Deepest, darkest December. A high school next to a military base. It’s more than the end of the school day, it’s shaping up to be the end of the world. Students are trapped across the school and must work together to fight their way out. They are an unlikely group: the popular, the geeky, the heroic and then...the dealer; the good, the bad and the ugly. Led by teacher Betsy and kick-ass student Midge, they must battle their way through the hordes of the undead, and with each other, to survive. Beware the student body.
Warning: contains violence, drugs, swearing, demonic glee clubs, bad musical theatre, teenage tantrums, lust, bloodthirsty principals, pervy PE teachers, grammar fails, partial nudity and scenes of a sexual nature.
"Then she froze. Beyond the closed glass doors the open space was teeming with zombies, swaying slightly but, for the most part, in stasis. Being this close was very unsettling…She could feel, and hear, the others jostling behind her, trying to see. ‘What’s it like, Midge?’ This was Ellie, so close she could feel the breath on her cheek. ‘Like? It’s like Primani on a Saturday afternoon.’"
You know when you finish a book and your emotions are so over the place, you can’t even comprehend where to start when writing a review? Well that’s me at the moment; completely speechless and scatter-brained.
But what I can tell you is that I absolutely bloody loved this book.
‘Zombie School: A Deaducation’ is a rip-roaring read that will have you turning the pages right up until you have finished and even then leaving you wanting more.
I was completely hooked, and when I wasn’t reading it I was playing it out in my head. This book occupied my thoughts constantly; even while I was asleep.
Jamie’s writing style I find is perfect for this book. Written in third person, but jumping to different characters throughout the chapters I feel helped with dynamics of the book as a whole, and to be perfectly honest I don’t think it would’ve worked as well if written any differently.
The characters are very well thought out and developed just the right amount that you start to feel a relationship build between you and them. They are relatable, and very real. You feel their anguish, their fear and their grief emanating from the pages, but the way the deal with everything that is going on around them in commendable. They work together, keep each other going strong when they feel like giving up, all with one goal in mind; to get out alive.
Jamie, I applaud you and your writing. You have delivered a brilliant and unique story that sticks with you even after you have finished. I cursed you a lot while reading ‘Zombie School’ , but it’s one on the many reasons why I liked it so much.
Thank you for the story, the characters and the visualisations. I hope you keep writing and I cannot wait to see what future realises you will bring.
