Eine schwarze Stele wird auf dem Mond entdeckt, Stanley Kubricks "2001-Odyssee im Weltraum" läßt grüßen!, und offenbart dabei fremde, unendlich weit fortgeschrittene Technologie. Das Material hochverdichtet - Neutronenstern-Materie oder ähnliches. Natürlich wollen alle in 2082 existierenden Raumfahrt-Nationen an dieser Technologie teilhaben - oder besser, jeder will sie für sich alleine haben. Amerika, China, Russland, Europa konkurrieren, ja stehen sich misstrauisch bis feindlich gegenüber. Amerikanische, chinesische, russische und europäische Wissenschafts-Crews auf dem Mond dagegen finden zur Zusammenarbeit oder gar zu Freundschaft. Doch dann wird die Stele durch die Chinesen, denen die "Dunkler Wald-Doktrin", die Cixin Liu in seiner "Trisolaris-Trilogie" formuliert hat, tief in der politischen Seele verwurzelt ist, mit einer Atombombe gesprengt - besser niemand bekommt den Zugriff, bevor der Gegner gewinnt ..! Nur - daß die Stele nicht vernichtet wird - aber beschädigt wird.
Wie fast zu erwarten, tritt der zweite Teil der "Stelen-Trilogie" zunächst eher auf der Stelle. Drei ausführliche Handlungsteile zu einem Thema, da bleibt immer viel Platz, um in der Handlung etwas abzudriften. Schließlich will man sich die Höhepunkte für den letzten Teil vorbehalten.
So verfällt Brandon Q. Morris zunächst wieder seinem Hang zur peniblen Detail-Schilderung. Nichts ist unwichtig genug, um nicht bis ins Kleinste geschildert zu werden.
Im weiteren Verlauf wird die Erzählung etwas dichter - die verschiedenen Teams nähern sich der Stele auf unterschiedliche Weise an. Es kommt zu Unfällen, Rettungsversuchen, und die Ereignisse werden immer unbegreiflicher.
Und dann hören wir von der "String-Theorie", 11 Dimensionen, teils enorm verkürzt respektive "eingerollt". 2-, 4-, 5-dimensionale Räume. Hier wird auch wieder Edwin A. Abotts "Flatland" zitiert. Alles ist denkbar. All diese möglichen Universen sind über Stelen verbunden. Reisen durch Raum und Dimensionen sind möglich und finden statt. Unsere Welt eventuell eine Projektion auf der "Innenwand" eines Schwarzen Lochs. Die Erbauer dieses Stelen-Systems eine uralte Zivilisation aus der "Inflationsphase des Universums" - der frühesten Zeit unseres Universums, als es nach dem Urknall weder Zeit noch Raum gab ?!
In diesem Roman kommen auch ein paar Bekannte aus früheren Morris-Romanen zurück, so ist auch diese Trilogie in BQM-Futute History einzuordnen.
Und am Ende taucht - wie ein Fingerzeig - noch eine zweite Stele im erdnahen Raum auf, die wohl im 3. Band die Trilogie zu einem guten und hoffentlich nachvollziehbaren Ende führt.
Schön und interessant ist wieder der naturwissenschaftliche Teil des Buches, in dem uns BQM die lokale Blase mit den entdeckten Exo-Planeten vorstellt, die gleichzeitig auch Orte in BQMs Future History sind...

Truly fascinating story and perfect extension to the first book. Both have had me on the edge of my seat awaiting the next turn of events. You'll never look at the moon the same way again.

A nuclear explosion at the monolith causes problems....

While Jun managed to prevent the Chinese from blowing up the Monolith, once she leaves it, they try again and are successful. This doesn't destroy it, but damage is done as a storm forms on the moon and a space time fold makes landing on the moon impossible. Ron and JP come up with a way to reach the moon, though only Ron attempts it and Jun has to rescue him. Meanwhile , an old friend identifies another strange occurrence when an asteroid appears to gain mass from nowhere....
It turns out that the Monolith has transported Linwei to other planets as he tries to get back to the moon...
A complex, heavily scientific story unfolds with intrigue, suspense, surprises, aliens and peril as events occur in this intriguing middle book of the trilogy...

I quit. The character built a raft out of "23 logs, each 2 meters long" with just a knife and bandages that just happen to be long enough (how many 100's of yards would that take?). Then he paddles it, first on the left then on the right "to avoid blisters". How does he reach each side of what must be a fairly large raft? More importantly, how does he proceed forward, paddling on one side then the other on that same large raft.

I'm done. Finding out more about the monolith isn't worth wading through this kind of tripe.
