Imogene in New Orleans
At the ripe age of 73, Imogene Deal McGregor has a penchant for following her own instincts, as well as more grit and spunk than her hypochondriac son, Billy McGregor, and Billy's impulsive partner Jackson Miller can handle. The boys take Imogene to New Orleans with their devilishly handsome English bulldog Goose, hoping to visit friends and attend a second line parade, but moments after arriving in the French Quarter, they find their friend Glenway Gilbert murdered in his art gallery. Immediately, Imogene and the boys run into a temperamental and ethically-challenged lieutenant who appears hell-bent on neglecting the crime, compelling them to seek answers themselves. As they delve into Glenway Gilbert's murder, Imogene and the boys realize the deceased artist was surrounded by suspicious friends and lovers. With Goose the bulldog by their side, Jackson and Billy seek answers among old friends and new enemies, while Imogene follows her own ideas on the case. But the sooner they solve the murder, the sooner they can get back to catching beads and eating pralines.

Just finished this book. Loved the colorful, outspoken characters. It was something different, a breath of fresh air as far as a murder mystery. Murder mixed with humor. I especially liked the Imogene character. The woman is unafraid.
I laid in the bed at night reading this book and chuckling. I definitely look forward to reading more stories with these people.

This was definitely an awesome win on Goodreads! I loved this book,from beginning to end...and Goose,the English Bulldog,totally won my heart! The book is very well written,and it is easy to imagine yourself being right there with them. If you like a good mystery,you'll love this book!

Love this cast of characters and the setting for this fun read. It's close to home so I sort of went on the adventure with Imogene, her son Billie, and his partner, Jackson....oh and Goose the bulldog!
I live on the Alabama Gulf Coast and am very familiar with the area (Alabama, New Orleans). This one primarily occurs in New Orleans. The book cover art is just some of the best! It captures all the things one loves about NOLA.
This little, close knit, Alabama family takes a vacay to NOLA to see some parades and meet up with some much missed ,old friends. Soon after arriving, they find one of their friends murdered in an art gallery. The search for the murderer begins and much of the plot revolves around that. But-it is so funny at times and these characters are heart warming and relatable. While there are some very serious secret and dishonest activities all throughout...it's all so amusing to follow. The characters make this story. But, because I am close to the setting, I found it all the more enjoyable. There was even made mention of a character being from Demopolis, AL. I know. Who the heck has heard of that???? Well, I have! It's part of my old stomping grounds as I grew up in Eutaw, AL. only 15 minutes away. SO COOL! FOR ME!!! :-) Hunter Murphy knows his setting and I enjoyed quite a lot revisiting many places I have been before in the Crescent City. I was back on the ferry to Algiers. Eating beignets and people watching while drinking a cafe' au lait at Cafe DuMonde. Walking around Jackson Square. Enjoying the French Quarter and the river walk. NOLA is such a beautiful city. Where I live, Mobile, AL, has many of the same accents. We also enjoy Mardi Gras and a good parade, and at times mirth and merriment.
Goose the bulldog is my favorite character. Like my own dog, Bella, he gets too many treats. He is involved in much of the mischief and silly behavior. Very lovable and he has some of the cutest nicknames. His grandma, Imogene, spoils him at every turn. And that is the way it should be! On the author's FB page, there are pics of Goose and he is such a cutie. Can ya tell I am animal lover?
If you want a great little cozy mystery set in the south, full of shenanigans and memorable, eclectic, characters...you really must read this. For those who can read for free with Kindle Unlimited...don't wait. Download it soon. I look forward to reading the next installment in the adventures of these fun characters, Imogene, Billy, Jackson, Goose the bulldog. Mr. Murphy is a talented writer and this is my second novel by him. I know it won't be my last!

Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans??
My brother is gay. I wish he had friends like Imogene, Jackson, and Billy in his life. I loved those characters. I also loved Neil and Allen.
As a black woman, I appreciated Imogene's relationship with Lena Ward too. They almost had a buddy-cop relationship. (Fair warning: this book has some Southern dialogue but it's done really well and I thought it was so funny. Imogene and Lena are so cute together.)
This book definitely reminded me "What It Means To Miss New Orleans"
The murder victim Glenway Gilbert had many people who wanted to kill him but just as many who loved him. I truly enjoyed this book and I've recommended it to my brother, who is in the middle of it now.

Imogene in New Orleans is a charming novel, that transports you to New Orleans, which is a world all to its own. Kudos to Hunter Murphy for breaking what I call the 4 pillars of the southern novel, religion, industrialization, race and agrarianism and coming up with something all together unique. This book was both engaging and thought provoking and I look forward to many more adventures with Imogene, Goose and the boys!

Imogene, her son, his partner, and their sweet English Bulldog Goose are in New Orleans visiting friends. On their first night, they find their friend murdered and everyone they know and encounter seems to have a motive and suspicious behavior. Detective Rogers seems to do everything in his power to NOT investigate the homicide. Imogene, Billy, and Jackson each try to figure out what happened and find themselves up to their necks in trouble.
From the beginning, some of the characters wormed their way into my heart. Imogene is a no-nonsense, independent woman that pampers Goose too much. Her son Billy is anxiety prone and snarky at times. Their friend Neil is a spitfire and cracked me up.
Several sections in the book had me grinning and smirking, including a carriage ride turned chase scene.
There were a couple things that I felt were a touch unrealistic.
Some things I’d like to see in the next novel:
1. More of Jackson’s personality and what motivates him. He seemed more like a narrator than a full three-dimensional character in this first novel of the series.
2. Another side to Billy than his hypochondria. What strength does he bring to the table in his relationship with Jackson?
I know next to nothing about NOLA, but it was fun to immerse myself in the mystique and magic of the area.

The old Imogene thinks she is going on a vacation trip to New Orleans, but she soon realizes that it won't happen. The old woman and her sons discover the dead body of a friend. From this moment, they are sent in a murder investigation where no one can be trusted.
I really liked the diversity of the characters involved in this fiction. From the old british granny to the corrupted policeman. Hunter Murphy shows a great imagination and these characters are well described. The story is intriguing, but, surprisingly, I found it mostly funny. Want a smooth, but captivating, reading; You won't be deceived by this one. You got to be used to slang, because it seems like the old ladies in this book like to mess with words.

I enjoyed this book very much. The characters were just that, characters. Poor Billy, between Jackson and Mamma running around, its a wonder he had anything left in that medicine bag of his. Just loved this book.

This delightful author has created a debut with all the elements: fun setting, quirky characters, a mystery & a dog. My favorite quote these days is the opening line of this book. No, I won't share it...buy the book! Looking forward to future adventures. What will Imogene & the boys get up to next?

This is a joy ride through New Orleans with an eccentric and hilarious cast. There were a lot of characters, so I had to stay on my toes, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. (Buddy the Hustler was probably one of my favorites behind Imogene.)

This book was so much fun. And it definitely was a mystery because I had no idea whodunit until it was revealed. I suspected everyone except Imogene and the boys at different times.
The zany action will have you giggling. The descriptions of New Orleans are fantastic. If you've never been to New Orleans, you're going to feel like you have been. Two quotes from the book that I feel describe New Orleans perfectly:
"The street smelled faintly sour and sweet, as if the fruity drink mixers had spoiled."
"The only way he could try stick out in New Orleans was if he were walking down the street on fire."
Imogene. I mean, who can't love someone who still uses the expression "nerve pill". My favorite character was Jackson, probably because his scenes made me laugh the most. I can't wait to read the next in the series.
I would read again and would recommend to friends and fans of cozy mysteries.

Good Potential
This book is really rough. It desperately needs the work of a good editor, both for grammar & spelling as well as for storyline & plot. That said, there is something here worth an editor's time & trouble. The characterizations are good & so is the sense of place. I think they'd shine even more once not strangled by the tangled mess of a plot. It's not the actual story arc that is the problem so much as the execution. Again, it would take a good editor to point out the issues to the author who is so enmeshed in the writing he can't see it objectively. As for the mystery portion of the story, the "wrong turns" become ponderous & repetitive. Also, too many of the "right turns" happen off stage with no involvement of the reader. The potential of Imogene & Lena as a team of sleuths is tremendous. I hope the author stays with them and gives both their characters and his writing skills time to develop. For their sake and his, I also hope that he employs the use of a good editor. It is not a slur against his writing. Even the best writers are too enmeshed in the trees to see the whole forest. As a personal note, I was happy to see poor southerners portrayed with dignity, brains, integrity, & accepting, inclusive hearts. It was a welcome respite from the poor, ignorant & intolerant stereotype.

I downloaded this book on a lark and am so glad I did. It's a curious mystery not like the usual books I read. The characters popped. They entertained me from the first page. Imogene is a funny old woman.

The first thing you’ll notice about this book is not its story, but the amazing cover art. It draws you in as good cover art should and makes you want to find out more about the story. The title, however, as the next to notice does not appeal to me. Once you flip the book over however, you can read the synopsis, which is so odd that it’s got to be good!
The story is very fluently written from different third person points of view, though mostly from Jackson’s. Even though the writing style was not quite to my taste, the ease and seamlessness with which Murphy switches between characters made it a great read. Another plus that comes with his writing are the amazing southern (Alabama/New Orleans) accents in the book. It makes you feel like you’re walking the streets right beside the characters.
There are a couple of very important characters in this book, most of which are gay. The amazing part is, that being gay is not their main purpose. It just happens to be that way. It’s refreshing to read something where homosexual people aren’t used in writing merely for their homosexuality. They also don’t portray any of the stereotypes; they all have their own unique qualities and oddities. Then, there’s one of the other main characters Imogene, she’s like your grandma: loving, considerate, and a little rude sometimes because old people think they can get away with it. She’s still got a sharp head on her shoulders, which helps her along quite a bit, trying to solve the murder.
All in all, a very interesting band of characters who should not be solving a murder, yet manage to do so without getting themselves killed in the process. From beginning to end the book is filled with excitement, action and a New Orleans atmosphere. It’s definitely worth a read!

When one of Billy and Jackson’s friends in the Crescent City turns up dead, they all get drawn into the mystery, and Imogene shows her mettle by defying her guardians and setting off on her own.
The whole book is a vivid, fond description of New Orleans and its denizens, from art dealers to street hustlers. Imogene is all down with the gays—she loves her hypochondriac son (who’s a nurse) and his longtime partner (who’s just a little bossy). In spite of a limp from a previously broken hip, Imogene gets around, and she’ll be darned if she’ll let anyone shut her in.
Because of an aggressive and unhelpful policeman, this odd trio, plus their local friends, an older local couple named Neil and Allen, take the investigation into their own hands. They tackle it like the amateurs they are, spurred on by emotion and intuition, without much thought to proper procedure or personal safety. As a result, the tone of the book is a little bit Three Stooges and a little bit Keystone Kops. As the boys and their friends bumble around, making stupid choices and causing general confusion; Imogene finds an ally in Lena, a neighborhood praline-maker. Lena has her own wheels, and his opens another door to misadventure.
What was particularly enjoyable for me in Murphy’s debut novel is both the setting—which explores a city I know and love—and the cast of characters. Here is a vision of the Deep South where gay folk of varying ages are neither stereotyped nor rejected. One suspects Imogene is a church-going lady, but that doesn’t keep her from loving her boys in spite of their annoying aspects. The book reminds us that New Orleans is a very gay city, but also that it is part of a larger social community where people take care of their own.

Nicely done debut. Good plot line, excellent setting but the book shines from its characters. Running the gamut from quirky to sassy to infuriating, this colorful case of characters (including Goose, an English Bulldog) will keep you entertained. Enjoyed it.

This was a good first novel. It is a combination convoluted mystery and action book. There are a number of well developed characters who will be featured in follow-up books.

I just didn’t like this story. I didn’t care about the murder victim or if it was ever solved and the characters are what I like to call “running around like chickens with their heads cut off” – sorry for the visual but that is the best way to describe it. The problem with this is the author purposefully has two characters with all the information who don’t reveal any of it until the end. So 70% of the book is the antics of the other characters that have no impact on the mystery or lead to any resolution and the reader will not be able to figure out the motive because of this. Notice I wrote “motive” and not bad guy because the bad guy is quite obvious due to his lack of continual interaction or reasoning for his actions. Which is odd considering the main male characters accuse just about everyone else of the crime in this book with barely any reasoning.
As someone from Texas, I learned through this narrator that someone with a strong Southern accent can still be monotone. The narrator’s voice did not change or have any inflection for any of the characters whether they were screaming or angry or happy. Even I know someone from Alabama does not sound like someone from New Orleans yet the characters all sound the same except for Lena.

What a fun book....... Imogene is a self-sufficient, outspoken Granny! The boys, Neil, Allen, Billy & Jackson, do not listen to her at their own peril!! Especially when Granny teams up with her new friend Lena, who runs a Cajun food trailer there in New Orleans. When Billy, Jackson & Granny arrive in New Orleans they go to see a friend of theirs only to discover that he has been bludgeoned to death! As they search for the murderer they find many suspects, but narrowing the list down they encounter many obstacles.........

not my thing, but cute enough. a bit too long in my opinion, which made it into a page-turner less because i was dying to know how the mystery was solved and more because i was impatient for it to wrap up

When Imogene Deal McGregor takes break in New Orleans little does she know that she will find herself playing detective in order to find out who killed a family friend.
When Imogene arrives in New Orleans with her hypochondriac son, Billy McGregor, and Billy’s partner Jackson, they find their friend Glenway Gilbert murdered in his art gallery and after a run in with a rather hostile police detective they decide to do some detecting themselves and find out who killed their dear friend Glenway.
And so the adventure begins as Imogene negotiates her way in New Orleans, chasing down suspects, sampling the local night life, enjoying the second line parades, eating local cuisine, gathering clues and managing to having the time of her life and some really peculiar adventures as she tracks down a killer.
Billy and Jackson are anxious to keep Imogene out of trouble and so they decide to join this investigation so that they can make sure Imogene does not get hurt.
What follows then is a madcap but humorous adventure in which Imogene demonstrates that although she might have grey hair she is not yet ready for the grave, and Billy and Jackson struggle to keep up with her, and end up having some rather hair raising adventures of their own.
“Boys, looks like a hurr’cane tore through here. My panties and bras is everywhere. Who the devil would want an old woman’s underclothes?”
And that is just a little example of the adventures of Imogene. And of course in true Agatha Christie style just like Miss Marple Imogene gets to the very bottom of things in her own thorough way.
This is a very enjoyable and entertaining mystery with a superb audio narration. The narrator really brought the story to life managing to provide realistic deep south accents and differentiate between the range of characters. I enjoyed listening to this. Together with a good story the audio version is an excellent listening experience.

So I blew through this book in one sitting and I have no regrets about staying up until 5am to finish it. Not only was the cover absolutely gorgeous but the characters were as well.
I have to say Imogene and Goose were hands down my favourites. It's so rare to see a dog this involved in a story and I adored it. And Imogene Oh my god. She is so HILARIOUS and spunky and down right awesome.
I was told that I might not get some references in this because I am from the UK but I had Zero problems with this. So if you're being put off by the setting or how they talk PLEASE DO NOT BE. There is nothing at all confusing about this book and I've already recommended it to three of my friends.
Also the gay couple in this is ADORABLE. They're not cliche at all. There's just so much I adored about this novel and when it was over I found myself a little sad because the sequel isn't out yet and I can't believe there's not more Imogene to dive straight into.
Move over Agatha Christie. This was AMAZING.

I was told that I might not get some references in this because I am from the UK but I had Zero problems with this. So if you're being put off by the setting or how they talk PLEASE DO NOT BE. There is nothing at all confusing about this book and I've already recommended it to three of my friends.
Also the gay couple in this is ADORABLE. They're not cliche at all. There's just so much I adored about this novel and when it was over I found myself a little sad because the sequel isn't out yet and I can't believe there's not more Imogene to dive straight into.
Move over Agatha Christie. This was AMAZING.

I liked this book and its characters. The main character, Imogene, reminds me of a wild and crazy Southern grandmother. I loved the setting of New Orleans. Though I've never been there before, I've always been fascinated with the area and absolutely absorbed the descriptions of the city. It was fun to see the different directions the investigation took and all the people who were suspects. I listened to the Audible Audio version narrated by Lee Ann Howlett and thought her narration was spot on for how the characters were described. I've listened to a few of the other books she has narrated, so it was fun to listen to her doing an Alabama accent. Overall, if you like mysteries and fun characters, this is a great book to check out.

Well written fun story with a boatload of quirky characters who quickly become real to the reader. The characters truly make the book both interesting and memorable. Nothing wrong with the plot, I just focused more on the characters.
It also felt like a nice visit back to NOLA because of the clear descriptions of the area.
I was fortunate to be able to listen/read, and I feel that Lee Ann Howlett did a fine job as narrator. Some might quibble about her minimal southern accent, but I feel that it is an blessing for those of us whose ears cannot entangle a deep drawl unless facing the speaker.

3 1/2 - 4. Not deep, but fun. Most female protagonists in mysteries are young, lithe, erudite, and with the sexual morals of a rabbit. The female protagonist here is a 7e3 year old lower middle class person from Alabama with arthritis so bad she lims, and, for having a son who is gay, as are almost all the people in this book, there is NO sex.

Bad sign when you dislike the title character
I didn't like any of the characters except Jackson.
I wanted this book to be over by chapter 20. If Billy checked his blood pressure one more time... I couldn't wait to be done with this book.

Very hard to keep up. Story was not smooth at all and not sure what was going on with the style of writing. Characters were not anyone I would want to know. Very obnoxious.
