Are you a dog lover? Vertical and breathing? Do you enjoy sturdy writing and heartfelt, heartwarming stories saturated in hope and resilience? Then The Dozer Project: A German Shepherd’s Rescue Story is for you.
Stephanie Rivera, a talented young sketch artist, is quiet, shy, and reserved. She’s pondering what to do in order to fulfill her school community service requirement. Loud and athletic, Thomas Yaker is charming, outgoing, and popular. He’s also the middle school's “Golden Boy.” And to Thomas, community service is “just another line on a college app.” How two people with completely different personalities meet and how their worlds collide and change with one German Shepherd takes up the balance of this uber engaging and thoroughly captivating story.
Neither Stephanie nor Thomas is exactly turning cartwheels over being paired up to train shelter dogs at the Green Valley Animal Shelter. Their “project” is teaching basic commands to Dozer, a massive German Shepherd. Dozer’s been tagged “unadoptable” and “a furry wrecking ball.” Abandoned in an industrial park, Dozer is a dog who’s been "betrayed "by the world and who had chosen to fight back… This wasn’t just community service anymore. This was survival.”
Dozer lives up to his billing. In spades. The initial result is a lot of frustration and exasperation.
Over time, however, Stephanie and Thonmas learn how to use their individual skills, abilities and personalities to establish a connection with Dozer and each other. In the process, the two reluctant volunteers learn that relationships -both canine and human – aren’t about control, but clarity and understanding. For example, close observation of Dozer – the kind an artist knows – reveals that the dog isn’t a bad dog. He’s just afraid. And overwhelmed.
Kind of like Stephanie and Thomas. On different levels.
Slowly by surely, the quiet artist and the popular athlete are no longer two people stuck on the same project. They’re a team. As they continue working with Dozer, they learn that Dozer picks up on any tension between them and responds accordingly. As understanding and respect bloom, a quiet camaraderie settles around Stephanie and Thomas. It’s anchored in a “growing love they both felt for the big, anxious dog who was finally letting them see his heart.” The kids slowly begin to realize that it’s not about obedience with Dozer. It’s about healing. And as Stephanie sketches Dozer, her pencil becomes “a way to speak up for someone who couldn't speak for himself.”
As the kids continue learning and working with Dozer, they begin to learn more about each other. Barriers fall as a bridge of understanding is slowly built and a friendship is formed based on mutual trust. "This wasn't about us training Dozer,” observes Stephanie. “He was training us."
Eventually, Stephanie and Thomas don’t just see a loud dog. They see a thinking, feeling animal. A story. A relationship. A team. “Dozer had done more than learn how to stay or come when called. He had brought together two people who might never have seen each other clearly without him. Stephanie found her voice. Thomas found his softness. Together, they learned that real strength wasn't about control. It was about understanding.”
But how will Dozer do at the Community Service Fair? After all, “This wasn't just about a final grade. It was about the summer that had changed all three of them.” Finally, will Dozer get a forever home? And if he does, will Stephanie and Thomas be able to say goodbye?
Bring tissue.
First off, I absolutely loved the artwork in this book. Dozer practically leaps off the page and into your lap. Or your heart. Expert writing, nimble pacing, and masterful storytelling propel this outstanding story about kindness and understanding. Patience. Hope. Teamwork. And lessons learned “from a dog who barked too loud, loved too hard, and changed their lives forever.”
Tip: Don’t miss Chapter Fifteen. It’s a primer on German Shepherds and includes excellent information about the breed, its history, appearance, temperament and personality, and training and activities. A lot of good information here!
Finally, I can’t quite put into words how much I loved this book. I didn’t want it to end! The target audience for The Dozer Project is middle grade readers. But this book will resonate with anyone who’s ever dreamed of second chances, belonging, and a place to call home. It’s a winner. BIG TIME.
The cover features a German Shepherd, so it was a no-brainer for me to pick up this book! I often choose my reads based on their covers, and as a huge fan of German Shepherds, I couldn’t resist—though as a military family that rents, I’ve had to settle for my wonderful Border Collie mixes.
This rescue story centers around a misunderstood German Shepherd named Dozer and two teenagers, Stephanie and Thomas, who are assigned to rehabilitate him. Initially viewing the task as a burden, they learn about patience and empathy while training Dozer. As they confront their own challenges, they form a deep bond, leading to personal growth and unexpected friendship. The story illustrates the transformative power of connection.
This book will truly tug at your heartstrings as you get to know Stephanie, Thomas, and Dozer. Despite being a short read, it manages to deliver enough character development to keep you completely engaged until the very last page. I was a bit apprehensive about the possibility of a sad story since I recently lost my beloved pup, but thankfully, this tale has a happy ending and is overall a sweet read.
I love how the characters, despite their differences, come together to help Dozer find his family. Dog behavior can be quite intricate, yet they grasp the concepts of reward and motivation. As Stephanie begins to identify Dozer’s triggers, everything starts to click into place.
If you enjoy uplifting stories about pups that are a challenge to adopt, or about how two young people—so different from one another—can work as a team, then this book is perfect for you or a young reader. This book explores themes of how not every breed is a fit for every person, the importance of learning to be patient and kind, and communicating better. Overall, this was a delightful read, and I hope you get a copy for yourself or for young readers because no one should miss out on Dozer's heartwarming story.
Thank you, Booksprout, for the digital ARC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
What happens when a shy girl and an extroverted soccer team leader work together toward a common goal? Dozer!
I'm a big fan of dog movies and stories, so this was a big hit for me. I wish we had a school assignment like this when I was a kid, training a shelter dog, just like Stephanie and Thomas did. But this book is much more than that. It’s not just about training a dog; it’s about how both characters grow in the process, face their insecurities and vulnerabilities, and discover who they truly are inside.
Without spoiling anything, I especially loved the part where they realize that communication with a dog isn’t about control, but about mutual trust and shared interests, and how the two of them become three.
I don’t know if this is based on a true story, but I really hope it is. This book made me fall in love with its characters.
This book surprised me with how much depth it packed into what could have been just another dog story - watching Stephanie and Thomas learn to work together while helping Dozer overcome his fears was genuinely moving. The way their own personal growth mirrored the dog's journey from scared shelter animal to trusting companion felt so authentic and well-developed. As someone who volunteers with rescue animals, the portrayal of patience and trust-building really resonated with me, and I found myself rooting for all three characters throughout their ups and downs. This is the kind of story that stays with you long after you finish reading, reminding you that sometimes the most meaningful connections happen when you least expect them.RetryClaude can make mistakes. This was a lovely read about two teenagers who seemed to have nothing in common, yet formed a meaningful friendship while working together on a community service project, training a German Shepherd named Dozer at a rescue centre.
My daughter, who is hoping to adopt a rescue dog after the summer, really connected with the story. Her heart went out to Dozer and she could truly feel his excitement, enthusiasm, and moments of fear.
The fun facts and general knowledge about German Shepherds at the end were a great addition.
I would have given it five stars, but there were a few inconsistencies in the characters’ ages and surnames between the main story and the epilogue. That said, it’s still a good, easy read that we’d definitely recommend.
The Dozer Project is an inspiring and tender story that shows how love, trust, and dedication can transform lives. Following Stephanie, Thomas, and Dozer, the book highlights the power of connection between humans and animals while exploring themes of courage, vulnerability, and friendship. The writing pulls you into their world, where every training session becomes a lesson in patience and understanding. It’s more than just a rescue story, it’s about finding strength in unexpected places and learning that growth often comes from challenges. This is a heartfelt, uplifting read that leaves you with hope and admiration for second chances.
The Dozer Project is one of those heartwarming yet realistic stories that should be required reading for all those doubting that there is still positivity and kindness in this world. As many would know rescue dogs can bring so much to those who adopt or care for them, often themselves becoming the rescuer in the process. The age old themes of patience, second chances and working together bring this story to life with warmth and a feel good vibe. While especially relevant for dog lovers, it would still appeal to anyone who is open to changing attitudes and learning life lessons from unexpected sources.
Dozer’s journey is more than a rescue tale—it’s a testament to the healing power of love and the quiet heroism found in everyday acts of kindness. This story is what we need in life to transform the lives of those in hardship through love, patience, and a sense of purpose. The book chronicles Dozer's journey from trauma to healing. If you’re drawn to stories that celebrate resilience and the transformative bond between humans and animals. You will like the book. I love Dozer transformation.
The Dozer Project: A German Shepherd's Rescue Story by Laura Shouse This is a heartwarming story about two middle schooler who learn life lessons while training a German Shepherd who was not suitable for adoption. This was a great story for ages ten and up including adults too. This is the first book I have read from the author and look forward to reading more of her work.

Dozer’s story begins with fear and uncertainty. He’s a German Shepherd who’s been through a lot, and learning to trust again isn’t easy. Two teens take on the challenge of helping him, and together they build something special. As Dozer slowly opens up, the teens grow too finding confidence, patience, and purpose. This is a gentle, uplifting story about second chances, friendship, and the quiet power of kindness.
This story goes beyond the surface of a rescue dog narrative. It follows two teenagers who are paired to train a dog with a lot to overcome, and through that experience, something genuine unfolds. Their growth feels natural, and the writing stays grounded while still delivering real heart. It is a well-paced, character-driven story with sincerity and depth.
This book touched my heart in so many ways. Dozer’s story is a beautiful reminder of the power of second chances and the incredible bond between humans and dogs. Laura’s honesty and love for rescue animals shines through every page. I finished it in one sitting, I couldn’t put it down!
This is one of those feel-good stories about two completely different teenagers who build a friendship and learn lifelong values while training a troublesome German Shepherd. It’s a short, pleasant read that leaves a warm impression.
