Game Changer

Rate this book
Maci strives for one thing in life—anonymity. With her writing career in full bloom, all she wants is to work in peace while concealing her true identity from the public. Though readers love the science fiction worlds she creates, Maci knows that gender stereotypes could damage her career if she is exposed as a woman.

Liam is the envy of all gamers as the lead developer for nZone Studios. Over time, he builds walls around himself, keeping people at arm’s length who only gravitate to him for his material possessions rather than who he is as a person.

With thick barriers around their hearts and their past looming in the shadows, Liam and Maci challenge each other by slowly peeling away their protective layers and seeing each other for who they really are. It doesn’t take long after their chance meeting at a coffee shop for them to become one another’s game changer.

If a strong, quirky heroine makes you roll your eyes, If you hate sexy heroes who would rather lose a game than the woman of their dreams, if fast-moving relationships and hot sex aren’t your thing, if you can’t stand when humor is used to cover up life’s awkward moments, if cliffhangers anger you beyond comprehension… this series is not your cup of tea. This contemporary romance novel is the first book in the Playing Games series and contains adult situations meant for ages 18+.

Rene Folsom, author of contemporary and paranormal, lives in Florida with her husband and three kids. She has officially diagnosed herself with creative ADD and often has a million and one writing projects going at once. In addition to writing, she is also a graphic artist who enjoys creating custom book covers for indie authors. She is definitely an artist at heart and would love nothing more than to be elbow deep in clay during her waking hours.

Rene believes that all fiction is based on some form of reality—otherwise we would never have the inspiration or knowledge to dream up the realistic situations we portray with our words. She is proud to say that her personal experiences have been inspirational, though perhaps not always identical to that of her fictional characters. Where reality and fantasy diverge, however, must remain her little secret…

it wasn’t bad, but i’ve yet to find a book this year that wows me as much as the Forever Evermore and The Dragonian series did a couple weeks ago.

“He brought one of his hands up and grasped my fingers, gently placing them on his chest, over his heart, so I could feel the rumbling staccato beneath my touch.
“I’ve walked on many planets and floated through the heavens... yet you’re the only one in the universe who can make my hearts move.” His voice, just a mere whisper, radiated through my soul as he spoke the all-too familiar words I wrote so long ago.
The man just quoted my first book.”

Rene has done it again! This book is an amazing read. I couldn't put it down. This book has a little bit of everything in it, mystery, surprising twists, and it wouldn't be a book by Rene without some steamy scenes!

Maci is an author, but writes under a pen name because she writes sci-fi books. She is a best selling author though, and very few know that it's her writing the books. She likes remaining a secret.

Liam is an owner of a top video game company. He is a "cocky geek". Girls that he date, always have a motive to be with him. It's usually either his money, to become a video game tester, or because of his standing in the gaming community.

A chance meeting at Maci's writing cave, AKA, a local coffee shop proves to be a game changer for both of them.

Maci has her secrets and so does Liam. A few secrets do come out.

I loved when Liam quoted a part of one of her books to her, not knowing she's actually the author.

"I've walked on many planets and floated through the heavens...yet you're the only one in the universe who can make my hearts move."

I love how Liam is a cocky gamer geek, and not an over the top alpha. I loved all the geeky references, like Harry Potter and the golden snitches. And their tee shirts were freaking hilarious!

It ends with an awesome twist and I can't wait to read the next in this series!!

Game Changer is a refreshing new change of pace. Liam is superstar in the gaming world. He’s leery of woman as they always want to use him. When he runs into Maci, he is attracted to her but hides who he is. Maci has her own life that she is trying to keep private. Liam and Maci get to know each other better. And get this! They apparently meet almost 2 years ago and didn’t know it. Now Liam and Maci are trying to decide if the other remembers them or not and how to go forward in their budding relationship.

I was touched in the scenes with Maci and her grandmother. I really enjoyed the game talk as well as the book world. I thought that the book did a great job of displaying the gamer world and adding responsibility and maturity to the characters. The ending of Game Changer, left me floored! All I have to say about it is that Rene Folsom’s “got game”! I’m eager to read the next book.

I would have finished this quicker as I was instantly hooked, it was refreshing as I've been feeling like I've been in a slump or burnt out, but then my in-laws came over and there was no time for reading haha. I couldn't wait to get back and see if they finally, finally realize that they each have found the person they've been looking for and were going to tell each other.

Oh my gosh, I was squealing when Liam finally realized but then Mrs. Folsom had me sitting on the edge of my seat for the rest of the read. I was screaming in my head, "Would you guys just talk" or "Tell him"/ "Tell her already!" however I understand why Maci didn't tell Liam she realized this is the man she hasn't been able to stop thinking about since their one night stand on New Years Eve. She realized the moment he kissed her but then she realized he didn't recognize her, so she feels like that night didn't mean anything to him and she wasn't as memorable for him like he was for her. What do you expect Maci, he's a guy and they're oblivious haha. But when he finally, finally realized she was the women he couldn't stop thinking about I was so happy!

Maci, I think a lot of authors could relate to her as she's an author herself so many hours in a coffee shop haha. Though sometimes she seems antisocial (I mean, who doesn't once in a while) she's very confident and up for anything, especially if it's gaming. But she's also someone that likes to push the boundaries and step out of stereotyping, starting with her career of being a female sci-fi author. However no one knows she's M.L Thomas, I'm excited for whenever Liam finds out!

Liam is charming and fun but honestly if you're running a business then you need to put your personal life aside and work. Don't bring the drama there or when you're on cloud nine don't act like you don't want to be there. And you shouldn't shut out your friends either. I get he was smitten over Maci but seriously this is your job and life, you shouldn't throw it away now just because you found someone you want to spend everyday with, you still need to make a living. He sometimes bugged me because of this, especially when he got mad at his friend Thad/work partner because Thad wanted/needed him to work on their gaming company. I get when you find the one and want to do nothing but spend time with them but you can't just drop everything else you got going in your life, especially your job- you can't just drop that.

Overall I enjoyed this, I was instantly hooked, couldn't put it down! The story flowed and I liked Maci's sassy self. I also really enjoyed the characters nerdy shirts, who doesn't love a funny graphic tee. This was a light read with some drama. Had me sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting for them to finally tell each other they remember so when they did it was absolutely sweet! I was grinning super hard and on cloud nine by the end of this! I'm hoping Mrs. Folsom will continue their story as it's so cute! So if she does, I can't wait to read what happens to them next and hoping we get some answers about this scumbag of an uncle Maci has.

*Got a free copy from the author in exchange for my honest review, this in no way affected my opinion on it*

First let me say this..I love Rene Folsom and her books. Game Changer was no exception.

Maci is an author who writes under a pen name and doesn't want anyone to know her true identity and Liam is the owner of the biggest gaming company there is and rich. I love her independent streak but wanted to shake her sometimes and Liam is the hot geeky nerd not at all sure of himself around women but knows he wants to get to know Maci better. Neither one realizes that they had met before but when they do.....look out!!
They meet and there is an instant connection. They send each other and themselves through so many changes. There is a little bit of everything in this book and I couldn't put it down. Both Maci and Liam are keeping secrets. Will these secrets tear the relationship apart before it has really begun? What are their secrets? Will the fiery independent woman and nerdy geek be able to overcome their differences? What harm will Big Jim the competitor cause? All questions to be answered when you read this book!

I highly recommend this book and author!!

Game Changer by Author Rene Folsom is the first in her new contemporary gamer romance series, Playing Games. In it, she tells the story of Maci and Liam, two nerds looking for their other half.

Maci has lived as a covert famous science fiction author for quite some time, and fears sharing her secret lest she be treated with prejudice for being a woman in a predominantly male genre. Liam is the lead developer of nZone Games, a video game company, who wishes for someone to love him for who he is on the inside, not for what’s inside his bank account. When these two nerds meet sparks fly and they discover a chemistry they’ve both only felt once before: when they first met at a New Years Eve party long ago. Only they wore masks and never revealed their names back then, so now neither realize who they’re falling in love with until it’s too late.

It’s a rocky romance indeed, but Maci and Liam make it work. Happiness is just around the corner, if only they’d stop stumbling over their own feet to take it.

I’ve said time and time again that I love Rene Folsom and her works, but now I can honestly say I’m IN love with her and her works thanks to this book! A romance about gamers? Exactly what I needed!

The writing is, as always with this authoress, flawless and exhilarating. Although there is sex in this book, the story does not deviate to allow it. It fits in tastefully and flows well with linear progress of the two main characters’ relationship. These aren’t horny people getting their rocks off, these are two genuine people falling in love with one another. I could feel their emotions through the amazing writing talent of Miss Folsom, which is a rare thing for me when it comes to romance novels. She’s done the impossible over and over again: make me enjoy erotica/contemporary romance! And I don’t doubt she’ll continue to do it for a very long time!

I cannot wait for the next book in what’s sure to be an amazing series!

So I got my hands on an ARC of this book from the author for an honest review... the book is now currently free and I definitely recommend the book!
I love a good hot contemporary romance and Game Changer is one of those that super hot and has the sweet points of the contemporary romance.
Maci is a sci fi writer who manages to keeps what she does private. She is afraid that people may not like her work if they discover her a woman. She also keeps everyone else at distance to some issues in her past.
Liam is a game developer that has worked hard to get his company to where it is at. For all his hard work, he is the envy of several people. He also keeps many at a distance to some issues in his past.
Liam and Maci meet a coffee shop. Sparks instantly fly for Liam, but Maci is not having it. She does agree to be his date for a charity ball. From there they both start feeling more for each other.
I loved the hot sex scenes in this book. Very well written and just very very hot. Because of the adult situations in this book, this book is recommended for 18+

Game Changer is the first book in the Playing Game series. I was drawn to the book because of the main characters' career--being an aspiring writer and a gamer at heart--and wondered how the both of them will come into each other's path. I really enjoyed reading Game Changer and devoured it in one sitting. I thought the way both of them met was quite interesting, with Maci being annoyed with Liam for his attitude and how she slowly warmed up to him. Liam was quite the charming guy--persistent and adorable too--and it was difficult not to like him.

Things got a little complicated with all their secrets being thrown into the picture and more things and issues surfaced. Then... there's this major cliffhanger at the back. Nevertheless, Game Changer is still a great book, with great dialogues and good writing style which I really enjoyed. Thank goodness book 2 is out, so I can continue their story and find out what happens to them next.

Disclosure: I received an ecopy from author in exchange for honest review.

Game Changer
The Game Changer #1 in the Playing Game series has a great understanding of the gaming world as well as old fashion romance. Maci is a strong female lead who knows what she wants. And being gender neutral is important to her. Don't presume because she's a girl it mean she chooses to be the female characters to defeat you with. She uses the badass killers because she plans on winning. I was at the edge of my seat trying to get to the part when they realise their past. The Prequel, The Wager was set almost two years before, will they recognise each other's eyes, now the mask is off? Something I enjoyed about reading this book was feeling connected to the heroine is a SciFi author and Liam is a geeky gamer but of course like all Folsom's leading men is a sexy arrogant ass, who I'm currently calling my book-boyfriend.

Maci.....Liam.....games....and Sci Fi writing.

What more is there to say? This was a fantastic book and I found myself savoring every little drop I could get out of it because I didn't want it to end. After getting hooked in The Wager (book 0.5), I have craved to know more about Liam and Maci's world. This book really hit the spot but left me hanging wondering what is to happen next....

As we know,

Maci is an author who doesn't share her secret with anyone.

Liam is the cofounder of a huge gaming company

The two had an encounter New Years Eve at a party.

Now the two are crossing each other's path yet again.

Do they remember each other? Do they allow the other to stay in their life? What happens with Maci's secret?

Pick up a copy of Game Changer to find out more!!

This for me was highly anticipated, and Rene didn't disappoint! As if she ever could...This woman I swear cannot put a foot wrong, she writes amazing books that cannot be put down and Game Changer is no different! I was hooked from page 1 to the very end and I cannot wait to see where this series is going to end up.

Maci and Liam are great characters, Maci is fiery and independent, trying to success in a male dominated role and kicking ass at it, as well as have a few secrets she keeps close to her. Liam is the perfect match for Maci, even though things aren't plain sailing for them.

I cannot recommend this book, and well this author enough! Try them out, I guarantee you wont me disappointed.

WOW! WOW!! WOW!!!

I am not going to say too much about this book, but I will say this.
After reading the prequel(The Wager), I knew I had to read Game Changer.
I immediately bought it and had to have more!!

Rene Folsom gives us surprise after surprise and some wicked hotness that never stops! Once you start one of Rene's books you are thrown in to a world of PURE SATISFACTION and EVERLASTING IMPRESSIONS!

All you need to know is you can't get enough of Liam and Maci's story. The heat is unstoppable and the passion undeniable.
Will these two find their happy ending?

This series is one for the books and has left this fan in need of her next fix.

So glad I read this book! It's a great story about Maci, a talented sci-fi writer who wants to remain anonymous in a man's world. After all, there aren't many female sci-fi writers. Then she meets Liam, a cocky gamer geek. I don't want to give the story line away but it is such a good story that I really got lost with the characters. Rene Folsom really has an easy writing style that gets you wrapped up in the characters' lives that you feel like you're in the story. I seriously cannot wait until the next book comes out!!!

IT'S A CLIFFHANGER, and not a good one. I didn't check the reviews, so I didn't pick-up that this was a cliffhanger. If I had, I would never have bought the book and wasted five or six hours reading it. The characters were one dimensional and the plot was formulaic, but there was enoough there to keep me going until the last page when we're left hanging. I struggled to finish the book, and despite the cliffhanger, I don't care enough about the characters to read the books that follow. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, and I won't be buying this author again.

I am really liking this series and thought this was a great beginning to their love story. I really like their apprehensions to trust each other and give in to a relationship, it makes for great sexual tension. The story line about her Grams is very well written and quite an accurate portrayal of someone with Alzheimer's/Dementia.

There were a few things I found a little off with them both being concerned with the other not remembering their fling that took place in The Wager. That's what kept me from giving this a 5 star.

Overall, it is very well written, funny and sexy!!

What a great story, loved it. I loved her sassy mouth and how he liked that she wasn't like other women. She really likes her cocky geek. They have great chemistry and a few of their conversations were quite funny. This book did end quite abruptly and that only makes me want to read the next one even more. I need to know what happens and it's going to drive me crazy until I read and find out. Loved how this started with a book inside a book.

Loved this book! This is the first book in a new series by Rene Folsom and it sounds like the start to another amazing series. Maci is an author who writes under a pen name wants her identity to only be known by a select few. Liam is a "cocky geek" and doesn't want a girl that uses him for his job. They are such a great duo and the ending makes you want more! Sexy, funny, and thrilling!

I loved this book. Let me repeat that, I LOVED THIS BOOK! I need the rest of the series ASAP. You may be wondering why it's a 4 instead of a 5? Very abrupt cliffhanger, outside of that, I was beyond happy with this book. I loved the nerdy gamer references. (Probably because I can relate to them.)

Only read this for a follow up to the prequel which I enjoyed. But this was a bit frustrating to read.

Some parts were problematic and there were a lot of eye-roll inducing phrases:

“It’s just nice to hear a woman order real food. Usually chicks order shit suitable for a rabbit, so the fact you just ordered a half-pound burger makes me second guess all my assumptions about females.”

“Well, you better learn really quickly that I’m not like other women,” she said with a fierceness that told me she meant business.”

Really? “I’m not like other girls”? For how much the character is supposedly all for fighting against gender stereotypes they sure do spout anti feminist rhetoric to reinforce how special they are. This could have been a broader conversation to change the ML ideas on gender stereotyping instead of reinforcing them.

I understand that characters need to have conflict but there was some behavior I couldn’t get behind, particularly stalking and lack of respect of boundaries:

[after stalking FL to both find out her name and then blatantly disregarding her when she tells him she’s unavailable to meet with him]

“I need you to respect my boundaries.”
“How’s this for boundaries.” [immediately grabs and kisses her]

And then she just forgives him! “Oh that situation must have been so awkward for him” “I’m keeping secrets too” This at the very least should have had bigger consequences than it did. Instead the biggest consequence from their lack of communication is they don’t talk to each other for a week because FL is upset ML doesn’t recognize her from a kiss (after an anonymous one night stand from over a year ago)!

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

What a refreshing change of pace. I love that the hero is a gamer. A rich one, who owns part of the best gaming company in town, but still he is a gamer at heart. He isn't your alpha he-man, (I love those too), but a sexy geek, who is lucky enough to run into Maci at a local coffee shop. Even though neither remembers that they have more than met before, they are attracted to each other, even if he comes across as a bit cocky. Smart guy that he is, Liam asks Maci out.

Both have secrets they aren't willing to share, so of course problems will occur. But then that's what makes things interesting. That and the gamer shirts with fun sayings or pictures on them, the game references. Then there are some really sweet moments...

This story tugged at my heartstrings, while making me laugh, melt, and cry just a tad. I loved it and already have purchased the next book in the series. Did I mention the big, fat, whopper of a teaser/cliffhanger the author leaves at the end? Gotta to find out what happens next!

It advertises as the FMC being a strong kick ass female. I found her not strong, nor kick ass..she came across as normal with confidence insecurities and fear. She is also extremely untrusting, which is a turn-off for me when the MMC tells her his secrets.
I also knew what the cliffhanger would be about halfway through the book. I don't mind cliffhangers if they are well thought out, but this one.. was bland and uninspired and left me with no interest in continuing the series.
I enjoyed the banter, quick wit, and the current days slang peppered throughout.
The story itself was decent. The MMC begins to grow as a character while you can see the FMCs direction and wanting to change and making small attempts but the character is still to stubborn to fully grow.
The spicey scenes were good. I'd give 🌶🌶 for the spice. And I like that the author gives some hints in the book about the prequel novella so the reader isn't confused while reading.

Refreshing read.

I absolutely loved this book and I'm so happy I read it. This book grabbed me from the first sentence and had me hooked all the way to the end. I love how the storyline flows so well and the characters I absolutely love. This does end in a cliffhanger but it's an amazing ending. I was laughing and shocked, as well as other emotions, that I did not want to put this book down. Great job by this new to me author and now one of my favorites. Onto book two now.
