As free-spirited as he is chaotic, Charlie's rules to art and relationships are as follows: 1) get messy and 2) move on to the next piece. He lives for the thrill of the new, on canvas or in bed, and just because he's over 30 doesn't mean he needs to settle down. When a pretty boy wearing a scowl and a skirt, upends Charlie's life, he brings one more rule: don't fall in love. But when feelings splatter and paint spills, Charlie has to decide if his rules still apply.
Eden Montgomery: Nothing in life is permanent. That Eden knows to be true. A safe haven baby abandoned into a broken foster care system that didn’t know how to handle a queer, gender non-conforming kid, Eden’s used to being discarded and used. At twenty years old, Eden’s clawed his way out of his traumatic past with paint chipped nails, a myriad of invisible scars, and mismatched tattoos. He doesn’t want or need anyone new in his life, but when a free spirited artist who isn’t put off by Eden’s prickly exterior finds his way past Eden’s defenses and into his heart there’s only one thing left for Eden to figure out, if he’s willing to risk everything for love or if he’s going to do what he’s always done—run.
Break the Rule is a character-driven, fast burn, standalone MM romance. It is the third book in the Kings of Heart series, each featuring one of the four King brothers on their sometimes messy, sometimes tender paths to happy ever after. Break the Rule features a chaotic playboy artist who falls into limerance and love with an equally queer, closed off black cat type. Get ready for an emotional rollercoaster, a runaway and someone willing to give chase, and eventually a guaranteed HEA.
Lucky writes character-driven, contemporary mm romance. Her debut novel CROSS THE LINE came out in 2024, and began the series “Kings of Heart”, each featuring one of four brothers on their sometimes messy, sometimes tender paths to happy ever after. MAKE THE PLAY, coming 4.23.25 continues this series of interconnected standalones.
Lucky is a millennial who grew up on fanfic, a lifelong West Coast resident, and a Canva Pro enthusiast. Queer and neurodivergent representation is deeply important to her as a member of both communities, and she loves exploring intersectional experiences through her fiction as a writer and a reader.

okay so this is my first ever ARC review, but i knew that i absolutely had to sign up when Lucky posted it. “Make the Play” is my favorite book ever. i was really nervous that nothing would be able to live up to it, but this one is on the same level. i shouldn’t have been worried bc Lucky has proved yet again that she is a master at character and plot development.
this book gave me something that the first two didn’t: a deeper look inside of the twins’ relationship with one another. i love charlie and andrew’s dynamic, and when you add eden to the mix, it was amazing. it was clear from the beginning that charlie’s love interest would need to view andrew as a friend and family member, not just treat him as being tolerated. Lucky did a fantastic job at showing this, even before eden and charlie’s relationship even began. i mean the first scene had charlie’s hook up being acephobic and twincesty toward andrew. that’s an immediate “i hate you” from both charlie AND me.
i wasn’t sure how i was going to love a relationship as much as jason and emerson, but i think charlie and eden’s is just as loved by me (but in a very different way). jason and emerson are both sweeties and adorable. while eden and charlie have moments where they are sweet and/or adorable (eden, pls don’t tell me to “fuck off” bc i said that, i’m sorry!!), charlie and eden have more banter. i loved their banter and interactions so much.
have y’all listened to “the fate of ophelia” from taylor swift’s new album? bc it literally makes me think of charlie and eden!! quotes from taylor’s song that remind me of them: ✨”And if you’d never come for me, I might’ve drowned in the melancholy. I swore my loyalty to me, myself, and I, right before you lit my sky up.” ✨”All that time I sat alone in my tower, You were just honing your powers, Now I can see it all. Late one night, You dug me out of my grave and Saved my heart from the fate of Ophelia.” ✨”don’t care where the hell you’ve been, ‘cause now your mine. It’s ’bout to be the sleepless night you’ve been dreaming of.” ✨”And if you'd never come for me, I might've lingered in purgatory. You wrap around me like a chain, a crown, a vine. Pulling me into the fire.” ✨”No longer drowning and deceived. All because you came for me.” ✨”You saved my heart from the fate of Ophelia.”
in other news, i never agreed with how charlie still treated theo and his relationship with alec, so i was obvi on alec’s side during this argument. it was completely reasonable (even with the casserole casualty) and i especially enjoyed seeing theo comfort alec. charlie was def in the wrong here and it’s interesting to not side with the main character on this. charlie should have told alec, and i get why he didn’t, but it definitely was unwise to wait until the day of.
the climax involving andrew’s past trauma with that acephobic asshole was absolutely needed, but still sad to read. eden’s realization of who it was and the way they handled zach really made me proud of both of them. eden being angry at charlie for andrew’s sake was amazing. like he truly cares about andrew and will stand up against anyone for him—even charlie. and the fact that charlie didn’t even know about it just shows how much andrew is the “oldest sibling who struggles in silence and feels responsible to help everyone else”. i’m sooo excited for his book (and his hockey player?).
this book really just proved how much i love all the king bros and can’t wait for andrew’s turn. i need to see him be accepted and loved in a way that his brother’s aren’t able to do. (or andrew doesn’t allow them to do.) i really hope i get to be an ARC reader for it.
oh also, Lucky, can we get a bonus of eden meeting the parents from eden’s pov? i’m so excited to read andrew’s book. i just know it’s gonna hit me hard, as i relate to him a lot (as a fellow older sibling that takes care of everyone).
The rest of this review is basically just quotes from the book and my thoughts when I read them. i literally had 77 highlights, so i’m going to include the most notable below (RIP the highlights about how crocs are a superior shoe and Eden's friendship with Andrew). note: 🎨 means it’s charlie’s pov and 💄 means it’s eden’s pov (still third person for both). also, there weren’t any crocs/converse or energy drink emojis, or else i would have used those. if there is also a 🌶️ emoji with it, that means it’s spicy on some level (though, I didn't include the spiciest scenes, but if you like consensual degradation, you should really check out this book!). [Brackets] mean that it is my own thoughts on what I just quoted.
💄(p. 47) His gender isn’t reliant on his strict adherence to made up social norms, and he’s just fucking tired of having to pretend he doesn’t care how much people look at him. [My enby heart agrees fully.]
🎨(p. 63)“You are the nosiest asshole I’ve ever met,” Andrew snorts. “Did you know that?” “Yes, I did. You should get me a shirt that says ‘nosy asshole and proud of it.’” “The horrible thing is you’d probably wear it.” Charlie pretends to mull the idea over, but there’s really no question, and the answer is easy. “Damn right I’d wear it.” “Guess you know what you’re getting for Christmas this year.” [I really love their brotherly dynamic.]
🎨(p. 71)“What if I don’t want to leave?” Charlie protests, despite agreeing with Andrew. There’s like a little flaw in his brain where even when he agrees with someone, he needs to argue about it first. “I wanted to see Emerson in a suit.” “I’ll throw the entire couch at you if you don’t leave,” Jason says in a tone that Charlie probably shouldn’t test. He tests it anyway. “You’re kind of testy when you’re in love.” [I love seeing Jason and Emmy scenes through Charlie's perspective. Also, Jason being threatening violence, then thirty minutes later being all sweet to Emmy and telling him they can go home to eat peanut butter sandwiches and watch LOTR.]
🎨🌶️(p. 103)“Are you a good boy, Charlie?” “Fuck no,” Charlie laughs. “But I am a respectful one.” “Being good is overrated anyway,” [I really love the “respectful” disclaimer. This might be one of my favorite responses to this question.]
🎨(p. 145)“Fine, I earn you some money, and you put up with me because you and Denise are obsessed with Andrew.” “All lesbians need their emotional support queer man.” [yes, i agree that andrew king is this.]
🎨🌶️(p. 214)“You have such a pretty mouth, Charlie…[some words between Eden saying this] You know what it’s good for, don’t you?” “Telling you how beautiful you are?” Charlie smirks, unable to resist a bit of playful teasing. Especially because it’s true. [This made me laugh and I could fully picture the scene in my head.]
💄(p. 223) “Because you’re weird,” Eden blurts. “Fair.” Charlie’s smile widens. “Being weird is great. Keeps all the normies away.” “Are you saying I’m not normal?” “Nope. But that’s a good thing.” “Why’s that?” Eden asks, heart pounding when Charlie suddenly inches into his personal space, towering over him. He’s stupidly tall and stupidly handsome with his stupidly bright smile, and Eden isn’t sure if he wants to hit him or kiss him or maybe cry. “It’s why I like you.” Five words. Five little words. “Shut up, Charlie.” [yes, i embrace the weird in me too. i needed to include this bc of that and bc it was cute.]
💄(p. 297) His body is a buffer, not a weapon, and something in Eden shatters into so many fucking pieces, he’s not sure how the fuck he’s ever going to put them back together. [This line hit me hard.]
🎨(p. 316) “You’re the best, you know that?” “Of fucking course I know that,” Alec says, expression brightening. “You’re all so goddamn lucky to have me. Mom and Dad’s accidental pregnancy was the best thing to ever happen to this family. You’re welcome.” [Oh Alexander King, how I love you for being exactly who you are.]
💄(p. 331) Is this what it’s like to have supportive parents? “Mama, it has a bow,” Sawyer exclaims, crawling closer to Eden. “I want a bow!” “I’ll get you a bow,” she tells him, her smile so wide it breaks something in Eden. What would it be like to be a child and be so loved? To be accepted? [This whole scene meant the world to me. I loved the callback to Eddie’s kid wearing skirts and how supportive Sawyer’s parents were. Also, broke my heart when Eden reacted to it, because he DESERVED to have had this growing up.]
🎨(p. 361) “Do you ever get tired of being right?” Charlie sighs. “Nope,” Andrew replies with a self-satisfied grin. [I am Andrew in this entire scene. Also, the fact that Alec compared Eden to Theo was needed and I really didn’t think about it until he said it. Oh and I loved that Andrew was going to schedule them an intervention if they didn't make up within another day.]
💄(p. 369) “Fuck you, Charlie King.” Eden slams his fists into Charlie’s chest, desperately, painfully, dizzyingly angry at this goddamn man for making him care. “I hate you so much for making me want things I have never, ever wanted. I hate you for making me laugh. I hate you for holding me. I hate you for wearing stupid clothes I can’t hate. I hate you for coming back again and again, even when I run. I hate you so much because…because I don’t hate you. Why can’t I hate you?” [This is my love language.]
💄(p. 371) “…My life was black and white without you, Eden.” “Charlie.” “You’re my color, Eden Montgomery. You make everything brighter and more beautiful.” [This is also my love language.]
🎨(p. 416) “So, forever?” Charlie prompts. “Someone has to put up with you,” Eden grumbles, his hold on Charlie tightening. “You say the sweetest things.” “Fuck off.” “There you go with another one. Such a sweet talker.” [Eden’s love language is “fuck off” and “shut up”, we have that in common.]
⭐️and that's ONLY 15 out of the 77 highlights that I had (well 16 if you count the opening quote I used). This book was amazing and I really enjoyed it. I recommend it to everyone who may feel that they are not special enough to be loved. Please check it out, and give it some love when it comes out on 11/13/2025.
Andrew King, you're next...
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I’ve said it with every new book in this series, and I’ll say it again now, I absolutely ADORE the King brothers.
The third book in the series is Charlie and Eden. Charlie and Eden were messy, chaotic, broken and beautiful all wrapped up in one. I loved them so much. Charlie, for all his chaos, and unwavering love for his brothers especially Andrew. Eden for his vulnerability, and being his unapologetic self.
Break the Rule has a different vibe from the first two books in the series. It’s a much faster burn, and spicier, but still serves the same depth of feelings and love between the characters that draws you in. Charlie and Eden had that instant connection that burned quickly, while feelings came slower, even if Eden fought against it so hard. Charlie was so freaking patient with Eden and instantly accepted him for who he was, and gave him what he needed.
Seeing Eden “fuck you” Montgomery slowly start to believe he could be wanted and loved by Charlie after years of believing he wasn’t worth it, made my heart so very happy. And seeing his friendship with Andrew and how protective he was of him, just made me adore him even more.
Andrew’s story is up next, and I can’t wait to see him get the love he deserves so much.
Lucky writes amazing characters that I am so in love and obsessed with. I absolutely adore this series and Eden feels so perfect for Charlie. It’s the epitome of the black cat/golden retriever trope but it’s done so so so well. I also appreciate someone who says “fuck” as much as I do…
“…he’s pretty sure a well placed ‘fuck you’ might just be Eden’s love language.”
-
“You stupid fucking man. I’m a horrible fucking choice.” “I disagree.” “Of fucking course you do, you stubborn fucking idiot.”
Like, same.
“Take it from someone who knows what it’s like to be loved by Charlie. I don’t think I’m special either. What I think doesn’t seem to matter. Charlie’s always seen the beauty in things others dismissed. It’s what makes him so special.”
I’m obsessed with Andrew and Charlie’s dynamic so much. All of the King brothers are just so sweet and perfect in their own ways and I had an absolute great time from start to finish with this book!!
Thank you so much @authorluckyhart for the advanced copy to review!
I have read and loved both books already out in this series and was over the moon to get the chance to read Charlie and Eden’s story early. They are such a great match. Charlie is so soft underneath his protective armor and Eden is so prickly and distrustful but can you blame him?? No, you cannot.
Charlie was *immediately* gone from his first glimpse at Eden and it was a treat watching this man who didn’t do relationships realize how deep he was in it. Eden’s first instinct was to run and protect himself and Charlie slowly broke down his walls. Eden’s love of his family (Addy and Ella) was so sweet and how Charlie won Ella over had me melting.
Their intimacy was fire, there was some degradation but it was not overwhelming. Eden’s need for control and Charlie’s willingness to let him be in control was so sexy and endearing. Charlie was so down bad he’d do anything and when he begged and crawled toward Eden in the same scene I was a gonerrrrr!! They also figured out their intimacy after sex and it was beautiful to watch their love grow. When Charlie promised to follow Eden 😭😭😭😭.
I’d be remiss to not mention my favorite King brothers always bringing the business. I loved how much we learn about Andrew in this book and how it overlapped with Jason and Emerson’s story! I also *loved* the fight between Alec and Charlie, it felt so incredibly real and my heart broke right along with Alec’s. When Andrew said people would rather hang out with Charlie than him, I cried. When that dickbag came to Thanksgiving, I cried too. But the King brothers always figure it out and their meddling pushed a Charlie and Eden back together. Those King brothers always melting my heart.
I cannot WAIT for the loml and king of my heart Andrew’s book after finishing this one.
This is book 3 in the King of heart series, which centres around the 4 King brothers.
This is Charlie and Eden’s story. Charlie is the 2nd oldest brother and also the younger twin of Andrew. He is artistic, creative, loud , fiercely loyal to his friends and family. And I absolutely love him.
On the flip side there’s Eden. He is the epitome of grumpy. He’s a broken boy who has dealt with some pretty big issues in his short life.
Charlie by his own account is a man whore who does not catch feelings and most certainly doesn’t do relationships. Eden on the other hand doesn’t want anyone to love him and is scared to love for fear of losing everything .
So it’s quite inconvenient when Charlie goes and catches feelings for him. I loved Charlie’s zest for life and absolutely loved how hard and fast he fell for Eden.
Also absolutely loved the close relationship he has with his twin Andrew. They are the ying and yang of the King family. While Eden is the perfect amount of sass, and snarky that I really love in a grumpy MMC.
How they navigate their way through firstly their lust and finally their deepening feelings is a delight to read.
I’m slightly obsessed with neurodivergent characters and I feel that Lucky Hart is one of the best proponents of this trope. The book was fresh, fast never dull with the perfectly proportioned amount of humour and spicy.
I was SO excited to receive this ARC and devoured it in one sitting.
The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was a purely selfish one. I wanted a little more about Andrew at the end. I am frothing for his book and can not wait for it…!!
So once again Lucky Hart has hit a home run again in my eyes.
I absolutely devoured this book! The King men are just my favourites! Charlie and Eden’s story has had me laughing at their bickering, smiling, angry and crying. Poor baby Eden has never been shown the true meaning of loving someone. No one has stuck around except his best friend and her little girl who Eden has helped raise. Letting someone in- especially someone as annoyingly ridiculous as Charlie King- is seriously difficult for Eden. But Charlie King knows- he knows he will follow Eden every time he runs until he doesn’t feel he needs to run anymore. These two have seriously good banter- the same with Andrew and Charlie! This book has had me smiling throughout- I just loved Eden and Charlie’s story!!!! I can’t wait for Andrew’s story though- he is such a complex and interesting character! Overall another fantastic book in the series- 5⭐️s.
*arc review* Absolutely adore Eden and Charlie. 🥹🥹🥹 I love the found family vibes we get across all the books in this series. I also love how Charlie didn't give up when it came to Eden. This book was def more fast paced in spiceeee but we also got those special moments between them. I love any book that has "fxcks you" as a love language 😂😭
**Arc Reader Review ** I am new to reviews but will do my best to to put into words how much I adore this series.
Break the Rules is book 3 out 4 in the Kings of Hart series. I have read the previous two books and fell in love with these four brothers and those they fall in love with.
This book focuses on the 3rd oldest brother Charlie King as he becomes interested in (and falls for) Eden Montgomery. I had already become attached to the chaos that is Charlie after the first two books, so I knew I’d already enjoy witnessing him in his own story. Eden, having been a new addition, had me almost immediately. While I love Theo and Emerson, Eden felt so much like my friends and I was immediately sold.
I will say, definitely read the trigger warnings for this book because Lucky, while not going into graphic details, does cover some heavier topics in this book. This is also has more spice than the previous two as it is definitely a part of the plot, so just be aware of this going before going into this book. Now, in my opinion, it is written well as it drives the story of these two idiots (said affectionately) as both are not the most lovey dovey individuals. I think lLucky does handle some of these heavier topics with a delicacy that helps tell the story without making it feel exploitative. This story is a lot about healing and how sometimes healing hurts. And sometimes family isn’t strictly blood, but those who stand by you at your lowest, and push you forward when you need it (and sometimes give you a well needed smack when you’re being stubborn).
Lucky also, at least for me, writes a decent variety of neurodivergent people. While both Alec (from book 1 of the series) and Charlie both are men with ADHD, they both deal with different aspects of it and both I can relate to in certain areas. We also get a decent peek at Andrew (book 4’s King brother) and his journey with his asexuality. This has me absolutely ready for his book as someone who is also ace but does enjoy a book with spice. The different spectrums of queer individuals that are represented in these books all feel realistic and it’s so refreshing to see so many represented in world of Santa Leon. Having read her previous two books, I can definitely say I see her writing has grown with each book and I am looking forward to the final book in the series as well as whatever projects she decides to write in the future.
Being the third of four books about the King Brothers and their various romances, I knew pretty much what to expect going in. And I got it as Charlie and Eden circled around one another and finally came together.
As the books have progressed, I've seen growth in the writing in various places. There are more female characters to balance the focus on our protagonists. There's more action and character interaction after our couple gets together so the reader doesn't feel like anything was left undone.
This time around I was extra impressed with how a genderfluid or nonbinary character was handled. Eden has a traumatic past with being abandoned at birth and growing up in a foster system that can't deal with his identities. He is currently very unwilling to get involved with others in a sexual or romantic way. But he not only finds acceptance and even desire with Charlie, he discovers he can be an inspiration in more than one way. One of those ways had me tearing up, the scene was so unexpected and heartfelt.
For those familiar with the Kings, we've already seen glimpses of Charlie the chaos agent with that King heart of gold. We get a lot more familiar with Andrew, his twin, and some from-the-other-side bits of their relationships with Alec and Jason, the younger brothers. There are a number of references and advances from the first two books, but there is enough information provided that this one can be read alone. But the main focus is on Charlie as he meets Eden, falls in enough lust to agree to Eden's many rules about hooking up and forgive the mishaps that happen before they finally get there.
I think my only complaint (and it's not a strong one) is that Charlie and Jason feel a lot alike with their overall willingness to accommodate others and honor their boundaries. There's more fire in Charlie when it comes to protecting others and more self-recrimination when he does something and realizes later he was wrong, but there were several times that Charlie would say something and I would think that Jason said/would say the exact same thing. That being said, they are brothers, so it makes sense that they would share some characteristics.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and look forward to the final installment with Andrew, the last of the King brothers.
I received an advanced review copy of Break the Rule by Lucky Hart, and I am so grateful to have been given the chance to read it early. All opinions are my own.
Break the Rules is a deeply emotional and beautifully crafted romance that will grip your heart from the very first page. This story is so much more than a simple love story; it's a deep exploration of trauma, protection, and the healing power of unconditional love.
The book introduces us to Charlie, a free-spirited artist whose vibrant personality shines through in his eccentric fashion (and love for Crocs). His unwavering, beautiful protectiveness over his twin brother, Andrew, is the cornerstone of his life. He’s convinced he can’t have a relationship, fearing it would force him to push Andrew away.
Then there's Eden. Oh, Eden. My heart ached for this character from the moment he stepped onto the page. A grumpy, seemingly closed-off man, Eden carries the heavy scars of a painful past. He has built walls so high to protect himself from abandonment and rejection, deeming himself unworthy of love or even friendship. His journey is one of the most raw and moving I've read in a long time.
The dynamic between sunny, patient Charlie and guarded, hurting Eden is electric. Their chemistry is off the charts, but it's the slow, careful breaking down of Eden's walls that truly makes this story special. Charlie’s persistence isn't pushy; it's a gentle, steady presence that Eden has never experienced before. Seeing Eden's gruff exterior begin to crack is both heartbreaking and uplifting.
A standout element is the incredible theme of found family. From Charlie and Andrew's beautiful twin bond to Eden's chosen family with the wonderful Addy and the absolutely adorable scene-stealer, Ella, the book is filled with relationships that feel real and precious. I was especially touched by the protective, brotherly relationship that develops between Eden and Andrew.
This book made me feel everything. I smiled, I swooned, and yes, I cried at the end. Lucky Hart has created something truly special with these characters.
If you love grumpy/sunshine pairings, stories with immense emotional depth, and the powerful message that everyone deserves to be loved, you need to read this book.
"Life would be so much easier if Eden didn't like pretty things, and boy is Charlie King pretty."
I absolutely ate this book up! Charlie and Eden are the definition of opposites attract and I love it!
Charlie is basically a free spirit who just wants to wear baggy clothes, crocs, and spend his time painting. He loves art, his family, and his pets. Oh, and sex. He hates clothes and being forced to do adult things. Unfortunately for Charlie, his twin brother Andrew, won't let him be an overgrown child all the time. He doesn't want a relationship because him and Andrew might be a little codependent and no one wants to deal with it.
Eden is a loner who doesn't care about anyone except his best friend and the woman that save him, Addy. Growing up in foster care and knowing from a young age that you were different, is extremely hard. Eden never felt loved and so he decided he didn't need it anyways. After a rough past, he swears he doesn't need anyone to be happy.
When these 2 meet, it starts out as an offer for a one night stand, but quickly spirals into something neither of them saw coming. The banter between these 2 is top notch. Eden might be an abrasive a-hole at times, but Charlie's go with the flow attitude is just what he needs to smooth out his rough edges. Charlie is also what Eden needs to heal from his past, so that they can both have the future they deserve.
Tear my heart out and stomp on it then put it back together with friendship bracelets and mole.
I very much appreciated that author Lucky Hart tells readers in the author's note that we won't be getting all of the dark and painful details of Eden's past, because she did not "want to capitalize on the very real trauma queer men experience in a way that does not add to the narrative." We can extrapolate and oh, my poor sweet baby Eden. He has been through it and is still barely hanging on, and then BOOM! Charlie King comes into this life and his heart like the Kool-aid man.
Charlie King is older, and maybe wiser, but also absolutely incapable of taking care of himself (which did get a bit old). He is a goner for don't-call-me-pretty Eden the second he sees him and just wants to get under Eden's skirt (love a man who wears skirts!)
I loved that both MCs have their ride or die, love-me-love-them people. For Charlie it's his twin Andrew and Eden it's his life-saver bestie Addy and her precocious daughter Ella. Combined with allll the King brothers and a smattering of friends, there were a lot of side characters in this story but I enjoyed them all.
While I do maintain that no romance needs to be over ~350 pages and I skimmed a number of the slice of life sections (please do not ever take me on a fictional grocery store shop!), I did enjoy this romance and would read the rest of the series!
Thank you to the author for an eARC, all opinions are my own.
“I want a messy life, baby. That’s where the most beautiful moments happen. I don’t want things to be perfect or easy. I want a messy, colorful life. I want you.”
While this book was completely different than the first two in the Kings of Heart series, it really shines in its own way. Charlie is an absolutely beautiful disaster and it’s hard not to love him and his golden retriever personality. But Eden, oh Eden. 🥺 Eden is the kind of character who really stays with you after you finish a novel; his backstory is absolutely heartbreaking and yet he’s so strong for surviving and pushing past his fears of abandonment and eventually letting Charlie into his heart. Their dynamic was so unique to them and I loved how easy it was for Charlie to fall even though Eden didn’t feel like he was an easy person to love or that he was deserving of Charlie. Everyone deserves to be loved and shown that they’re worthy no matter their past, and Charlie proved time and time again he would always follow Eden’s lead and make sure he knew he was safe with Charlie.
Side note: I absolutely LOVED all of the cameos from the other brothers/characters (Jason and his Emmy & my girl Mabel 🫶🏻) and I cannot wait for Andrew’s book! I just know whoever Andrew ends up with will worship the ground he walks on and deservedly so!!
Three books in this series, all three are 5 star reads. This book definitely has a slightly different tone and definitely darker themes. We know Charlie from the first 2 books and of course Andrew is in this book a lot also. We also meet Eden, Addy, and Ella. We learn more about Charlie and Andrew’s relationship and how it affected Charlie’s dating life. Eden is, special. A broken boy, broken from years of neglect and doing what he had to survive and ultimately closing off his heart. He is angry, lonely, and wary of anything good that comes his way. He is confident in who he is yet at the same time completely insecure of who he is. He is unapologetic of his outward appearance and sexual desires, and insecure and unwilling to accept love from anyone who isn’t Addy and Ella. Eden feels undeserving of love or just unloveable all around because that’s what he was taught in his past. Charlie, with his outgoing, persistent, easy going ADHD personality is the perfect person to love Eden, and Eden does everything he can to prevent that from happening. True to form, this book sees all the King brothers come together to support each other and welcome the lost persons into the Kings circle of love.
When this author mentioned that this book would be different from the first two I had no idea that I wouldn't be able to put this book down and be laughing and sobbing in the same sentences FOR. THE. WHOLE. BOOK."Being shuffled around, taken, rejected and used, left Eden with an acute awareness of how powerless he is in life. The moment he was old enough to reclaim that power, he did, and he made damn sure no one else could get close enough to hurt him ever again." The book is about the right person( Charlie, and his stupid fucking smile)allowing Eden to " understand that you don't have to run away because you are so sure you will be abandoned that you want it to be on your own terms." Or that he can find family that will help with "when you are abandoned by the people that are supposed to love you unconditionally, it breaks something in you that can't be fixed." Lucky Hart weaves a story around Charlie a scattered and talented artist and Eden, a broken and angry and world weary man thinking no one would want to keep him for anything real and makes it something I could not stop reading till the HEA allowed me to finally take the breath I had been holding for the whole book. Please don't let Andrew's book totally break me.
Review: Once again Lucky Hart crushed it. Charlie and Eden are simply perfection. Charlie and Eden's personalities couldn't be any more different from each other, yet their differences make them a perfect match. Charlie is outgoing, loud, chaotic and free spirited while Eden is self reserved, feisty and a loner who doesn't need anyone but his little found family Addy and Ella. That is until Charlie comes along. No matter how hard Eden tries to push Charlie away thinking he's not good enough for him Charlie is determined to show him he is. Eden might be prickly on the outside but inside he just wants to be loved to be cared for and to have a family, and while he had a small family with the girls it grew with Charlie and his family.
I loved seeing more of Andrew and I can not wait for his story!!
With this series, it generally been slow burn and discovering things about the other person. Sweetness really. HOWEEVER EDEN SIAD NAW. Flipped the switch on that and with wild Charlie.
Their characters were just so different but so good together. Eden really hates everyone it seems and has the walls build around him as high and as thick as the pentagon. With what he’s been through, I completely understand by he is the way he is. But Charlie king came into his life and boy was he in for a rollercoaster of emotions he didn’t know he needed. Charlie was happiness, and brightness. He loved and loved to be loved. (I mean not in love cause he says that’s gross)
Dark cat meets a golden retriever artist. They really balanced each other no matter how much they pushed and bickered, they always came back together cause goodness those boys were obsessed with one another.
“You’re my color, Eden Montgomery. You make everything brighter and more beautiful.”
I was lucky enough to be an ARC reader for this book, and man what a book it was! I loved it from beginning to end, though I came to hear more about Emerson from a different perspective I soon feel in love with Charlie and Eden and their complicated dynamic. Charlie is the most loveable, chaotic, golden retriever menace and Eden I just want to wrap in a blanket, give a hot chocolate to, and tell him I love him until he believes it. These two were so perfect for each other and that ending was everything I needed until I wait for the next book. Man those King men really know how to get emotions from you and I’m completely obsessed with the series, if I wasn’t already thanks to Make the Play.
Riley Hart knocked this one out of the park and it’s definitely a must read!
4.25 ⭐️ this might end up a five star. I need to let it sit for a minute. I absolutely love these characters and this family. And Eden was everything. Charlie never tried to push him or change him and I really appreciated that. They were both two amazingly developed characters.
Charlie’s love for his twin, Andrew, was really special. And the fact that Eden found Annie to be a brother to him had me in tears.
They had to fight for this happy ending and it was well worth it.
The only thing I didn’t love was some redundancy issues. Some phrases were repeated too often and I think that could have cut down on the length a bit.
But I truly love, love this world and I cannot wait for the next book. I’m hoping it’s Andrew!!! Also, these really need to be read in order to understand the brother dynamics and relationships. Very important to the story!
“I love you, Eden Montgomery, and I want to love you as long as you’ll let me. However long that might be. I’m privately hoping for forever. Please let it be forever.”
I’m tearing up, i loved this book so much. I loved Eden and charlie has my whole heart. Lucky never misses 💗 Finally getting Charlie’s story makes me so happy and knowing he’s with Eden is so special to me. They are perfect for each other, they understand each other and so emotional because of them 🥹
I received an arc and I can’t be more grateful for this opportunity. I love this series, i love the brothers and i love this little world.

(I received an ARC from the author) So, I'm not really an age gap fan, but I liked the other two books in this series, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this third book! I appreciated how Charlie was respectful of Eden's trauma and stipulations, even without knowing much of the motivation behind them. However, where this book truly shined is in the relationships between the King brothers, especially Charlie and Andrew. Their dynamic was a delight to read, and I can't wait for Andrew's book.
5 for Crying, thats my title and initial review and im sticking to it. The scene in the yard with Eden and the kid with the skirt just did me in. So beautiful and simple yet striking in its statement.
And the crocs, a travesty to the world of feet and yet the ultimate foot prisons.
I have been excited for Charlie’s story since the beginning of the series. What a lovely, chaotic mess of a man. And sweet, broken Eden🤍 I absolutely love reading a broken boy finding love and this book was * chefs kiss * for that. The way Charlie just rolls with Eden’s sass 🤌🏼
While this can definitely be read standalone, I really feel like you’d get a lot more by reading all three in order.
ARC review: I absolute loved Charlie and Eden. Charlie was an absolute simp for Eden and did he absolutely need someone who accepted every part of him. Loved seeing more of Andrew and even getting to see Charlie and Andrew’s relationship some more. Addy and Ella were amazing side characters and I hope we get some more of them in Andrew’s book. My favorite of all 3 brothers.
Once again Lucky has written an amazing book with all the amazing feels! Eden’s backstory made me want to just hug him! And Charlie always had me laughing. The way they come together is a perfectly chaotic masterpiece and one everyone needs to experience
