This book was such a wild ride—it felt like a mix between Harry Potter and The Hunger Games! From magical creatures like Kneazles to a terrifying group like the Chaos Cult, the world-building is both whimsical and chilling.

The baking element was my favorite part. Baking with emotions was such a unique and powerful idea—you could feel what the recipes were meant to express, and it made me want to taste them myself.

The characters really stood out. Old Grandpappy Thaddeus was someone I wish we’d seen more of, and Klaw was the perfect “love to hate” villain. I also enjoyed the unlikely alliances that formed along the way.

The plot starts simply enough—a girl trying to save her bakery—but layers on like a cake: competitions, dark collectors, and even the fate of the world. At times the story felt a bit chaotic and hard to follow, but the excitement carried me through.

The cliffhanger ending left me eager for book two. If you love magical competitions, sinister villains, and a dash of emotional baking, this is a story you won’t want to miss.

Thank you L.C. Maplewood and Nooksprout for the ARC.

Witch-baked follows hearth witch Lina as she attempts to save her family’s bakery. She enters a baking competition which turns out to be more than she bargained for. Throughout Lina’s journey, we meet a variety of supporting characters, all of whom are well written and rounded out. I personally love the sentient sourdough starter, Grandpappy Thaddeus.
I really enjoyed the world building in this book. Lina infuses her recipes with emotion, an original idea that’s executed perfectly, and the conflict between arcane magicians and hearth magicians was interesting.
By turns cozy and suspenseful, Witch-baked left me eager to see the continuation of the story set in Lina’s world. L.C. Maplewood’s writing is borderline lyrical and vividly descriptive.
I really enjoyed this book, and I encourage anyone who enjoys reading cozy fantasy and slow burn romance to pick up Witch-baked.

A Magical Treat!

If you’re looking for a cozy fantasy with baking, witches, and just enough intrigue to keep you hooked, this is it! Lina’s hearth magic is beautiful and emotional—her journey to prove herself and save her bakery made me root for her from page one.

The book is full of:

Family secrets

Witchy vibes

Mystery and dangerous quests

A villain you’ll love to hate

A baking competition that had me stressed and hungry at the same time

Some parts reminded me of Like Water for Chocolate with how it tied feelings to food and magic.

With the cliffhanger ending, I hope a second book is in the works.
