I’m incredibly grateful to have been given the opportunity to read this book as an ARC reader.
This book is, without a doubt, a five-star read for me. From the first page to the last, I was completely immersed in the world, lore, characters, and love that filled every chapter.
McCormack is a truly gifted author. She not only breathes vivid life into her fractured, magical world but also gives her characters depth, purpose, and unforgettable personalities.
I’m always drawn to an enemies-to-lovers and marriage-of-convenience fantasy romance, but Carved in Crimson is so much more than that. McCormack revitalizes these tropes by exploring the real challenge of gaining and giving trust—especially trusting yourself when it contradicts the faith you once had in others.
This story is rich in detail, visceral in emotion, and consuming in its passion, conviction, and persistence.
Seren is aware of her limitations, but her confidence and self-trust are shaken when she faces a dire choice: save a stranger by any means necessary or condemn him to death simply for being in the wrong place. Though she feels rattled and haunted by her decision and its consequences, this moment marks the first time she acts on instinct—defying the beliefs she was raised with among the Viori. Deep down, she knows she has never truly belonged to them. This realization sets her on a dark, passionate, and devastating path—one she was always meant to walk.
When Rykr is saved by a “savage” Viori woman and subjected to her people’s harsh laws, he’s challenged in ways he never expected. This fierce woman stands against her entire community for him, despite knowing nothing about him. She risks everything for a man burdened by regret, shame, and secrets. Her compassion pushes Rykr to see beyond Seren’s origins, to embrace her flaws, and to confront his own—meeting his past and pain head-on.
Though their connection begins with a magical bond, it quickly becomes something far deeper. Despite the constant threats and uncertain future, Seren and Rykr find themselves drawn to each other by choice, by admiration, and by a desire that burns brighter than the danger surrounding them. Together, they risk it all—their lives, love, family, honor, individuality, and even the realm itself.
When I say I loved these two characters, I mean it wholeheartedly. Every thought, confession, vow, and whispered word hit—and even more so in the explosive final act. Seren and Rykr have everything they know or believe upended, set ablaze, doused, and buried beneath political conspiracies, betrayals by loved ones, prophetic revelations, and brutal trials designed to destroy them both.
This novel—the start of what will surely become a powerhouse series standing alongside ACOTAR, FBAA, ToG, Spark of the Everflame, and Quicksilver—ends with perfection. I’m left content yet cautious, relieved yet apprehensive, warm and fuzzy yet utterly shocked and suspicious. In short, I’m in my feels and loving every second of it.
Out November 4th, this book deserves all the praise, conversation, theorizing, and obsessing the book community can offer.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A huge round of applause, an audible squeal of delight, and a dash of swoon-worthy spice = an absolute success for Annabelle McCormack.
