I never meant to build a life among the dead—but it was the one thing that made sense. The work was quiet, methodical. It gave me space to breathe. To keep things simple.
Then Patrick Dalton walked through the door.
Warm, charming, gentle, devastatingly perfect. He made my chest ache, even when I tried to keep him at arm’s length. And he made me want more.
And for a while, I let myself believe I could have that.
But life has a way of shifting itself. And the things we think we’ve buried don’t always stay gone.
Rachael Chadwick is a UK-based author with a fondness for the macabre and an insatiable curiosity for the peculiar. She has a habit of finding romance in the most unlikely places, filling her stories with unusual characters and happily-ever-afters that are all the sweeter for a little suffering along the way. When she's not dreaming up new worlds and putting her characters through emotional turmoil, she's usually wrangling her two sons or enthusiastically taking up another hobby she'll inevitably abandon. With a fascination for all things strange and unsettling, she firmly believes there's beauty to be found in the grotesque, and that even the most unlikely monsters deserve a love story of their own.
This was a gripping and insane psychological thriller/dark romance that explores trauma, obsession, emotional survival, mental health and intense/abusive relationships.
Firstly I’m glad I didn’t read reviews before reading this book cause so many of you need to hit that spoilers button before posting the review so many have given so much of the story away in your reviews.
Now onto my spoiler free review. This is the 2nd book that’s left me 🤯 this month! Usually I can see plot twists coming .. but this left me 😧 when it happened I had to go back and forth on a few pages to make sure I was reading it correctly. 😄 💀: Lev never meant to build a life among the dead—but it was the one thing that made sense. The work was quiet, methodical. It gave her space to breathe. Then Patrick came into her life. Warm, charming, handsome, perfect. But life has a way of shifting itself. And the things we think we’ve buried don’t always stay gone. 💀: I went into this blind only knowing it was a psychological dark romance. And I’m so glad I did cause it was absolutely brilliant. Was there red flags that Lev ignored yes .. but Bone Deep gave me all the emotions including making me cry. That alone makes it 5 stars. ⚠️Please remember to read the trigger warnings as there’s many. But if you don’t have any I would fully recommend diving into this one now.
Hello! It’s almost publication day for Bone Deep. Ahh, so exciting! I’ve been made aware that the QR codes in the paperback seem to be playing up a little, unfortunately I can’t do anything about that right now. So here are the links to my Spotify and Pinterest if you want some vibes!
i got this book from the authors tiktok in promotion of it!
i really loved the authors writing style a lot, and i loved the character of levana - i know why she made the choices she did and i get the stockholm syndrome thing but my GOD girl u should’ve run SO many times 😭😭
i hate patrick. i hate him. i know why he is the way he is and i get that, still find him absolutely insufferable and disgusting.
i HATE a pregnancy trope and honestly, every second of this book made me so uncomfortable but that’s not to say it’s a BAD book bc it isn’t, it’s meant to make you uncomfortable but oh my god it succeeds.
I loved elliot. team elliot forever. he is perfect.
i honestly had no idea where this book was going for the majority of the time which kept things fun. i had a fear that this was gonna become a harem book for a hot sec but glad it didn’t!
however bc i hated patrick so much i had to skim / skip all the smut/spice scenes (including improper use of embalming equipment 😔) which i have NEVER done before but it just made me feel sick to read 🤢 i could not vibe w them as a couple which honestly is a credit to how well his character is written.
honestly i think the portrayal of mental health issues was well done, and it showed the brutal reality of these issues which again made the book uncomfortable to read, but in a realistic way.
going from elsie silver to this was a WILD trajectory in my reading list (would not recommend this unless you want WHIPLASH 🤣🫨) but i think this author is great and i will definitely read more of her books!
First, it’s not a romance at all more like a horror story that reminds me to too much of the men today. The mmc starts all warm and innocent and quickly takes a steep dive into a terrifying person. The smut was good but since the mmc needed to genuinely get help, I couldn’t get into so I don’t think it was needed after a bit. I felt so much for the fmc but I definitely wanted to smack her up the head to knock some sense into her. The descriptive writing made it feel like you were physically in some scenes in the book. Overall good as a psychological thriller, but I don’t think it should be marketed as a romance at all when really only the smut is the “romance” and once you start reading the mmc pov the smut becomes uncomfortable.

Really tried to like this given how many 5 star reviews but what the fuck??? I feel deeply for this man and how much he spiraled after his child’s death and his wife’s suicide but holy shit you could not get me to like this MMC if you tried. I am so glad he got treatment in the end but holy shit??! Like he literally dug up his dead child and wife and put his SKELETAL twin babies in a crib. Then secretly impregnated his new obsession and LOCKED HER IN A ROOM WITH HIS DECAYING SON. I’m so glad they did not end up together. Yes I am glad he is healing from his trauma but if they ended up in a romantic relationship I’d be pissed. I’m honestly traumatized and I love DR. I could’ve handled his manipulative behavior but yeeesh this shit was wild. I will admit the portrayal of his psychosis was fascinating but yeah this was not for me.

Had the absolute honour of being an ARC reader of this masterpiece. Definitely take heed of the trigger warnings. They are there with good reason, but Bone Deep is a phenomenal read from start to finish! I know the saying is "Don't judge a book by its cover," but in this case, the story is as beautiful and dark as the cover suggests!
What doesn't this book have?! Spice? Check! Drama? Tenfold! A well thought-out plot? 110% There are more twists and turns than a helter skelter. Right from the start, I was locked in, and I couldn't put it down!
Rachael, you went above and beyond! The details, the descriptions, even the small details; I felt like I was there!
Absolutely LOVED this book! Cannot wait to see what Rachael has lined up for us in the future. Chef's kiss!
I was kindly sent an ARC to read and review, all opinions are my own.
I don't even know where to begin with this review!
I was gripped from the beginning, the amount of detail not just in the characters but also the details of mortuary work which really made the story come to life. Rachael has written some really powerful characters and makes you feel strong emotions for and against them.
The way you didn't know what would happen next, the intensity at times of the plot and character choices had me in a chokehold. Also has a good amount of spice. I think I was on the edge of my seat especially with the last quarter of the book!
5/5 would definitely recommend
Make sure you check the TWs in the book before reading.
This book gave me Tobias and Aria vibes especially toward the end…but in a good way. It obviously had a way different storyline.
It does start off fairly “normal” but definitely something…once you hit that one part though you start to see the madness. It escalates so quickly but in the best way. Honestly some parts are heartbreaking because of the trauma and what that trauma does to a persons brain. I absolutely loved the ending.
This book is so fucking dumb I’m so frustrated that I even spent my time on it.
The MMC had some crazy trauma and I really felt for him but holy shit keeping your child’s corpse in a crib and forcing your romantic interest to sleep next to it ??? Oh yeah and then force her to get preggers but poking holes in the condoms? Yep cool

This book was deranged and I genuinely mean that in the best way possible😂
I felt like I experienced this story exactly as I should have being completely unprepared for the twists. And wow… they were so well done. It was sweet, tense, and disturbing.
That emotional whiplash was intense, and I think that’s exactly what made the story work so well on me. And the ending was fitting for the story. It felt right, even if it wasn’t traditionally happy.
This was BRILLIANT! I was hooked from page 1, The plot twist completely floored me I genuinely did not see that coming at all Holyyyy shit 😳
I absolutely loved the FMC Levana! As the MMC for Patrick… I’m not saying a word…You’ll have to find out for yourself 😬 If you’re gonna read this go in blind! The less you know the better IMO!
Wow. I don’t even know how to gather my thoughts on this. I loved how unique this was. It had me on the edge of my seat for 65% of the book. This story really showed the dark and dangerous side to untreated mental health while also showing the side of loving someone who needs help.
BUT the FMC, Levana really made such stupid decisions when it was in her face how wrong things were. It made me so mad. I couldn’t put this down it was so bingeable. IMO I think this should not be marketed as much of a romance.
I was almost calling in sick to work with whiplash and a dislocated jaw because of this book! Talk about twists. This story has the best twist of 2025 for me! What starts off as an innocent love story became dark and twisted! I hated Patrick's character, I was team Elliot throughout! This was my first book from this author, and after this one, it definitely will not be my last!
Oh god, this book has one of my favourite tropes (or is it twists?) ever. One that I rarely speak out about because it is so rare to find any book that does it so well. I've read one Japanese shoujo manga with this trope, and that was it. I can't even talk about it because I don't want to jinx it. That was how sacred this trope is. One day, mark my word, I'll find that perfect book with this perfect trope (or is it a twist?).
With that said, this book definitely was going in the right direction for that trope. It almost hits the spot. Almost, the keyword. Because, man, I love it when it goes off the rails, but something about the execution made it all kind of... I don't know what word to use... maybe slightly disappointing? It was almost perfect, the whole mindfuckness, but then, it turned more depressing than I expected. Maybe that was not what this book is about. Perhaps it is intended to be depressing and unsatisfying. Messy ending was not the goal here. If so, this is all my opinion. This book may be perfect for you guys who want some realism, heartache, mindfuckedness and darkness in your dark romance.
If you want to know if this book has an HEA?
And yes, this is a very vague of a review, trust me, you want to go into this blindly. Trust me.
So, as an introduction to me and how I found this book. I was doomscrolling TikTok as you do and Rachael Chadwick popped up on my FYP giving the giggliest run down of her upcoming book and it's 'shopping list'... Curiosity piqued I checked her profile and saw more of the same. A few days later I'm loving the vibes so much I download the book to my kindle and within 2 days I've blitzed through the story of Levana and Patrick et all.
My usual reading material tends to be of the sci-fi, fantasy, dystopia side of things.. so a dark romance novel was not something I was expecting to like, let alone love but... It was a whirlwind of thrills, spice that definitely tuns up the temperature by several hundred degrees and twists that have you sat with your hand over your mouth like, WHAT!
If you like your romance with a healthy dose of sex and psychological digging.. this is one for you. I absolutely loved it and think it should be right up the top of the best seller lists.
The perfect man: handsome, funny, charming. When it seems to good to be true, it often is. Which was definitely the case with Patrick.
I went into this knowing it's a psychological dark romance. It's there in the title. This means you know that Patrick isn't going to be as perfect as he is initially portrayed to be. For me, it was the line 'she's soon going to be a Dalton, she'll be here to help' that hit hard and was when the twists really started warping into something disturbing.
Bone Deep had a dark atmosphere from the offset as the mfc works in embalming. This setting really keeps you guessing where this book is going to go and I'm very relieved to report there is no necro in this. But there is at least one kinky scene that was rather disturbing but, I will admit, written rather well. I almost feel guilty for enjoying the spicy scenes in this book lol.
I was questioning Levana's decisions, would she really have to continue on having sex with a man who put her through all that? Would she really continue to love him? Her inability to try and get help annoyed me a little bit, especially the hospital scene. I haven't quite figure out if these feelings are the result of good or bad writing.
I thought with how far this book goes, it wouldn't shy away from a darker, more deadly ending. The ending was ok but felt a bit lacklustre to me. I didn't feel satisfied by it, but again, this might be how the author wanted me to feel.
Picked this one up following a recommendation and HOLY HELL… WHAT DID I JUST READ?! 😳
That opening chapter had me HOOKED, and that very first twist?! JAW. ON. THE. FLOOR. 🤯
This book is absolutely PACKED with WTF moments, and every single time I thought I'd figured it out…
BAM 💥 NOPE. WRONG AGAIN.
Twist after twist. Page after page. Just when I thought Rachel Chadwick couldn't possibly throw anything else at me… SHE DID!
AND CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE SPICE?! 🥵🔥
Because the spice in this book just HITS DIFFERENT!!
THAT SCENE IN THE MORTUARY?!
SHEEEEEESH!!! 🥵💀🔥
I don't think I'll ever look at a mortuary the same way again! 👀
Now, I personally don't have any triggers, so I went into this one completely blind, and WHAT AN EXPERIENCE THAT WAS!
⚠️ BUT PLEASE, PLEASE CHECK THE TRIGGER WARNINGS! ⚠️
This is a DARK psychological romance with some seriously heavy themes. Look after your mental health first. 🖤
I've always wondered when that elusive 6 STAR READ would come along. The book that would completely blow my mind, leave me questioning EVERYTHING and make 5 stars simply not enough.
WELL, RACHEL CHADWICK… YOU DID IT!! 👏🖤
This wasn't just a book I read. This was a book I EXPERIENCED.
And I am STILL processing what the hell just happened!! 🤯
🖤 6 STARS. NO HESITATION. NO REGRETS. 🖤
💬 Have you read Bone Deep? Because I NEED to talk about this one with someone who understands!! 😂
⭐️ 2.5: The way I was recommended this book by a random girlie I met at the bookstore… like wtf… I was not expecting this insanity
Not to victim blame but she’s still in love with him after him secretly impregnating her, keeping his dead family’s corpses, falsely imprisoning her… the list goes on…
The first 40% of the book was honestly really interesting and I appreciated the twists… but the fact that she went along with everything for so long, kept the babies, encouraged him…. Stayed with him lowkey… At first I was like ok girl smart thinking going along with his crazy ass to gtf out of there… but no she just kept staying for far too long idk like I get the ptsd and trauma aspect like I think they wanted me to feel bad for everyone involved but really I think they’re both stupid and I hated the second half of the book like girl should’ve killed him so he could be with his family idk
This book is definitely dark but I wouldn’t say romantic 😅

Wow, after being recommended this by a friend I jumped into it without a lot of knowledge of what it was about, except for it's a psychological thriller. The way this book sucked me in and had me in it's grip throughout was quite honestly no mean feat. I have been in somewhat of a book slump and this pulled me out like Patrick pulled his wife up from the grave lol.
In all seriousness though the way this was written was genius, I'm unfortunately someone who often predicts where a story is going and this one swiped the rug straight from beneath my feet.
All in all an easy 5 stars. Can't wait to read more from this author

I devoured this book in a day. Fast-paced writing without missing any details. Dark romance and emotionally charged. I was so invested in these characters. I didn't see the twist coming.
Rachael, please keep them coming because your debut book was awesome.
