Nadat ik Fresia Lotus ontmoette op mijn werk tijdens een signeersessie werd ik tijdens een gesprek met haar helemaal klaar gestoomd om haar boek te gaan lezen. :) Ze vroeg mij ook om echt reviews te geven ipv enkel sterren, dus ik hoop dat ik haar hier een plezier mee doe. :)
Ik heb al eerder dark romantasy gelezen en dit boek moet zeker niet onder doen, want.. spicy it is! Rode kaakjes tijdens het lezen. :)
In het begin had ik wat moeite om in het verhaal te komen, maar dat heb ik wel vaker met de boeken in dit genre. Gaandeweg het verhaal kwam ik goed op dreef en begon ik het meer en meer te begrijpen. Het boek leest echt vlot weg en tijdens het lezen werd ik aangenaam verrast dat het verhaal zich vooral afspeelt in Diest, mijn geboortestadje. :)
De personages werden goed omschreven, evenals de omgeving in de 14e eeuw. Ik zag het zo allemaal voor me hoe het in de Middeleeuwen geweest moet zijn. :) De beeldende schrijfstijl was zeker een meerwaarde in het verhaal, net als de korte hoofdstukken. :)
Soms had ik wel moeite met het personage van Cyriel omdat hij zo dominant is. Doet me wat denken aan 50 shades of grey. Maar verder in het boek begrijp je als lezer wel meer en meer hoe het komt en wat er allemaal in hem om gaat, de innerlijke strijdt waar hij constant tegen vecht enz.
Het einde van het boek kwam dan ook veel te snel in zicht en er gebeurde vanalles dat ik niet had zien aankomen. Ik zit met nog heel wat vragen na dit boek, maar het laat me wel in spanning wachten op de volgende 2 delen. :) Ik hoop dat mijn vragen dan beantwoord zullen worden. :)

As a teenager, I read a lot of fantasy, but that was a long time ago. More recently, I discovered dark romance—but I had never experienced those two worlds combined in a single story. At first, I was a little skeptical, but the smooth writing style, the vivid world, and the strong characters pulled me in right away.

Quite early in the story, there’s a first kiss, which made me think things might be moving a bit too fast. But after that, I was actually left longing for more for quite some time. The book is definitely spicy—deliciously so. More than once, I caught myself glancing around to make sure no one could peek at my e-reader.

Then that one moment finally arrived, and the story took exactly the turn I had secretly been hoping for. I sometimes struggled a bit with Cyriel’s dominance, personally, but it fit perfectly with his protective nature and actually made him more believable.

What also pleasantly surprised me was that the story partly takes place in a medieval setting. It’s not a heavy historical novel, but a captivating work of fiction in a historical context, which gives the world extra depth.

And just when I thought I knew where it was headed, everything turned around at the very last moment. It kept me hooked and surprised until the final page, and now I can’t wait for books two and three!

Vandaag mag ik de blogtour aftrappen van dit geweld(ige) verhaal.
Toen Fresia mij vroeg om mee te doen, was ik gelijk enthousiast.
Wat een verhaal, ik moest even bijkomen na deze. Het verhaal moet even op gang komen, wat op zich logisch is omdat we van het heden naar het verleden gaan en er wat situaties “uitgelegd” moeten worden, maar dan komt het verhaal op stoom en is hij niet meer weg te leggen. Je zit midden in de 14 de eeuw en voelt de spanning van de oorlog maar ook die tussen Enna en Cyriel en die knettert behoorlijk, je proeft het bloed dat vloeit, je ruikt de rook en hoort de paarden galopperen. Fresia heeft een fijne schrijfstijl, soms lijkt hij een beetje poëtische. Ze neemt je echt mee in de wereld van Enna en Cyriel. De wereld in het verleden is keihard, er woedt tenslotte een oorlog. Het is voor Enna echt schakelen naar hoe men in die tijd leefde, maar ze is echt een krachtige vrouw en er ontstaan ook mooie nieuwe vriendschappen. Ik heb echt genoten van dit verhaal. Een dikke aanrader.
Ik heb de Nederlandse versie van dit verhaal gelezen, hij is er ook in het Engels. Dit is mijn eerste leeservaring van Fresia, maar ik ga er zeker meer lezen.
Waar gaat het verhaal over:
Zij wilde nooit aan hem Gebonden zijn. Hij had nooit de bedoeling om te vallen. Maar het lot vraagt geen toestemming en liefde maalt niet om wie ze verwoest.
Enna heeft een heerlijk en fijn leven, is getrouwd met een goede man. Dan waagt ze zich samen met een vriendin om “les” te nemen in boogschieten te paard. De man Cyriel, die deze lezen geeft is heel aantrekkelijk ( ook een stuk ouder) en er is een ongekende aantrekkingskracht tussen beide. Dan volgt er één roekeloze kus en deze kus scheurt de wereld open en slingert Enna naar het door oorlog verscheurde Vlaanderen in de 14de eeuw, vervormd door de Gebondenen.
Cyriel is gerekend door de oorlog. Hij is dodelijk. Onverbiddelijk. Hij had Enna nodig om terug te keren naar tijd, niets meer en zeker geen liefde, dat maakt hem zwak, maar de band die ze hebben is sterk. Terwijl Enna haar best doet om te overleven in een oorlog die nooit de hare had moeten zijn, ziet ze flitsen van Enna in de huidige wereld, die alles krijgt waar zij ooit naar verlangde.
Zal ze het lot trotseren dat ze nooit vroeg—of zich overgeven aan een liefde die koninkrijken op de knieën

I connected with the author of this book on TikTok where she asked me if I was interested to read her book as an ARC. Of course I accepted the offer and here I am writing my review after reading this story.

This book is written from the point of view of our main characters: Enna and Cyriel. I personally enjoyed the Cyriel chapters more. Maybe it was because we got a better view on his inner turmoil and dialogue.

This book has rather short chapters, but that's not something I mind. To be honest I like a book where I can just go 'one more chapter' and it not being an hour long read. In the beginning it did feel like something was missing, but this solved itself when I just read on to be honest.

I was a little bit put off in the beginning, because it seemed like the book was going to be an insta attraction one, but it redeemed itself. The relationship between our main characters definitely took a little while to develop after the first physical attraction.

This story did keep me guessing about what was going on with the characters. Like at the start I wondered what was up with Cyriel. I kept wanting to know where Enna's resolve would go to, who was the mole in the Hold and so on.

I pondered why the people in the Hold were speaking something so close to Dutch, until I noticed that we're actually in a setting that plays out in Flanders. We read about places like Diest, Ghent, Tienen and Leuven. So it was really interesting to read a story in a setting where I have actually been.

I did, however, miss consent a bit in the spicy scenes. Especially the earlier ones. Later on it comes out a bit better, although it is more the MMC being possessive, than him actually caring about consent I think.

In the end I was sometimes frustrated with the characters, loved to see certain characters bonding, but also felt pain in my heart when certain characters died. I see a lot of potential in this book one, and I'm very curious to explore this world more in the upcoming books two and three.

I of course can't write a review for an ARC without thanking people: so Fresia Lotus, thank you for trusting me with your book. I would definitely love to ARC read again for you in the future if you'll allow it. As always I give this review freely and my opinions are always my own. I wish the author all the luck with the release of this book!

Waar het hart hoort te zijn

Enna leidt een rustig leven, ze houdt van haar werk en is getrouwd met een lieve man. Maar ondanks dat ze gelukkig is, is er ook een leegte. En dan ontmoet ze hem en delen ze een kus die alles verandert.

Cyriel is getekend door het leven en door oorlog. Hij heeft Enna nodig om in zijn tijd voor verandering te zorgen. Het gaat hem enkel om die ene kus, dat is alles. Hij kan niet voor haar vallen ook al zijn ze gebondenen. Zij kan niet zijn zwakte worden.

Maar waar het lot beslist en een profetie vervuld moet worden, is je verzetten tegen liefde vrijwel onmogelijk.

Bound by fate van Fresia Lotus is een intense dark romantasy waarin tijd vloeibaar wordt.

Fresia Lotus giet een liefdesverhaal in een flexibele vorm en neemt je daar helemaal in mee. Ze laat je juichen voor personages waar je normaal gesproken misschien aan zou twijfelen en ze laat je hopen op relaties die niet direct vanzelfsprekend zijn, maar waarvan je voelt dat ze kloppen. Haar verhaal schuurt en beweegt buiten de standaarden, precies zoals je bij dark romantasy kan verwachten en alleen accepteert omdat je weet dat het fictief is.

Het verhaal gaat vlot van start en de auteur heeft een fijne schrijfstijl. De aantrekkingskracht tussen de hoofdpersonen is voelbaar en ondanks hun age gap heb je niet het gevoel dat de personages daarin ver uit elkaar liggen. Ze zijn gelijkwaardig, zelfs in de tijd dat dat sowieso niet vanzelfsprekend was. Het is leuk dat de tijden waarin het verhaal zich afspeelt, al dan niet uit eigen ervaring, herkenbaar zijn weergegeven. Je weet direct waar je bent zonder dat dat vermeld hoeft te worden. Hetzelfde geldt voor de karakters die het verhaal vertellen, ze hebben ieder hun eigen stijl en dragen op hun eigen manier bij aan de sfeer en beleving.

Bound by fate is een verhaal over strijd, liefde en over de bestemming van het hart.

This was my second arc reading ever and I loved this book! Adored every single bit!
This book is a story between Cyriel and Enna. They are drawn to each other from the very first chapter. It feels like magic but that's crazy right 😉? When I started reading the first few chapters I thought ooooh this is a cowboy romance...nice....COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE WRONG...
I don't want to spoil it too much but Enna lives in this century and is a married woman. Cyriel lives in this century but wants to go back and he needs her to do that. He knows she's his soulmate (I got some acotar vibes here, I heard the line there you are in my head). Eventually they both get back in the 14th century (hello outlander vibes). And she learns he's anything but a cowboy. He went back with a purpose, he defends the weak (robin hood anyone?) and wants justice to be done. mix all of that with a ton of spice, and you get one of the best books ever. There was a scene in this book, so spicy I think even my ears went red 🙈. There is also an age gap between Enna and Cyriel. She's 29 and he's around 15 years older than her. But then again I'm a real sucker for age gap romances. Beware this book is the very first of a trilogy and book 2 will be available somewhere in spring '26. So you know it ends in a major cliffhanger 😭 and the author doesn't want to tell me what's going to happen next 😆.
This book has over 500 pages and I read it in 2 days, it's that good, plus sleep is overrated anyway. It's like nothing I ever read before,a very unique, spicy, dark romance. You will go through so many emotions in this book and all I wish for is to be able to read it for the first time again. Please pick it up, you won't regret it ❤️

Bound by Fate has a lot of potential and some truly enjoyable elements. The short chapters make it easy to keep saying “just one more,” and I really liked the dual POV, which gave me insight into both main characters and their motivations. Fresia’s writing style is smooth, and the worldbuilding stands out, especially the unique choice of setting the story in Flanders — with mentions of Ghent, Diest, Leuven, and Tienen, and the use of Dutch woven into the dialogue. That touch gave the story a special, grounded feel.

That said, the beginning felt a bit slow and vague, and it took me a while to really get into the story. The connection between the main characters wasn’t immediate for me — at first, it seemed like an “insta attraction” story, but thankfully, the romance developed more naturally later on. Still, I would’ve liked a bit more attention to consent in the early spicy scenes, as the dynamic sometimes leaned more possessive than romantic.

The fantasy elements and concept of portal travel to another realm (rather than traditional time travel) are intriguing, but the plot can get a little muddled at times, with too much focus on internal drama over the darker fantasy promise.

Overall, Bound by Fate is a solid debut with strong worldbuilding and emotional moments, even if it takes some patience to fully connect with the characters and story. It left me curious to see how the world and its heroes will evolve in the next books.

Vandaag mag ik een recensie posten voor de blogtour van ‘Bound by fate’.🤗
Ik heb er voor gekozen om hem in het Nederlands te lezen (het boek is uitgegeven in het Nederlands en Engels;).

Wauw wat een geweldig boek was dit!
Als je van Outlander en/of ACOTAR leuk vindt is dit het perfecte boek voor jou!

Dit is het tweede boek wat ik van Fresia lees en tot zover ben ik erg fan van haar schrijfstijl.
Vooral in dit boek merkte ik dat er veel gevoel zat in de schrijfstijl en er een soort poëtische sierlijkheid in de woorden zit.

Het begin was een beetje inkomen in het verhaal doordat je van het heden naar het verleden toe gaat. Hierdoor snap je een beetje hoe de situaties in elkaar zitten en hoe de hoofdpersonages zijn.

Er zit soms zoveel spanning tussen de hoofdpersonen, wat ik persoonlijk echt heerlijk vind;) De aantrekkingskracht tussen Enna en Cyriel is zo voelbaar, brandend en sprankelend als vuurkooltjes.
Wat ik heel leuk vind is dat ze beide gelijk staan aan elkaar ook al speelt het zich af in de 14de eeuw.

De spanning van de oorlog die zich in die tijd afspeelt is erg toepasselijk en maakt het verhaal erg bondig.
De dubbele POV vond ik erg fijn, hierdoor kruip je steeds in iemands anders hoofd en merk je hoe de persoonlijkheid is van diegene.

Een super krachtig en goed dark fantasy verhaal! Zeker een aanrader ook voor mensen die zitten te twijfelen om dark fantasy boeken te lezen!

I picked up this book because it promised time travel and I love historical novels and fantasy.  Well it turned out that it's not exactly time travel but more portal travel to another dimension which has about a 14th century earth civilization level.


The beginning is slow and a little vague about the main characters, something about a thing missing in Enna's life, hints come together and you draw a conclusion. This continues in the book later also when it turns out that in the realm they speak old Dutch and some new dutch. Cyrill speaks both but uses  new dutch so Enna can understand. Ehm I probably  totally missed the hints  there where it was made clear they were dutch speaking ( vlamisch or dutch) ???


The characters are likeable but are, in the beginning, a little one dimensional ( they develop during the story though) I also find they ponder and moon a little  too much to my liking.  


All this unfortunately distracts from the story.

You have to wade a little to get to it but it is certainly worth your trouble.

Bound by Fate turned out to be a beautiful story.
It's a dark romance, a genre that's definitely my thing. From the very first page, you're immediately drawn into the story. What I particularly enjoyed is the time travel: the story takes you back to the 14th century.

I found it especially special that Ghent, my hometown, also plays a role in this that added even more charm to the book.

Fresia Lotus's writing style is very smooth and descriptive. The emotions, the suspense, and the romance are perfectly balanced.
You feel the attraction between the characters, but there are also plenty of dark twists that make you curious about what's to come. I'm incredibly happy that I had the opportunity to read this story and want to thank Fresia for her trust. It definitely leaves you wanting more; I'm already looking forward to her next work!

This is unlike any romantasy I've read before and I liked it! But girl I need book too!! Enna is a human from present time and she's married and struggling mentally and emotionally. She goes with her best friend to ride horses and meets Cyriel and they have an instant connection something happens and they get taken back in time 60ish years maybe more and she learns now that their bonded but she can also feel herself still in the real world with her husband she split in two! She now understands why things didn't work out and why she is where she is now! The bond between Enna and Cyriel grows stronger and after some time they quit fighting feeling and come together! I wouldn't say it's dark but just little I own you vibes! It's a good Romantasy if you want to dable in it! But I really enjoyed it and can't wait for book 2!! Thank you for allowing me to be an ARC reader even though I got to it late!!

When Fresia reached out to me if I wanted to read Bound by Fate a dark fantasy novel, after reading the blurb I was very excited to dive into this book. It took me a while to finish the book because I myself was all over the place, but after I sat down for it I finished it very quickly. 

I needed a while to get into the story. I really had a love and hate relationship with the characters and I while the blurb sounded amazing, the story itself took quite a bit of time to let me know where it was going. I loved that the chapters were on the short side, so it was easy for me to just finish one more chapter every time. What I also loved was the dual-POV I really love getting in more then one head while reading and getting more of the motivations people do stuff they do! 

Fresia has a nice writingstyle, the worldbuilding was done great. Letting it take place in places like Ghent, Tienen, Leuven and Diest. The dutch language coming through was a nice extra! 

Bound by fate is a book with a lot of potential for sure. And I had a couple of moments where I laughed but overall it took me too long to really get into the story and I didn't felt an enormous connection with the characters. Being it a dark fantasy I had hoped more of the fantasy and the darkess, then the drama that was put on page between the characters.

I read her first book, so I knew roughly what to expect, but I was very impressed by her second book. Fresia Lotus writes with such ease that you would think she had already written 20 books. Highly recommended within the Dark Romantasy genre.

In het begin begon het boek wat vreemd, maar na een tijdje heeft het boek me helemaal verslind. Van veel spice tot verbazing wat een plottwist op het einde! Ik raad dit boek heel erg aan! Knap van deze Tiense auteur.
