The Golden Age of Hollywood offered entertainment and escape to a country in a Great Depression and later in the midst of global war. These classic films continued to fascinate and amuse audiences for the next decade and beyond, offering them glimpses from everything between colorful musical romps to exotic international locales and everything in between. Present day viewers of classic or "old" movies enjoy and remember the giant titles of days gone by. Gone with the Wind, My Fair Lady and The Quiet Man get regular viewings and a lot of fan attention. But lesser known titles deserve recognition as well. These unsung classics served the same purpose and in many cases launched the careers of those who brought them to life.Represented are many genres from comedy, musical and heavy drama, with examples of work by great directors from Jean Renoir and Mitchell Leisen to Cecil B. DeMille and so many in between. These movies, once very big at the box office, have been forgotten by many, not seen often enough by others. Give the films a try. Give the book a try and learn the behind the scenes tidbits along with Alistair's fun and interesting take on the films themselves.
After reading this trio of books I have a huge list of films to hunt out and enjoy. Exactly what a movie fan would want in this. COvid-19 lockdown times. Read the book then watch the films!
Rupert Alistair loves movies and it shows in all the books he has written. This book covers lesser known but very good movies. I've seen a number of them, and they are very good. I can't wait to see the others someday.
Wow, there are a bunch of wonderful classics that I have yet to see! This is a great book collection with interesting synopsis of many lesser known movies and packed with lots of fun background facts. I lined up a bunch of movies to watch after reading these books, great fun and highly recommended!
