I just finished reading this first book by Simon Rothleder. It is not my usual genre; however, I DID enjoy the book very much. It was well written, wide-ranging, and weird (in a good way). I became very invested in some of the characters (some not so much). With the number of characters in the book there are plenty of them to like some, dislike some, and actively root for an untimely accident for some. I loved the unhinged footnotes… all 180 of them… especially #69 (I have sons). I laughed out loud multiple times while reading both the book and the footnotes. Loved that one of the characters that shows up at the end of the book was a former professor at my Midwest alma mater that many people have never heard of. Loved the Office references and other references to pop culture. I’m sure there was much more symbolism and metaphor than what I picked up on. I did appreciate the closure on most of the story and character arcs as I am a big fan of tying up loose ends in books and movies. As a professional editor, some of the grammar and punctuation choices drove me crazy, but I went in with an open mind due to the author’s note about deliberate choices having been made. Anyway, well done, Simon! There’s something for everyone in here… romance, intrigue, politics, corruption, mafia, tech bros, sexual deviants, apes, baseball, prophets, drug-fueled diatribes, even an entire footnote written in Indonesian. Give it a read; I think you will enjoy it!
