Who is Hector?

description

Hector Hammond is back in this issue after being introduced at the end of #4, and he looks to be quite the smarmy villain. We also see a fairly spectacular showdown between Jo & Hal as their Green Lantern and Black Hand personas fight it out.

description

Some of what's going on is still a bit confusing, but I'm willing to let Al Ewing do his thing and trust that he knows where all of this is going.
Plus, HOLY SHIT that ending.

A tense, horror-tinged chapter that pits Jo Mullein against a corrupted Hal Jordan in a high-stakes cosmic clash. Al Ewing keeps the mystery sharp and the tension escalating, while Jahnoy Lindsay’s dynamic, electrified visuals make every page pop. A standout issue that blends psychological pressure with blockbuster Lantern action.

I am loving the blend of cosmic horror, action, and character building that is happening here. This is becoming one of my favorite reads.

We are getting a bit more sauce on the characters and a little more clarity on what’s happened and a little bit here and there as to why. I gotta say, i feel like the first few issues felt a lot stronger then the last two issues. I am seeing the metaphor for fear and trauma sure but it was a lot stronger earlier in my opinion and had more richness to it.

Jahnoy Lindsay is showing off. His Black Hand design is truly frightening, and the showdown with Jo is a ton of fun. The story is a bit light this issue, but the fight sequence is worth taking up as many pages as it does.

CHANGE OF SCRIPT EVERYONE! Be WITH fear now, spread the word! Be WITH fear! Abin Sur is dead and judgment is not in progress, so make sure you are with fear. Hear that Todd Rice! I don’t care if Hector Hammond and his crew are clawing you from the wreckage after Jo got the green lantern power, became an anomaly, and sent the giant green lantern crashing down on the town…you better be WITH FEAR and shut your mouth, lol. That of course doesn’t happen, and with the threat of not getting medical care…Todd spills everything he was able to hear and figure out to Hector Hammond…ugh. Once everything with Jo happened and the sky fell, Hal was pretty understandably pissed and confused and as Abin sat in the ground with dwindling power, he gave a cryptic warning that as an anomaly Jo will now be hunted and that they should be with fear. Hal, not understanding any of this, decided to take out all the death he believed Abin caused…on Abin himself, unloading the gun filled with gold painted bullets and killed Abin there. Which is just so perfect, of course Hal kills Abin there absolute universe. So instead of granting Hal the power of the ring, Abin bestows judgement on Hal through the black hand. I am not sure why Abin would do this, especially after telling Hal to fear the black hand and the black star, total party foul dude, but we won’t be getting any answers out of Abin as he also turning into a puddle of black goop. What really worries me is that Hector now has all that black goop…and Todd. Hey Todd, becoming Obsidian in this universe may not be so easy as being born with the powers…sorry.

But hey, at least we know why Hal has the black hand. the problem now is dealing with it and the corrupting powers that are turning Hal into a giant anime monster, and worrying about Hector looking for Jo. As we cut back over to the fight between Jo and Hal, she is absolutely laying it on him. The green light does a great job of dispersing the black hand forming itself around Hal, but its powerful properties continue to corrupt itself back onto Hal, turning him completely against Jo, taunting her to take off the ring. This immediately sends Jo into a flashback after separating from her wife, someone who also told her to take off the ring. It’s a tab bit corny, but I really like how the ex wife argues that the ring was a symbol of commitment and somehow they worked some of the green lantern path into their wedding vows as Jo apparently promised to be there “in brightest day and blackest night.” But even then Jo refused to give up the ring, and while I’m not entirely sure what happened way back when, Jo obviously has some pent up anger she is able to unleash on Hal. That doesn’t last long mind you, and suddenly Jo finds herself running as Hal’s black hand goes majorly vertical and starts chasing her. But all this power has caught the attention of the scientists with Hector, who have so far had 0 luck getting into the giant green lantern. But who needs tech anymore when the keys to the lantern are fighting just over the horizon and heading right towards them. I have to admit this was a smart move, as Hector orders all of his teams away so they can lure Jo towards the lantern to see what happens. And they were not disappointed as the lantern rose up in glowing excellence and calling to Jo! With the black hand chasing and reaching out to her, creeping up her body attempting to take her over, she pushes back (seemingly filled with power from the lantern) and drags the black hand towards it! Suddenly it is though they have gone inside the green lantern, as finally we see the ring in the dark that has been calling to us from the start of every issue. But there is a surprise at the end of this issue as it almost seems like a new Abin Sur has been deployed. But this time the emissary telling them to be without fear, is glowing golden, and is John Stewart!! WHAT?! YES!! HAHAHAHA! MORE!

OK. I have a LOT of questions on the whole thing.
What exactly is the Black Hand. And wtf happen to Abin Sur?
Loved the oath being her wedding votes.
But 5 issues so far and 0 answers.
And now John. WTF?

This series is quite creative, intense and exciting. Turned the green lantern storyline into an Aliens like theme.
