I don't know why I love this series as much as I do (especially with how dramatic it is LOL), but here we are with me really really loving this volume!
The "stakes" are SOOOO much higher and honestly felt bad for Hatori in this volume! Just when she has FINALLY moved on from Rita and is genuinely happy with Hiromitsu, Rita is over there throwing a curveball at her! LOL!
I will say that how she handled that situation was really admirable! I don't think I have EVER admired Hatori's actions at any point, so I'm very impressed that I can even say that, but comparing her reactions and his is like night and day. I've found her relatable in some ways, sure, but I feel she has had some VERY unhealthy decision-making in the past, and because of that, I fully expected her to make another unhealthy one in this volume.
However, it was RITA who made the awful decision! Not only that, but Nakajima has been the voice of reason this entire series, but I don't like what she is telling Rita now. Is she wrong? Well, not necessarily, BUT! Shouldn't she be on Hatori's side in this? Shouldn't she, Nakajima, be avoiding starting any more drama than there already is? If I was disappointed in anyone, it's definitely these two!
The person who impressed me the most though is definitely Hiromitsu! WOW! His actions showed A LOT about his character in how even when Hatori was going to "gift" herself to him, he did NOT push or pressure her when it was extremely obvious that she was very uncomfortable and didn't want to do anything intimate. He's had a playboy aura this whole time, but it's like it broke in this volume right from the very first pages, and continually felt my jaw drop from shock! LOL! Not only that, but the bonus story showed a lot about his character as well and now I'm cheering for him when up to volume three I had been Team Rita! LOL! (Volume four I was undecided LOL)
Definitely another great volume that isn't nearly as toxic as previous volumes, but definitely no less dramatic! LOL!
Now that Hatori is dating Hiromitsu, her hankering for Rita has abated (probably just for now). What's going on with Rita, though? Now that Hatori's out of reach, he's in tears saying that he's in love with her. Adachi is near-forgotten in the turmoil.
Let's get this out of the way--I don't think a single one of these characters is likeable. Hatori's and Rita's emotions, at least, are unmoored, vacillating, lacking a core or center. They're selfish, but don't have a good idea what (or who) they really want.
Possible interpretations of what's going on with Hatori and Rita: - they're attached more to the concept of loving the other more than actually loving them - their long-time friendship is causing issues now that they're well into the hormonal storm of adolescence - they're actually well-suited for each other, but high school's a little too early to commit to that.
The prequel short story with Hiromitsu and Satomi made me appreciate him more than before. I think he's being ethical, in his own way, about his sex life. He knows that Satomi is actually in love with him, and as much as she claims a "friends with benefits" arrangement would be fine with her, he knows that wouldn't make either of them happy. So, at least until Hatori shows up, he'll continue his playboy ways.
As love triangles goes (sorry, Adachi, you aren't a contender in this arena), this is pretty entertaining. At least two of the corners are complete boneheads, for one thing. For once, I don't have a strong inclination for one or the other guy, though I do kind of feel like Hatori would have to get to know Hiromitsu for a while longer before being able to get any sort of HFN with him. Why is it that these trash fire stories always feel like they're heading toward HFNs rather than HEAs? Oh well, they're fun.
One minor quibble I have with this manga as it's going along is that there's one "girl" character design, and one "boy" character design, with different hairstyles. I noticed it almost right away with Koda's other series My Special One, and about five volumes in with this one. The characters' behavior is very different, though, so it isn't hard to follow.
I read the Yen Press edition of this volume translated into English.
Well, well, well. How the tables have turned! I'm so proud of Hatori. She has grown a lot over the course of the story and it shows in how she's handling her relationship with Hiromitsu. Instead, Rita is the pathetic and selfish one here. Bro needs to stop pussyfooting and make up his mind already.
