Offers advice on planning a hiking or backpacking trip on the John Muir Trail, discussing supplies, permits, animal problems, and packing, with trail profiles and maps
Aside from a compass, this is about the only thing you need to hike the JMT. Brought a copy along for the ride back in 2004, and was overly pleased with the results. Never got lost; never had any other reference source; and never felt let down by the book.
Provides both a South-to-North and North-to-South description of the trail along with a more than adequate description of mileage, points of interest, and spots to camp for the night. The back also provides plenty of information on where and how to resupply during the trek.
I've seen a complaint or two saying this doesn't provide enough information or "useless if you plan on doing the trail", but I'm wondering what more these people want. Maps? Check. Mileage and trail description? Check. Additional permit, resupply, and planning info? Check for all three. Lightweight and concise? Yep.
In the end, this book isn't going to make up for inexperience on the trail. What it is, is a succinct and valuable companion for an experienced hiker looking to do the JMT. If that's you, buy with confidence.
A life goal I have is to hike the entire 218 miles of the John Muir Trail, most likely in segments. This book helps to plan this type of trip, however it seems to be more focused on those planning on through hikes.
This book mostly provides a scenic description of the trail -- great if you want to experience the trail precariously, but useless if you're actually planning on doing the trail.
