Barbara Samuel is a multiple RITA award-winning author with more than 38 books to her credit in a variety of genres. She has written historical and contemporary romances, a number of fantasy novellas with the likes of Susan Wiggs, Jo Beverley and Mary Jo Putney. She now writes women’s fiction about families, dogs, and food as Barbara O’Neal.
Her work has captured a plethora of awards, including six RITAs; the Colorado Center for the Book Award (twice); Favorite Book of the Year from Romance Writers of America, and the Library Journal’s list of Best Genre Fiction of the year, among many others. You can find a full list of all titles here.
Now living back in her hometown of Colorado Springs, Barbara writes in a study overlooking Pikes Peak, a pin that draws her home from her travels. She shares her home with Christopher Robin, a British endurance athlete, a gorgeous and lovable chow mix named Jack; a very, very old Siamese named Esmerelda; a rescued street cat who has become the fattest silver tabby on the planet, and the wonder twins, two tuxedo kittens from a local shelter, whose names have changed several times. Yes, a lot of animals.
An avid photographer, cook, and traveler, Barbara keeps a log of travels, recipes, and photos at her blog, A Writer Afoot, where she also sometimes posts writing advice. You can follow her on Twitter and Facebook, but she doesn’t promise to be particularly interesting there.
Since this is a book to help guide for writing, I have not created a blog post on it. However, this was a great read and it gave a lot of helpful information for writing romance books.
I think there could have been a bit of more depth into it and dove deeper or gave some more in depth information rather than an overall view of each section. I will say that it was great that the author covered aspects of editing and publishing and what to do after your book has been published!
I got this from the library, but will definitely buy it. All the workshop items are helpful for writing any book, not just romance.... this is the book I wish I had before I started writing! It will be my first writing companion from now on.
I picked this up at the library and thought it might be a fun refresher. The information is a little rudimentary and I think better tailored to new writers or writers new to romance, but I did find the chapter on plotting to be pretty useful.
A little simplistic, this book is written for the complete novice. Some of the basic material concerning writing is worth review for an experienced writer, but the book (as one might expect) deals mostly with formula romance writing, as the title would indicate.
An excellent reference for anyone aspiring to write romance! As a writer wanting to get serious about writing romance, I found this book extremely helpful. Written by a successful romance author, the book includes information about getting started including examples from her own journey. There are many tips for improving your story, increasing productivity, and getting your work published. This book covers it all and I will be referring to it many times in the future!
A great book that goes over writing a romance novel with broad brush strokes. It touches on everything from development, to the writing, different genres, and finally publishing. It's a fantastic book for those who are looking to write , but it has good tips for those whove been writing and are looking to sharpen their skills.
Found this at the library and thought ‘why not?’ but it should have been more of a 'wow'. I mean, I read for a little while and then went and got a pen and paper and took NOTES. Lots of notes. 5 stars
