This starts off looking like it’s planning to eschew a truckload of shonen stereotypes, so it’s a bit of a bummer that it succumbs to nearly every one of them by the time we’ve reached the end of the first volume.
Kuro is an exorcist with a single-minded focus on hunting and destroying demons. He also actively avoids his duty to marry and cough up an heir to his lineage. Then, he meets Fuyu, who has prepared herself to be the bride Kuro needs.
This part is kind of cute, honestly, and I like that Kuro and Fuyu have experienced very similar tragedies adjacent to the threat of demons, yet they took much different lessons from them. Fuyu really looks like she can help Kuro find more to his life than killing.
Naturally, this marriage comes with a horrible cost to the bride and, before you know it, Fuyu is possessed by a demon (see: manga title). The only real change is that she gets fox ears, suggesting that the demon works for the marketing department in its off hours.
Suddenly Fuyu is on the run and Kuro is using his skills to track down his bride. At this point I figured this was going to swerve into some heavy flirting territory, as the two of them seem to be enjoying this idea of being hunter and hunted.
But, gotta have demons. Fuyu tries to lift the curse, gets in trouble, Kuro saves her. They decide to work together to lift the curse, which at least makes them into an interesting coupling we rarely see in manga since they already like one another.
Then they stumble into a black market, which happens to be a black hole of shonen tropes. A female gang leader who wears the traditional bindings around her overly huge breasts, a team of exorcist hunters who are all a bunch of weirdos with unusual abilities (they literally exhausted me just by showing up on the page), and another big battle plus a silly stay of execution that promises more problems.
There’s a better story here, basically, and the times it peeks through are way more interesting than what we end up with. You can tell exactly where the first demon attack on Fuyu is going, although I did appreciate the grotesque design involved.
It just becomes a version of something that I have read and tended to not care about really quickly. It’s not like it’s a terrible story, but it is often running down the rails while haplessly jettisoning the slightest hints of creativity.

Vous êtes amateurs d’aventures fantastiques prenant place dans le Japon d’autrefois avec créatures et autres kyubi. Vous avez lu et aimé Inuyasha, voici sa resaucée actuelle.
Nous devons ce shonen de Square Enix reclassé en seinen chez nous à Anju Hino, autrice déjà de Vatican Miracle Examiner qui avait été publié chez Komikku au début des années 2020. Son succès au Japon fut immédiat avec une premier chapitre qui a accueilli de nombreux commentaires sur X à l’époque. On comprend donc pourquoi Kioon a tenu à le sortir chez nous malgré qu’il n’y ait que 5 tomes pour le moment.
On y retrouve tous les ingrédients pour faire le succès de ce genre d’histoire : à savoir une histoire entraînante, de l’humour, un bestiaire varié et des personnages qu’on a envie d’encourager, le tout sous un trait joliment shonen. Si on est amateur du genre, l‘entrée en matière est efficace, rapide, dynamique et immersive. On ne perd pas de temps à découvrir le monde dans lequel vit Kuro, le chef du clan des exorcistes de la famille Kurogane, que son garant rêve de marier afin de lui donner une vie meilleure plutôt que de juste combattre sans cesse des démons. Cela démarre sur les chapeaux de roue et le rythme ne diminue jamais ensuite. On enchaîne quête d’une fiancée, malédiction et aventures face à des démons tout en cherchant un antidote, avec la menace de la Brigade spéciale de la guilde des exorcistes. Impossible de s’ennuyer.
Mais pour une lectrice un peu experte comme moi, qui a déjà lu nombre de mangas et d’oeuvres fantastiques, tout cela ne semble pas bien original, c’est même plus vu et revu, avec un habillage ma foi assez lisse une fois qu’on le déshabille. Le duo formé par Kuro et son originale de fiancée, qui se vent comme dépeceuse de première catégorie pour être une compagne fiable, fait rire mais m’en touche une sans faire bouger l’autre par rapport à Inuyasha et Kagome qui avaient un autre charisme. Ici c’est joli, pêchu, dans l’air du temps, mais cela manque de profondeur et d’aspérité. Le background reposant sur leurs malheurs familiaux ne prend pas racine à ce jour. On s’ennuie un peu si on cherche autre chose. J’ai surtout peiné à adhérer au concept de cette jeune femme se pliant ainsi en quatre pour son sauveur qu’elle ne connaît ni d’Adam ni d’Eve au point de vouloir se sacrifier pour lui en échange. Cela va trop loin. De son côté, il ne connaît que le combat face aux démons, malgré son grand coeur, c’est un peu pauvre comme développement… Bref tout ça manque de quelque chose.
Quant au décor, s’il reprend plutôt pas mal les aspects du Japon traditionnel qu’on connaît avec cette société sous forme de clan, ces croyances dans des créatures et démons d’un autre monde, ces exorcistes et autres épéiste, il m’a surtout semblé facile et plus fait pour plaire à un public lambda qu’incarné par l’autrice qui aurait eu une vraie intention avec. Elle prend quelque chose de générique, qui marche et le met à sa sauce. Cela s’arrête là. Alors ça reste joli, car elle a le coup de crayon rond qu’on attend de ce type de shonen. Elle sait aussi bien mettre en scène les moments d’action et faire poser ses héros ou leur donner le look et la pose qui tue, le tout au milieu de créatures bien dégoulinantes comme les Japonais aiment. Je comprends donc que cela puisse plaire et je ne doute pas que ça ait du succès en France, le volume de la poitrine d’un personnage aidant, ainsi que les oreilles et la queue d’une autre… Mais pour ma part, ça me passe un peu au-dessus. C’est trop générique.
J’aime les histoires fantastiques, j’aime les titres d’action et d’aventure dans des décors passés revisités, mais j’en ai déjà lu un certain nombre et je cherche le petit truc en plus désormais. Ce n’est pas ici que je vais l’avoir. Certes l’autrice maîtrise ses classiques et offre un démarrage très efficace qui cerne bien son sujet, son duo de héros en couple, son décor rempli de démons et d’exorcistes avec des combats pêchus à la clé, mais l’ensemble est trop générique et lambda à mon goût. J’ai besoin de plus, j’ai besoin d’une âme comme dans Inuyasha, l’un des maîtres en la matière. Ce n’est malheureusement pas pour moi, même si je pense que le titre trouvera facilement son public.

Dès les premiers instants, l’histoire m’a happée grâce à son mélange d’action, de romance surnaturelle et d’une ambiance à la fois sombre et captivante.
Kuro est un protagoniste qui marque immédiatement. Chef du clan d’exorcistes Kyougane, il vit entièrement tourné vers sa vengeance, obsédé par l’idée d’anéantir les démons responsables de la mort de ses parents. Pourtant, derrière cette détermination presque froide, on découvre un personnage profondément humain, pris entre son devoir, ses convictions et un destin bien plus complexe qu’il ne l’imaginait. Son mariage avec Fuyu, qu’il accepte davantage par obligation que par désir, va complètement bouleverser son existence.
Et Fuyu… quelle héroïne ! Elle est clairement badass du début à la fin. Déjà forte et charismatique avant même les événements du mariage, elle devient encore plus fascinante une fois possédée par le démon. Cette dualité entre sa propre personnalité et la présence du renard à neuf queues en elle apporte une tension constante, mais aussi une vraie richesse au personnage. Elle ne se laisse jamais réduire à une simple “fiancée en danger”, bien au contraire : elle impose sa présence et équilibre parfaitement le duo avec Kuro.
Ce que j’ai particulièrement aimé, c’est la dynamique entre eux deux. Leur relation évolue dans un contexte totalement imprévisible, entre révélations choquantes, combat contre les démons et engagement forcé qui se transforme peu à peu en lien sincère. On est loin d’une romance classique : ici, tout est imprévisible.
L’univers est également très intéressant, reprenant les codes des histoires d’exorcistes et de mythologie japonaise tout en les détournant habilement. Le secret autour du renard à neuf queues et du pacte des clans apporte une vraie profondeur à l’intrigue et donne envie d’en apprendre beaucoup plus sur ce monde.
Et que dire des dessins ? Ils sont tout simplement incroyables à tous les niveaux. Les scènes de combat sont dynamiques, puissantes et extrêmement lisibles, avec un vrai sens du rythme et de la mise en scène. Les designs des démons sont marquants, et même les moments plus calmes bénéficient d’un soin particulier qui renforce l’immersion.
En bref, un premier tome extrêmement prometteur, qui mêle action, mystère et romance avec une grande efficacité. Une lecture prenante, portée par un duo principal explosif et une héroïne qui sort clairement du lot. Une magnifique découverte qui donne immédiatement envie de lire la suite.

Alright, I'm in. It's got a cute fox, horrifying demons, and a surprisingly sincere exorcist. A little cliche, but I don't mind that as much as I thought I would. I'm still laughing over the netherpenthes. Who in their right mind could come up with an embryo pitcher plant demon that lays in wait at the bottom of a lake to catch humans as prey?
Now for the real question. Do I ship it? This is a romance series after all. I have to decide this. They're both so unhinged. They paired up a girl who wants to sacrifice herself to a god with a guy who likes cutting apart demons from inside them. I kind of have to ship them, because they're just so equally unhinged that no one would date either of them except each other. Am I fully on board yet? Not yet. But I could be. It depends where this goes.
This series is my exact kind of wacky, and here I thought it was going to be one of those cliche long title series. It's gory and gross. It's about exorcists. It's got two equally insane idiots in love, one of whom is an adorably cute fox. That's kind of everything I like all wrapped up in one misshapen box. It sure is a weird combination lol.

While I typically have a very difficult time getting into shounen romances, I genuinely enjoyed this volume! While there was one female character design I couldn’t get into—I hate the gauze-bra-shirt design—I was able to forgive it.
This series follows the young exorcist, Kuro, who is determined to exterminate every last demon, and the women who suddenly becomes his bride one day. As Kuro spends every waking moment hunting down demons, he has been unable to find a bride. While he doesn’t care at all about finding a wife, his servant acts as though the world would end should he not find someone to marry.
At first I found this setup to bit a tad boring, thinking from here they will find someone inexplicably in love with him, and he will go on being uninterested in his new wife while she admires him despite a lack of affection. While my assumption ended up being half-right, I actually enjoyed the reasoning behind why his new wife loved him so much—he saved her life when they were younger!
This backstory explains exactly why she was so ready to marry him despite the secretly dark implications that marrying him comes with, and I was happy with how the story was playing out. I wasn’t expecting Kuro to come around to developing feelings for her so quickly, but it’s clear he genuinely cares for his bride!
Fuyu, the bride, is an interesting character. Although she’s been through a tragedy, she’s mentally strong and is able to put up with some of Kuro’s stranger personality traits. Kuro, despite claiming to have no interest in getting married, quickly comes around to having Fuyu has his bride. Despite this being an action shounen series, I found their dynamic to be very cute!
Like, when Fuyu seemingly left Kuro, trying to cure herself without any help, the poor boy clearly thought she had abandoned him. This lead to him having to find and eventually save her, and them having a talk about how “trusting someone means not being afraid of causing trouble for them”. For someone who claimed to have no interest in getting married, he sure makes for a good husband~.
The only thing I’m slightly worried about going forward is the character of Mikuriya, the scorned girl who wanted to marry Kuro despite never having met him. He’s happily married now, and verbally accosting his new wife won’t win her any points with him. She feels a little too childish of a character to be thinking about marriage, so here’s hoping she disappears from the story soon.

I really liked the first half of this book. It felt like a shonen take on books like My Happy Marriage. The focus is on the new marriage between the exorcist and the bride with the tragic backstory, from his perspective. It breathed a little life into a subgenre I find emotionally overwrought. And then the characters go on the road, and every shonen trope in the world lands on top of them practically all at once. It changes the tone from proto romance to standard adventure very quickly, and I didn't love that.

Kuro is a known exorcist striving to rid the land of demons that killed his parents. Marriage was off the table until he met Fuyu. Unfortunately, the marriage ceremony concealed a dark secret which led to Fuyu being possessed by a fox demon. Now Kuro needs to keep his wife safe while hunting to a cure for this curse. It does not help that the Exorcism Agency's Pursuit Squadron led by a former candidate for being his wife is chasing him. Can they survive and find a cure? Read and find out!

You know, this isn’t a great story—BUT, it is oddly charming. Sometimes, at least.
There are some weird, clearly fetish-y things and there’s some unnecessary fan service for sure—that I just can’t condone. (Why can’t these mangakas help themselves?) But, the central relationship between Fuyu and Kuro is quite sweet. I appreciate that Kuro isn’t a weirdo, pervert freak like so many young, male characters in his position are often made to be. So far, he seems to genuinely care about Fuyu.

C'était sympa, avec de l'action, un peu d'humour et une part culturelle, mais rien qui ne se démarque vraiment de ce qui existe déjà pour ma part.
Ça peut totalement fonctionner si on débute dans le genre ou si on ne consomme pas que ça.
J'ai eu un peu de mal avec la logique du personnage qui se sacrifie un peu trop facilement pour une personne inconnue et les personnalités sont plutôt plates... À voir si ce dernier point évolue avec les prochains tomes.

May 15, 2026I like the character design for the most part but the story is just kind of okay. I feel like a lot happens in this first volume and some of it feels super traumatic and we just keep moving instead of feeling it or allowing it to grow the relationship between our couple. 4/6 stars
If my library gets the next volume I will check it out but I am not sure I would seek it out.

I like the art and the basic idea behind this, but the execution was aggressively mediocre. pacing was off and none of the characters felt nearly fleshed out enough, with lots of them making stereotypical decisions.

Fuyu and Kuro. Both such strong characters with great backstories. The fact that Fuyu is saved by him and then decides she wants to repay the debt is, well, okay, but what comes of it is so cute. They both rise to the occasion and grow together—that was so lovely to read. I’m actually curious now whether Fuyu will just be a silent companion or if she has a special ability too—I’d kind of hope so, so the two of them stay on equal footing, because at the beginning they seemed like equals. I thought the ending was awesome, and I’m so excited to see how it continues and how the two of them will develop. The art style definitely has something to it, and I love the character designs—the Boss Lady alone was so cool.
