My Thoughts:
Loving the mix of mystery, prophecy and survival. The characters are interesting especially Phoebe, the way sh was torn between her principles and urgent need to survive. just how fragile our society can be: cities on the edge of chaos, brutal inequality, fear lurking around every corner. In the middle of ir all. The pacing is sharp, the atmosphere is claustrophobic in all the right ways, and the twists land without feeling overdone. A few side characters could’ve used more depth, but overall it’s a powerful mix of suspense, action, and emotion.
If you’re into survival stories that keep you turning the pages late into the night then. I would recommend this book for you.

Through her eyes, we see a society collapsing under the weight of greed, fear, and inequality. Underground bunkers are built for the privileged while the majority struggle with hunger, violence, and despair. Phoebe, torn between her ideals and the harshness of reality, stumbles upon an invitation to a secret shelter that promises safety, forcing her to confront impossible choices about trust, survival, and who deserves a place in the future.

I felt an immediate connection with Phoebe because her frustrations, her quiet resilience, and her moments of doubt felt raw and relatable. The writing is vivid, with unflinching descriptions of a decaying society. I caught myself pausing to breathe, especially during the riot scenes, because they were written in such a way that I could feel the dread in my chest. The mix of tenderness, like Phoebe talking to plants or comforting a student, and the sheer brutality of the crumbling world gave the book a strange rhythm that pulled me in deeper than I expected.

At times, the dialogue leaned toward being a little more polished than everyday speech, almost like the characters were speaking with extra clarity and purpose. But the ideas within those conversations were sharp and thought-provoking. The story often felt like a mirror reflecting our own society, raising questions about fairness, wealth, and the meaning of kindness. Even in the moments that read more like lessons than story, the impact remained strong, and I couldn’t ignore the weight behind the words. The book made me angry, it made me sad, and it even gave me flickers of hope.

I was left thinking less about the plot twists and more about the questions it forced me to wrestle with. Who do we choose to save when resources are limited? What happens when morality collides with survival? As society crumbles, Conservation Scientist Phoebe Jones has become a tutor. Around her, bunkers are rising on the horizon, marking the location of sanctuaries. But the sanctuaries are only for those who have money, or power, or an invitation. The chosen few.

When Phoebe receives an invitation to a mysterious shelter, courtesy of the enigmatic Honeycomb Corporation, she begins to investigate. She’s allowed to bring two people with her; one, of course, will be her long-time friend and neighbor, Miriam. They will be joining others who will help to rebuild humanity.

As Phoebe searches for answers, inequalities, brutality, and chaos surround her. Should she accept the invitation to this mysterious shelter? And what will become of the world?

This dystopian end-of-the-world story pulls the reader into the telling of the tale from the outset. Strong, interesting characters and an intriguing premise work together to keep the pages turning. Unexpected plot twists keep readers guessing as the terrifying tale spins out suspense and uncertainty.

How do you hold on to your principles when you are facing a dying world and simply need to survive? When greed and inequality are the hallmarks of everyday life, how do compassion and kindness survive? Phoebe faces impossible choice between her own principles and the reality of the world around her.

Can kindness and compassion survive in a world filled with violence and anguish? The unfolding story addresses these questions and provides much food for thought with a narrative that promises to remain with the reader long after the final page has been turned.

Hmm. Well, that was...interesting.

When I picked this up I was expecting a sort of race against time to get to a shelter. But our heroine Phoebe is remarkably chill about the world ending. She's offered shelter by a mysterious group who intend to rebuild society. She can bring two people. Now I get she doesn't have family so she can't go down that route. But honestly, it took me about 30 seconds to decide who I would take in that situation - I'd take two kids if you're interested, the first ones I could offer the places to. Then I would be out of there quicker than you could say 'pretty sure this is Trump's fault'. But not Phoebe. No she has a little trip down memory lane, talking to old friends and acquaintances including her wheelchair bound neighbour, her ex, a librarian and her hairdresser. During this time the world's literally falling apart but Phoebe's still chill. She'll leave in a week or so. No rush.
THEN we get a race against time. Except even then it feels more like a brisk walk. There's a bit of peril and then comes the big reveal. And then it all makes sense. I chose this on the basis that it was a thriller. But really it comes under a much more niche genre. It's about reward not redemption.

It's a pretty decent story but even at under 250 pages it feels a bit stretched. But it's well-meaning and ultimately uplifting and hopeful.

As an autistic person who has spent a lifetime watching society make very little sense, this book was weirdly relatable. The world is ending, the rich are building bunkers (shocker), and our heroine Phoebe has to choose two people to save. The existential dread of that choice? Big "choosing which hyperfixation snack to buy" energy, but, you know, with higher stakes. I found the hyper-observant, slightly overwhelmed, morally-stubborn voice of the main character, Phoebe, deeply relatable. The writing style is clear and immersive without being overly flowery; it just pulls you right into this crumbling world that feels terrifyingly close to our own, even if my attention wavered once or twice (but that could be the ADHD). It's hard not to spoil, so I'll cut this short, but if you like character-driven stories about the end of the world that focus on ethics and kindness over violence, you'll probably vibe with this. The story really gets into the meat of who is "valuable" in a crisis, which, as a queer cripple, is a thought experiment I have over coffee.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book. Phoebe Jones is an environmental scientist, working as a private tutor for a rich family living in a "protected" neighborhood. Society is collapsing - food shortages, pandemics, limited electricity and internet, climate collapse, etc. She receives an invitation to a corporation's shelter.

I found this book to be unique, as the description of the world on a tipping point is not often found in dystopian novels, and if it is, not as well-written as Ramos's. I am always a fan of a smart, female protagonist, and Phoebe did not disappoint me. To tell more would spoil some of the twists, surprises, and excitement.
