that department. It would’ve been a 4 star for me if we were given more mystery solving. As a straight romance it was great!
I would still recommend this book (and the other two)! I’m very happy that I discovered this author and her books.

It was a cute continuation of the series. I did guess the twist pretty early on. I wish there had been more twists or more of a mystery behind it. That being said, I adored their romance. The MMC’s relationship with his sisters made me so happy. Overall, I definitely recommend this series to anyone looking for a smart, fun, spicy romance with a bit of mystery. I already can’t wait for the next installment. Thank you to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) via NetGalley for the ARC!

Lovise delivers another winner! Owen falls so hard. This is the perfect blend of fake dating and layered mystery. As it got closer to the end I wasn’t sure if Lovise was going to be able to wrap everything up in time, but she did and it worked. I’m sad to see this series come to a close because it’s been one of my favorites!

But I kept leaving and coming back to this one. The setup is convoluted, the pacing is uneven, plot points are contrived, and the mystery element is slow to build.
Owen’s characterization felt inconsistent, beyond just running hot and cold for Ivy. I expect a series to setup the next book, but this one had a lot of Diane and Barnes.
I was surprised by the hand necklace flirtation. That’s a bit darker than I like and out of the blue for this series. It feeds into Owen’s interests, but it was jarring for someone who doesn’t read that sort of open door. It made me fearful of what the open door scene would be like when we finally got there.
Despite the plot and pacing fumbles, Ivy is likable. I wish we got more info on the Dove in each book, but that doesn’t seem to be happening.
I’m still curious about the next book since I liked the first two l, but I’ll read reviews first.

Opposite her is Owen, Viscount Brackley, who serves as the perfect "grumpy" foil to Ivy’s "sunshine" (even if her sunshine has a bit of a bite). This book did several of my favorite microtropes so well. First, we have a man with tons of sisters. I eat that up in historical romance. Owen was raised an only child and left England before his oldest sister was born. He comes home to eight little girls ranging in age from three to ten, and he is suddenly responsible for their well-being and education. I was obsessed. Then we have the Bad Dads of Historical Romance. Both Ivy and Owen have terrible fathers, and I loved watching them bond over that experience and then figure out how to carve their own paths forward. Finally, we have the Regency equivalent of “my wife” when Owen yells at the butler that Ivy is “mistress of the house” and can do whatever she wants. Again, obsessed.
I really enjoy Lindsay’s writing in both her paranormal and historical romances. She does a great job building characters and a world we can really sink into. This series falls into the trend of historical romance with mystery subplots we’ve been seeing lately, many of which are also published by Forever. The mystery was more prevalent in the first two books of the series, really driving the plot forward. In this book, it’s more of a menacing backdrop to the unfurling romance. I liked that dynamic more, as it gave the characters and their connection room to breathe.
Lindsay’s contract was not renewed for another book, so at this point, this is the end of the road for the Secret Society of Governess Spies series. I was really hoping we’d see Ivy’s best friend and brother get a book since there is CLEARLY something going on between them, but unless Lindsay can go indie with those characters, I don’t know if that will happen. It’s really sad to see someone who is writing exceptional historical romance—and clearly loves this genre—not move forward with more books from her publisher. But as I let her know a couple of months ago when this news came out, I will follow her wherever she goes.
Never Spar with a Viscount was an absolute delight. 5 stars.

I need more ⭐️!! If I could give more than 5 ⭐️s I would BECAUSE man was Owen the king of grumpy heroes with the kindest heart for those he cares for. As a self proclaimed grump I am usually like 'woah' to the sunshine characters but honestly I just want to be Ivy.
We all love an independent strong kick butt FMC in HR & self-defence teacher/governess Ivy Bennett is one! I can’t get over how much she worked for what she believed in even if it was in covert ways. From the apartment above the modest teaching women how to defend themselves to the field fencing “prayer circles” with Owen’s 8 half-sisters. After her childhood experiences with abuse she strove to help others defend themselves. I just adored the moments where they had to quickly hide the wooden swords & were questioned about how rigorous prayer circle was. I also LOVED the reactions of both Ivy & Owen when they made discoveries. Owen's of the self-defence with his sisters as well as how Ivy did in fact disarm the highwayman. AND Ivy's reaction to finding out the reason for the hatred her brother had with Owen. Honestly, I was so happy with her & how she handled it. Lady vanquished that possible miscommunication trope!
I loved Owen, enter my latest book husband! There was so much self doubt tied up in his feelings about being back in his family home. A place which had been a source of mental abuse for him. How he was able to connect with his sisters & the moments during when he forced to stay in bed - those sickbed scenes were everything. I liked how he admitted his faults & how he could be consumed with something (ahem - Ivy) & how it drove his actions. The fake courting & when he started calling Ivy Lady Brackley when she wasn't had me gleefully giggling. OH OH & how he was ready to threaten anyone who slighted Ivy in any way was 🥵
I have adored this series! The suspense & mystery which fuel the plot enhancing the romance. It is the perfect balance that kept me hooked until the very end of the story. Although I was not wanting it to end as I am unsure if there are future books in this series. I truly hope there is more as we have yet to find out the identity & backstory of the Dove & the enemies to hopefully lovers tension b/w Diane & Barnes! It is such a great concept with hiring governess as spies who end up falling in love with someone associated with the case or the initial suspect.
Okay, I am not always one for kids in books if they detract from the story but Owen’s little sisters were everything! The moment in the school room where Owen is truly introduced to them, asking them what they think of Miss Barnes, made me teary. And his POV later of totally falling in love with them at first sight had my heart melting.
As the 3rd book in the series & I loved how we do get to see couples from the previous books. How they work together to figure out the mystery surrounding the 'catching hysteria' attached to sightings of Owen. Lovise truly packs a lot in this novel. Her writing has become one of my favourites to read in historical romance. May this series only be the beginning to more historical romance written by her.

There is something deeply comforting about opening a historical romance and immediately sensing you’re in capable hands, and this book gave me that feeling within the first few pages. This story is cozy in the way only a sharp, character-driven romance can be, while also being clever, slightly unhinged, and quietly furious about the limitations placed on women. Which, frankly, is my favorite flavor. I came for the fake courtship and stayed for the governess-led spy work, the sisterly chaos, and the emotional slow burn that refuses to be rushed.
Ivy Bennett is the kind of heroine I want to hand to people who claim historical romance heroines are boring. She is observant, practical, emotionally guarded for very good reasons, and absolutely done with men making decisions for her life. Her refusal to be molded into something smaller is the backbone of this story. I loved how her independence wasn’t treated as a quirky trait but as a necessity for survival. The secret self-defense classes alone made me want to stand up and applaud, but what really sold me was her quiet compassion and loyalty to other women. Ivy notices who is overlooked. She steps in. She doesn’t ask permission.
Owen Brackley, our reluctant viscount, is the perfect counterbalance. He’s reserved, duty-bound, and so deeply unsure of his own worth that it sneaks up on you. Watching him learn how to be a brother to his many younger sisters was genuinely heart-melting, and those scenes added so much warmth to the story. His growing respect for Ivy, not just as a romantic interest but as an equal, felt earned and deeply satisfying. The fake courtship trope was handled beautifully here, full of delicious tension, dry humor, and moments where pretending starts to feel dangerously close to the truth.
The mystery subplot threads neatly through the romance, raising the stakes without overshadowing the emotional core. I enjoyed trying to piece things together alongside Ivy, even when the danger escalated in ways that made me want to yell at everyone involved to please stop being so brave for five minutes. The pacing felt balanced, the twists were engaging, and the overall plot never lost sight of the characters at its center.
What really stood out to me was the tone. This book is witty without being flippant, romantic without being saccharine, and cozy without losing its bite. It made me laugh, made me soft, and made me furious on Ivy’s behalf more than once. The banter sparkles, the chemistry simmers, and the emotional payoff is worth the wait.

If you love historical romance with capable heroines, fake dating that turns painfully real, found family vibes, and just enough danger to keep things interesting, this one absolutely delivers. I finished it smiling, a little swoony, and already missing these characters.

Owen and Ivy have both survived awful fathers and have lived life on their own terms. I thought the author did a great job of describing the abuse they endured without being graphic, so even sensitive readers should be able to enjoy this story. In addition to Owen and Ivy, there are a lot of entertaining secondary characters, including Owen’s 8 young sisters, Ivy’s brother Barnes and her friend Diane, who all add a lot of laughter and lightness to this story. The book has wonderful characters, a great mystery, secrets, steamyish love scenes, witty banter, adorable little girls, suspense, surprising revelations and finally a happy ending complete with an epilogue. I really enjoyed this story and would happily recommend this title to my fellow HR readers. This is the third book in the series, but it could easily be read as a standalone title with no problems.

This was my first book by this author, and I truly enjoyed her writing style and character development. Although I haven’t read the previous books in the series, I never felt lost or as though I was missing important context, this story stands well on its own.
Ivy, the youngest sister among six brothers raised by a cruel father, becomes a governess to avoid being forced into marriage with an older, equally cruel man. She takes great pride in teaching Lord Brackley’s “unruly” younger sisters and even leads self-defense classes for women in the evenings. The beginning of the story feels like Bridgerton meets Kingsman, as Ivy is invited to become a spy by a mysterious woman known only as “The Dove.”
When Lord Brackley, Owen, returns to his estate, he’s surprised to find Ivy, the youngest sister of his estranged former best friend, in his employ. Despite the complicated history, he keeps her on staff. The two soon realize they can benefit from a mutually advantageous arrangement: a faux courtship to keep matchmaking mamas at bay, protect Ivy from a forced marriage, and give her the freedom to find a partner of her own choosing.
I absolutely loved the main characters and found them delightful to read. Their relationship develops on a deeper level than mere physical chemistry, which made their connection feel authentic and earned. The plot weaves in a mysterious thread involving spreading hysteria in London and questionable business dealings. While there are moments when it feels like a lot is happening at once, I was completely enraptured and eager to keep turning the pages.
The tropes may be familiar, but the author’s approach makes them feel fresh and engaging. Beyond the central romance, I especially appreciated the contrast between Ivy’s brooding, opinionated older brother, who adds tension to the story, and Owen’s charming younger sisters, whose warmth helps draw the main characters closer together.
The publisher suggests that fans of Bridgerton will enjoy this book, and as someone who loves both historical romance and a touch of mystery, I wholeheartedly agree. This was a delightful blend of intrigue, historical fiction and romance.

I absolutely loved the main characters and found them delightful to read. Their relationship develops on a deeper level than mere physical chemistry, which made their connection feel authentic and earned. The plot weaves in a mysterious thread involving spreading hysteria in London and questionable business dealings. While there are moments when it feels like a lot is happening at once, I was completely enraptured and eager to keep turning the pages.
The tropes may be familiar, but the author’s approach makes them feel fresh and engaging. Beyond the central romance, I especially appreciated the contrast between Ivy’s brooding, opinionated older brother, who adds tension to the story, and Owen’s charming younger sisters, whose warmth helps draw the main characters closer together.
The publisher suggests that fans of Bridgerton will enjoy this book, and as someone who loves both historical romance and a touch of mystery, I wholeheartedly agree. This was a delightful blend of intrigue, historical fiction and romance.

Ivy is the governess to 8 young girls, all between 10 and 3 years old, during the day; some nights of the week, she is a self-defense instructor for women. During one of her classes, Ivy is approached by The Dove to look into her boss, Lord Brackley, as he seems to have some kind of connection to the women of the ton who have recently been institutionalized for 'hysteria'. Lord Brackley, Owen, loves 3 things: his alone time, his horses, and the 8 younger sisters he has just met for the first time. After reconnecting with Ivy, the younger sister of his previous school friend Barnes, Owen is contemplating adding a 4th thing. Due to circumstances, Ivy and Owen agree to fake court to solve their problems.
I had a lot of fun reading this one. I am always a little wary of children in books, but these kids were all really fun and felt like actual kids. I especially felt for Ophelia, the oldest girl. Ivy was, of course, so good with them as their governess and as someone who cared for them. From our knowledge of Owen, we expect him to be standoffish, but as soon as he meets his sisters, he is so devoted to them and their happiness. It was very sweet. Ivy's brother, on the other hand, was a piece of work most of the time. It took so long to find out what happened to sour the friendship between him and Owen and when we did I was like "uhhh what?" and so was Ivy haha. Barnes did end up growing on me by the end, thankfully, as it does seem he might be next up.
The romance was cute enough. Owen was overly jealous at times, which isn't my favorite thing. I don't mind a bit, but it was like all the time. I feel like their personalities mesh well and it will be successful in the long run. Owen does have certain...proclivities and the author handles them well.
The mystery was interesting, but I felt like it took a backseat for a while in the middle of the book and maybe wrapped up just a little too quick in the end.
I am having a good time reading this series, and I am excited for more books! We have to figure out the Dove!

4.5/5 This has been a great series and this might be my favorite. I’m sad this concludes the series as I’d been hoping we might get a story about the mysterious leader of Perdita’s Governess Agency, The Dove. It goes out with a bang though and manages to blend a lot of different tropes well.

She'd rather work as a governess and fencing instructor than marry. Her newest position, it turns out, is in the home of the new Lord Brackley, who The Dove suspects may have some deep dark secrets. He and Ivy strike up a bargain that could benefit them both, but who do you trust when nothing is as it seems?
I enjoyed this novel! Lord Brackley, AKA Owen, is thrust into a father figure type situation, so readers who enjoy the single father trope will rejoice! Never Spar with a Viscount has everything I love in a romance: a grumpy sunshine pair, fake dating, some seduction lessons, and chemistry for days. And with a dash of mystery and intrigue, Lindsay Lovise wraps up this story in a wonderfully bonkers historical fashion.

She teaches Lord Owen Brackley’s eight unruly sisters, who turn out to enjoy her self defense classes as well as traditional lessons. Then the mysterious Dove asks her to spy on the Viscount and see if there really is a connection between him and a number of society women who are being sent away for “hysteria.” Naturally the best way to get closer to Owen is to begin a fake courtship which benefits them both. And no real feelings will come into play, not even during their seduction lessons, no way.
Ivy and Owen have amazing chemistry, and their mutual attraction is clear to everyone except each other. The way Owen respects Ivy and her opinions from the outset is a delight, as is Owen’s relationship with his younger sisters. I also adore the way Ivy stands up for herself and what she believes in, no matter how precarious the situation.
I love the governess spies and their quest to help women who have very few options. This series is one of the historical series I always recommend, since the characters are strong and earnest, yet still women of their time. It doesn’t hurt that all the couples are great together too.
Lindsay Lovise writes amazing historical romances. I adore Never Spar with a Viscount, and this entire series which empowers FMCs while keeping to the constraints of their time period. I’m only sorry that this book will be the last in a wonderfully addictive series.

3.5 stars just rounded up. I'd give the first half of this 3 stars and the second half 4. I loved MMC Owen's younger sisters; his interactions with them were probably the highlight of the early chapters for me. Owen is a grump with a heart. And MFC Ivy is fine; not quite a Mary Sue, just easygoing considering the attitudes around her.
Otherwise the pacing started on the slow side. I didn't get a strong sense of chemistry between the MC's until later, and the abrasive secondary characters bogged down the fun. Owen's stepmom was bad enough, but throw in a possible love interest (who disappeared from the storyline later), plus Ivy's obnoxious brother, and it was a bit much.
The pace did pick up in the second half, though, as did the steam. I'm not into Owen's kink but the author kept it low-key and completely consensual, which I appreciate.
There are two mysteries plot-wise: why are people mistaking Owen for someone else, and why are women throughout the Ton apparently suffering from "hysteria" after supposedly spending time with him? I enjoyed the spooky tone of both subplots. They're not flawlessly resolved, but I did like how Ivy's character was shown to be strong and capable without going overboard. I'm not sure I quite got a handle on Owen but he's still an interesting character.
Overall: a perfectly readable HR, especially in the second half.

I loved this addition to the Governess Spies series. In this book we have governess Ivy Bennett and viscount Owen Brackley. Ivy is appalled at the idea of being married off to an old evil man, so she takes matters into her own hands and takes on a governess job. As she is teaching a secret self defense class, she is approached by a woman only known as “the Dove”, who asks if she would be willing to join her secret spy network, and try to get information on her employer. Owen is a man who reluctantly agreed to come back and take over as viscount after his father’s passing. He has 0 interest in taking this on, but feels he can’t abandon all the people who depend on him for a job, and his 8 young step sisters. As he is learning the estate and meeting his staff, he is not very happy to learn the governess is the sister of his former best friend. And things really get ugly when his former best friend comes to town to try to pull his sister away from Owen and the girls. Ivy doesn’t want to leave the girls, or face marriage, and Owen does not want his sisters to lose the first person to make them feel safe. So he offers a deal, that he will pretend court Ivy to help her escape the proposed marriage and help her find a better match. And as often happens in these fake dating schemes, the lines between real and fake soon start to blur. Yet in the background there are lies, a mystery, and lots of miscommunication. Watching the two of them circle each other was a delight. This was a great addition to the series, and I hope one day we get the Dove’s story! I received an ARC, and this is my honest review.

This was a fun fake dating Regency romance with a strong heroine and a mildly grumpy horseboy viscount!
The relationship between the FMC and MMC developed quickly but was still overall enjoyable. The light dom elements kind of caught me off guard and are not really my cup of tea but it was fairly minimal. I was annoyed her central complaint was that men were always trying to control her life and he kept saying he wasn't like the other boys, but he then he kept trying to tell her what to do (beyond the bedroom).
The FMC's brother's shtick was very annoying very quickly. The middle of the story felt like a never ending loop of the leading men telling the FMC what to do despise claiming they would never do such a thing. The villains also felt very two-dimensional and were comically nefarious. The drama kookiness, however, reminded me of old school historical romances in the best kind of way, so it was an entertaining read. My favorite relationships were the FMC with her pupils, both child and adult, and the FMC with the staff of the house.
I haven't read the earlier books in this series and was able to read this book just fine. I don't know if I would read the next in the series because it's clearly and the brother who was so boorish, but I would read the previous books in the series. If you want a fresh historical romance with a very competent and physically capable heroine, I think you'll enjoy this! Please note that there is discussion of domestic violence and childhood abuse.

The gorgeous cover of Lindsay Lovise’s latest Historical Romance novel caught my eye, and I was excited to read this story about a non-traditional heroine. Ivy is desperate to escape the Ton and the Marriage Mart, so she accepts a governess position for the Brackley children. She is intrigued by the new Viscount, Owen, who just inherited the title and moved back to the family estate. Owen admires her care and efforts to instruct his sisters, and Ivy is fascinated by his kind and perceptive nature.
For various reasons, they decide to have a fake courtship, though they don’t acknowledge their mutual attraction. While Ivy and Owen have intense physical chemistry, their banter felt stilted and I didn’t feel a deep emotional connection between them. Their relationship would have felt more authentic with more intimate scenes throughout the book, not just in the last 25% of the story. The mystery part of this story was predictable though somewhat entertaining.
Overall, I enjoyed the characters in this book, and it was a satisfying read. Thank you to Lindsay Lovise, Forever/Grand Central Publishing, and NetGalley for an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I love this book so much! I requested it on a whim based on the book description. This was the first book I've read by this author, and I'm excited to see that there are two books that proceed this in a series... I know what I'll be reading next! That being said, while there might be some storyline carryover from those two prior books, I don't feel like I missed anything and this book stood as a true standalone.
The heroine is from a family that expects a lot from her. As a last-minute saving grace she takes a job as a governess aka "nanny". When the older brother of the kids that she cares for shows up out of nowhere, the heroine does her best to go with the flow of it all. She is one spunky female though and has so many different tricks up her sleeve! She secretly teaches the girls how to defend themselves, has been working with her peers (check prior books?) to solve crimes, and is quite honestly doing everything she can to evade inevitable marriage to saggy old bald men.
She has to be one of my favorite heroines I've read in a long time because she is so tenacious, spunky, and the type of gal you'd want in your corner for any battle. The way that she and the hero fall together so seamlessly was intoxicating! From the soft touches to kisses and all their first explorations. But the way that this man treated her!! The way that this man knew exactly which buttons to push to make her purr and was eager to do everything in his power to please her...damn I loved It all. The bit of suspense that runs throughout this book was plotted just right to keep me intrigued.

If The Sound of Music is a formative piece of media for you, then you will also love this story. The Governess falling for her employer is clearly the first trope that 5 year old me was exposed to, and I love it to this day. Add in that this Governess and Viscount are also in a courtship of convenience? Immediately sold.
I love a strong heroine in any historical novel, so of course I’m a fan of Ivy. Teaching other women, and Owen’s sisters, self-defence so that they can always fight back like she couldn’t is so good of her. And she loves those little girls so much, she is the first person to have ever treated them like they are worth something.
Owen, despite being a reluctant Viscount and a brother of 8 younger sisters, is such a good man. He immediately wants to get to know his sisters, starts fixing up the estate so they have a nice place to live, and he suggests this fake courtship with Ivy so she doesn’t have to marry the cruel man her father wants her to? Yeah, he’s a good one.
Was this cheesy? Yeah, sometimes maybe it was. But it was full of heart too, which is what counts. And the mystery! That was a great addition and well executed.
Now, while I anxiously await a book for Barnes and Diane, I will definitely be reading the previous 2 books in this series.

What a fun read! I especially enjoy intrigue and mystery blended with historical romance. Never Spar With a Viscount has that in spades. We begin with Ivy Bennett, a daughter of a Marquess, who nevertheless wishes to be independent and never marry. She takes on a job as Governess to eight (!) girls so she is not dependent on her father. She also secretly teaches a self defense class for women so they can defend themselves against violent men. There’s ALSO an underground league of governess spies led by a mysterious woman only known as The Dove. Meanwhile, we have Owen, who has recently become Viscount Brackley, after his father died. He is the older brother of those eight girls. While there are multiple mysteries weaving their way through this novel, the romance between these two is never given short shrift. For mutual benefit, Ivy and Owen devise to have a fake courtship through the London season. They soon develop real feelings for each other. It was especially poignant when they trust each other enough to confess the traumas they endured at the hands of their tyrant fathers. And that doesn’t even get into another relationship that I found was just as compelling as our main couple: the falling out of former best friends Owen and Barnes, Ivy’s brother. There are many threads to this story. All of them well done. Lindsay Lovise is a historical romance author to watch!
