Rate this book
Miss Maria Lucas, after jilting her fiancé, has traveled to Pemberley for the Christmas season. She hopes her visit to childhood friends Kitty and Lizzy will ease the discomfort she’s felt at home after disappointing her parents’ plans for her marriage. But she could not marry the man they chose—there is only one man she can give her heart to, a man she believes she will never see again.

Mr. Denny arrives at Pemberley, not a very welcome guest to Mr. Darcy. But, as a friend of Darcy’s new brother-in-law, Sir Camden, Darcy opens his home to Denny. Soon, Denny finds himself opening to new feelings for the lovely Miss Maria Lucas, and he acts to make this Christmastide one of new beginnings. As Denny shows the party at Pemberley his true nature, Maria hides some of her truths from Denny. Forgiveness and happiness dance within reach—can they claim their partners by Twelfth Night?

Misunderstood is a light, sweet Christmastide tale, the fourth in the Amazon Regency bestselling Love at Pemberley series, Pride and Prejudice novellas.

“It is better to understand little than to misunderstand a lot.” Anatole France

‘Misunderstood’ is book 4 in the 4-book bundle ‘Love at Pemberley’. I have reviewed each book separately under the individual titles.

Book 1: Most Truly: was 4-stars: I already had this book as part of my collection.
Book 2: Miss Darcy Decides: 4-stars: my review was posted separately.
Book 3: Miss Bennet Blooms: 4-stars: my review has been posted separately.
Book 4: Misunderstood: 3-stars

This can be read as a stand-a-lone. It is clean and a quick read.

I would say the main characters fall below that of secondary characters and into that area of tertiary characters. At the end of book 3, a letter arrived informing Kitty that her friend, Miss Maria Lucas, had ended or broken her engagement.

I will admit that I am not a big fan of Maria Lucas. She was a very minor character and was very young in canon. Her older sister Charlotte Collins was not happy that she had broken with her fiancé. She saw it as an advantageous match for Maria and her family. Maria was constantly getting upsetting letters from Charlotte that she ignored.

The flow of this story just seemed off in comparison to the others in the series. Of course, Charlotte was consistent with her character, but she wanted to blame Lizzy for being a bad influence on her impressionable sister. She wanted to ignore the fact that Maria had accepted a proposal to appease her parents. Maria finally realized that she couldn’t marry one man when she was in love with another. She then broke the engagement.

“Telling the truth to people who misunderstand you is generally promoting a falsehood, isn’t it?” Anthony Hope

Darcy and Lizzy feature in the story as Maria was staying them as the guest of Kitty. A lot seems to happen at Pemberley. Many engagements and marriages have happened on those beautiful grounds. Maria is hopeful that the magic will happen again for her when the object of her affection arrived at Pemberley. He was no friend to Darcy and had a long road to travel in order for forgiveness to occur. Maria was under Darcy’s protection and he took his duty seriously. This was a difficult transition from distrust to trust. However, it was worth the read.

Source: Meredith [Austenesque Reviews] hosted Reina M. Williams’ blog tour and I won a copy of ‘Love at Pemberley’ [Four Novellas of Pride and Prejudice] in her generous give-a-way with no expectation of a review. This is my honest review/opinion... I could not do otherwise.

Book 4! I think this is the end of this series. WAH!!!!!!

The story follows Maria Lucas who has just broken off her engagement because she couldn't get herself to marry a man she didn't fully love. Her heart has been stuck with one fellow who barely even knew she existed. That man is Mr. Denny. He was once friends with Wickham and Darcy does not trust the man. However, Sir Camden is also Denny's friend so Darcy reluctantly opens up his home to this man to give him a chance to prove he is not like Wickham. It is Christmas time is it not? With the Christmas season underway, Denny starts realizing that Maria may be the one he was looking for to give him the love he needs. Will Maria's wish come true?

This was super cute. Maria is a silly girl and I don't know why she tried to keep her previous engagement a secret. Just communicate girl! Tell him the whys! Sighs.

But I liked Denny and I'm glad he realized Maria was the one for him. They need each other. They are perfect.

I am sad this is the end of the series....for now. Who knows? Maybe we'll get more? Look at me being forever hopeful. I just don't want this to end. The author is really good at making this feel like an Austen and bringing these characters to life especially the side characters who deserve some spotlight and redemption.

The narrator was awesome...as per normal. She is great especially with both the men and women.

Overall, a great end to a good series. I think this was one of my favorites even though I wanted to shake some sense into Maria! I'll stamp this with 5 stars.

Who but Jane Austen aficionados remembers Maria Lucas? Or even knows who she is/was? The practically invisible and awestruck younger sister to the overly practical Charlotte has grown up here in Reina M. Williams’ fourth Love at Pemberley novella. So much so that she has even had a London season and has jilted an admirer who asked for her hand. And, like Jane Austen herself, she accepted and then broke the engagement almost immediately. Perhaps that is the most shocking and exciting thing that Maria Lucas has ever done, to the disappointment and disapproval of her social climbing family.

Still, it’s a shame and embarrassment that Maria carries with her on a Christmas visit to Pemberley, where she is enjoying some time with her old friends, Kitty, now married to Colonel Fitzwilliam, and Lizzy Bennet, mistress of Pemberley. Both Kitty and Elizabeth are in the throes of marital bliss, something that Maria hopes for as well. She pines for a man who unknowingly stole her heart a few years earlier: Captain Denny, once a friend to the notorious George Wickham, who eloped with Lizzy’s gauche and precocious younger sister, Lydia.

Most people of the time really would have misunderstood Maria Lucas for breaking her engagement to a nobleman, but she stood firm in her convictions and...
